City’s emergency heroes join forces for charity football tournament
Aberdeen’s emergency services are set to go head-to-head, or foot-tofoot, when they take part in The Archie Foundation’s annual Battle of the Badges football tournament on Saturday 10th June.

he event, hosted at Cove Rangers, Balmoral Stadium, is back bigger and better for its fifth year, doubling the number of services taking part to include the Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) and NHS who will play against colleagues in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland. The special tournament will see each football player teamed up with a child mascot who has a connection to Archie. In the run up to the event, they will work together to raise funds for the charity which supports sick babies, children and bereaved families across the north and northeast of Scotland. Regional Fundraising Manager for The Archie Foundation, Cassie McGunnigle, said: “We are really excited to be bringing the addition of NHS and Scottish Ambulance service teams to Battle of the Badges this year, with team Police and team Fire, it’s set to be a great tournament.” The Archie Foundation, based at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital (RACH), funds specialist roles within the hospital, equipment, and projects, as well as providing temporary on-site accommodation and financial support to families. Archie also supports babies and families requiring neonatal services, as well as bereaved children who have lost a loved one. Team NHS captain, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon Mike Reidy, said: “When Archie approached us to bring a team together for this fantastic event, we jumped at the chance. We see first-hand the

difference the charity makes every day to Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital, and we are excited to get matched with our mascots and get fundraising!” The day will feature four games lasting 30 minutes each, along with fun games and activities for the mascots and their families throughout the day. Team Police Captain, Detective Constable Kevin Lynch, said: “Battle of the Badges is such a feel-good event, we are delighted to be taking part again this year. With the
addition of SAS and NHS, it’s going to be a great day for everyone. This event is much more than just a football tournament. The Archie mascots and their families are so resilient and strong, after everything they have been through, they are inspirations and really give us a reason to raise as much money as we can for The Archie Foundation.” With the announcement of the event expansion, The Archie Foundation is set to kick off its search for mascots in the coming months.

Learning and wellbeing charity offers free “Wonderboxes” for young people across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Curiosity Collective is encouraging new partners to get in touch. 2020 so that it helps all undersupported children and the charity is now distributing the fourth edition.
C
uriosity Collective, the learning and wellbeing charity, is actively encouraging new Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshirebased third sector partners to get in touch. The charity is offering hundreds of their successful ‘Wonderbox’ resources to groups that reach under-supported children across the North East. Originally established in 2013 as ‘Children’s University Scotland’, the charity rebranded as ‘Curiosity Collective’ in 2021 to increase its appeal to all ages. With a vision to ensure all children in Scotland are given the freedom to explore and enjoy learning outwith school, Curiosity Collective creates and distributes free and accessible resources designed to improve children’s skills, confidence and wellbeing. The charity has reached over 15,000 under-supported children across Scotland to date. Curiosity Collective created the
“Wonderbox” resource at the start of the pandemic to provide vital resources to inspire and enable under-supported children to learn and keep mentally well through the height of the restrictions. The resource has been hugely successful and is now an integral part of the charity’s long-term offering. The “Wonderbox” is something that young people cherish; it contains everything a young person needs to take part in fun and interesting activities at home without the requirement for any additional resource. Over 8,000 children have benefitted from the “Wonderbox” to date and 95% of survey respondents say it helped them to feel less isolated and stressed. The charity works with partners and stakeholders operating on a national level such as One Parent Families Scotland, the Fostering Network and Women’s Aid to distribute the resource effectively. ‘Wonderbox’ has been carefully developed since

2022: Another year of success for Denis Law Legacy Trust Last year saw Denis Law Legacy Trust reach new heights with a range of impactful operations, successful fundraising events and record-breaking volunteering milestones.
T
he Trust’s flagship programme Streetsport, which is run in partnership with
Robert Gordon University, saw just under 15,500 total participations in sessions which are delivered directly into communities across Aberdeen. 2022 also proved, once again, the dedication and commitment of Streetsport volunteers with the highest instances and total hours of volunteering ever recorded. The Trust has developed a strong volunteer platform that enables
and recognises personal development as seen with Streetsport volunteer Dave Thompson who was shortlisted for BBC Sports Personality Of The Year: Unsung Hero 2022 for his work volunteering with the programme. Denis Law Legacy Trust also officially became a certified Carbon Neutral Charity from Carbon Neutral Britain. The process began when Granite City Speaks, a local youth forum launched by Denis Law Legacy Trust earlier this year, wanted to
see more done to combat the negative impact of climate change. Last year, Denis Law Legacy Trust grew from a small to a medium sized charity thanks to a range of successful partnerships, fundraising applications and activities. The Trust had its first ever Golf outing, sponsored by CNR International. Deeside Golf Club hosted the event which raised a fantastic amount for the charity. The popular event will return on 3rd August later this year.

Techfest marks International Day of Women and Girls in Science Local pupils to learn more about future careers in physics.
T
echFest, in partnership with St Margaret’s School for Girls in Aberdeen, marked the International Day of Women and Girls in Science today with a series of physics workshops. Around 130 pupils from primary schools in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire joined students from St Margaret’s, Scotland’s oldest all girls’ school, at the event. The day was supported by Apache Corporation, whose team welcomed the young people to their premises in Kingswells, and was designed to help the pupils learn more about career options in the field of physics. The event gave pupils in P6 and P7 the chance to take part in hands on learning experiences themed around physics, which included workshops delivered by TechFest staff sponsored by bp and Shell, TAQA, Equinor, Apollo, and OPITO as part of its My Energy Future (MEF) programme. The workshops included Isaac's Big Idea, which tells the story of Isaac Newton and how forces interact with objects, an Apollo 7 Challenge, which sees pupils working as a team to apply physics and engineering principles to bring an astronaut safely back to Earth and Measuring the Gravitational Force Field, which teaches the young people about the force of gravity. A recent report prepared on behalf of Education Scotland, which looked at structural barriers to STEM
engagement, found there is a clear demand for more engaging and more relevant STEM teaching among learners. This is a particular issue for pupils from S1-3, which is when their perceptions of STEM and decisions on whether to continue STEM subject studies come to the fore. The reports notes there is a real need to ensure that STEM education being provided in schools is rooted in the real world. The workshops will give them a real opportunity to find out how the STEM subjects relate to the world of work, giving them an insight into possible future careers. Sarah Chew, managing director of TechFest, said: “We had a fantastic morning running these interactive and engaging workshops, which we hope will inspire the pupils to
consider a career in STEM and particularly physics. “This is an ideal way to celebrate International Day of Women and Girls in Science, which is an annual day adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote the full and equal access and participation of females in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths.” TechFest is an Aberdeen-based charity which aims to engage young people in the four main STEM subjects (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) and encourage them to go on to follow a career which utilises these skills by demonstrating that they are both fun and relevant in day-to-day life. Befriend a Child has the golden ticket to the most wonderful black-tie event in Aberdeen Local children’s charity, Befriend a Child, has announced the return of their annual Big Kids Ball for 2023, and revealed that guests will enjoy a Willy Wonka-themed evening.

in a world of pure imagination at iconic Aberdeen venue, The Chester Hotel. Attendees will be welcomed by Befriend a Child to the wonders of Wonkaland, enjoying a scrumdiddlyumptious three-course dinner, entertainment, and dancing. There will be a few fun surprises at the event and musicmakers, Glitz will keep the party going late into the night! The charity, which provides befriending and mentoring programmes, group activities and family support for disadvantaged children, recently confirmed that Civil Engineering Contractors, W
M Donald, will be headline sponsor of the Ball for the second year running. Elaine Donald, Director at W M Donald, says of the event, “We are delighted to be Headline Sponsor for the second year running at Befriend a Child’s Charity Ball. We look forward to being part of the Golden Ticket Ball to raise awareness of what Befriend a Child does for disadvantaged children & young people in our community. The aim of the evening is also to raise as much money as possible to help these children in whatever way we can.” Tickets are on sale for £100 per person, or £1000 for a table of 10, with all proceeds going towards Befriend a Child’s vital support services in Aberdeen City and Shire.
Every year, the charity helps over 250 children and young people, aged 5-16, who are navigating difficult life circumstances, including poverty, abuse and neglect, and poor mental health. They match children with volunteer befrienders and mentors, who meet with the young person on a regular basis and provide support, stability, and fun. Befriend a Child also run Youth Clubs in regeneration areas and, more recently, launched a Family Support service, providing support and delivering packages with essential items to struggling families. Cost-of-living crisis means thousands of children in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire without basic essentials, says Aberdeen charity
A
berNecessities, which provides basic essentials to families in Aberdeen and
Aberdeenshire who are experiencing severe financial difficulties, received an enormous surge in requests for help at the end of 2022, and that demand has continued into 2023. This year, the charity expects see an increase of at least 25% on 2022, as thousands of families in the region struggle to pay rising bills and care for their children. The charity, which was formed in 2019, provided 2,704 Christmas packages to children who were facing a Christmas with no gifts from Father Christmas,
representing a 100% rise on 2021. During December, the charity discovered that many families asking for support at Christmas were unable to feed, clothe and bathe their children, as the costof-living crisis began to dig deeper. The team at AberNecessities, which is based in Dyce, was able to deliver personalised festive packages including gifts and clothing, and in January began to give ongoing support to those families in severe need, providing baby milk, essential clothing, cleaning supplies, school items and more. Founder Danielle Flecher-Horn said the task in the first quarter is
no less pressing than over the busy festive period. “Just when we thought we were on top of the Christmas requests, the number of families needing essential items for their children continued to go through the roof. Our volunteers and our team worked flat out in November and December - and they continue to do so. We aimed to provide 2,500 Christmas packages but supplied over 200 more than that. Every day we heard heart-breaking stories from mothers and fathers in tears telling us that they could not provide for their children, and so we did our very best to accommodate as many as was physically possible.

Warm housing is not a privilege it is a fundamental human right.” As the charity continues to provide baby items and clothing for children, it is urging local businesses and the local community to bring their festive spirit into 2023. Danielle said: “We were once again astonished by the support given to us by businesses large and small, as well as individuals who contributed gifts and monetary donations to help make Christmas magic. However, now we face a

year where the pressures are unimaginable. North East organisations invited to raise a cuppa (& cake!) in celebration of VSA’s 153rd birthday A local charity is asking organisations across the North East to grab a cuppa and cake to toast its 153rd birthday.

SA, the social care charity supporting the people of Aberdeen & north-east Scotland, is asking businesses to get together throughout the month of March for its official ‘Birthday Tea Party’. Holly Leiper, Head of Communications and Fundraising for VSA, says, “We are excited that our popular tea party launches next month on Friday, March 10th - the official birthday of VSA. This year will be our 153rd in which we have provided the best of care to the city of Aberdeen and the North East, changing so many lives of vulnerable children and adults." Holly continues, “We are asking businesses big and small to stop for a moment, get together and grab some cake and a cuppa to help us celebrate. It’s so easy to be part of

King's Church Aberdeen harnesses the power of volunteering to stage a family fun day for displaced Ukrainians now living in the Granite City Words by Lindsay Bruce
More than 60 volunteers from Kings Church, based in the former Exhibition Centre building, contacted Ukrainian families in Aberdeen and the Shire, most of whom were still in temporary hotel accommodation. A special invitation was issued and much to the delight of the volunteer team, more than 120 adults and 80 children attended. The guests were able to enjoy inflatables, face painting, games, a nail bar and ‘colouring in’ station, in a room adorned with balloons, decorated in the traditional blue and yellow of Ukraine. A three course meal of traditional Ukrainian food was served and afterwards visitors were invited to choose items to take home from a pop-up store, comprising more than 100 bags of high quality, pre-loved toys, books and clothing. As each family left children were also given an Easter Egg. Ps Iain Duthie of King’s Church said: “It’s our privilege as a church community to have the people - and the facilities - to stage an event such as this one.

“Extending a hand of friendship and offering support to those who need it.... is what we believe we are called to do. We had a team of professional chefs prepare and serve the meal and had multiple volunteers playing games and looking after children. “Having organised and delivered a similar event for our city's Afghan refugees in 2022, it was a privilege to show the wonderful Ukrainian men, women and children now residing in Scotland, how loved and valued they really are. New opportunities are available all the time and several events and throughout the year highlight achievements and provide ways to bring people together to celebrate our communities and the volunteers that make them so special. Some highlights happening soon include... The Big Help Out The Big Help Out aims to showcase how volunteering benefits both communities and the people who take part. Inspired by HM King Charles III’s life of dedicated service The Big Help Out will encourage people to try volunteering for themselves, while celebrating those who already volunteer on Monday 8th May, the bank holiday of the coronation weekend of King Charles III. Voluntary groups in Aberdeen and across the country can take part in this exciting and historic opportunity by registering any volunteering opportunities, events etc. that they have at thebighelpout.org.uk
In addition, the National Lottery Community Fund have launched a Coronation Fund to support people and communities to take part in the coronation celebrations and events in their community. tudents continue to provide tremendous support to volunteering and the community.
ACVO were therefore delighted to host an information stall at the brilliant University of Aberdeen Psychology Networking Event where we shared the fantastic opportunities there are for students to volunteer, make a real difference and gain important recognition through awards such as the Saltire Awards. It also presented the opportunity to highlight how volunteering can assist/complement studies and provide good, positive experience linked to courses and student’s future career aspirations. ACVO look forward to continuing our great links with the University of Aberdeen/Aberdeen University Students’ Association, RGU/RGU: Union and the North East Scotland College/NESCol Students Association and Scotland's Rural College. This equipment does not replace family or other carers who may visit, but it does reassure them that an easy call for help can be made when required.
Scottish Government National Care Service Survey closing soon Researchers with the Scottish Government working on the National Care Service (NCS) invite participants with lived experience to take place in their survey before it closes on Monday March 6th.
Monitoring of the equipment can be by a family member/in house carer through a pager that would alert them or a 24 hour manned monitoring centre which will alert a chosen personal responders to any telecare calls raised through the community alarm. The team at Bon Accord Care are happy to attend any community groups and speak about the service, discuss what is available and demonstrate the equipment. We are also willing to be part of any open day/drop in sessions. If you are interested in having them

We want to make sure that birth parents in Grampian are getting the best support possible and in order to do this we need to hear from parents with real life experience.

It works with all kinds of organisations to support shifts in policy, practice and culture so Scotland can #KeepThePromise it made to care experienced infants, children, young people, adults and their families - that every child grows up loved, safe and respected, able to realise their full potential. The Birth Parents Project has been set up in line with The Promise to ensure that the lived experiences of Birth parents is captured and used to inform future service delivery.

We will contact you to discuss whether you want to talk in person, by phone or online. You are welcome to take someone with you. If enough birth parents come forward we can offer focus groups where parents can share experiences together in a safe space.

Tesco Community Grants Tesco Tesco Community Grants fund thousands of local community projects across the UK, helping to fight holiday hunger, tackle mental health, support young people, host community events and much more. Community groups, schools, charities, local authorities and not for profits can all apply for grants for projects that bring benefit for the community. Three projects in 575 local communities are voted on by customers in Tesco stores throughout the UK, with projects changing every three months. Fund award size: maximum £1,500 Notes on award amounts: Tesco can fund 100% of your project costs so you do not have to have any match funding. Following the vote, the project that receives the most votes in its area will receive a grant of up to £1,500. Second place will receive up to £1,000 and third place will receive up to £500. Your will be awarded the amount that you requested, not the maximum amount available to that place. The Rowett Institute are evaluating the potential of a new barley to reduce blood glucose and support people at risk of or living with type 2 diabetes. They are recruiting healthy men and women aged 18+ to take part in this study. If eligible after screening, you will be asked to consume wheat and barley breads on three visits to the Rowett Institute. Volunteer parking is available for participant use while in the Rowett. What is the purpose of this study? There is lots of scientific evidence that eating wholegrain cereals such as barley can protect against disorders such as type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease. This may be due to a carbohydrate called betaglucan, which has been shown to lower cholesterol. In this study we will look to see if a specifically bred barley, rich in beta-glucan and compounds called phytochemicals (“phyto” means “plant”), can also reduce glucose in your blood, which is another risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The barley cereal we are studying may also be beneficial to the environment compared to other cereals grown in Scotland.

This evidence-based session is aimed at front line staff and those in the community who have an interest in domestic abuse. Learning outcomes: – Reframe domestic abuse as a course of coercive and controlling conduct which produces compliance in the victimised partner through fear and the creation of a sense of entrapment – Understand the main issues of providing a sensitive and appropriate service to women, children and young people experiencing domestic abuse This training is delivered by Grampian Women's Aid who work to offer a free, confidential and non-judgemental, specialist service to women, children and young people in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire who have experienced domestic abuse as well as raising awareness through campaigning and professional training.
Old Torry Community Centre are working in partnership with Football Memories Scotland, Alzheimer Scotland, Aberdeen FC Community Trust and Aberdeen FC Heritage Trust to deliver a football memories programme for the residents of Torry and surrounding areas. These free sessions are open to all, especially older people and those of all ages affected by dementia, social isolation, loneliness, mental health issues and other conditions. We will share stories and memories of football (no matter what your team is!) and often the conversation will go in other directions such as local and social history – shops, transport, cinemas, places of work, schools, holidays, entertainment and much more. Money Guiders network: Responses to the cost-of-living crisis
The Mental Health Learning Disability Public Empowerment Group is full of enthusiastic people from a range of backgrounds and sectors across Grampian who are supportive of each other and promote a culture of equality and inclusion. We aim to work in a co-productive way and place lived experience at the heart of what we do. The group exists to influence changes within Mental Health and Learning Disability Services. Meetings are a great way to be a part of change, learn more about what’s happening Grampianwide, and network. This event will be online and in-person and in partnership with Healthy Minds at Rosemount Community Centre, Belgrave Terrace, Aberdeen. Meeting 10am11.30am (online and in person) followed by a chance to find out more about the group and Healthy Minds, have some refreshments, information sharing, a chance to relax, meet people, chat and have some creative fun in Rosemount.
In this session Sustrans Scotland discuss some of the little considered impacts of a car dependent society, and how this can affect our communities. We’ll be taking a look at how cars impact on community life. We provide examples of how private vehicles impact on social connections, perceptions of safety, health and how children and young people move around their local areas. There will be plenty of opportunity for discussion around these issues – and for you to think about how some of these issues might impact your own local community, or the communities you work in. Please let us know if you have any accessibility requirements and we will do our best to accommodate these before, during and after the session. The session will be held on Microsoft Teams. A link will be sent to you by email in advance of the session.
This Money Guiders Scotland network event presents an opportunity to hear in-person from a mix of speakers from the north-east of Scotland and beyond. It will cover a range of initiatives and services that are being delivered by local government, a housing association and an energy advice organisation both locally and nationally, as well as a national unit. Come along to meet our speakers, other participants to discover how a range of organisations have responded, reacted or changed what they do – from the pandemic to the cost-of-living crisis, and join us for lunch afterwards. Our Employability Team provides learning, education, training and employability support to assist clients into Education, Training and Employment. Our employability programmes are tailored to an individual’s needs, barriers and goals to ensure a personalised approach to each individual, every time. Part of our role is to provide opportunities for our clients to gain Work Experience as this is critical for those considering entering a new sector of employment or have been unemployed long term. Everyone can feel lonely and isolated at times, especially if experiencing hardship. In April 2021, in response to the devastating effects of loneliness and isolation on people's mental health and wellbeing, that the pandemic only exacerbated, TLC responded by working with their partners across the city to set up a befriending service to combat the effects of loneliness and isolation in Aberdeen. The service aims to place expertly trained and compassionate volunteers with individuals referred, not only to offer friendship, but also support to build their resilience, giving confidence to enter back into their community, bringing joy and life back into their experiences. The Befriending Coordinator is accountable for part of the operational management of the project, as assigned by the Senior Coordinator. Key roles include working alongside the senior coordinator in managing the referral process, the monitoring and reviewing of befriending placements, volunteer recruitment and training.

In partnership with King’s Church, this work will facilitate community based women and family support within locations across Aberdeen, with a specific focus on Torry. We are looking for a candidate who will ensure good practice, robust monitoring, evaluation and increased partnership working with churches and other organisations around Aberdeen. It is essential that you have experience in facilitating, planning and working with vulnerable people in a community setting. If the successful candidate were to have an existing SVQ3 in Social Care or equivalent, they can expect a starting salary of £9,822 pa. As Bethany is a Christian organisation this post carries an Occupational Requirement in line with Equality Act 2010.
