WHAT’S HOT * SYNERGY: when all the parts combined are greater than the sum of the individuals. Something about this type of collaboration is putting it at the top of the list of leadership trends, proving that working together is the sexiest of leadership traits. * WRITING S.M.A.R.T. GOALS: the latest statistics say that both men and women find it attractive when the opposite sex makes S.M.A.R.T. goals for everyday things they want to accomplish in their life, making it unquestionably one of the hottest leadership trends today. * SELF AWARENESS: recognizing and understanding moods, emotions, and drives, as well as their effect on others, has been and always will be on the ‘WHAT’S HOT’ list. Recognizing emotions shows character which is an attractive quality to have. * BEING A TRANSFORMATIONAL LEADER: setting clear goals, constantly encouraging, and setting high and clear goals for their followers is the latest trend.

For an example of ‘WHAT’S HOT’, take a look at the “Toy Story” characters.

Although in the beginning they started off rough, the team came together in the end and displayed all the characteristics on the hot list.

WHAT’S NOT * FUNDAMENTAL ATTRIBUTION ERROR: attributing other people’s success to their environment and our own success to our character describes fundamental attribution error. This is also failing to put yourself in other’s shoes, which is so last semester. * DISBELIEF IN SERVANT LEADERSHIP: although often criticized, servant leadership should not be overlooked. By not creating a comfortable work environment and allowing followers to share power, you are preforming negatively for your team. * EXISTENCE OF CONFLICT CLUSTERS: although displayed by many, conflict clusters are always appearing on the ‘WHAT’S NOT’ list. All seven conflict clusters display poor teamwork, which is how it consistently earns it’s place on the not-hot list. * LACK OF EMPATHY: nobody likes an insensitive jerk, making lack of empathy a huge no-no. Being able to understand the emotions of others and how to react towards them is a huge deal, so the lack of this will only result negatively on you.

The “Means Girls” cast is this month’s example of ‘WHAT’S NOT’ hot in today’s leadership trends.

This crew displays fundamental attribution error, numerous conflict clusters, and lack of empathy. Take some notes and DON’T be a mean girl.

Dear Abby, I am afraid that I am lacking in social skills. Whenever I try talking to other people I get very awkward and don’t have the attitude I wish I had with others.

How can I obtain a higher set of social skills? -Ray Ray, Obtaining social skills can be difficult for some people, don’t worry. Many people think that social skills are just a matter of friendliness, this is not the case. In order to have social skills you need to have acquaintances around to practice on. You need to be able to relate to these people you surround yourself with in order to achieve social skills with them. You need to have an upbeat attitude so that the people around you will find you pleasant to be around. No one wants to be around a negative person. You need to have a solid grasp on your own emotions so that you can learn how to influence and be influenced by others around you.

Dear Abby, I want to become a transformational leader. I feel as if this would help me to become more of the person I want to be in life. What ways can I change myself in order to become more of a transformation leader? -Pelswick Pelswick, In order to be a transformational leader you need to set high expectations for yourself as well as other people. You also always need to encourage others, this way they will always know you are supporting them. You need to push people to see their full potential in order to push them in the right direction. Always follow the three steps which are, create an inspiring vision, motivate people to buy into and deliver the vision, and manage the delivery of the vision. Once you achieve these and remember to always support the people you are trying to help, then you will be the transformational leader you want to be. - Abby

Dear Abby, As a leader I am lacking in motivation. I feel as though I have all the other components of a leader, but I can’t seem to put any of them to use without the motivation to do so. How can I boost my motivation when it comes to leadership? -McLoving

McLoving, One huge component of motivation is that you need to have the desire to achieve for the sake of achievement. Good leaders don’t need to have an incentive to do something; they do it because they are passionate about it. A huge component of motivation is passion. You need to have passion if you want to be a motivational leader. You must also be optimistic about what you are doing in life. This will cause you to be motivated to achieve your goal. If you are negative about what you are doing you will not have any motivation to do it.

In the hit movies ‘The Hunger Games’ we see main character Katniss Everdeen perform excellent leadership abilities. She shows loads of passion, motivation, and empathy, thus making her the winner of this ‘Who Led It Better?’ battle.

Although highly intelligent, the Joker lacks EQ completely. We see this when he is unable to work with anyone else besides himself and when he doesn’t consider others when he acts.

Demonstrating amazing emotional intelligence, it’s to no surprise that Abraham Lincoln wins this ‘Who Led It Better’ battle. He shows social skills, motivation,

Almost the complete opposite of a good leader, Hitler lacks empathy for everyone, has virtually no self-awareness and self-regulation, and doesn’t work as a team unite, but instead runs his community as solo taking nothing from no one.

Disney ‘Little Mermaid’ Ursela

Disney’s Ursela lost this month’s ‘Who Led It Better?’ battle due to her constant creation of conflict clusters and lack of self regulation.

Disney ‘Frozen’ Elsa

Winning the competition, Elsa from the Disney movie ‘Frozen’ displayed the role of a leader perfectly. She led her thought about how her actions would effect others and based her actions around that.

STAFF Alex Mazzeo 21, JUNIOR, MAJOR: RECREATION AND EVENT MANAGEMENT Alex is an avid scrapbooker.

She also has a love for all things Disney related. She has previously been apart of the Disney program for a semester of her college years.

FUN FACT: When she’s not obsessing over cat videos, Alex dabbles in crafting and lip syncing to Whitney Houston in her bedroom mirror.

Shannon Sugamele 18, FRESHMAN, MAJOR: BROADCASTING and/or EDUCATION In her free time, Shannon likes to go camping, play all types of sports, and hang with friends. She is a lover of ice cream and animals. She is currently debating between either being a sportscaster or high school teacher for her future career.

Grant Meade 20, SOPHOMORE, MAJOR: POLITICAL SCIENCE When not writing for Leadership Monthly, Grant spends his time playing lacrosse, doing things outside, and wearing bow ties. He is an all around food lover and amateur chef.

Scott Bays 19, FRESHMAN , MAJOR: COMMUNICATIONS Scott loves watching movies and is a total film nerd. He has been acting in plays since the 4th grade.

Scott has now been in over 20 different shows including ‘Hairspray’ and ‘Cats’. He would love to be an actor, but is pursuing a job at Dow Chemical.
