West Toowoomba a success story by Joy Wright Please take the time to read this next story.
With a can do attitude you can achieve anything 11 members to 50 members in two years West Toowoomba Croquet Club has a proud history spanning almost 100 years. The West Toowoomba Croquet Club was founded in 1925 beginning on a lawn at the local bowling club facing Rome Street. When the bowlers required these grounds for their own use in 1941, the ladies moved to Newtown Park where the City Council gave land to enable the club to continue. With a lot of hard work, the then President, Mrs Flegler and her loyal band of ladies levelled the ground, and on their hands and knees planted grass on two lawns. With membership fluctuating over the years, the club hit an all-time low during Covid when registered member numbers were 11. A renovation project on the clubhouse and incentives for new members has seen these numbers now grow to 50 with a wide range of ages

VALE FRANK CREASEY
VALE JIM SAUNDERS Jim Saunders passed away shortly before 2:30 pm, today, 8th July 2022, after a debilitating illness. I first met Jim when, as a member of Essendon CC, he competed in the ACA Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles (partnered by Frank Whiskery) and Singles at Deniliquin Croquet Club in November 2007, and I was refereeing my first ACA event at the invitation of Owen Edwards. I continued to meet him each year at that venue and around other courts in the following years, as he moved from Essendon to Drysdale and finally to Belmont. He was passionate about his Golf Croquet and he and Val would hook up

Barry: I find a backswing as short as possible & an almost over exaggerated follow through gives me the best accuracy. That was certainly the case on the challenging lawns we have just played on. It was still a bit of a lottery but I found that if I tried for extra power by increasing my backswing, my accuracy suffered. Greg: I did notice a lot of Gateball players were not stalking the ball or using a lot of follow through. One way to address this is to teach/ refresh the routine for stroking. The Routine: Players should develop a consistent routine in preparation for every stroke.
•
Keep your eye on the ball
•
Keep the body still
•
Backswing is controlled
A stroking routine could be:
•
Hit the ball in the centre
•
Take your grip
•
The swing is fluid
•
Stalk the ball
•
Follow through
•
Take your stance/position
•
See the grass under the ball.
