Message from the ACA Board Chair

Enough Huey, Enough!

2022 has been a record year for rainfall. It would seem every competition this year has been affected in some way by torrential rain. Well done to tournament managers and volunteers for arranging different venues, super soppers, doses of patience and good humour to enable events to continue.

Flooding continues in NSW, and with recent storms has now affected Victoria and Tasmania. A number of clubs have been inundated three times this year. If you or your club wish to support these flood affected clubs details are on the ACA website https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1H8g t7AdrJcJShwBwQcJ47IFsKCmAS9sb_2z5zlF6GwE/ edit?usp=mail_response_notification

Despite the wet conditions National competitions have been well supported with the largest ever field for the National Men’s and Women’s Golf Croquet Championships in Adelaide.

Following the Interstate Shield in Adelaide, National Referees, Under 21 Co-ordinators, and State Coaching Co-ordinators had the opportunity to meet in person for the first time since 2019.

A two-day National Coaching Conference focused on the development of a National Youth Training Program and ongoing improvement of our current coaching program.

Coaching is the life blood for our sport. As a coach there is nothing more satisfying than seeing players improve over time and hearing of their successes. If you or your club have not had the opportunity to

receive coaching in the past 2 years, I urge you to contact your State Coaching Co-ordinator.

The ACA board has continued to function despite Director vacancies. The board continues to seek Expressions of Interest from individuals, especially with experience from other sporting organisations. The board is currently advertising for a CEO. If you know of suitable candidates who want to contribute to our sport as either director or CEO have them contact the ACA Secretary secretary@ croquet-australia.com.au

In November Australia will host the Mac Robertson Shield Association Croquet Team event at the Victorian Croquet Centre, Cairnlea. The “Mac Rob”, last hosted in Australia in 2006, is the pinnacle event for Association Croquet.

As the current holders of the trophy we wish our team all the best over the 15 day event, and hope the Mac Robertson Shield will be retained at its home here in Australia. If you are unable to attend the Mac Rob, the entire event will be live streamed via mysportlive Australia, through the wonderful efforts of Gareth Denyer and his team of volunteers, who deliver the best quality video and commentary in the world. Links to the live streaming will be available at on the Victorian Croquet website under resources.

CROQUET IN THE SUNDAY MAIL

Great to see some publicity in the Sunday Mail leading up to the Golf Croquet Nationals

Well Done to everyone responsible.

NEIL BENNETT WHITE (23/4/43 – 20/7/22)

The Brighton Croquet Club is mourning the loss of our club member and player Neil Bennett White.

Neil passed away on the 20th of July aged 79 years. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife Heather, also a croquet player, and his family. Neil started playing Association croquet at South Terrace. He also was a member at Holdfast Bay for a time before joining Brighton.

Neil embraced Golf Croquet in the early years of its establishment as a competitive national sport. He was selected as a team member for the inaugural GC State team competition in 2007 and represented SA again in 2012 and 2013. He was a qualified referee and coach for many years and he was extremely supportive of new players to croquet. Neil was president of SACA from 2009 to 2011 and was instrumental in convincing SACA to bid for the world AC championships in 2012.

When the ISS was held in Adelaide for the first time in 2014, Neil was the Tournament Manager and he was also President of the ACA council from 2013 to 2015. Neil was a member of the group established to promote U/21 participation at SACA and also supported the ACA push for the same.

He was also known for telling “Dad” jokes and his flamboyant dress sense, often wearing colourful jackets and ties.

HYDE PARK/ALFRED JAMES INVITATIONAL

This event was held at the Hyde Park Club on 8th–10th July 2022. It was a great opportunity to see some of the best players in the country show their skills. It was organised brilliantly by Heather Bajcarz and she did an incredible amount of handson work as well, in particular making sure the urn was on first thing and overseeing the catering. Given the nature of the event she needed lots of helpers on all fronts not just from Hyde Park. The standard of play was extremely high, although there were times when unexpected breakdowns occurred. There were many 20+ yard roquets hit and the hoop running (on some tight and firm hoops) was special to watch. Despite a couple of

MILLSWOOD CROQUET CLUB HOUSE NOW TAKING SHAPE

unfortunate withdrawals there were sufficient skills from the remaining players to amaze the spectators. (Special thanks to Jim Curtis & Greg Rowberry for filling in at the last moment.) At Hyde Park we are used to players hitting their balls across the tennis courts (and vice versa) or even down the street but were not used to boules from the Petanque pistes bouncing across the front lawn with a Petanquer in hot pursuit as happened during play on Saturday! Although the temperature was on the low side the weather was great – with the sun frequently peeping through the light clouds. The players enjoyed the hospitality of Hyde Park especially the Friday night dinner and lunches on all 3 days. At the end of competition, the results were: Winner of the 3rd group – Rosie Landrebe (Cammeray, NSW) Winner of the 2nd group – David Short (Norwood, SA) Overall runner up – Trevor Bassett (Cooks River, NSW) Overall winner – Peter Landrebe (Cammeray, NSW). A total of 69 games were played over the weekend, keeping the courts filled with players at all times.

There were several players with little or virtually no prior experience competing in this Code of Mallet Sport before this weekend. Experienced players were very supportive of these players, coaching and assisting with tactics, allowing them to learn and have a very enjoyable weekend. Egyptian format handicap scoring allowed the beginners to compete with the very experienced (and some world-class) players participating.

It was quite a sight to see 48 players in action at the same time in winter sunshine on the three (frosty) St Helens lawns. The St Helens hospitality was lavish and Patsy Paine did an excellent job herding 72 players into some semblance of order. When the awards were announced at the Parkside dinner on Saturday night, East Launceston’s Chris Hurford took out the major award with an amazing (and record breaking) 41 hoops scored in just two hours of croquet.

A SUCCESSFUL TASSIE SCHOOL PROGRAM

Latrobe Croquet Club in the north west of Tasmania is doing its bit for the future of croquet, developing a thriving partnership involving more than 50 students from the nearby Latrobe High School.

The concept came from an enterprising Latrobe High teacher, who decided to let their students try three unusual school sports; tennis, bowls and croquet.

After sampling all three, most of the students decided to continue with croquet, with 56 students opting to learn the game.

A number of experienced Latrobe players volunteered to mentor the students with girls coming in two groups of 15 on Tuesday afternoons and a group of 26 boys on Fridays.

Chris West from Latrobe Croquet Club said that the program had been very successful with the students loving the new sport.

“We were a little bit nervous about having so many energetic teenagers on the lawns, but we need not have worried,” he said.

“While they were always competitive, they were very well behaved, making a point to shake hands and thank the member volunteers after every session.”

“I have no doubt that some of them will continue in the sport and may be tomorrow’s under 21 champions.”

The school has since invested in a croquet set for the students and the program will continue next year.

The Tasmanian Open Doubles Competition was held in wet and windy winter conditions over the weekend with the Kingston duo of Sue Beattie and Phil Roach taking the title.

The need to adapt to change and provide products that will attract more people with already time poor lifestyles.

Bob can see many similarities between our organisations and it was invaluable to listen to his wealth of knowledge and experience.

Haylee Jesensek, Systems and Operations Coordinator, Bowls Australia, took us through the very successful journey of the Bowls Aust Rockie Rollers product and campaign.

Haylee was very excited to share their learnings and resources.

Keen to ensure we don’t make the same mistakes, Haylee also provided us with additional ideas and suggestions.

Her enthusiasm and passion was infectious and demonstrated what can be achieved when someone is driving it.

DAY 2

The National Coaching Coordinator (Greg Bury) provided an update on the current resources and how they can be used in the future.

All State Coaching Coordinators then gave an update on what has been happening in their state with ideas/learnings shared between the group.

Participants were then split into 3 groups and a workshop was conducted to discuss 2 topics:

• What is working?

• What needs improving?

Butchers paper was used and a spokesperson from each group gave a summary.

All actions to be completed were recorded on a whiteboard with an action plan completed at the end of the session.

Participants were asked to complete a survey of 20 questions before arriving in Adelaide. Some of the topics included:

• How to do the refresher training.

• Getting more coaches active.

• RPL and prerequisites.

• Updating the current manuals.

• Additional manuals and badges needed.

• The current processes for LMS.

• Coaching Conferences for every state.

• The referee requirement for all disciplines. Discussions were very productive and actions were included on the action plan.

I would like to thank everyone for their engagement and passion during the 2 days and appreciate the time we had together.

Special thanks to the ANCC Barb Piggott for her support, doing the minutes and her work behind the scenes.

CROQUET – A FAMILY AFFAIR –3 GENERATIONS

Many of you may have heard of or seen Jamie Gumbrell play recently at the Australian women’s open. However, Jamie was not the only member of her family playing in the event. Jamie was the youngest of three generations present. Annette Bisley and Ross Bisley, Jamie’s grandparents played in the plate events and Jamie’s mother, Karen Bisley played in the women’s competition

Annette and Ross play croquet at Waimarie \in NZ. Annette started 12 years ago and then Ross started playing about 10 years ago. The Gumbrell’s were introduced to Croquet in Christmas 2014. Subsequently Jamie was introduced to Kate McLoughlin and Peter Freer in Canberra and was soon playing better than her grandparents.

Jamie encouraged her younger brother Ethan to playing croquet when she did not have a partner for the Australian U 21 competition in 2019 in Adelaide. Jamie taught Ethan and the subsequently they won the U21 competition in Adelaide in 2019 and then in Geraldton 2020. Covid unfortunately stopped them playing together again in the last 2

years. Their brother Samuel made an appearance in Geraldton in 2020 but hasn’t continued.

Having attended 2 x U21 World Championships, two Open World Championships, two Interstate shield competitions and numerous other ACA and NSW competitions as a spectator supporting Jamie, Karen finally decided to play too.

Because of the Covid lockdowns Jamie, Karen, Ross and Annette hadn’t seen each other in person for over 2 years. The event was special, as not only were they playing together, but this was the first time they had been together since Covid.

Maurice was a university honours graduate in Physics and after moving to Tasmania in 1966 taught electronics in Hobart.

He started his croquet career in 1976 at the Glenorchy Croquet Club under the coaching guidance of Jack Reid.

Winning the Tasmanian and ACA Gold medal on many occasions, Maurice went on to win prestigious English Silver Medal in 1990.

Wife Barbara also learnt to play croquet and both enjoyed representing Tasmania for many years.

Always keen on coaching and introduced new players to the game, he had a need to pass on his acquired knowledge, skills, concepts and experience to others in return for the years of pleasure that he received from the game.

Club Profile

Moorabinda Croquet Club was formed in 1904 as a private club at the base of a hill in Bunbury, two hours south of Perth in Western Australia.

They adopted the Aboriginal word “moorabinda” meaning “foot of the hill” as the name of the new club.

40 years ago the local Council developed Hay Park, a multi-sport complex, and Moorabinda moved to its new permanent home.

Today it is one of the best croquet centres in the country, boasting six tournament quality lawns, all under lights, with an excellent clubhouse and spectator facilities.

In 1998, the Club was host to the World AC Championships, and next year will welcome international competitors for the World Over 50 GC Championships.

Life members John and Dale Jury joined Moorabinda 23 years ago, when the Club was struggling for members.

Today it has an active membership of 78, including the current GC Australian Open Champion, (and WA Champion) Gary Phipps.

John Jury says the healthy membership is largely due to word of mouth and personal contacts, but the Club uses a number of innovative recruitment methods, including TV advertising.

“Our President is a businessman who used a lot of TV advertising and he was able to negotiate a very good deal for the Club”.

“Together with social media, it is a great way to promote our “try croquet” days, he said (watch the commercial here)

John believes that being a part of a multi sport centre also helps recruiting, as many people using the complex move on to croquet from more active sports.

Moorabinda has a very active social program, with members getting together at least three times a week.

The clubhouse, kitchen and newly built patio are also in demand for outside functions, a significant source of income for the Club.

Play is predominantly golf croquet, but Moorabinda still has 16 active Association players and fields a team in the AC Pennant.

Definitely a Club with a proud 118 year history and an even brighter future.

Greatest Moments in Croquet

Being the Australian flag bearer at the 2015 World Championships in NZ was very special.

Playing in the 2016 World Teams Tier 2 event as Australian Captain for the first time was a dream debut as Captain. There was huge expectation

on the team to win the event and bring Australia back into the Tier 1 group. The team was amazing and their support helped me get through the tournament undefeated. I still remember the moment we won a critical game against Spain on the final day which put us into an unbeatable position.

Winning the Interstate shield for WA in 2017 would still be my greatest and fondest moment, it was truly a team win with everyone contributing and a sensational celebration!

And just a little more from Chris Croquet has been a big part of my life for 20+ years but outside of that;

• I have a restored 1977 Leyland Mini that I received as a 40th birthday present.

• I played Rugby League in school and still play touch rugby with some school friends 26 years later.

• I’ve been married for 10 years to Dee and have a 3 year old Staffy/Kelpie (Dingo!) called Piper.

• Food (wine!), Travel, Friends and Family are the most important things in life.

Thanks to Gary Phipps for gathering all this information!

LATERAL ELBOW PAIN IN CROQUET PLAYERS

(aka Tennis elbow or Extensor tendinopathy)

What is it?

Pain on the outside of your elbow, where the forearm muscles that usually cock the wrist attach to the bone. The pain is often felt below the elbow joint. The pain is often exacerbated by hitting or gripping actions. The tendon is degenerative from overuse rather than inflamed.

Who gets it?

Although called tennis elbow, players of other racket or mallet sports are at risk. You do not have to play sport to get it. People whose work or recreation requires repetitive movements are also at risk.

Why?

• It occurs more commonly in unfit forearm muscles. New players, players who have not played for a while, and players who suddenly increased the amount they play are at risk. This makes everyone at risk after our compulsory COVID restrictions!

• When playing croquet there is a significant impact as the mallet strikes the ball. If the player grips the mallet too tightly, there may be an increased risk.

• If the mallet shaft is too thin, the player may grip too tightly. The shape of the shaft is a matter of individual preference. However, a round mallet shaft may require the player to grip more strongly to maintain the position compared to an octagonal or oval shaft.

• The weight of the mallet head and the flexibility of the shaft also needs to be considered.

There are some good resources available. http://oxfordcroquet.com/equip/mallets/index. asp https://www.cammeray-croquet.org.au/pdfs/ BUYING_A_MALLET_-_webversion.pdf

A player’s technique may need to be checked to ensure they are hitting correctly.

How is it diagnosed?

It is diagnosed by a history and examination by a doctor or physiotherapist.

Investigations:

Investigations are rarely required.

Treatment:

• Rest alone is often not sufficient.

• Pain relief such as Panadol or ice.

• Anti-inflammatory medications may help the pain, but not the underlying problem, because it is not an inflammatory process.

• A graduated strengthening programme of the forearm muscles is the most important treatment. Exercises need to be performed for at least 3 months.

• Steroid injections may help short term, but longer term have been associated with a worse outcome.

• Tennis elbow straps are useful as they decrease the impact on the elbow when the mallet strikes the ball. The load is redistributed to under the strap rather than at the tendon insertion.

• Increase the grip size: This can be achieved by either using padded gloves or increasing the diameter of the handle using a hockey grip.

• Avoid gripping the mallet when you are not hitting the ball.

• Prevention: Avoid sudden overuse of your elbow. Build up your croquet playing and strengthen your elbow.
