My sincere congratulations to the Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong (ADAHK) on presenting ‘Cross All Borders: Hong Kong Festival Showcasing New Visual Artists with Disabilities 2022’.
Since its establishment with the vision of ‘Arts are for Everyone’, ADAHK has been committed to promoting equal opportunities and advocating an inclusive society through arts education, as well as providing professional arts development support for people with disabilities to nurture their artistic talent, and to enhance their excellence.
Hong Kong Arts Development Council (HKADC)’s mission is to promote and support professional development of different arts sectors. The HKADC has been supporting ADAHK through Year Grant since 2014. It is a pleasure to witness the development of ‘Cross All Borders’ over the years and more so the ‘Cross All Borders: Hong Kong Festival Showcasing New Visual Artists with Disabilities 2022’
this year. ‘Cross All Borders’ is held every year with focus alternating between visual arts and performing arts. Apart from identifying potential emerging artists, ‘Cross All Borders’ provides a professional platform for people of different abilities to communicate with the public through arts. Visual Arts form the theme of ‘Cross All Borders’ this year. In order to fully embrace ‘Art without Borders’, the artworks are not limited to styles, types and media, allowing artists of different ages and abilities to develop their artistic potential and show their unique and infinite possibilities.
I would like to express my heartfelt thanks to ADAHK for their dedication to bring an enjoyable and memorable arts experience to all participants and audiences in ‘Cross All Borders’ every year, and I wish the event this year a big success!
Dr Wong Ying-wai, Wilfred Chairman of Hong Kong Arts Development Council
2022 Be Me
Foreword
It has already been 12 years since the first ‘Cross All Borders’ was held. As one of Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong’s long-standing projects, ’Cross All Borders’ upholds the value ‘arts without borders’, and aims at discovering potential artists with disabilities as well as providing them with a platform to showcase their talents and artworks. We hope they enjoy a fruitful life through these opportunities. Throughout these years, ‘Cross All Borders’ not only has discovered and brought more than 4,000 artists with disabilities together, it has also witnessed their growth and success.
I would like to express my special thanks to Hong Kong Arts Development Council for supporting ‘Cross All Borders’ with their Year Grant (Extra Activities Grant) this year. It provides us with additional resources to put together this year’s ‘Cross All Borders’; more importantly, it enhances public understanding of disability arts through this event. This year, with the theme of ‘Be Me!’, we encourage artists
with disabilities to get in touch with their inner selves through visual arts. We hope that while you appreciate their strength, creativity and unique visions through their outstanding work, you could also understand their stories and themselves better as individual beings – through the arts, we create connections and we hope to bring people closer together. Arts are for Everyone, indeed.
On behalf of Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong, I would like to thank all artists, their companions, organizations, schools, adjudicators and mentors for your active participation and tremendous support all these years, ‘Cross All Borders’ not only allows artists with different styles and abilities to explore themselves in a carefree manner, but also explores their unlimited potential, contributing to the local arts scene as well as the community at large.

‘Cross All Borders’ (CAB) is one of the signature programmes of Arts with the Disabled Association Hong Kong. Since 2009, this thematic arts festival is held every year alternating between performing arts and visual arts. It aims to uncover the great talent of budding artists with disabilities, and create a professional platform to showcase their artworks. In the past decade, CAB has reached more than 4,500 fresh creative talents, and has provided resources and artistic support in order to facilitate them in excelling in arts.
CAB has successfully nurtured a group of brilliant artists, actively demonstrating and promoting the potential of their works to the arts field and the general public, and has additionally established a world-wide collaborative network. It has become a great annual event in the field of Arts with the Disabled. In 2012, CAB was awarded the Arts Promotion (Group / Organisation Category) Bronze Award by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council to recognise its achievement in advocating for an inclusive society through the arts.

Be Me !
This year, ‘Cross All Borders’ will be held in the form of visual arts competition, any types of artworks with any styles or mediums used will be accepted. We aim to provide rooms for artists of different age to bring their creativity into play. Even though artists might have experienced various challenges on their path of creation, we still believe that creation is endless. Through different arts media, artists breakthrough their limits and explore their potential using something they are familiar with, showing their uniqueness and unlimited possibilities, adding colours to the world of arts.

Message from Curator
Through the years, the artworks collected in ‘Cross All Borders (CAB)’ are not limited to any styles, types, or techniques, which shape the diversity among all the unique masterpieces. We hope the variety embodies and promotes the unlimited value of the arts, which not only makes the public more aware of the infinite potential of our artists, but also encourages them to make good use of their valuable creativity so as to depict their vision in their creations.
As the curator of CAB over the years, I am really impressed by the artworks created by all our artists with disabilities. All the creative art pieces with delicate depiction are illustrated by unique individuals, insightful minds, and hearts filled. These art pieces not only depict the artists’ pure inner worlds, but also reveal their unique and limitless potential. With our artists’ unique senses, their thoughts and feelings are shared selflessly with the public through their artworks, touching and influencing many people’s lives.
Art is always about connecting with each other’s heart and soul. There is no right or wrong, neither winning nor losing. I hope that every artist will continue to share their stories and visions with their keen senses through their work, passing on the passion towards arts and impressing every audience.

Evergreen Tree
Ficus microcarpa is a common tree in Hong Kong, to which it can live until a very old age and also has formidable roots. It can serve as a metaphor for the long historical legacy of culture. Its waxy green leaves are ideal shelter, providing place of rest for various species of birds. I very much like its unbending strength and its calm and serenity feeling, as gazing upon it gives me encouragement and brings peace to my days!
