OXFORD TO CARTERTON RAIL LINK PETITION

The Oxford-Witney-Carterton A40 corridor is already congested and thousands of new houses are being built or planned, with even more cars on the roads. We the people of West Oxfordshire and Oxford request to: a) plan a viable and sustainable rail route from Oxford to Carterton alongside the A40 corridor protecting the proposed route from further development and b) cost the route in question and work with central government and the rail authorities towards the creation of this vital transport link.

GETTING TO KNOW... YASAR, DAISY and ISMAIL The Bampton Cof f ee House is another Bampton institution and is one of our go to venues for snacks, meals and great coffees. Like many other local businesses they were hard hit by the lockdown but the whole village was delighted to see them open again, and we wish them well.

BCH's owners Yasar and Daisy Yiletmis, and their business partner Ismail, told us a little more about themselves...

After graduating from catering school in Turkey, Yasar (a very young 53 - Ed.) came to England in 1988 and started work at the Plough in Clifton Hampden. He met Daisy, who was also at The Plough, in 1998 and they married in 2000 with their reception at - you guessed it - The Plough! Yasar ran a Turkish Restaurant in Witney and when they sold that recently he rejoined Daisy and his business partner and close friend Ismail in running the Bampton shop. They live in Abingdon and their children Tomas, 24 and Melissa 17, sometimes help out in the family business!

Yasar says "From the first day we opened in 2007, we had the support of Bampton people and from surrounding areas. We are very proud to be part of Bampton and want to thank everyone who has supported us over the last 13 years. Without their custom and support we would not be here and thanks to them, we are still here after Covid-19 - which is nice for everyone."

It's definitely nice for all of us in Bampton, and let's show them our support in the best way possible ....! Thank you Yasar, Daisy (who's away in Turkey) and Ismail!

Jenny Chaundy tells us: "This artwork was created by members of the Bampton Bush Club. Everyone designed a flower and all the designs were combined to make this wonderful artwork. With help from TCG Design and Westbrook Framers the artwork was made weatherproof and mounted on the wall for all to see. A very proud moment for all the artists! It was installed overnight as a surprise, hence the signature 'BCB 2019' - Bush Club Banksies!!"

The Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) has a network of dry-stone walls that measures at least the equivalent of the Great Wall of China.

Th e Scot t ish Wildcat (Felis silvestris) is one of our most elusive carnivores and the only native member of the cat family still found in the wild in Britain. It is a European protected species and it is estimated that there are less than 300 individuals in total in the wild.

Scottish Wildcats prefer to live on the woodland edge, in the margins of mountains and moorlands, with rough grazing. They generally avoid high mountain areas, exposed coasts and intensively farmed lowlands. Like most cat species, wildcats are solitary except when breeding. They can be active by day and night, and their diet varies across the country. Rabbits are the favoured prey of wildcats, as well as voles and mice.

PEREGRINE FALCONS are large, dark-coloured and powerful birds of prey with long, broad ! pointed wings and a fairly short tail. In f ligh t b er m o t h ey can r each speeds of over 200m ph when th B diving onto their prey, which is typically pigeons ea l t S B-2 although other small and medium-sized birds e' s r u t are also taken. In the 1960s their population Na crashed in the UK due to the use of pesticides which got into the food chain and also human persecution. Now, however, with improved protection there are an estimated 1500 pairs in Britain. Traditionally Peregrines are birds of rocky coasts where they take advantage of suitable ledges for nesting. In recent decades they have also moved into urban areas, and several town and city centres have at least one pair nesting on a prominent building (they have a particular liking for cathedrals). In Oxfordshire, there was a pair that used to nest on the former Didcot Power Station.

Inner Edge is a local Bampton band made up of Luke Akroyd (Bass Guitar), Toby Bardsley (Rhythm Guitar and Vocals), Jacob Dennis (lead guitar and vocals) and Fletcher Sharp (Drums). They are studying for A Levels at Burford School.

In 2018 Inner Edge won the Oxford County Music Service?s Oxfordshire Spotlight Talent competition and in 2019 were runners up in the Buckinghamshire Battle of the Bands.

Their last gig was in March to a full house at Fat Lil?s in W itney. Sadly, their future festivals and local events have all been cancelled due to Covid 19. But make no mistake, as soon as they can start up again there will be plenty of opportunities to see them.

Lockdow n w it h : Pip Sh u ck bu r gh After a long and distinguished career as an illustrator, Pip started to paint in oils in the mid 1990's. She was commissioned to paint stately homes like Blenheim Palace and Stonor Park and later to create a series of paintings of buildings used in the filming of Downton Abbey.

This has made her paintings famous world-wide and they have been reproduced thousands of times on everything from mugs to jigsaws.

Pip in h er What did I miss most? Where to start? You?ll have to increase the Ch eapside st u dio pages in Lockdown Lowdown ... Here goes! Hugs, especially Children and Grandchildren, Cinema, Impromptu drinks and chats with friends, but most importantly the wonderful band of painters I teach every Friday in Bampton. I hope they are painting away without me but I miss every one of them. What fun and laughs we had and hopefully will have again soon.

The first thing I'll do after lockdown? Join the queue for the hairdresser hoping to get a cut for Christmas.

Start the classes again, and have the grandchildren to stay. (Note to daughter, just for a few days, not weeks.)

What do I wish I had done before lockdown? I wish I had bought lots of new underwear and what I believe is called ?loungewear?in order to enjoy getting up in the morning and slipping (or rather squeezing these days) into something brand-new. An Ebike would have been good during lockdown but I suspect I would be too scared to use it when it?s all over and the traffic is back.

M essage f r om t h e Bam pt on Br an ch of t h e Royal Br it ish Legion ~ Cen t en ar y of t h e Bam pt on War M em or ial ~ This year we celebrate the centenary of our war memorial. It was erected and unveiled on 20 Sept 1920, to mark the end of the war and provide a reminder of the local losses of the Great War. Due to the restrictions imposed by Covid-19, we will almost definitely be unable to have any form of formal ceremony to mark this occasion.

We are working toward marking this event in a small but poignant way. We are exploring a number not to exceed 30 to gather for a small dedication ceremony and take some photos for the archive and to mark the occasion. Please keep an eye on the various social media outlets for more updates as we move nearer the date.

On 29 June 1720, natural philosopher Rever en d Edw ar d St on e, discover er of Aspir in , matriculated at Wadham College, Oxford aged 18. Walking one day through a meadow near Chipping Norton, while suffering from "agues" (fever and shivering), Stone nibbled at a small piece of bark from a White Willow tree and was struck by its extremely bitter taste.

Suspecting that it might have therapeutic properties, he gathered and dried a pound of willow bark and created a powder which he gave to about fifty people, who found it highly effective. He had discovered salicylic acid, the active ingredient in Aspirin.

Practicing these quick steps can help our ability to correct our balance.

Stand with your r igh t side next to a firm, high-backed chair or stable work surface. Rest your hand on it for support if you need it.

Step the outer (left) leg forwards, taking your weight onto the stepping foot, then return to the centre.

Then step to the left side and return to centre;

and finally do a step backwards.

You?ll have done three steps transferring weight each time ? as opposed to just pointing.

Turn around to repeat with the other leg - this time with your left side next to your stable surface.

Repeat 5 times on each side. Start slowly, but gradually think about making the steps quicker.

Safety: Dizziness, sickness or excessive tiredness are signs to stop exercising and wait for symptoms to settle. Warning signs to stop exercising and seek urgent medical attention include sudden onset of rapid palpitations, reduction in exercise capacity, dizziness, severe breathlessness or chest pain.
