ackie Dunbar MSP for Aberdeen Donside last week lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament to acknowledge the dedication shown by volunteers ahead of Volunteers Week 2021. The motion also made special reference to ACVO Volunteer Co-ordinator, Mike Melvin, a testament to his enthusiasm and dedication shown toward the volunteer sector in the city.

The motion lodged Thursday, May 27, 2021 stated: “That the Parliament notes that Volunteers’ Week 2021 will take place from 1 to 7 June 2021; recognises the tremendous efforts of all of those who have volunteered to deliver services and support to others, especially over the past 12 months, on the 37th annual Volunteers’ Week; acknowledges the impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had in preventing people who would usually volunteer from doing so for a number of reasons, and commends the work of Mike Melvin, coordinator at ACVO Third Sector Interface, for championing the third sector in Aberdeen and doing so much to encourage others to volunteer.”

Improvement and Engagement Co-ordinator Technology Enabled Care (TEC) Pathfinder Project The TEC Pathfinder project instigated by the Scottish Government, has now successfully completed its first two phases, completing research on both stakeholders and service users’ views within Aberdeen city. It has been looking at the delivery of multi-agency services involved in reducing the impact of domestic abuse on those in recovery.

The next challenge is to explore how ‘technology enable care’ (TEC) can play its role in supporting whole system frameworks of support, including getting to know and implementing the Scottish Approach to Service Design (SAtSD).

This is an exciting opportunity to bring multi-disciplinary teams together to decide ways forward. It will involve working with an experienced digital team to test out solutions and share understanding that will improve life outcomes for those who have experienced domestic abuse. You will need to be interested in prevention, be person-centred and committed to improvement from a ‘whole systems’ point view, bringing organisations and multi-disciplinary groups together in ways to support each other and the clients they serve.

Home-Start Aberdeen charity shop appeal for donations Corra Foundation

local Aberdeen charity shop run by Home-Start Aberdeen is urgently appealing for donations of children’s clothing, shoes, toys and books.

The shop, which has been reopened for three weeks now, has been busier than ever and requires further donations of good quality, affordable items that are in increasing demand.

Eleanor McEwan, general manager said: “If you’re planning a clear-out or a spring clean, please don’t throw your unwanted items away – consider donating it to us.

Right now we urgently need children’s clothing, shoes, toys and books. All profits made by the shop are used to support our work with young children and their families in Aberdeen.”

All donations can be dropped off at the Home-Start shop on George Street (opposite John Lewis building) - Monday to Saturday (except Thursdays) from 10am until 4pm.

For over 30 years the charity has been supporting vulnerable families across the city to prevent family crisis and breakdown. This support is usually provided via a home-visiting service where carefully selected and trained volunteers are there for families, visiting them in their own homes with compassionate, confidential help. COVID-19 has meant that the charity has had to adapt how it delivers its services to families, continuing to support over 160 families remotely since the start of the pandemic. These young families have at least one child under the age of five and are typically affected by social isolation, bereavement, relationship problems, illness, disability and financial hardship.

Express Don’t Stigmatise Calling All Creatives – enter DRiNKLiNK's art competition to help raise awareness around the stigma of alcohol dependency and misuse!

This year DRiNKLiNK is focusing on the theme ‘stigma’, and to help raise awareness around the issue they are hosting a Stigma Art Competition – #ExpressDontStigmatise They have been inspired by the Canadian street artist, Richard Hambleton’s life story. For years he suffered from alcohol and drug dependency but still created sought-after artwork that continues to sell for hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Some of the terms associated with alcoholism aren’t too complimentary – like loser, thief, jaikie, lowlife, scrounger, tramp, liar.

It can be a lot to take if you are the loved one of someone with an alcohol dependency. Families and friends often struggle when it comes to the stigma associated with alcoholism and a lot of this stigma stem from misunderstandings around, and perceptions of, the term alcoholic.

Alcohol dependency is long associated with mental health, however, someone branding themselves as having an alcohol problem will receive a very different response to someone saying they have a mental health problem.

University of Aberdeen launch two new programmes to grow internship and volunteering opportunities for students

THE CONS, THE PROS AND THE HARD FACTS. IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2021/2022 ALONE, POLICE SCOTLAND NORTH EAST DIVISION, HAVE SEEN A 220% INCREASE IN FRAUDS BEING REPORTED. BUT WHAT CAN WE DO TO COMBAT THIS? TRUTH: If you’ ve fallen for it, there are always others. Every complaint we get about fraud, helps the Police to gather information.

Every piece of information adds a piece to the puzzle to help us investigate these crimes.

UPCOMING INSTALLMENTS Looking ahead we will take a look into examples of actual frauds that have been reported in the North East of Scotland.

These include: Cryptocurrency/Investment frauds Safe account/bank transfer frauds Email interception frauds Online extortion/Dating frauds Cold call frauds And more.

Until then, avoid becoming a victim of frauds by remembering: 1 – If its sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

They support those living with dementia and their carers and offer a safe, welcoming and non-judgmental environment, providing an opportunity to come and socialise with others in a similar situation.

Every single one of our volunteers is valued by us, whether they prefer to remain in the background and are beavering away behind the scenes, or if they have a more visible role engaging with café users.Each person has a different skill set and brings different talents to enhance the effectiveness of the support we provide at the cafés. Each one of them has a vital input into the successful running of each and every café and we have built up good relationships with them.

I feel that as part of a team and with one mind, we try to give all our café friends and their carers a few lighthearted and enjoyable hours each time.It is so heartwarming to see faces light up, memories rekindled and their voices lift in song and, with encouragement, to get up and dance.

Our future is uncertain because our core funding has been withdrawn.....

Our management team is actively looking to secure alternative sources of funding. We are passionate about wanting the cafés to reopen and feel there is a real need to provide this facility in local communities. All avenues of funding are explored and we are also organising our own fundraiser on Saturday 5 June when we will climb Brimmond Hill from 7 am till 7 pm. We hope the sun will shine for us that day and shine a light on the importance of the cafés for so many vulnerable people.

FRESH Community Wellness thanks volunteers

FRESH is an outreach service, providing opportunities to socialise and exercise for individuals who are struggling with social isolation, homelessness, drug dependency, and/or other issues.

by Patrick Goldie, FRESH Community Wellness Aberdeen is celebrating the 37th annual Volunteers Week.Taking place from 1st to 7th June 2021 the event marks all of the hard work done by those who have dedicated their free time and expertise to helping others. Recent estimates from ACVO suggest that there some 70,500 volunteers in the city alone!

One of the newest entrants to this thriving local scene is FRESH Community Wellness.

FRESH is an outreach service, providing opportunities to socialise and exercise for

checks around the city centre, to the establishment of “Wellness Walks”, litter picks, befriending calls, and other regularly scheduled activities.

None of the work accomplished thus far would have been possible without the efforts of our small but enthusiastic band of volunteers. FRESH Community Wellness would thus like to take this opportunity to give a massive thank-you to everyone who has played a part so far.
