he charity, which provides day and residential support to over 95 children and young people with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs, has submitted plans to Aberdeen City Council to redevelop the Camphill Bookshop at the opening of their Murtle estate near Bieldside on North Deeside Road. Named Murtle Market, it will see the book shop transformed into a ‘zero waste’ organic farm and refilling shop which will also promote the charity’s impressive 80-year history as well as showcasing the range of different crafts made by the young people it supports.

Murtle Market will be a hub for students to further their employability and relationship building skills all whilst promoting the ethos of the school and sustainable living to the wider community.

Alex Busch, Executive Director of Camphill School Aberdeen, said: “We are incredibly proud to be launching Murtle Market. We’ve seen a significant increase in demand for meaningful work experience and skills development for young people with learning disabilities across the North East as well as increasing demands by the local community to shop locally and

The charity has seen a significant increase in demand for its day and residential services in recent years. Nationally, there is a shortage of local and national residential services for young people who need a mix of education, social and provision available for skills development opportunities for 16-25 year olds with complex additional support needs.

In response to the growing need for local support, Camphill School Aberdeen launched a capital appeal campaign at the start of the year to raise £10 million over the next 10 years. The Building Futures, Transforming Lives campaign aims to increase the charity’s capacity by 60%.

The 10-year project will be completed in phases, the first of which is a £3.5 million project to build an 11-bedroom house, with an independent living wing and Murtle Market.

Currently, only 4% of adults with a learning disability in Scotland are in employment, according to the Fraser Allander Institute, University of Strathclyde. This is due to a lack of support to identify work opportunities and a lack of training for young people to

avfram, an international offshore energy contractor, is supporting local charity AberNecessities with an ambitious fundraiser to raise money for Ukrainian refugees being relocated to North-east Scotland.

The Aberdeen to Kyiv virtual walk/run/cycle fundraiser will challenge volunteers to virtually travel the 2,100 miles between the two cities.

Throughout May, volunteers have been asked to walk, run, or cycle enough miles to get from Aberdeen to the Ukrainian capital. This can include everything from dog walks to weekly workouts. Hare Wo Go! Scottish Cancer Charity Launches Second Art Sculpture Trail

Clan Cancer Support, the north-east’s leading cancer support charity, announces that it is has partnered with Wild in Art for a second time to bring an exciting new art trail to the north-east, Moray, Orkney and Shetland.

ollowing on from the success of their Light the North Trail, which raised over £324,000 on auction night alone, 40 hare

The Big Hop Trail will take the public on another cultural tour of the north-east and the islands from July to September in 2023, letting them discover and engage with the area. The trail is

currently the only one of its kind planned for Scotland in 2023. The sculpture trail will also coincide with Clan’s 40th anniversary next year, with 40 sculptures being the focal point to celebrate the charity’s commitment to supporting people affected by cancer, their family, carers and friends.

Volunteers week is the perfect opportunity to take a few moments to thank and encourage all volunteers across the city. Community Councils are active within their local communities making them a better place to live and work. They are involved in a variety of projects including care packages for those in need, festive lights, community gardens, litter picks, community paths, planters/hanging baskets and rarely do they get the thanks or credit for this important work. During the pandemic, community councils joined other volunteers to make sure that fellow residents were safe and had the supplies that they needed. I am always amazed at how much community councils achieve for their communities whether on their own or by working closely with other local groups and agencies.

Greyhope Bay bring volunteers together to look after the coast while improving personal wellbeing with their project

reyhope Bay, a charitable organisation based in Aberdeen, not only offer dolphin watching from their café and community space at Torry Battery, but also provide the opportunity for volunteers to come together to clean the coasts with their ‘Clean Beach Happy People’ project.

Working in partnership with East Grampian Coastal Partnership - Turning the Plastic Tide, members of the public are invited to spend a couple of hours together clearing litter from the coastline that surrounds the Greyhope Bay Centre with a special focus on enjoying the positive effects of time well spent in the great outdoors.

The beach cleaning programme received support from the Scottish Government’s Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund which was distributed in Aberdeen by ACVO. As well as bringing benefit to the natural environment, Turning the Plastic Tide has done extensive evaluations of supported beach cleaning and have concluded that one of the top takeaways from the experience of beach cleaning as a group is a sense of wellbeing and positive mental outlook from purposeful activity and community connection.

As part of our Volunteers’ Week 2022 campaign, the ACVO team joined volunteers and organisers to experience Clean Beach Happy People first hand, to breathe some fresh coastal air and to see the huge positive impact the project is making on the Torry area and on the wellbeing of those who take part. The Greyhope Bay Centre which opened in April 2022 is an "off-grid" ecofacility built by converting shipping containers and forms part of 5-year plan to establish Torry Battery as a vibrant destination in Aberdeen.

Mental Health Awareness Week 9-15 May 2022

M

ental Health Awareness Week this year, focussed on raising awareness of the impact of loneliness on our mental wellbeing and the practical steps we can take to address it.

Loneliness is affecting more and more of us in the UK and has had a huge impact on our physical and mental health during the pandemic.

Our connection to other people and our community is fundamental to protecting our mental health and we need to find better ways of tackling the epidemic of loneliness. We can all play a part in this.

To support the campaign we took a closer look at projects operating in Aberdeen which bring communities together and alleviate the impact of loneliness.

Citymoves Dance Agency

Dance for Parkinson's

Mo's story

C

itymoves Dance Agency is a registered charity who provide dance classes for all ages and abilities. Having suffered an extended time of isolation due to the pandemic, Citymoves sought funding to support their Dance for Parkinson’s programme, to support the social, mental and physical wellbeing of those living with this condition in the city.

Dance for Parkinson’s is a national programme running throughout Scotland, initiated by Scottish Ballet and Dance Base. All tutors receive training specific to working with those living with Parkinson’s.

This year thanks to the Communities Mental Health and Wellbeing Fund, Citymoves were able to not only fund the class in their studio but also an additional class in the community to reach more participants and their carers in Aberdeen.

Parkinson’s can range from a mild to debilitating condition where a reduced level of physical activity can have a significant effect on strength, mobility and posture. Dance for Parkinson’s aims to encourage those living with this condition to gain muscle strength and mobility through the movement of dance. As well as promoting good mental health, participants keep physically active through these classes.

Additionally, and just as importantly, the project acts as a community hub for those living with Parkinson’s. This frequent, weekly socialisation helps alleviate feelings of loneliness and social isolation amongst the dancers. They get to communicate with other like-minded, like-bodied people, find similarities in their situations and seek advice in relation to their condition.

Mo has always loved dancing and has danced all her life. Dance for Parkinson’s classes have brought her closer to others and she finds the classes a good way to meet people, socialise and to feel less isolated.

Mo found the lockdown to be a challenge at times but was grateful when the classes moved online. However she is now glad to be back at Citymoves to see others in person.

Amy's Story

Amy is one of the Dance Development Managers at Citymoves and is the lead tutor for Dance for Parkinson’s. She started as a volunteer for the class around six years ago where she trained alongside other tutors.

She feels the main aim of the group is to let people know they are not alone and provide a space for authentic interpersonal relationships to grow. She notices positive physical and emotional differences in all who take part and loves to be able to make a difference to people’s lives.

Rev James Garnett’s Story

Open House O

pen House is a project which aims to create community by providing a welcoming, inclusive and accessible space for all to attend in the heart of Aberdeen’s City Centre.

Hosted by Aberdeen Methodist Church on Crown Terrace, the programme welcomes attendees every weekday between 2pm and 4pm. They offer refreshments, hot drinks, purposeful activities and, most importantly, a safe and inviting space for anyone who would like to join.

In addition to bringing in people to run workshops and activities, Open House encourage those who attend to take a lead in planning and leading workshops relating to their interests. This contributes towards building individual confidence and fostering involvement within a flourishing community.

Open House stimulates necessary conversation amongst a variety of individuals where the main aim is to prevent and address problems associated with poor mental health and loneliness.

Rev James Garnett is the Minister at Aberdeen Methodist Church.

He was inspired to establish Open House as he is passionate about tackling social isolation within the city and surrounding communities through the process of bringing people together.

As well seeing the sessions as benefit for those who attend, Rev Garnett views Open House as an opportunity for him to learn and connect with others through listening to their stories

Those who attend may have experienced recent challenges with substances or mental health, and a simple chat with someone can make a positive impact on their lives.

Stories can be shared within a calm, warm environment and people can take their mind off any worries for a couple of hours. Everyone is welcome to Open House where there is always someone to talk to.

Open House is supported by the Scottish Government Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund, distributed in Aberdeen by ACVO.

Aberdeen Befriending Project

P

re-pandemic, there were always people in Aberdeen that have struggled with loneliness and isolation, however, due to the pandemic, we have witnessed a huge increase in people struggling with this crippling issue due to the various lockdowns and fear that the pandemic created, causing a loss of confidence and fear in entering and being part of their local community.

For those affected, this has meant a decrease in their community connectedness and resilience, with higher levels of loneliness and Isolation felt which has adversely affected their mental health and wellbeing.

The TLC Aberdeen Befriending Project matches volunteer befrienders with individuals referred via the Primary Links Practitioners, based in doctor’s surgeries across Aberdeen.

The service aims to act as an early intervention to alleviate the feelings of loneliness and isolation, which has adversely affected an individual’s mental health and wellbeing, by supporting and building individuals’ community connectedness and personal resilience, all of which improve individual life outcomes Another project supported by the Scottish Government Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund, distributed in Aberdeen by ACVO.

Jonny is the Development Manager at TLC and has been involved with the work of the organisation over the years, most recently overseeing TLCs befriending project, established in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. He has witnessed first hand the health and wellbeing benefit of bringing people in communities together.

With the Aberdeen Befriending Project, Jonny wants to see the resilience of individuals restored and the people they support feel comfortable to engage fully with their community.

Volunteers at Grampian Opportunities take action Volunteering Action against climate change Plan to launch at The Gathering

The Volunteering Action Plan (VAP) is a collaborative project led by the Scottish Government that aims to create a Scotland where everyone can volunteer, more often, and throughout their lives.

The Plan builds upon Volunteering for All: The National Framework and provides ‘actions on the ground’ achieved through co-production, learning and a spirit of reciprocity and is designed to provide actions over a 10year period as a living plan.

The framework provides a coherent and compelling narrative for volunteering and defines the key outcomes desired for volunteering over the next ten years; and identifies (some of) the key data and evidence to inform, indicate and drive performance.

The formal launch of the action plan will take place at the SCVO Gathering at on Wednesday 15 June 09:30-12:15, all are invited and full details can be found at scvo.scot/the-gathering.

The Gathering, organised by SCVO, is the largest voluntary sector event in the UK and is back and coming to Glasgow's SEC on 15 & 16 June 2022.

It’s free to attend the Gathering as a delegate and everyone’s welcome voluntary sector staff, volunteers, board members and trustees from charities, social enterprises and community groups, politicians, academics and journalists, students and members of the public.

Grampian Opportunities have been successful in receiving funding from the National Lottery for the GO Green Project, which will support communities across the UK to take action on climate change.

GO is lucky enough to have around 85 Volunteers who support the service in various ways. A handful of Volunteers have been kind enough to give up their time to form the GO Green steering group, ultimately the GO Green Project is a Volunteer led Project supported by staff from GO. The main objectives of this project will be to spend the next 12 months monitoring, evaluating and implementing how we can share practical low or no costs options within the organisation and wider community on our journey to net zero.

GO’s aim is to raise awareness and knowledge of current activities and to increase the knowledge and skills of climate change and to encourage positive recycling choices within the service as well as personally at home. Tracey Harrison is Coordinating the GO Green Project and has set up some dates for the GO Green Café meeting and hopes that people can attend as speakers will be invited to these get togethers. Charity Clan Cancer Support to host volunteering open day

N

orth-east cancer charity, Clan Cancer Support is hosting a volunteering open day to attract the

public to sign up and support people affected by cancer across its communities.

The open day will be held at Clan House situated on Westburn Road, Aberdeen on Wednesday 8th June 2022 between 3pm and 8pm, and will give anyone interested in volunteering the opportunity to find out more about the charity, its work across the north-east and Northern Isles as well as how volunteering can make a difference to your local community.

The day will coincide with this year’s Volunteer’s Week in June, and will encourage people to sign up across all aspects of Clan, including volunteering at events and shops, as well as volunteering to assist with listening and support and driving clients to and from their hospital appointments.

Val Lockhart, who has been volunteering within the events team at Clan since 2014 says, “I got involved with Clan in 2014 through the charities’ committee at my work. When I moved on from the job, I stayed with Clan. There are so

many positives for me, the important local services I feel I’m supporting, the lively and kind community I’ve become part of, and the different ways I’ve been able to contribute, depending on work or other personal commitments. I’d say to anyone thinking of volunteering, sign up and see how you like it. The most important thing for me was how welcoming the staff and volunteers are.”

Claire Mechie, Clan’s Volunteer Coordinator, says: “Volunteering is at the very heart of everything that Clan does. We are so proud of our volunteers across our local communities as they provide a variety of important ways to support people that are affected by cancer. NEEDS is looking for volunteer facilitators for their monthly support groups for those who are suffering from an eating disorder, as well as for carers who are supporting someone with an eating disorder, either in person or from a distance (e.g., a family member at university or living elsewhere).

Have you suffered from an eating disorder and been fully recovered for at least 2 years, or have you had experience of caring for a family member or friend who has suffered from an eating disorder and who is now fully recovered or who is still suffering from an eating disorder having had it for several years?

If the answer is yes, are you someone who can and is willing to support others in this journey, who can always observe confidentiality, be empathetic, kind, and non-judgemental, be a good listener, be sensitive to those who are not yet able to share, and who can demonstrate the value of self-care.

Disability Equity Partnership Volunteer Members The Partnership works to raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with disabilities and to break down barriers, overcome challenges and improve quality of life.

The group comprises approximately 15 members of the public, working with five local councillors, and its vision is to: a) To bring about improvements to the lives of people in Aberdeen City who experience exclusion because of disability by promoting a rights-based approach to disability equality. b) To create a society where disabled people are valued, respected and included in the life of the City. c) To encourage and promote inclusion and equality. d) To create fair opportunity by identifying and removing the disabling barriers which disabled people face daily including prejudice, discrimination and negative attitudes. e) To provide a means of partnership, consultation and joint action with Aberdeen City Council Meetings are held at Aberdeen Town House (entrance from Queen Street, Aberdeen). There is also the option to join the meeting remotely if you choose to do so. The Disability Equity Partnership (DEP) has 6 meetings over the year. Examples of projects we have been working on include the City Centre Masterplan, Union Terrace Gardens, webpage and information accessibility to reduce barriers and improve access to information, goods and services.

Playgroup Support Volunteers – Aberdeen North Parish The latest from our team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use current child care and hospitality skills or to develop new ones. The playgroup is well attended and is a wonderful atmosphere. Duties include helping with setting out toys, craft activities, snacks and occasional help with teas and coffees for parents/carers.

There is opportunity to develop skills in leading craft, story time and games if desired. Volunteers would engage with the children during free play, being mindful of health and safety, modelling sharing, praising children’s creative ideas etc.

Volunteers would be warm and welcoming to parents and carers encouraging them to engage in play with their children and stepping in to play while parents/carers have a chance for a cuppa. Duties also include tidying up, cleaning the assigned toy set , and putting away toys and crafts.

Excellent support and guidance is provided to all volunteers. Volunteers will be given an induction into the roles and tasks.

Through an informal chat we will agree the volunteers experience and identify together the needs for support and training or if the candidate is experienced, responsibilities for the person. All requests for training will be discussed and considered. Support will take the form of a team and individual check in before and after each playgroup session.

This is a joyful, fun team who work hard to ensure the children and families have a positive and enjoyable experience while they are with us. You would be a welcome member of our team. This is a term time opportunity on Thursday’s. The group runs from 1pm until 2:30pm. Volunteers are needed from 12:30 until 3pm each week.

Scottish Government Investing in Communities Fund (ICF) open for applications

A

s of Tuesday 31 May 2022 Round 2 of the Investing in Communities Fund has opened for applications and this multi-year fund covers the period from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2026.

The Investing in Communities Fund (ICF) is a streamlined communities fund that is delivered as part of the Empowering Communities Programme. The fund reflects the commitment of the Scottish Government to invest in communities so that they can develop the resources and resilience to decide their own aspirations, priorities and solutions in response.

The fund supports our most disadvantaged or fragile communities to tackle poverty in all its forms on their own terms. The fund also helps to meet targets as set out in the child poverty delivery plan and to underpin the Place Principle by encouraging more joined up collaborative approaches to services and assets to achieve better outcomes for people and communities.

It is sometimes referred to as a Community Alarm Service. The basic service consists of a trigger device, worn around your neck or on your wrist with a button which you can press if you have a fall, feel anxious or need other assistance. New HIV PrEP national resources New Community and launched by NHS Treatment Care (CTAC) Hubs THIV PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) is one of a range of options to prevent the transmission of HIV and can be of benefit to anyone at risk of HIV transmission.

A suite of new and updated HIV PrEP resources have been developed in collaboration with NHS, third sector and academic partners on behalf of the

These resources aim to increase awareness of HIV PrEP and support people considering, or prescribed, HIV PrEP and their sexual partners to have the information and knowledge required to make informed choices about HIV PrEP. The website www.prep.scot brings these resources together and allows anyone thinking about HIV PrEP to easily access the information they need and links people to their nearest sexual health services that provides HIV PrEP. Resources include leaflets, booklets and diagrams which can all be downloaded in accessible PDF form from the website.

New Community Treatment and Care (CTAC) Hubs will be opening for Aberdeen City GP Practice patients from the end of June 2022. The appointment booking line for the hubs will open on Monday 6th June 9am5pm for patient appointments from the 20th June.

Patients from any Aberdeen City practice can attend any Aberdeen City CTAC Hub, or the patient may wish to continue booking in with their GP based CTAC nurse/HCSW, for their CTAC procedures.

CTAC procedures include; phlebotomy, CDM monitoring procedures, blood pressure, height/weight, ear syringing, wound care, stitches/staple removal, PICC line care, diabetic foot screening and urinalysis.
