North-East charity Aberdeen Cyrenians unveils its new look

S

tarting life as a soup kitchen organised by Aberdeen University students, Aberdeen Cyrenians has spent over

50 years providing a range of support and care services to vulnerable people and those in crisis in the North-East of Scotland. From these beginnings, Aberdeen Cyrenians has grown into a cornerstone of Aberdeen, supporting the most vulnerable people in the city facing crisis, trauma, addiction, homelessness, and isolation. Chris Bennett-Taylor, Interim CEO of Aberdeen Cyrenians said, “Our refreshed brand identity is focused on our openness, inclusivity and willingness to adapt. We wanted to broaden our reach whilst still being inclusive to those who support us, our service users and staff and volunteers. “Aberdeen Cyrenians may have been around for over 50 years, but we understand that as our organisation evolves, so must our identity. Often when people visit our website, they tell us that they thought that all of our services were focused on homelessness and whilst that’s at the heart of what we do, they didn’t realise that we provide support in other areas, such as to survivors of domestic, gender based and childhood abuse. It’s important to us to raise awareness of these services to ensure

that we have the widest possible reach in terms of supporting those in need.” “Our rebrand project began back in 2020 whilst due to the Covid-19 pandemic we witnessed a drastic increase in people needing support in the city. As the need for support grew, so did our services. Since March 2020 we have launched five new services to help tackle the complex needs people in our community have been facing – many of these issues have been a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. We thought it was the right time to launch our new look as whilst we have quickly had to adapt, we are also always looking towards the future and how we will continue to evolve as a charity to meet the needs of our local community.” Sam Begg, Fundraising and Communications Manager said, “Each aspect of our branding has been

carefully thought out – from our logo that represents Aberdeen Cyrenians as pioneers for openness and conversation, to our warmer colour emphasising our flexibility and willingness to change as we evolve. We are delighted to share our new look and we hope that everyone will love it as much as we do.” “We would also like to remind everyone that our services are still running as normal and we are here for anyone who needs support. Our door is always open and our services fully available to anyone who may need them.” To view Aberdeen Cyrenians new look, you can visit their website at www.weareac.org. If you need support, you can call Aberdeen Cyrenians on 0300 303 0903, or to find out more about what services are available, please visit the website at www.weareac.org.

"Support, understand and listen to me" finds new research in to the Covid-19 school experience

Meg Thomas, Head of Research, Policy & Participation and Martin Dorchester, Chief Executive of includem, unveiling the report at The Scottish Parliament

ACVO News 11 October 2021

Scottish children, young people and families charity – includem has recently released new research into the school experience over the course of the Covid-19 pandemic.

I

ncludem’s new report calls for schools to be underpinned by a children’s rights perspective to ensure that children and young people can have their voices heard, increased provision of whole family support to ‘bridge the gap’ between home and school, and the expansion of restorative practices to both build positive relationships and help young people feel they can put mistakes behind them.

months have posed unprecedented challenges for pupils across Scotland, and it is vital that the voices of children and young people are at the heart of their learning moving forward.

The charity surveyed the views of 111 young people supported by includem in Aberdeen, Dundee, Falkirk, Fife, Glasgow, South Lanarkshire, Stirling and West Dunbartonshire.

"In this report, the young people we work with stress the importance of being supported, understood, and listened to in a learning environment that ensures their rights are respected and upheld, and is underpinned by a culture of mutual respect.

Key findings include:

“We must listen to what children and young people have told us they need from their education moving forward, and act on it accordingly. It is our collective responsibility to ensure they all have the tools and the environment in which their potential can be fully realised.”

Meg Thomas, Head of Research, Policy & Participation added: “The young people involved in this research were already struggling with the school setting before the pandemic. The situation of remote learning and fractured relationships with teachers made a return to school even more difficult for them. They are the young people for whom the fallout of the pandemic will continue for years to come if we don’t listen to what they have said and act on it.”

Home learning negatively impacted children and young people’s enjoyment of school, confidence in completing their homework, interest in learning, and the level to which they felt supported – however, experiences of school were more positive on the second ‘return’ to school than pre-covid Children and young people want to be heard and respected. They told us they need: More opportunities to shape how and what they learn To be judged on the ‘here and now’ rather than on past behaviour For school staff to get to know them better and build positive relationships Family support can help ‘bridge the gap’ between home and school – helping children and young people engage more fully in their education in a way that works for them Martin Dorchester, Chief Executive of includem said: “The last seventeen

The Leanne Fund marks a decade of dedicated support

T

he Leanne Fund is marking a decade of dedicated support for those with Cystic Fibrosis and their families. The charity’s latest Annual Report outlines the support provided for hundreds of people affected by CF and their families in 2020; the expansion of services to additional regions across Scotland; and the ongoing fundraising drives and events that have raised thousands of pounds over the last ten years. In January 2010, the charity was set up by Chrisetta and Willie Mitchell, the parents of Leanne (21) who suffered from Cystic Fibrosis and passed away in 2009. Inspired by Leanne’s resilience and drive to live her life to the full, the charity was set up to fill the gaps in support services and to enhance the quality of life for those affected by Cystic Fibrosis. Since its establishment, the charity has expanded to offer social, practical, emotional and financial assistance to individuals and families across Highland, Eilean Siar, Orkney, Shetland, Grampian, Tayside and Fife NHS Health Boards and some families in Dumfries and Galloway. The Annual Report presented to the Committee outlined the ten years of growth and success.

Outlining the current status of the charity and the challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic, Chair Ann Marie Murray stated: “The services provided are broad and include special treats and experiences to allow families to make special memories; to assist young people in gaining more independence through the ‘On the Move’ initiative; to help people with CF ‘Get Active’ and maintain good health; and grants for emergency circumstances or to help to ease financial pressures. In the last year, there has also been a focus on mental health and counselling and mindfulness services have been added. TV cards and ‘Pamper Hampers’ also help individuals during what can be lengthy stays in hospital. The ‘Over the Rainbow’ service also supporting those in the final stages of the illness.” She added that the nature of the pandemic had made it even more essential to provide support to those with Cystic Fibrosis who were classed as particularly vulnerable to the virus and were told to shield for 12 weeks. Fundraising has been key in the expanse of The Leanne Fund and the Covid-19 meant events needed to adapt to become virtual and socially distanced. Some fundraisers changed, such as the proposed Coast to Coast cycle by employees of BP in Aberdeen. They

instead amended the challenge to a remote one, where collectively they cycled a total of 24,901 miles – the distance around the world – during September. Other fundraisers ranged from bake sales and raffles, a virtual London Marathon, in-car bingo, 50km run in one day, and an auction of beautifully hand-carved guitars. Staff in the hospitals where support is provided have also taken on fundraising challenges. External funding from the Scottish Government’s Wellbeing Fund and the Bank of Scotland REACH funding programme have been key and support from the Lord Provost's Charitable Trust, Tesco Bags of Help and Aberdeen University Student Union's Raising and Giving group (AUSA RAG) have been a huge help. The Leanne Fund’s tenth anniversary was also marked in the Scottish Parliament by MSP for the Western Isles, Alasdair Allan. He congratulated the Fund for the significant

achievements in providing support for those with cystic fibrosis and their families across the Highlands and Islands and Grampian regions. Highlighting the growth of the charity, the report concludes: “Our proudest achievement is being able to help a growing number of people over a greater geographical area of Scotland, now we are established in Tayside. The positive feedback received from service users year-on-year goes a long way to show the impact our services have on their lives, and how appreciative they are to have this support that was previously not available to them.” The Leanne Fund is run by Development Manager Chrisetta Mitchell who is supported in her work by a committee of volunteers. Focus on journey of change at Grampian Housing Association

T

he launch of new neighbourhood officer roles and use of customer experience feedback were among the initiatives announced at Grampian Housing Association’s recent annual general meeting. They form part of the Association’s journey of change to ensure services to tenants are customer centric with the aim to drive improved customer satisfaction. Dr Abhi Agarwal, who was re-elected as chairman, highlighted that the pandemic had provided useful learning for the Association about alternative ways of working. This had resulted in development of Grampian’s digital approach from the perspective of tenants and customers to support service delivery to become

a digital provider, allowing customers more access to online services and offering more choice and flexibility to tenants. Commenting on his re-election, Dr Agarwal said: “It has been a demanding yet rewarding second year as chairman. We feel that we are emerging from the pandemic and that a “new normal” is perhaps beginning to win through. "However, we are in no doubt that the last 18 months have badly affected many of our tenants and customers, their families and our communities. We expect the impact will be long lasting so our challenge is to do better and more for those we are here to help. "Our charitable purpose to deliver affordable housing and excellent customer focussed services has never been more important. I really appreciate the staff teams who have performed exceptionally well to help and support our tenants and customers despite the pandemic challenges.” Members attending the meeting also heard about the Association’s successes in the launch of “These Homes”, a new digital lettings service for housing applicants; tackling the climate challenge and contributing to the Scottish Government’s emissions reductions targets by using renewable energy through installing solar PV with battery storage whilst supporting tenants to rise out of fuel poverty;

C

lan Cancer Support is calling on bidders to support its auction finale on Monday 1st November. The legacy of the recent ‘Light the North’ lighthouse trail will continue when all 50 large lighthouse sculptures and 8 small lighthouses take centre stage in the grand finale at Thainstone Exchange, Inverurie, which will be both an in-person and on-line live event. The auction is supported by the ANM Group. Based in Aberdeen, the charity covers the whole of north-east Scotland, Moray, Orkney and Shetland. CLAN has a presence in Ballater, Banchory, Buckie, Crimond, Elgin, Buckie, Inverurie, Lossiemouth, Turriff, Kirkwall and Lerwick. Fiona Fernie, Clan's Head of Income Generation and Business Development and Project Director for Light the North, says, “The 10-week ‘Light the North’ lighthouse trail, in partnership with Wild in Art, has been embraced by the people of the Northeast – individuals, families, artists,

local businesses, community groups and schools have all been fully immersed in this colourful, exciting trail across the country whilst raising funds for Clan Cancer Support. Fiona continues, “The lighthouse sculptures each represent a safe haven, a beacon in a storm, navigation through troubled waters – all very much aligned with Clan’s aims. They now hold a special place in the heart of the artists who created them, the people who have visited them and Clan’s service users who will ultimately benefit from them. Cancer patients have been particularly hard hit during the pandemic due to delays in diagnosis and treatment. Clan has helped people live with and beyond a cancer diagnosis for over 38 years, but we need the support of projects and events such as ‘Light the North’ to continue being here for them and to support even more people affected by cancer.” Fiona concludes, “Whether it’s to brighten your office, make a

statement in your garden or to give someone special the ultimate surprise gift, bidders will continue this legacy and the funds raised from the auction will go on to aid essential cancer support services for people, right in the heart of our communities all across the North-east. We can’t wait to see where these very special sculptures will end their journey and look forward to the excitement of the in-person and on-line bids coming on the 1st November.” All of the sculptures available for bidding can be viewed in-person ahead of the auction at the ‘Light the North’ Farewell Weekend from 29 – 31st September at the Gordon Barracks in Bridge of Don lightthenorth.co.uk/event/farewellweekend/ To express interest in bidding on the evening, a registration form should completed at clanhouse.wufoo.com/forms/q2ombjc1v4 x3ed/ or for further information email lighthousekeeper@clancancersupport.org

DITCH DEBT WITH DIGNITY LAUNCH DEBT HELP RESOURCE TO SUPPORT PEOPLE IN FINANCIAL CRISIS In the wake of the COVID pandemic and with the furlough support scheme coming to a close at the end of September, it’s likely that more people than ever will be struggling with financial pressures. In a bid to deliver critical support in a confidential and compassionate manner, debt support and advice charity Ditch Debt with Dignity, has launched a free online resource to help people regain control of their finances.

identifying urgent situations with lifealtering consequences and prioritising debts, to building savings for the future and establishing sustainable financial habits.

The Road to Reclaiming Financial Peace is an interactive suite of videos which offers guidance to people who are struggling to manage their finances and support to cope with the emotional pressures that accompany this. With a focus on both mental health and practical debt solutions, the video encourages the viewer to work through the journey at their own pace, from

Ditch Debt with Dignity was launched in Scotland in 2014 by chartered financial planner Wendy Fleming. As well as delivering practical debt solutions to those in financial crisis and providing a safe space for people who feel they have nowhere to turn, the charity strives to remove the shame and stigma associated with debt.

It provides tried and tested processes for reclaiming control of financial matters and shares numerous free resources, signposting to websites offering specialist support and giving access to downloadable templates to help with budgeting and debt control.

ACVO News 27 October 2021

Speaking about the new resource, Wendy said, “Throughout the pandemic creditors have been very lenient with their clients but we expect this to change when furlough ends. This is likely to lead to a surge in people looking for help with financial problems. Although furlough was welcomed it has meant that for those people who are just managing, the reduction of money coming in every month has been enough for them to slide into debt. “We have responded to the current situation by producing this interactive video which will provide people with the guidance they need to help themselves and encourages them to ask for help if they get stuck. We want to get the word out to anyone who is struggling with debt that they are not alone and that there is always a way to gain control and establish a healthy financial foundation.”

The video launched on Monday 6th September and is free to any person who feels isolated and alone with debts that are overwhelming. It can be accessed at ditchdebtwithdignity.com/ Ditch Debt with Dignity also offers a free, non-judgemental, confidential and professional advice service delivered by a team of experienced debt advisors. For more information on how they can help with debt repayment plans and provide a positive and fresh perspective for the future, contact info@ditchdebtwithdignity.com. As a charity Ditch Debt with Dignity relies on grants and donations to continue to deliver financial advice services, and these can be made at https://bit.ly/3kQXblD There is also a volunteer opportunity available. THE GREAT GLEN FUNDRAISER Rachel Thompson updates ACVO News following the completion of her stand up paddle board challenge

ACVO News 29 October 2021 Well, that’s is done and dusted! 60 miles travelled over the beautiful and sometimes rather turbulent waters between Ben Nevis and one of my favourite cities, Inverness. What an amazing journey its been, from learning how to paddle board back in April with Adventure Aberdeen in minus 2 degree’s and snow blizzards, to sharing my story and gathering a huge amount of support and donations and then obviously getting on with the mammoth task in hand, the Great Glen.

I never anticipated this challenge to be easy and boy was I right! 7 hours a day paddling was hard going and by the end of each day my body ached for a warm shower and a comfortable bed. The reality was that after each day paddling, I then had to find a spot to put up my hammock and tarpaulin, freshened up in the Loch, attempted to dry out our wet gear by creating washing lines in the camp and then got to chill and have some lovely dinner and get a bit of good craic with my 4 fellow paddlers and support crew. By 10pm we were all so pooped that it was off to the hammock to try and sleep. Our first day paddling we had to tweak the original route as the winds and weather were not on our side. So we hopped on to Loch ness and paddled 18 miles down the black stormy waters to our first wild camp at Foyers. It was a daunting first day, the enormity of the challenge really hit us when we got on the water, it was massive and each turn of a corner just brought us more water and miles in front of us. The days that followed were filled with threats of storms so we had to resort to going where the weather wasn’t going to limit the miles we set out to tackle. After a not so great sleep in the hammock, we started the next morning at 7am, after having a hearty bowl of porridge for breakfast we then preparing our lunches, got back into back into cold, wet, wetsuits and then packed up the campsite ready to move to the next wild camping site.

ACVO News 30 October 2021 We were getting in almost 8,000 steps before we even got back on the water at about 10am. Day 2 we got in a good 20 miles over the stunning Caledonian canal and on to Loch Oich, the scenery was breath-taking, we were blessed with some sunny spells and low winds but also had some very heavy rain showers to contend with. The hammock sleep that night was a great one, I was so exhausted so managed a good 7 hours and was ready for the day ahead.

camping and 4 days paddling across black mirror like canals and Lochs, that final day of paddling across 15 miles of exceptionally choppy water on Loch ness (luckily with a 20 mph wind on my back) and standing up surfing onto the shore at the end point of the trip really made me feel alive and ready to take on the world, and think about what goals I want to achieve next.

Day 3 we went through the canal to Laggan and then crossed Creann Loch on to Loch Lochy, this was a harder paddle as the winds were not as kind to us. The final day we tackled the second half of Loch Ness, boy was that a challenge, we found ourselves being blown by 20 mph winds, and the water was very much like a rough sea. The waves were much bigger than I’d ever had to tackle, but Tacky Feet Thompson managed to do the majority of the 15+ miles on her feet, another win and added confidence to my increasing paddle boarding skillset.

1/ I’m so grateful for all the support that I have had, even from people I don’t know, what an amazing bunch! I’ve never really thought of my journey as anything special but hearing all the messages of encouragement I feel I have probably underestimated how far I’ve come and really not appreciated the work its taken to get where I am today. I need to start setting more goals and keep reaching, I’ve made AKR gym part of my life now (I can’t imagine life without it now!) and will be ensuring the coaches keep me focussed on the future and progression with my fitness.

Saying that, this was the only day I fell off, just the once though! The last leg of the beast involved being swiftly blown into shore ‘Hawaii 5-O’ style surfing my SUP into Fort Augustus, the last few 100 meters happened so quickly, I didn’t even have time to think about getting on my knees to gently get to shore so I was super impressed with myself I must admit! The dismount wasn’t as elegant but I did luckily manage to save myself from faceplanting on the shore. When I think back to what happened 7 years ago, I had felt quite overwhelmed with the enormity of the challenge I was about to embark on. In 2014 my body was broken, I was lucky to be alive, my mental health was in tatters and the extensive damage still to this day causes chronic pain in my back and hips with some days being much harder to cope with than others, especially when it’s cold, so how on earth was I going to cope? Some days I could have easily given up and resigned myself to the fact I wasn’t ever going to be pain free and that I wasn’t going to be fit enough or confident enough to tackle such a challenge. But, as time has passed, the whole experience has instead made me fully value what being alive and living life is all about, tackling this challenge really emphasised that. Life is about taking risks (informed ones of course), reaching, learning, and never giving up. So, after my experience of 3 nights wild

So what have I gained from the Challenge?

2/ I’ve been hung up on what I have lost, I was self-conscious and I grieved the loss of effortless flexibility and movement, comparing my old self to my new self really inhibited me from progress. So, I now try to embrace change in what ever form it comes in. Accepting change helps with moving forward no matter how big or painful the change is. My mantra will be don’t look back, keep looking forward, it just means I might have to do things slightly differently but that’s ok. 3/ I’ve been my worst critic, I have had issues with body image where my scars and oddly shaped leg has been a painful reminder of that fateful day in June 2014. I know see these as medals of honour, something that tells a story and reminds me that I’m a survivor and that I can achieve anything I put my mind to and a reminder I really need to be kinder to myself, I’m worth it. Finally, I super chuffed to say that thanks to everyone’s kindness, support and donations, the Gofundme page has totalled an amazing £2,290. This will be passed on to the Community Outreach Group which support volunteers to help empower homeless people get the support they need to rebuild their lives. Thank you so much to everyone that has supported me with this adventure, your donations will make a massive difference in supporting homeless and vulnerable people in Aberdeen - Rachel

A GOOD RECRUITMENT PARTNERSHIP:

ACVO News 32 October 2021

A CASE STUDY OF SHMU AND TMM RECRUITMENT

ACVO AFFILIATES SPOTLIGHT

ACVO News 33 October 2021

DID YOU SEE THE RECENT SHMU RECRUITMENT FEATURE IN ACVO NEWS?

The article, which promoted the charity’s growth and seriously big ambitions for the future, was part of a campaign to raise awareness about shmu’s work and recruit talented people for key roles across the organisation. TMM Recruitment was selected to manage the recruitment process and in this case study we explain how the partnership worked, hopefully sharing ideas that will support good recruitment in your organisation too.

ACVO News 34 October 2021

THE BUSINESS CASE SHMU IS ON A MISSION TO USE MEDIA TO CREATIVELY TRANSFORM LIVES.... As one of the core cultural organisations in the North East, it is at the forefront of community media development in Scotland, supporting residents in the seven regeneration areas of Aberdeen in radio and video production, traditional and on-line publications, music production and digital inclusion. To help realise shmu’s growth plans, there was an immediate need to recruit for 8 high impact roles: Web Designer Communications Officer Project Administrator North East Culture Collective Programme Coordinator Employability Support Worker Digital CONNECT Coordinator Digital CONNECT Development Worker Creative and Digital Media Trainer

ACVO News 35 October 2021

Couldn’t shmu manage its own recruitment?

Of course, but just because you can doesn’t mean you should. Consider whether it’s the best use of your resources to do it yourself, and whether you’ll achieve the best outcome by going it alone.

“MANAGING THE RECRUITMENT OF SO MANY ROLES SIMULTANEOUSLY WOULD ABSORB A HUGE AMOUNT OF MANAGEMENT TIME. ENGAGING TMM RECRUITMENT WAS THE EQUIVALENT OF BEING GIFTED BACK SEVERAL PRODUCTIVE HOURS A DAY, ENABLING THE SHMU TEAM TO FOCUS ON THEIR OWN JOBS CONFIDENT IN THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE RECRUITMENT CAMPAIGN WAS MANAGED BY A VIRTUAL EXTENSION OF THEIR IN-HOUSE TEAM.” Emma Rutherford, TMM Recruitment

ACVO News 36 October 2021

HOW WE WORKED TOGETHER The breadth of shmu’s impact is remarkable and, way before discussing the actual job roles, the first thing we had to do was gain an overview of the discrete services to help build a picture of the whole organisation. Discussing language and process was essential to ensure we really did understand each other and avoid assumptions which would lead to confusion or misplaced expectations (and ultimately disappointment) down the line. We held 2 virtual meetings with Murray Dawson (Chief Executive) and Chrissie Simpson (Support Team Manager) and they were productive sessions that felt more like a collaborative workshop as we listened to the requirements before suggesting how we’d run the campaign.

Very quickly it became apparent that the brand is synonymous with creativity and community. We’d repeatedly refer back to this when writing the job adverts, creating imagery and discussing the jobs with prospective applicants. shmu prepared comprehensive organisation background and job description documents for each role. We sent these as info packs to applicants when they first noted an interest in a specific role. These valuable resources shaped how we wrote the job adverts to appeal to people searching for purpose in their work, a desire to make a difference.

ACVO News 37 October 2021

“THE MEETINGS WERE SPECIFICALLY TAILORED TO OUR NEEDS AND I COULD VISUALISE THE PARTNERSHIP WORKING WELL. I FELT REASSURED THAT EMMA UNDERSTOOD OUR CULTURE AND VALUES AND WOULD COMMUNICATE WITH PROSPECTIVE APPLICANTS IN A WAY THAT REFLECTED OUR ETHOS WHILE PROVIDING THEM WITH A GOOD RECRUITMENT EXPERIENCE.” Murray Dawson, shmu Chief Executive

ACVO News 38 October 2021

WHAT WE ACHIEVED TOGETHER By collaborating throughout the prelaunch process shmu maintained ownership of the job advert content and visibility over how we used their brand. We co-ordinated the launch of the campaign across multiple TMM Recruitment and shmu media channels, leveraging our social reach and personal networks with all applications directed to a recruiter at TMM Recruitment. Complementing the advertising campaign with proactive approaches to registered candidates on our database we assumed management of the shortlisting process, matching the skills, experience and attributes of applicants against the job specification criteria.

“TMM RECRUITMENT STREAMLINED THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS FOR US. ACROSS ALL THE JOB ROLES THERE WERE OVER 320 REQUESTS FOR INFORMATION PACKS. BY SEGMENTING AND PERSONALISING THE PROCESS, THIS VOLUME OF INTEREST WAS RATIONALISED TO 24 APPLICANTS WHO WE MET FOR INTERVIEW.” Chrissie Simpson, shmu Support Team Manager

ACVO News 39 October 2021

WHY WE LOVED WORKING WITH SHMU… The clarity of purpose helped us quickly understand what shmu is all about, Everyone’s work is about the same thing – transforming the lives of individuals and communities across North East Scotland and supported meaningful conversations with the candidates we targeted. We had the latitude to create job adverts which used language that differentiated shmu. Generic job ads often don’t convey a sense of the culture or team. These job ads focused on the attributes shmu was looking for as well as the skills and experience. Salary details were published for each role along with a deadline date for applications – this transparency is often lacking and frustrates job seekers.

“I HAD VISIBILITY THROUGHOUT THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS, SEE HUGE POTENTIAL IN THE PEOPLE RECRUITED AND KNOW WE’VE ACHIEVED A GREAT RETURN ON INVESTMENT.”

Experienced at working in partnership, shmu was an active contributor and listened to our advice. This meant we worked together efficiently to achieve a common goal. We felt part of something really important to the community in which we live and work.

Murray Dawson, shmu Chief Executive

The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on people with learning disabilities across the UK – latest findings from Wave 3

T

he Coronavirus and Learning Disability Study has been tracking the experiences of adults with learning disabilities through the COVID-19 pandemic over time across the four UK nations. Wave 1 data were collected between December 2020 and February 2021, mostly at a time of UK-wide lockdown and before COVID-19 vaccines were prioritised for all adults with learning disabilities (see here for Wave 1 findings). Wave 2 data were collected between April and May 2021, when restrictions were being eased and COVID-19 vaccination was up and running for adults with learning disabilities (see here for Wave 2 findings). Wave 3 saw collected data from people in July and August 2021 when most restrictions were removed. There are two cohorts of participants in this project. - In Cohort 1, adults with learning disabilities were interviewed by researchers. In Wave 3, 489 adults were interviewed (a 79% retention rate for those who took part in Wave 1).

- In Cohort 2, family carers or paid support staff took part in an online survey about the experiences of the adult with learning disabilities who they supported/cared for. These were likely to be adults with more severe to profound learning disabilities. In Wave 2, 280 family members and support workers completed surveys (a 74% retention rate for those who took part in Wave 1). In Cohort 2 during Wave 3, 118 of the 280 adults were described as having profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). The findings cover a wide range of issues relating to people’s circumstances and experiences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now findings from Wave 3 of the project, published as a main report and six easier to read briefings identified as priorities by the project’s advisory groups, have been released and can be found online at https://bit.ly/2Y9M92g The lives of adults with learning disabilities and their carers are still a

long way from returning to normal despite COVID-19 restrictions lifting. Over half of adults with learning disabilities remain worried to leave the house and more than one in five with profound and multiple learning disabilities are still shielding. Many people are still living restricted lives despite overwhelmingly doing their bit to help control the pandemic. Most adults with learning disabilities are still wearing masks in public, more than nine out of 10 have had both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine, and the same again are willing to receive a booster vaccine. Find out more in the Wave 3 report now.

Grampian Pride Winter Parade 2021 11:00 am - 12:00 pm Union Street Aberdeen,

Grampian Pride is back with a bang, after 2020 (the year never to be talked about again) we are looking forward to hosting Grampian Pride (Winter Style). With even more rainbows and glitter, we will be taking over the city streets on Sunday 24th October 2021 for an LGBT+ pride parade. The parade will leave from Holburn Junction at 11am and Finish at Marischal Collage at 12pm (exact route to be confirmed) Unlike previous years, due to COVID-19 we are asking everyone planning on attending the parade to have a ticket and exchange that for a wristband prior to the parade on 24th Oct. Full details of where to exchange your ticket for a band will be released in due course. We have only just been given permission to host this event and are working as fast as we can to get things organised. Thank you for your patience. Our main focus this year will be the parade where we can all remember our past, celebrate our present and embrace our future. However, we are working with our partners to secure a fun-filled afternoon/ evening for you all. However, it’s important to note that venues will have a limited capacity due to the current COVID regulations. It is therefore possible you will also need your wristbands to enter other venues. The team is already working on bringing you Grampian Pride 2022 in May next year, so keep your eyes peeled for updates. Register online now!
