Aberdeen Children’s Charity Announces Third Year of Support from the Rotary Clubs Annual Raffle Charlie House and the Rotary Clubs of Aberdeen, in partnership with C&M McDonald and Bon Accord Aberdeen, race ahead with the Annual Raffle in aid of the Big Build Appeal and good causes in the North East.

A
berdeen-based children’s charity Charlie House has announced the launch of the Rotary Clubs of Aberdeen and District Annual Raffle, in partnership with C&M McDonald and Bon Accord Aberdeen. This is the third year the charity is partnering with the Rotary Clubs’ Annual Car Raffle, which is set to raise thousands of pounds to support their Big Build Appeal and other local causes. Members of 24 of the Rotary Clubs in Aberdeen and the North East generously donate their time to selling tickets each year and will rally once again to support the 2022 raffle. Alan Pirie, Chairman of the organising committee says, “‘This will be the third year in a row that we are supporting Charlie House as the main benefitting charity of our Annual Car Raffle.” “We have been holding a car raffle since 2000 and this year could see us selling our 1 millionth ticket. Help us reach this milestone along and help Charlie House edge closer to the completion of their Big Build project!” says Alan. “Last year we donated £17600 to Charlie House. Now that the restrictions from the pandemic have been lifted, we hope that this will be the most successful year of our partnership. Tickets will be sold by Clubs at various events throughout the North East too,” he says. The raffle tickets will be sold at the cost of £1 per ticket from the Charlie House retail unit in the lower mall at Bon Accord, opposite O2, where shoppers can view the car and learn more about the work of the Rotary. These will be available to purchase from the unit via a QR code or at ReCHarge Café
on the upper mall until November when it is manned by the Rotary Clubs members up until Christmas eve when it is drawn. Craig Stevenson, Centre Manager at Bon Accord says, “It is fantastic that we can lend our support to the annual raffle again this year for such an important local cause. We hope for great success in this year’s partnerships.” This year’s prize winner will drive away in a Suzuki Vitara SZ-T Hybrid valued at £23,759, kindly supplied by C&M McDonald. Carol McDonald of C&M McDonald says, “We are delighted to be involved with this year’s raffle and wish Charlie House every success with the Big Build Appeal.” Speaking of the ongoing support Susan Crighton, Director of Fundraising at Charlie House, says, “We are delighted to be partnering with The Rotary Clubs again and we’re confident that this year it will be even bigger and better than the last.” She continues, “Support from the local community over the last few years has
been incredible. We are so pleased to have the car supplied by C&M McDonald and the retail unit space from Bon Accord. We would like to say a huge thank you to the Rotary Clubs, C&M McDonald and Bon Accord for supporting us and the raffle this year. With an amazing prize up for grabs, we’re certain that people will flock to the centre for their chance to win. The raffle will give the Charlie House Big Build Appeal a BIG boost at the end of the year and could see us racing towards important milestones, like laying the first bricks of the specialist support facility in Aberdeen so that children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions don't need to travel over 100 miles to get the specialist support they need. Clan Cancer Support turns up the heat with new fundraising challenge Clan Cancer Support is looking for thrill seekers to bare their soles as part of a daring fundraising challenge this November. The charity is calling for people to take on a fire-walk in the grounds of its Aberdeen base with participants going barefoot over two metres of burning embers, emitting temperatures of around 500 degrees celsius. The event is due to take place on Saturday, November 19, with all proceeds used to help the charity provide free services for people affected by cancer across north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. Clan’s services include information and support, counselling, complementary therapies, social and wellbeing activities and dedicated
support for children and families. Ruth McIntosh, Clan’s Charity Development Manager, said: “This is one of our more adventurous fundraising challenges and we’re excited to revive it this year as we return to more face-to-face fundraising activities. “This is a unique and fun team activity and it’s also an opportunity for individuals to empower themselves and tick off a bucket list item. Aberdeen isn’t known for being warm in November, but we’ll be sure to change that on the night!” Clan is coordinating the event in partnership with Fire Walk Scotland

NESCAN Hub and shmu: Our Green Journey Film Screenings NESCAN Hub are proud to partner with Station House Media Unit (shmu) to create and present their latest film exploring and highlighting the amazing climate action projects happening throughout the North East, as they work towards mitigating climate change in our communities. The film will also be shown throughout the north east of Scotland as part of Climate Week North East 2023 (24th March to 2nd April 2023), with dates and locations to be confirmed. NESCAN Hub have been busy over the summer months with this exciting new film, aiming to tell the story of some of the great climate change projects taking place across Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, from tree growing projects to locally led recycling initiatives. These will all be combined into one amazing film which will be shown in theatres across Aberdeenshire and Aberdeen City, and later available on NESCAN Hub's website and YouTube page. Each film screening will be attended by the film’s stars who will take questions from the audience and

The Allotment Market Stall (TAMS) has been helping the Aberdeen community eat healthy, locally grown food since 2013. They take excess produce from allotment holders and sell it to the public at stalls held each Friday during a 12 week period over summer in Victoria Park, Seaton Park and Duthie Park in the city. As well as sourcing food from local growers TAMS also grows produce at their site at Grove Nurseries – not only presenting the opportunity to provide more locally grown food for sale but also to engage with green fingered volunteers. The project was supported in part through a grant from the Scottish Government’s Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund which was distributed in the city by ACVO. Watch our film to discover how the project is helping to promote a sense of positive wellbeing with volunteers and the wider community by bringing people together over the love of healthy, local, sustainable food.

Dates-n-Mates is Scotland’s first friendship and dating agency run by and for adults with a learning disability. They have over a decade’s experience of connecting people across the country and the group based in Aberdeen covers not just the city but caters for people living in the surrounding area. Their work is underpinned by a human rightsbased approach with a strong belief that it is a person’s right to live life free of discrimination and to develop friendships and relationships of their choosing; to love and be loved. We caught up with members of the team and participants from the group to hear more about their work in the area and how it brings people together and facilitates the creation of meaningful relationships. “We are here for anyone with learning disabilities over the age of 18 interested in
joining a community of likeminded adults who like socialising, having fun and getting out in to the city to enjoy what it has to offer” said Louise McEwan, Regional Lead for Dates‑n‑Mates Aberdeen. “We offer a varied calendar of social events in local venues, allowing people to make new friends. Dates-n-Mates also deliver training workshops which are geared towards building confidence and communication skills that help our members to form meaningful and lasting friendships and relationships. We also help people find love by offering guidance, chaperoning dates, and helping people feel confident with the idea of them dating. Members can join us whether they are looking for friends or more, and our diverse group is welcoming, inclusive and accommodating. “Some of our most popular events are simple things like bowling, museums and pub nights – but at the heart of everything we do is the idea that people should be able to enjoy their lives without restriction.”
ACVO News 26 September2022 Liz Slowey and Chris Scott were some of the first members to join Dates-n-Mates in Aberdeen around seven years ago and still regularly attend events. Liz explains why they mean so much. “One of the big things for me and many of the others who attend is the independence gained, often without the need for carers. Because of the way the organisation operates, with those in attendance being encouraged to help one another, people can feel confident to come along without the need for that extra support. Although some members do come with carers or support workers which is fine; some feel they can come themselves and know they will be in a safe space. We offer each other help and advice on how to get around on public transport too so members of the group can familiarise themselves with these which helps with that feeling of independence. “Dates-n-Mates is one of the few groups that doesn’t make it difficult to join, with the only criteria being over 18 and with a learning disability. We are not connected to only one organisation, so members can have their support and social care provided by any
organisation (or none at all) and still attend our events. We sometimes partner with other local groups too and encourage anyone interested to come along” “For people with learning disabilities, although they may be receiving support in other areas of their lives, there is often a gap in that easy access to a social life and this has been made worse over the years through various cutbacks - there used to be lots of groups and activities available that we could access free or for a small charge but not so much now. That’s why Dates n Mates is so important – it’s affordable and provides activities which we can easily attend and access. It really is vital for that sense of community.” Sarah Paterson, Director at Dates n Mates, agrees. Her journey with Dates n Mates began in 2015 when she joined the team upon leaving college. She feels that the support offered by the group has allowed her to develop her own confidence and communication skills and she now helps others with these very topics.

As someone who has a learning disability myself and I also have autism, I wasn’t sure where I would work after I left college or what kind of job I would have” said Sarah.

for people to feel comfortable in discussing what’s on their mind.” As an organisation which has community and social gathering at the centre of what they do, Dates n Mates, and the people they work with, found the pandemic, and the restrictions it brought with it, to be an uncertain and challenging time. “Although we moved a lot of our sessions online it was a difficult time for everyone” remembers Sarah. “Everyone said that they felt so isolated in their homes and they were just so unsure on what to do. Not everyone was able to access our online sessions as using video calls was so unfamiliar to some of our group members. Since Dates n Mates is so focussed on bringing people together and facilitating face-to-face social interactions, it wasn’t ideal but like other groups in the same situation, we made it work.”
“When I heard about Dates-n-Mates and the Director job which is for people with lived experience of a learning disability, I knew this was the perfect role for me and I’ve been here ever since. When I first started I wasn’t sure about how to communicate well with others but think this is a skill I’ve really developed over the years. I used to find it really difficult to take part in social activities but now, after working with the organisation over the years, I've learned to be much more confident in meeting new people, hosting events and working with our members to develop and deliver workshops. “Not only has Dates n Mates helped me grow as a person but it’s something I see in the people who attend our events all the time. I love being able to connect with members and feel I can relate to their situation as I’ve been there too. I think it’s important to help our members to feel like they can overcome barriers especially when it comes to social interactions, I want people to feel comfortable in sharing ideas and speaking about themselves in a positive way. Being able to talk about struggles and mental health is also really important so I try to provide that space

close one another again. Although we are still working with Covid safety in mind, we are starting to see a bit more normality again.”
Liz, who actively looks to help and support others within the group has earned numerous prizes through the Champion Scheme.
“As Sarah and Liz mentioned, this is really important for us given the type of organisation we are; the connections we facilitate really can change lives. People might start off really shy when they join Dates n Mates but as they learn new skills and see the set up, their confidence develops. We really encourage the sharing of ideas and experience and see this as an important part of our work. Our project is driven by our

As well as providing opportunities for people to come together and get to know each other as mates, the organisation also facilitates dating within their member group. Lisa Coutts, who has recently started a relationship with another member of the group is really happy with the way things are going.

When considering this part of their work, Sarah reflects the ethos of Dates n Mates as an organisation in saying “I think everyone deserves the right to find love” and when considering why this is such an important thing for those who attend the group, Louise has some thoughts. “It’s often one of those things that goes overlooked. People living with disabilities need health care, they may need support to physically move around or to independently live their lives day to day – but socialising and forming relationships is equally important. I think there may be a bit of societal misunderstanding when it comes to people with a learning disability dating, but as an organisation we hold the view that forming relationships and finding love is a human right and everyone should have equal opportunities to do that - why can't someone with a learning disability have a partner and have a relationship? “As well as offering support while dates are taking place, we equip group members with the knowledge they need in advance – we have courses on boundaries and consent, what a healthy relationship is. Sometimes people can take it personally if the person they like doesn’t like them back but we are here to offer emotional support and reassure that that is a normal part of dating and forming relationships” Sarah, who develops a lot of the workshops takes suggestions and feedback in to account and shapes the support on offer around the needs of members. “Recently I was speaking with one of our members about what he would like to see with one of our workshops” remembers Sarah. “He was hesitant at first but eventually said he would like tips on how to talk with women. I was really pleased that he was able to take that step to discuss this openly and that we can adapt the work we do to help provide tools to boost confidence and to become more socially equipped to experience different situations”
Although Dates n Mates have a variety of events on offer for members (including group favourite ten pin bowling and Pie and a Pint – an idea first proposed Liz) they still encounter some issues with inclusivity when looking at attending certain venues. “It’s still quite tricky to find a fully accessible venue” said Louise, “we’ve also found that a lot of venues don’t understand what accessibility means – they will say ‘Yes we are accessible’ but then their toilets are situated downstairs.” “Yes that’s true, so a lot of our research time goes in to finding fully accessible venues as our members have a variety of needs – some are wheelchair users or have mobility issues so venues have to be able to accommodate all of us” agrees Sarah. “The places we do visit though are really great, make our members feel welcome and they always have an amazing time.” “We really do! I don’t know where I would be without Dates n Mates” reflects Liz, “I’d probably be stuck at home quite a lot and would never have been able to meet all the friends that I have or developed the

confidence to share the things I know with others in order to give them more opportunities”. As the meeting wrapped up, Regional Lead, Louise, was asked her thoughts on why she felt the organisation was so important. “I think over the last couple of years especially we have seen the importance in having a connection to other people, being able to open up to someone with a shared experience and being able to talk over things you are uncertain about. Forming social bonds and creating relationships is essential for everyone’s wellbeing. “A lot of our members have said that they have had feelings of uncertainty when it comes to going out and meeting people, that they don’t feel comfortable doing it. If we can offer a little bit of help and support and provide a safe environment where members can meet people and make friends without judgement then that’s great. Some people with a learning disability have struggled with developing social skills that often others take for granted, especially as some were not fully integrated in mainstream schools when younger. I think that during the pandemic a lot of people came to realise the importance of bringing peoples together and having friends and shared experiences. With Dates n Mates we’ve known that all along and will continue to champion this for all people with learning disabilities. Volunteer Befrienders – Aberdeen Financial Resilience Project – TLC – Befriending Service We can all feel lonely and isolated at times and those feelings can be more intense and devastating if you are also facing financial hardship. Aberdeen North and South Foodbanks have come together, with funding from the Trussell Trust, to provide a financial resilience service where individuals who require a food parcel can receive money, debt, and energy advice. Aberdeen Citizen Advice Bureau will provide this advice. This service which will support those struggling with financial hardship will be supported by our Befriending Project. Volunteer befrienders will encourage those referred, to engage with the wider project. Our aim is to ensure that our trained and compassionate volunteers provide a lifeline to people, in the form of friendship and offer a helping hand to enable them to engage with the financial support on offer. If you would like to be a part of this holistic service, please apply to become a Volunteer Befriender. Activities include: • To befriend individuals who have used the food bank and who require financial/energy advice from Citizens Advice Bureau advisors and who would benefit from someone to accompany them to their appointment. • To participate in the TLC Volunteer befriender induction programme, and ad hoc training throughout the year as and when required. • To attend 3 monthly volunteer supervision sessions. • Commit to a regular 1hr 30min befriending session each week. • To establish and maintain appropriate boundaries within the befriending relationship. • To ensure that confidentiality is always upheld and be willing to report any concerns, including safeguarding issues to the project co-ordinator. • To work within a non-discriminatory framework. • TLC are looking for befrienders to ideally commit to the project for at least 12months. *(Note: Volunteer befrienders will not be asked or required to meet any personal care needs.) Excellent support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers. Includes two core training nights which gives befrienders the knowledge and skills required before starting, as well as continuous training every few months to build on befriender knowledge and skills. Events Volunteers - dates-n-mates Aberdeen Would you like to support people with learning disabilities to socialise and make friends? dates-n-mates is a friendship and dating agency for adults with learning disabilities. We are looking for Event Volunteers to attend organised social events to help our members to interact while they're together. As an Events Volunteer, your role is to help our members enjoy socialising in safe and friendly environments. Our events include going to restaurants, pubs, cinema, tenpin bowling, day trips and walks. The events are sociable, great fun and your role is very rewarding. A large number of people with learning disabilities feel lonely and socially isolated. Your support will help to change this. Events take place afternoons and evenings and usually last 2 hours. We ask our volunteers to commit to a minimum of 1 event per month. dates-n-mates offer a variety of training and support to our volunteers. Befrienders - Barnardo’s Aberdeen Young Carers A young carer is someone up to the age of 18 who provides unpaid help and support to a relative, friend or neighbour who due to illness or disability cannot manage to live independently without the carer’s help. It may involve practical support like cooking, housework, or emotional support. Aberdeen Young Carers are looking for volunteers to spend some quality time with a child or young person between the ages of 5-18 on a regular basis, getting to know them, and building up a positive relationship by being reliable and non-judgemental when listening to them. A befriender volunteer will support the young person to enjoy activities and experiences within the Aberdeen community therefore reducing isolation, and promoting self-esteem and confidence. This is a flexible opportunity and you can commit to meeting with a child or young person for a few hours on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis depending on what time you have available. This would take place out with school hours, predominately over evenings or weekends. Volunteer Nightstop Hosts - Aberdeen Foyer Do you have a spare room in your home that you’d be willing to open for a young person who has nowhere to stay? Our Nightstop service relies on ordinary people – just like you - with a spare bedroom which they are willing to offer to a guest. We’re looking for Nightstop hosts to volunteer to provide a young person with a safe place to stay, a hot meal, the opportunity to wash and breakfast the next day. Ideally you’ll also provide a listening ear to make a young person feel safe and secure. • Application: Hosts need to be able to offer a young person their own private bedroom, a hot meal, breakfast and a packed lunch if needed. Access to a hot shower or bath and the use of laundry facilities within the host’s home should also be accessible. Hosts who require their young person to be out of the house through the day will be supported by the Nightstop Co-ordinator. Hosts can receive a stipend to cover costs. • Safety Checks: as part of the process, Hosts are required to complete a PVG check; a home visit will also take place. This type of support isn’t right for everyone, Nightstop must be a safe and appropriate option for both young person and the volunteer hosts. • Training: training covers an introduction to youth homelessness, boundaries, practical tips and safeguarding rules. And we’re always on hand for a supportive phone call. • Matching: Nightstop hosts will be matched with young people, based on things like location, home environment and of course the availability of host. This might involve mediation with family to move back to the family home or help to explore all housing options. Aberdeen Foyer in conjunction with Nightstop offers a holistic approach. We discuss the options for continuing education, training and/or employment options; as well supporting the health and wellbeing of the young person. • Follow-up after stay: when the young person’s stay has ended, the hope is that we will have helped them on to a positive destination. Aftercare in the form of a debrief will be offered to both the host and young person and at this point, Hosts might identify training needs and support required. Volunteer Drivers: Community Outreach Group Community Outreach Group provides support to homeless and vulnerable people in the City of Aberdeen. We provide meals and essentials for the homeless and vulnerable people of Aberdeen on a Wednesday and Sunday evening. We are looking for drivers to pick up and drop off various food donations. Mary Salmond Trust
The Mary Salmond Trust offers grants up to £500 to groups and individuals from the Northeast of Scotland. The trust aims to support the advancement of community development, by encouraging activities that have a public benefit. The Trust is also keen to promote projects which focus on children and young people’s health and welfare, training and education, civic responsibility, and volunteering.
During the year to 31 March 2022 the Trustees approved 25 applications for funding support totalling £11,025. The amount of each grant was limited to a maximum of £500. Of these grants, 23 were made to community organisations or charities and 2 were made to individuals. Since the Trust was established in 2007, 413
grants amounting to £175,116 have been awarded, an average of £400 per grant. The next Trustees meeting is 23 October. Completed applications should be submitted by 21 October.

To Absent Friends Festival 2022: Grants Available Small grants available to support remembrance activities in Scotland.
A small grants fund has been set up to support organisations to put on remembrance events as part of this year's To Absent Friends festival. (1-7 November 2022.) Two types of small grants (of up to £300) are available. Community grants: these are for organisations and communities who want to plan private remembrance events at
which their community can come together (online, outside or in small gatherings) to share memories, stories and solace. Public grants: These are for organisations who want to organise an interactive public event (online, outside or in a public space) such as a concert, exhibition or installation, freely open to members of the public. Applications are encouraged from charities, community
groups, care homes, NHS organisations, small businesses, prisons, arts organisations, schools, education institutions and more. The deadline for receipt of applications is 22 September 2022.
