CLOSING SOON! Application deadline for the Just Transition PB Fund set for 12:00 noon Monday 4th September The Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund is back for a second year with £1.5 million of funding available to support green community projects in the Northeast and Moray.

Grassroots community organisations can apply for up to £50,000 for capital funding for green projects that address climate change and improve sustainability as we work towards net-zero. Once the proposals are in, these projects will then be put to a public vote where voters will decide which projects they believe will offer the greatest contribution towards a carbonneutral region.

This capital funding is for the purchase of tangible assets, such as buildings, equipment, and land with some previous recipients of the fund purchasing amongst other things, electric vehicles, charging points, solar-powered mowers, insulation, reusable equipment, and a solar lighting power bank.

Tom Arthur MSP visits Grow Free Community Foundation

om Arthur MSP, Minister for Community Wealth and Public Finance, visited Grow Free Community

Foundation on Wednesday 9th August to see first hand the impact of grants awarded to projects from Year 1 of the Just Transition PB Fund.

With the £4445 awarded following the public vote in Aberdeenshire, Grow Free Community Foundation purchased fencing materials and garden tools to start up community food forests on their site near Castle Fraser. The aim of the project is to develop bio-diverse food forests in order to create a sustainable permaculture design, helping to build knowledge and skills to cultivate, preserve and share a year-round local food supply.

Through the process of creating the community gardens and food forests, a number of Grow Free’s members are learning skills that support sustainable local food production. A by-product has been the development of local volunteer work parties and skill sharing for other sites and projects.

Projects from Year 1: Enhancing mobility & contributing to a greener future with North East Sensory Services

After a successful public vote, North East Sensory Services received £33,565 to purchase an electric people carrier.

Through the purchase of the vehicle, NESS has reduced its running costs, carbon footprint and environmental impact all while making a huge difference to lives of people who use the service.

Applications for Year 3 of the Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund open Friday September 15th!

Over the past two years, the fund, distributed and championed by ACVO in Aberdeen, has injected over £1.2 million into 160 projects in the city, bringing positive transformations to countless lives within our communities.

Since its launch in 2021, the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund has distributed approximately £51 million of grants to 3,300 community organisations across Scotland. The funding's focus on adults, economically disadvantaged areas, those with chronic health conditions, disabilities, and LGBTI communities provides a beacon of support where it's needed most. This resolute step towards improved mental health echoes the Scottish Government's Policy Prospectus, underlining their dedication to tangible positive change by 2026.

In Aberdeen, the fund has supported some fantastic projects from local organisations such as Greyhope Bay, Street Soccer Scotland, The Breadmaker, shmu, Aberdeen Science Centre and much more – we look forward to receiving applications for more impactful and innovative projects when the fund opens in 2 weeks’ time!

Latest update from The Promise Scotland from Gette Cobban, Senior Development Officer - ACVO TSI

One Parent Families Scotland publishes report, ‘Povertyproofing for families in or on the edges of care’ commissioned

by The Promise Scotland The report is based on research by OPFS with Child Poverty Action Group. It explores what happens to family finances when a child enters the care system in Scotland and this how affects family reunification.

Something to consider in relation to the report – what happens to family finances when a child or children are no longer able to stay at home and are taken into care?

For many families already stretched financially to the limit have we considered what this means and how this impacts on the family going forward? The immediate child protection process takes precedence while of course child safety is paramount but when we think about the family as a whole we need to consider family finances as part of the complete picture.

The Promise Scotland asked One Parent Families Scotland (OPFS) to look at this and working with the Child Poverty Action Group and working alongside 10 families who were willing to share their experiences this report makes for important reading.

They asked: what happens to family finances when a child enters the ‘care system’?What is the impact of this change on families and how can the negative impacts be mitigated against?

The often almost immediate change to family finances adds increasing stress and financial pressure at an already very stressful time.

The report asks us to consider what impact this may have on plans to reunite families and helping them to stay together successfully going forward. There is also a very helpful section on page 14 of the report advising what changes occur and when. This could be helpful for you when working with families to ensure they don’t fall into difficult with benefits.

It is important to understand the instant change to financial circumstances for families when organisations are offering support.

Families themselves might not have realised the changes that would occur as their focus has been on the child protection process or they may be aware but be too embarrassed to raise this issue.

Also, we need to consider that we know a number of 16-17 year olds choose to return home and this can have a huge impact on the family finances if families don’t know what help or support is available.

This report is very readable and raises an important topic that we need to consider. Both The Promise and The Child Poverty Strategy are plans to improve outcomes for families by 2030 so it is important to consider both these areas together and consider what support is available for families and where systems may need to consider change.

The report finishes with a variety of recommendations for change and these have been grouped into 3 categories: 1. Actions that should be implemented immediately to mitigate some of the corrosive impact of policies and service delivery issues identified by parents.

2. Longer term structural interventions that require policy/legislative changes.

Updates to charity law in Scotland “The Charities and Administration (Scotland) Act 2023 passed into law earlier this summer bringing with it new measures to strengthen the role of OSCR, the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator.” writes Alasdair Ross, ACVO Policy and Consultations Officer

T

he aim of the new law is to enhance transparency and accountability among charities and their trustees in order to foster public confidence in Scotland's charity sector. While many of OSCR's current powers will remain unchanged, the 'charity test,' the role of charity trustees, and other aspects relating to the transparency of information will be strengthened. The intention is also to align Scottish charity law more closely with similar regulations in the rest of the UK. The Scottish Government and OSCR will agree a timeline for implementing the changes in the coming months.

Meantime, charities and trustees should make themselves aware of these impending changes and start to prepare themselves for some of the new information that will be required as part of OSCR’s annual return process. The phased introduction of

changes will allow OSCR to engage with charities and advisors to ensure a smooth implementation process.

The changes will be introduced gradually, affording charities time to prepare and OSCR to offer guidance and systems for a seamless transition.The ACVO team are also on hand to answer questions and point you in the right direction for support.

The main changes to the law include:

Increased Inquiry Powers: OSCR's authority will expand to include the investigation of former charities and trustees. Inquiry processes and information collection will be streamlined. The new power of ‘positive direction’ will allow OSCR to give instructions trustees in specific cases.

Trustee Information: OSCR will publish trustee names on the public Scottish Charity Register and maintain a separate internal database with trustee contact details. Trustees can request non-publication for safety reasons.

Disqualification: Automatic disqualification of charity trustees will broaden to cover offenses like bribery, terrorist group association, and sexual offenses. This will also apply to senior managers within charities. OSCR can appoint interim trustees when necessary.

Publishing Information: OSCR will share more data on its website and the Scottish Charity Register. This includes unredacted annual accounts

Charity Removal: OSCR can remove charities from the Scottish Charity Register if they don't submit accounts or communicate with OSCR.

Connection to Scotland: OSCR can reject charity status for those with minimal connections to Scotland.

Existing charities must maintain Scottish ties to remain on the Register, except for genuine crossborder charities.

We recommend that all charities sign up to the OSCR Newsletter to ensure you receive the most up to date information about changes to the regulations and to be notified when the changes are coming in to force. In the meantime, we encourage you to continue to keep your accounts up to date, to ensure you have accurate records of Trustees and to ensure the contact details held by OSCR for your organisation are correct. This will put you in the best possible position to manage the changes.

Essential information for all charity trustees and senior managers As a result of these changes to the

law, OSCR are proposing a number of changes to the annual return process adding new questions and requiring more information.

The new questions should not be difficult to answer for someone with knowledge of how their organisation operates. OSCR have issued detailed information on the proposed changes and are asking for feedback from the sector. You can access the document here.

ACVO’s strongly advises all charity trustees and senior managers to take the time to read and understand this information and to inform any staff or volunteers who are part of the annual return process.

A Stroke of Genius: Explore the links between science and art at Aberdeen Science Centre’s Art Lab Throughout the coming months, as the leaves start to be brushed with Autumnal colours, Aberdeen Science Centre is going to be exploring the links between science and art.

The themed activities and workshops will be running at the weekends and during the school holidays at the 5-star visitor attraction.

Aberdeen Science Centre will be delivering various activities and workshops which will consider how artists use science as inspiration for their work. This ranges from looking at sculptures which are based on scientific data, to photographs of indoor clouds.

Calli Buchanan, public programme coordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre explained: “Art and science are intrinsically linked. This is evident in famous works of art, such as the Mona Lisa, which makes use of the Golden Ratio, an algebraic property, in its design.

“At a simple level, the very materials used by many artists, including Leonardo Da Vinci, will have been created thanks to scientists. Whether it’s the paints used to create the artworks which hang in museums and galleries around the world, or techniques to capture digital images, science will have played a role in creating the necessary technology. But the link is much more than this.

“Creativity runs through both science and art, those involved in these fields

need to be creative, to look at things differently. Both also require attention to detail and good powers of observation. The main difference comes in the way they present their results to the world, but even here there are commonalities as many choose visual devices to show their work.

“Over the next couple of months, we are looking forward to showing how art and science collide, we are keen to show that there is so much more to science than people wearing white lab coats and looking serious.”

Visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre will have the opportunity to try different scientific techniques to create their own artwork.

Calli, added: “It is amazing to think that you can take materials which many people will have in their kitchen and use them to create artwork. During the Art Lab sessions we will be showing visitors how to use water, soap and paint to create bubble art.”

Local artists are also being invited to swap their studios for an Art Lab at Aberdeen Science Centre. They will be able to showcase their own work and participate in the workshops being offered throughout the period.

Calli added: “In another example of science and art colliding, we have also invited contemporary art students from NESCol to come into the centre. They

are being given the opportunity to display their work and gain science communication skills at the same time.”

Younger visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre will also be exploring how science and art are connected.

Calli said: “Our story sessions will also focus on art and science. We will be telling the story of Edwin Binney, an American inventor who created the first dustless white chalk. This innovation wasn’t enough for Edwin. He wanted to take it further and add colour to the world and give children a chance to make colourful pictures. His curiosity and inquisitive nature led to the invention of the Crayola crayon. His story is told through ‘The Crayon Man’.”

“We are also hoping to inspire our younger visitors to create their own artwork after hearing how mistakes can become masterpieces through Barney Saltzberg’s story, Beautiful Oops.

“We will have experiment tables set up so visitors can create their own artwork, from spinning tops to art robots. We are excited to see what a visit to Aberdeen Science Centre will inspire our visitors to create!”

Landmark 'Game with Mum and Dad' event launches at HMP Grampian

Environmental charity Keep Scotland Beautiful has Climate Emergency Training available to help Scotland's Third Sector respond effectively to the risks, responsibilities, and opportunities that the Climate Emergency presents.

The charity has supported staff and volunteers from hundreds of Third Sector organisations to become certified as Carbon Literate, since pioneering Accredited Climate Emergency Training in Scotland in 2016.

The training also presents organisations with a fantastic opportunity to set themselves on the route to be accredited as a Carbon Literate Organisation. And there’s a course designed specifically for Scotland’s communities.

On Saturday 29th July, Families Outside, Denis Law Legacy Trust and the Scottish Prison Service (SPS) launched ‘Game With Mum and Dad’ at HMP Grampian.

he event was part of a Children of Prisoners Europe (COPE) campaign where

children got to play a game of football with their dad, mum, or caregiver, behind prison walls.

The landmark day was held in collaboration with Denis Law Legacy Trust, who also run the Club10 and Streetsport programmes which offer free sport and creative activities to young people. Speaking on the event, Streetsport Outreach Development Officer, Kiana Coutts, said “Game with Mum and Dad is a hugely important initiative that we are proud to be a part of.”

“Every child deserves to feel loved and supported, regardless of their circumstances, and sport is a fantastic way to bring families together for a day of fun and play.”

“We are looking forward to building on the sessions we deliver weekly at HMP Grampian and taking part in the international campaign alongside our partners at Families Outside.”

An estimated 20-27,000 children are affected by parental imprisonment each year in Scotland – twice as many as those experiencing a parent’s divorce.

connections between children and parents, where appropriate. This can support the health and wellbeing of both children and

The event was informed by children who visit HMP Grampian, and supported by SPS staff. On the day, families had the opportunity to take part in different activities, including beat the goalie, races and a game of family football. The chance for children to play games and share experiences with their parent in prison is valuable, and regular contact – where appropriate - can be hugely beneficial towards supporting the health and wellbeing of all involved, and can help reduce reoffending, with a person being up to six times less likely to reoffend if regular contact is maintained.

However, recent research by Families Outside has shown that maintaining meaningful connections with a loved one in prison comes at a significant cost to children and families, both financially and emotionally. The very high cost of travel and transport, distance to the prison, subsistence, accommodation, childcare, and time off work all factor into a family’s ability to remain in contact.

Local social enterprise Solstice Nurseries nominated as a finalist in the Social Enterprise Awards Scotland 2023 Solstice Nurseries is delighted to announce that they have been selected as finalists in the Social Enterprise Scotland Awards 2023 in the Health and Social Care category.

B

ased in Banchory Devenick on the outskirts of Aberdeen, Solstice Nurseries provides employment skills and training for adults who are recovering from serious mental illness and who do not have a job, paid or voluntary. The work is in a wholesale plant nursery, producing high quality plants for garden designers, landscapers and community groups.

Through attending Solstice, participants learn horticultural skills and general work skills with the aim of improving health and wellbeing and to assist in moving forward towards employment or other workrelated activity.

One participant, Brian, says: “Coming to Solstice has really brought me forward in terms of confidence, stability, teamwork, communication, work skills and meeting new people.

Daily tasks mainly consist of potting, weeding and propagating plants which I find quite therapeutic.”

Solstice is a quiet, safe, calm and supportive environment, where participants who may have become very isolated, or have difficulty being around other people, or are affected by intrusive thoughts or impulsive behaviours, or who may feel that they do not fit in anywhere, can feel at home and begin to realise their value and skills.

Aberdeen author’s tribute to the victims of the Piper Alpha Disaster raises money for local charity

berdeen based playwright and author, Mike Gibb, announces the publication of his latest book, adapted from a play set against the background of the Piper Alpha disaster, with all proceeds going to support the work of Bianca Friends charity.

I Had Never Heard a City Cry Before is an expansion of the story originally penned for Mike’s 2008 play Lest We Forget, commissioned by Aberdeen Performing Arts to mark the 20th anniversary of the Piper Alpha Oilfield Disaster.

The play performed to sold-out audiences on the week which marked the reopening of the Lemon Tree Theatre in 2008, before transferring to the Dundee Rep Theatre.

The story is based around two fictional men, the shy and gentle Kenny from Peterhead and the jack-the-lad Steven from Aberdeen, and the impact of the world’s worst oilfield disaster on the Piper Alpha platform in the North Sea on 6 July 1988.

Following the success of his recent books, Forgotten Heroines of the North

East and Forgotten Heroes of the North East, Mike began looking for another subject with a local theme for a new work and decided to revisit Lest We Forget, expanding the storyline and number of characters. On the night before the dress rehearsal in 2008, Mike came up with the line ‘I had never heard a city cry before but in the days after Piper Alpha Aberdeen wept’ and decided to use this as the title of his new book.

Publication of this book, which is intended as a tribute to the 229 victims of Piper Alpha, the 167 that died and the 62 who survived, has been supported by The Doric Board and all proceeds will be donated to the Bianca Friends charity.

Empowering Communities in Kenya

North East volunteers build three homes in a week with Gathimba Edwards Foundation’s volunteer programme

dedicated group of North East volunteers has recently returned from Kenya where they embarked on a successful week-long mission that resulted in the construction of three homes for vulnerable families.

It is hoped the new homes will dramatically improve their standard of living and uplift

the course of 6 trips and has transformed the lives of countless individuals, many of whom live in squalid conditions.

GEF Co-Founder, Myles Edwards, said: “I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of the volunteers that were involved in the project this year. It was remarkable to have such a dedicated team from the North East as well as local volunteers, specifically Humphrey and Gibson, whom we built homes for on our previous 2017 trip. These families may have previously slept outside or on the floor, but the sky is now the limit.”

The organisation aims to provide as many Kenyan children as possible with the opportunity of a bright future whilst also supporting children with disabilities in the UK. They pride themselves on transparency, empowerment, compassion and introducing supporters to the very people their support is uplifting.

Almost all of the children they support in Kenya have either lost their parents or live with a single parent or guardian who receive no Government support and rely on casual farm work.

In the heart of Aberdeen, the spirit of community thrived as young leaders from Northfield and Torry orchestrated two unforgettable family fun days. Teaming up with the Denis Law Legacy Trust, known for their impactful Streetsport program in partnership with Robert Gordon University, these enthusiastic volunteers showcased their dedication to making a difference.

ACVO News 28 September 2023 The inaugural Northfield community day set the stage for an exciting summer, offering an array of attractions that resonated with children and families alike. From inflatable attractions and engaging Streetsport activities to captivating face painting, the event was a hit. But the rhythm of the event was truly set by the infectious beats provided by the Aberdeen DJ Academy. The Denis Law Legacy Trust ensured the day remained energetic by providing free refreshments and sweets, fuelling both the fun and the smiles.

Local young residents - Abigail, Evie, Erin, Aimee, Derryn, and Josh stood out as the architects behind the Northfield event's success. Their meticulous planning, creativity, and dedication exemplified their commitment to their community.

A week later, Torry embraced its second community day, which embraced the theme of "touch of pink." The event was adorned with an abundance of inflatables and Streetsport games, delighting participants of all ages. The standout feature of the day was the introduction of the new Streetsport Go Karts, which captured the hearts of everyone present. However, the day's success transcended mere entertainment, as the Torry volunteers rallied to support the Kacey Seivwright Fund. Their efforts, in memory of Kacey, raised over £1000, a remarkable achievement for a crucial cause.

Young volunteers, Kelsey, Lily, Marcus, Lewis, Chloe, Alaina, Antonia, and Logan orchestrated the Torry community day with unwavering commitment and creativity.

Their dedication to creating a remarkable event while underscored the power of community-driven initiatives.

Central to the Denis Law Legacy Trust's ethos, both community days remained completely free to access.

This decision embodied the Trust's mission of inclusivity, ensuring that everyone could partake in the festivities. Impressively, over 1000 individuals attended across both events, reinforcing the impact of these youth-led gatherings.

Aimee Culley, Streetsport Operations Coordinator, highlighted the significance of these events, emphasising that they grant young people a voice and influence within their communities. The coming together of Northfield and Torry to support these family fun days showcased the strength of unity and the unwavering support of the community.

Reflecting on the process, Chloe, a young volunteer who helped organise the Torry Community Fun Day said “we had to work with the local community to decide what they wanted to see at their community day. There was a lot of behind the scenes work but I think that’s really important as we could create something that really was for the community. It’s all pulled together and it's become a really good day.”

Kelsey, another young volunteer involved in the setting up of the the Torry event said “It's nerve wracking, you don't know who's going to turn up and how well it's going to go, but looking at it, it’s gone very well. I think it brings the whole community together. These community fun days serve as a testament to the immense potential and creativity that young individuals bring to the table. DO YOU HAVE A SPARE ROOM? Aberdeen Foyer’s Nightstop service supports young people at risk of homelessness across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.

Their dedicated network of volunteers – known as hosts – allow respite for a young person who presents as homeless by providing them with a spare room, hot evening meal and a listening ear.

We spoke with Megan Douglas, Co-ordinator for Nightstop North East Scotland, to find out more about the service and how those with a spare room can become a host for young people who need a safe place to stay for a few nights.

Can you explain the Nightstop service and your role as the Coordinator?

Nightstop is a national service run through a charity called Depaul UK. Aberdeen Foyer introduced the Nightstop model to the North East of Scotland last year which works to prevent young people from experiencing homelessness.

Currently, Nightstop North East Scotland is about keeping young people safe just for that short time, so they do not have to sleep somewhere that is dangerous, or somewhere unsafe, we want to make sure that the young people we support have a place to live and to thrive.

My job as the Co-ordinator is to support the hosts, giving them the confidence to volunteer and provide their spare room to a young person.

We do safety checks in terms of an interview, home assessment, references, enrolling in the Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) scheme, and then volunteer training. There is quite a lot that goes into getting the hosts ready to ensure that they are comfortable and confident during their hosting journey and to ensure it is safe for everyone involved.

We are looking to recruit hosts constantly throughout Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. We do this by going and speaking to groups, posting on social media and communicating the key message of: “Do you have a spare room?” That is where it starts – if the potential host has a spare room, then we can explore if they would be able to volunteer as part of Nightstop.

Can you tell us more about the hosts and what they have to provide in order to volunteer with Nightstop?

All that Nightstop hosts need to be able to offer is a spare room, a hot evening meal and a listening ear.

We’re not looking for people who are qualified social workers or experienced youth workers – hosts just need to be human and have a desire to help at that most basic level.

We then put all the support and training in and get them comfortable and confident to be able to volunteer.

We see many types of hosts throughout the Nightstop network: those who are retired; ‘empty nesters’; single households; those still with children at home. They are coming from all different backgrounds, which is amazing to see.

It's really inspiring to hear their motivations for wanting to volunteer: whether it's come from a personal aspect through their own childhood, or relationship with their own family,

or sometimes people just have the space and want to do some good.

For young people who present as homeless, in what ways are they involved with Nightstop and how are they referred?

In terms of the young people themselves, we support those within the age range of 16 to 25. What we are doing with Nightstop is preventing that spiralling situation that may come with the risk of becoming homeless. We don’t want the young person’s life falling apart just because of their current living situation.

We take referrals from the Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Councils.

Their Housing Officers refer a young person to us at Nightstop and, as long as we can get all the boxes ticked, we house that young person with a host as soon as possible. For example, if a referral comes through first thing in the morning, we could have that young person in a host's home by the same evening.

If there is a young person who has had a difficult time with their parents at home, and that relationship is at

BECOME A HOST AT NIGHTSTOP. breaking point, having that young person come and stay at a Nightstop host’s home for a short time can offer some much needed respite. From there, we can support the young person and their family by offering mediation and look into getting them back home, if that is the right thing for them.

The length of stays really vary depending on the duration, it depends on host availability and what is right for that young person. In terms of respite, it could be for a week or two, it could just be for a weekend. It depends on what's needed for that young person and their family.

How do you ensure and maintain the quality of service through volunteer hosts?

A lot of investment goes into our volunteer hosts, because without hosts we don't have a service.

We hugely appreciate that they are doing an amazing thing by opening up their home to young people.

We invest in our volunteers to make sure they can host to their best potential, which both benefits the volunteer and the young person they are hosting. We are constantly offering training, as well as

providing volunteer meetups which allows hosts to get together, have a chat and build that like-minded community.

Hosts go through their training together, which I think is really important. They are all able to learn together and from each other, and from here they are able to support one another in their own host community.

Hosts also have the chance to identify their own training needs, which is a great opportunity for them as they can tailor the training to suit their hosting situation. This ensures the volunteer is fit to host each individual and maintains that quality of service.

It is also important for us to make sure that everybody is comfortable and confident in the hosting journey.

When the young person is being hosted, we offer 24/7 on-call support.

If there ever happens to be an incident that the host doesn’t feel that they are able to handle, then they can call us, and we'll offer that phone support for them.

Why do you think it is important to offer a service like Nightstop in the North East of Scotland?

In 2021, it was established that 720 young people across the city and Shire presented as homeless. From a Scotland-wide perspective, that's a really high number. Nightstop helps prevent this by halting youth homelessness in its tracks.

Nightstop is an important service because, at the moment, a young person who presents as homeless may be offered space in a hostel.

From our understanding, this is not the right option for a young person as they don’t have the support that they would receive from our service.

Nightstop, as a community-hosting

alternative, offers young people a protective, welcoming environment, their own room, a hot evening meal and someone to sit and have a bit of a chat with. Through Nightstop, the young person is also fully supported

by Aberdeen Foyer and the other services we provide, which is just not possible through a stay in a hostel.

What would you say to someone who is considering becoming a host?

Please give us a call if you are thinking of becoming a host with us. I am always happy to have an informal chat with anyone about Nightstop and answer any questions you may have. Since Nightstop has been on the go for decades now, we have got all the answers to any questions or queries.

We also offer regular online information sessions for people considering volunteering with us at Nightstop. This gives anyone a chance to come and find out about the service and the step-by-step process of becoming a host.

We are always looking to expand our network of volunteers to allow the best flexibility for our hosts. Hosts have the prerogative to decide their own availability, a host can offer up their spare room for two weeks out of the entire year for example, we’re really flexible with the commitment required. We constantly look to raise the Nightstop profile and find anyone willing to provide their spare room so that we're able to support as many young people as possible.

Autistic Adult Support Fund open for applications

he Autistic Adult Support Fund launched Wednesday 16th August 2023 with the aim to help adults with an autism diagnosis, self-identified autistic adults, and their families and carers understand what neurodivergence means for them and improve their wellbeing.

The Autistic Adult Support Fund will provide £500,000 for the sixmonth period from October 2023 to end of March 2024.

Facilitated by Inspiring Scotland, funded by the Scottish Government, the Autistic Adult Support Fund builds on the work of a pilot which ran between 2020 and 2023 and funded seven organisations to provide post diagnostic support to autistic people.

Erica Judge, Director of Funds at Inspiring Scotland said: “We are pleased to manage this fund from Scottish Government which will ensure that more autistic people and their families can help better understand their diagnosis by accessing the support they need.

“We know that there is a great need for this programme due to feedback from people who had received support from the pilot project, describing it as life changing.

“Funding will be available for Scottish not-for-profit organisations working closely with autistic people to help close the gap in provision of help and support to this community.”

Small grants of between £15,000 and £30,000 are available to support smaller, grassroots, locally based projects. Large grants of

between £30,001 and £75,000 are available for national or regional projects.

Funding is available until 31 March 2024. It is hoped that this fund will run on a recurring annual basis but is subject to Ministerial approvals as part of Scottish Government's annual budget process.

We are looking for men and women over 60 years old, and the overall goal of our study is to explore the mechanism of action of dietary fibre on the gut microbiota. The gut microbiota includes all the small organisms that live in a healthy gut, for example bacteria. And we think that these bacteria enhance the way our body fights cancer cells. As these bacteria are influenced by what we eat, we think that adding specific dietary fibres to a cancer patients diet might help tolerate the cancer therapy better.

However, there is a long way to go before we can prove this in clinical trials and implement this in routine clinical care. The current study is the first step in our journey.

If you decide to be part of our study, we will ask you to take 3 different dietary fibre supplements for 14 days at a time. We will ask you to add these to water or orange juice and consume them twice a day. At the first and last day in which you will take the different supplements, you be invited to the Human Nutrition Unit, our study facility, for a test day.

On these test days, once you arrive in the morning, we will receive your stool sample and provide you with breakfast. After breakfast, you will be asked to fill in a questionnaire about your quality of life in the last 2 weeks, to assess the effect of the supplement on your health and wellbeing. Lastly, we will take a blood sample 5 hours after breakfast, after which the test day ends.

We will also inform about your diet with questionnaires, as your diet influences your gut microbiome. We do this using 2 different questionnaires; one enquires about your food intake in the last 3 months, the other asks you to keep a food diary to note down all the food and drinks you have consumed in the 3 days before the 6 test days. Your answers to questionnaires, and your stool and blood samples will help us better understand the role of dietary fibre in our gut.

The study will take place in the Rowett institute. Volunteers will be asked to attend the Rowett Institute once every 2 weeks over the course of 11 weeks (a total of 6 visits). Which days of the week the visits will take place will be decided based on the preference of the volunteer and our researcher’s schedule. The visit will start between 8am and 9am. We have free dedicated volunteer parking on site and provide a £75 gratuity for completing the study.

Excellent support and guidance is provided to all volunteers. When you express an interest in participating, we will invite you to the Rowett Institute for an informal chat. We will explain the study, what we ask of you, and you can ask us any questions you might have. We will also confirm you meet our inclusion criteria. After that, if you are still keen to participate, you will be asked to sign an informed consent form, which officially enrols you in the study. You can call or email us anytime with questions. On the test days, we will make sure to have all questionnaires etc ready for you.

There is no previous experience necessary to be a volunteer! We will explain everything that will be asked of you before you decide to take part in the study.

How To….Set Up A Tool Library – online training

Aberdeen Adult Protection Committee is holding an informal workshop discussion to review our strategy for how we communicate with people to help prevent harm happening to vulnerable adults.

What messages should we be communicating? Who should we be aiming to reach? And how?

We want to hear from you!

Who? The group will be a mix of about 30 people including those who have experience of being involved in Adult Protection, wider members of the public, and staff from a range of agencies.

What? A brief overview of some background information will be provided, and then most of the session will be spent hearing from you.

This Climate Cafe from Aberdeen Climate Action looks into the future to speculate how NE farmers may change their farming practices to satisfy the market, government’s limits on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, while enhancing biodiversity and tree cover.

Our panel of experts are Roger Polsoon, Knock Farm, Huntly; Prof Peter Smith, University of Aberdeen; and Prof Bill Slee, James Hutton Institute (retired).

Roger will outline how he has made his farm meet the 2045 requirements, while at the same time maintaining profitability and increasing wildlife. Pete Smith will describe processes to maximise soil organic matter, while minimising GHG emissions from the soil and livestock. Prof Bill Slee will discuss policies the government will have to implement to ensure farmers curtail their GHG emissions, enhance areas of their farms as habitats for biodiversity, plant trees of a good standard, all while keeping their farms commercially viable.

After the three contributions, you the audience, will be able to ask questions and suggest ideas.

Join Scottish Communities Climate Action Network for this first in a series of ‘How to….’ training events they are running in collaboration with some of their members who have gained valuable experience in developing climate action projects in specific areas and are ready to offer in-depth skillshare sessions.

With this training, you’ll gain the confidence to start a similar climate action project where you live.

Rosie Harrison from Fixing for a Future will share her experience of setting up East Linton Tool Library, all the learnings and stories from the seed of the idea to the present moment, and how the project is always evolving to meet the specific needs of the community. There will be lots of opportunities for questions and discussion!

Our centre has been designed with all in mind and to prove it to you we’re offering a free session for anyone aged 55+. Plus, if you’re an unpaid carer you can also attend this event for free.

Aberdeen City’s Child Protection Committee are delighted to announce the development of a Grampian wide Learning Event in collaboration with Aberdeenshire and Moray’s CPCs. Multi-agency professionals from across Grampian are invited to attend an in-person event which will focus on Parental Substance Use and Safe Sleep.

We have a number of key speakers from across the country who have kindly agreed to be a part of this learning event and share their expert knowledge - Elie Godsi, Consultant Clinical Psychologist; Dr Gill Burton Education Manager for Scottish Cot Death Trust; Tricia MacLean and Adam Mellis Harm Reduction Officers with Police Scotland.

The full programme for this event is still in development with more information to be added to the programme, particularly applying a local lens to Parental Substance Use and Safe Sleep across the North East.

ACIS Youth, Mental Health Aberdeen’s children and young people’s counselling service, are looking to appoint a school counsellor to work in an Aberdeen City based Academy School. The hours of work will be up to 30 hours per week during school hours.

WEA have an exciting opportunity for Sessional Tutors in Outdoor Learning for Well-being to join our Reach Out project team in Aberdeen.

As a Sessional Tutor, you will help to provide high quality learning activity to groups of Reach Out learners in an outdoor environment.

The scale and breadth of our curriculum offer is what makes us special. It is our most powerful and important tool in meeting the needs of our learners and communities, regardless of starting point or educational need. We bring learning to the learner, whether it be in local trusted venues or their living room via online learning.

Reporting to the Education Coordinator, in this sessional tutor role you will work with other project staff to deliver outdoor learning for well-being provision within the WEA Reach Out Project in the North East of Scotland.

This well-established project supports students who may have substance misuse issues, mental health challenges, going through the criminal justice system, and may be long term unemployed.

The positive impact of ‘the outdoors’ is well recognised, and we have found this to be the case for our learners. Our current Outdoor offer includes a walking group, football, environmental art, the John Muir Award, a gardening group, occasional group residentials and day trips to e.g. National Trust properties, beaches etc. Most activity takes place in Aberdeen itself, with some trips to locations in Aberdeenshire.

You will encourage learners to break down social isolation, improve confidence, and improve mental and physical wellbeing through a positive experience in the outdoors.

Individual applicants do not need to be experienced/competent in all of the above areas of outdoor learning.

We are seeking a Visitor Experience Assistant to interact with all visitors in a friendly, outgoing manner ensuring they have a 5* experience at all times.

This flexible role will cover engagements on the exhibition floor, delivering shows and workshops to schools, public groups and birthday parties and to support the Head of Business Development in the planning, setting up and delivery of successful corporate events.
