Under the new process, the public and other key stakeholders will be asked for their views in a two-phase consultation period ahead of final annual budget setting in which they will also be able to gain a better understanding of the financial choices facing the council. Meantime, the latest news is the publication of the Promise Oversight Board’s second report on 22nd June 2023 which sadly is telling us that we are not achieving quite the level of improvement that The Promise Plan 2021-2024 had anticipated. The Promise Oversight Board is an independent group, whose members
are drawing on a variety of experience both working with children and young people and in many cases their own lived experience of the care system. Their role is to keep everyone involved accountable and highlight what is and what is not going well in terms of #keepthepromise. The report also focuses on the following priority areas: Education, Brothers and sisters & Homelessness. Please look out for our new "The Promise" page on our ACVO website coming soon. Funding for green projects in your community! Year 2 of the Just Transition Fund is open in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray! The Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund is back for a second year with £1.5 million of funding available to support green community projects in the Northeast and Moray. Last year The Scottish Government announced the ten-year £500 million Just Transition Capital Fund to support Scotland’s Northeast economy in its Just Transition to net zero. In 2022, £1million was distributed to groups in Aberdeen city, Aberdeenshire and Moray with the public voting on which green community projects they wanted to see funded.

Many fantastic local groups received funding and now 2023 sees a further £1.5 million coming to our Northeast communities for environmentally-friendly green projects – with applications opening on 26th June and a public vote in September. The fund will once again be managed by the three Third Sector Interfaces for the Northeast: ACVO, Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action, and TSiMoray supported by the Northeast Scotland’s Climate Action Network (NESCAN Hub) and Money for Moray. Each area has £500,000 to make available to third sector groups. Grassroots community organisations can apply for up to £50,000 for capital funding for green projects that address climate change and improve sustainability as we work towards net-zero. Once the proposals are in, these projects will then be put to a public vote where voters will decide which projects they believe will offer the greatest contribution towards a carbon-neutral region.

Now’s the chance for even more to put their case forward to the public. Mike Melvin, Volunteering Services Manager at ACVO, presented his top tips for recruiting volunteers, best practice involving volunteers and the latest news on Scotland's Volunteering Action Plan. Claire Shaw, ACVO's Funding Officer, gave her latest updates regarding funding for volunteers in Aberdeen. Aberdeen charity raises £46k at first-ever fundraising dinner Autism & Neurodiversity North Scotland (A-ND), the Aberdeen-based autism support charity, is celebrating the monumental success of its first-ever fundraising golf day and dinner raising a total of £46,000.

‘Think Different Golf Day & Dinner’ provided the platform for the charity to raise vital funds that would allow it to target areas of growth and development. The charity currently offers support to 150 individuals and families and aims to increase this to 500 across the north of Scotland by 2027. The money raised will allow A-ND to raise its profile across the region whilst identifying new opportunities and providing additional support through recruitment drives and forthcoming campaigns. One of its major projects, ‘Binky the Sensory Bus’ was on display to guests at the event, offering an exclusive first-hand look at what vital fundraising will support. The double-decker bus, donated by partners at Stagecoach Bluebird and fitted out with sensory equipment provided by manufacturing partner SpaceKraft. The project will see AND deliver its outreach services to autistic and neurodivergent individuals and their families

Four Pillars wins Charity of the Year at Proud Scotland Awards The Aberdeen-based LGBT+ support charity had a successful evening at the annual awards in Glasgow.
J
ust one week after delivering the biggest Grampian pride event so far, which saw record crowds of over 8,500 people celebrate with a parade on Union Street and at the Pride Village in Duthie Park, Four Pillars SCIO, Aberdeen-based LGBT+ support charity, Trustees, staff and volunteers got their glad rags on and travelled to Glasgow to attend the 2023 Proud Scotland awards. The annual event celebrates the LGBT+ community by recognising the outstanding work and commitment of individuals and organisations within and supportive of the community. Now in its 5th year the awards honours and
encourages all across Scotland who stand up for diversity, equality and inclusion. Four Pillars were represented in two categories: the charity was in the final for the best Charity/Group Initiative Award and charity founder and C.E.O. Deejay Bullock was one of six finalists in the community champion category. The team of Trustees and staff who attended the awards were honoured and overjoyed when Four Pillars were announced as the winners of the award for charity/group initiatives. Although due to the excitement and enthusiasm of the presenter of the category, the actual award was knocked off the podium and the sound of the
smashing glass was heard around the room before the winner was announced - this did not dampen the joy of the Four Pillars team. Thankfully a replacement award will be with the charity soon and will be put on display in their community hub at 33 Regent Quay Aberdeen. Aberdeen Science Centre hits the road with support from the Just Transition PB Fund The North East STEM charity aims to accelerate the climate conversation in the region with new electric vehicle complete with interactive exhibition

TEM education is to take to the road at Aberdeen Science Centre, which has recently taken delivery of an electric vehicle thanks to £39,500 funding from the Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund. The vehicle, which will house an interactive climate change exhibit, will help the STEM charity to expand its reach across the country. The branded van will be used to take the climate conversation on the road. It will provide the perfect vehicle to explain climate change and will also include graphics to explain the benefits of switching to an electric vehicle and the resulting reduction in the STEM charity’s carbon footprint. Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre said: “It is incredibly important that we continue the conversation around climate change. It is something that we are already seeing the impact of and that will affect every one of us. "The funding we received from the Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund has allowed us to buy an electric van. This is the next stage in our journey to continue the climate conversation. Having the electric van will allow us to take the conversation on the road, and into the local community. “Over the coming weeks and months, we will be visiting schools and businesses and attending public events in the van. We’ll deliver a range of hands-on activities and inspiring workshops to show people how climate change might affect them and how we can work together to tackle it. “Essentially the van gives us another way to interact with people and help them to find ways to create a stronger, healthier and more
sustainable life for them and their communities.” The Aberdeen Science Centre van has already been in action at the Aberdeen Highland Games, the European Pipe Band Championships and will soon be visiting the Stonehaven Open Air Pool on Sunday 16th July and Duthie Park's Environment Day on Sunday 30th July. Aberdeen Science Centre was one of 13 Aberdeen projects to be awarded funding by the Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund. Managed by ACVO and NESCAN, Scottish Government’s Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund was an opportunity for residents of Aberdeen to have their say about how the North-east of Scotland transitions to Net Zero. Maggie Hepburn, chief executive at ACVO said: “ACVO were delighted to partner with Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action and NESCAN Hub to deliver the first year of The Scottish Government’s Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund in the North East of Scotland. “A key element of the fund is that it aims to empower local people by allowing them a say in how the region’s journey to net zero is shaped. Money was awarded to
projects following a public vote and we were really impressed by the level of engagement and interest shown by Aberdeen residents during this process. It’s fantastic to see the impact these projects are having in our local communities. “Year 2 of the fund is open as of Monday 26th June and the ACVO team look forward to receiving more applications for innovative ecofriendly projects from organisations in Aberdeen.” Bryan added: “As part of the funding process the local community was asked to vote for their preferred projects. We were delighted to receive the second highest number of votes. This shows that there is a real appetite for the public to get involved with the climate conversation and we look forward to inspiring people to make changes to tackle climate change.” Based on Constitution Street near Aberdeen beach, Aberdeen Science Centre is home to almost 65 interactive exhibits, allowing people of all ages to discover topics including Space, Energy, Life Sciences, Engineering, and more. Aberdeen Mela 2023: A Fusion of Cultures The annual celebration of cultural diversity returns on Sunday 27th August 2023.

he event has featured in Aberdeen's cultural calendar for several years with its biggest
comeback in 2022 attracting over 13,000 attendees. It is now a major attraction for people from different parts of Scotland and beyond. Mela is a celebration of the rich cultural diversity within Aberdeen and North East Scotland. The event showcases the various cultures, languages, and traditions of people living in the region, aiming to bring people from different backgrounds together, and encouraging the sharing of knowledge, experiences, and traditions.

Uncover the Earth’s secrets at Aberdeen Science Centre this summer Aberdeen Science Centre will be stepping back in time this summer, with the STEM charity aiming to show that anything is ‘fossible’ as it encourages visitors to find out more about how the world around them was formed.
T
hroughout July and August, visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre will be encouraged to see just why geology rocks through workshops and demonstrations, which will uncover how different rock types are formed as well as explaining how to identify different rock specimens. Visitors will also have the chance to dig for fossils. Lynda McConnach, public and digital coordinator of Aberdeen Science Centre said: “Studying geology is an opportunity to step back in time. Looking at how the earth was formed and examining rocks and fossils
provides a fascinating insight into the Earth’s past. “It’s a chance to understand the processes which have shaped our planet over millions and millions of years. We are excited to bring the past to life this summer. “We’ve got an exciting range of demonstrations and hands-on activities planned that will let visitors, young and old, get to grips with geology.” The centre’s popular Science on the Spot segment is getting a boulder look for summer, transforming to Fossils on the Spot. Lynda added: “Our talented
STEM communicators will reenact the formation of fossils and give visitors to the centre a chance to handle genuine fossils. We’ll also be looking at what happened to the dinosaurs, considering what happened to cause them to become extinct. “We haven’t forgotten our younger visitors either. Last Thursday (June 28th), ACVO was lucky enough to be invited along to shmu’s monthly wellbeing walk. Taking advantage of the blue skies, warm day and cool North Sea breeze, the walk took in the sights of Greyhope Bay, providing the chance to get together, chat and enjoy the natural landscape our city has to offer. shmu’s Wellbeing Walks have community at their core; they focus on bringing people together for the opportunity to socialise while enjoying the benefits of exercise and the outdoors. The initiative ties in with their Wellbeing Café which was supported in part by The Scottish Government’s Communities Mental Health & Wellbeing Fund which was distributed in Aberdeen by ACVO. “I come along to the wellbeing walks because it give’s me the opportunity to discover new parts of Aberdeen” said walk participant, Jo. “I find for me too that getting outside and having the chance to speak to people really lifts my mood. I think the experience is really positive”.
Another walk participant, Sadiqul, agrees. “I think it really gives me the opportunity to clear my head. Being outdoors, talking with people, socialising; it gives me something to look forward to and I find the group really friendly and welcoming.” As well as some dolphin spotting, another highlight of the afternoon was coffee at the Greyhope Bay visitor centre which provides amazing views across the north sea, Aberdeen and up the North East coast. shmu’s Wellbeing Walks take place the last Thursday of every month with the group meeting at 12:45 for an hour’s walk between 1-2pm.

For Volunteers' Week 2023, the ACVO Team visited Aberdeen Cyrenians' distribution warehouse to meet four Aberdeen residents who regularly give their time by volunteering with the organisation. Aberdeen Cyrenians work continuously to shift perceptions and change the outlook on homelessness and vulnerability in society. The reality often differs drastically from the ‘labels’ that people use when thinking of those who need support. Not accepting the current perception of homelessness is something that underpins Aberdeen Cyrenians’ work and how they communicate. Their approach puts the reality of these situations front and centre.
“Our pool of dedicated volunteers supports us to carry out vital activities such as delivering food parcels, sorting donations, supporting activities for service users, and helping the charity behind the scenes. These are all essential in keeping Aberdeen Cyrenians running, reaching those in need promptly and aiding our specialised staff to focus on 1-1 support.
When reflecting on the importance of volunteers within the organisation, Ron Strachan, Volunteering Coordinator with Aberdeen Cyrenians said,
“Every day we are fortunate to encounter amazing individuals and organisations who support people who are experiencing challenges in their lives and require a helping hand or a friendly ear.”

The Charter sets out 10 key principles which help to underpin good relations within a volunteering environment. It is open to any individual, group or
organisation from any sector who either involve volunteers, or influence decisions on how volunteering is resourced or reflected in policy. The Charter supports the foundations for an excellent volunteer experience and gives individuals, groups and organisations the opportunity to express their support for the spirit of volunteering while upholding the principles of best volunteer practice. An Hour a Week, a Lifetime of Impact: Volunteer to Mentor a Young Person in Aberdeen with MCR Pathways

CR Pathways is a national, awardwinning mentoring programme. The MCR
Charity was established in 2007 to support young people, including those who are care-experienced, or have experienced disadvantage, to help them realise their full potential through education. The programme's aim is to help young people unlock their potential, no matter their circumstances. Working together with their inspiring mentor community and partners, MCR Pathways can help young people to realise their skills and progress onto a positive destination. The key vision is for all young people to experience an equality of education outcomes, career opportunities and life chances. At the core of the MCR Pathways programme is one to one relationship-based mentoring
focused on building confidence, belief and self-esteem. The volunteer mentors spend an hour each week listening to and encouraging a young person in their school. Organisations across Scotland are working with MCR Pathways to create a wave of positive change, impacting our schools and communities, with the programme seeking further organisations to help them recruit more volunteer mentors. The programme believes that every young person deserves a trusted adult they can turn to for guidance and support. By becoming a volunteer mentor, you have the power to make a difference in the lives of young people who need someone to chat with, listen to them, and encourage them. As a strong community of mentors, the programme can move one step
closer to the goal of ensuring that all young people have the support and encouragement they need to reach their full potential. Participatory Arts and Mental Health Fund Creative Scotland/The Baring Foundation/Mental Health Foundation The Participatory Arts and Mental Health Fund will award grants of between £3,000 and £30,000 to support groups and organisations to try out new approaches or develop their existing work with people who experience mental health problems. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to participate in peer support and learning sessions, facilitated by the Mental Health Foundation. The fund aims to support groups and organisations who use participatory arts and creative activity to promote positive mental health and wellbeing within community settings. Applicants should be able to demonstrate an ongoing and sustained commitment to delivering work in this area. Applications will be accepted from a range of voluntary, not-for-profit organisations, associations, groups and clubs or consortiums/partnerships, which have a strong community focus for their activities. You can apply for a minimum of £3,000 and a maximum of £30,000. Between 5 and 10 applications will be supported and there is a total budget of £145,000 for this round. Participants for the ‘Scot Sweet’ weight loss study The Rowett Institute Interested in weight loss, nutrition, gut bacteria, and health? The Rowett Institute are looking to recruit participants (with moderate habitual fibre intake) for a weight loss study to look at the effects of dietary fibre and artificial sweeteners on gut health. In this study, the research team will ask you to follow a set diet (all food provided) for six weeks, the diet will vary in fibre content and type. You will be asked to come to the Rowett Institute for a screening session and to complete a 7day food diary to confirm that you are eligible. Once on the study you will be asked to collect food every Monday, Wednesday and Friday and on four of these occasions there will also be a short test session (approximately 1hr) where will take a blood sample and ask you to provide a stool sample. During the 6 week study participants will also be asked to wear glucose monitors which are applied to the back of the arm. At the end of the study participants will receive feedback on health markers (like cholesterol).

We are inviting our third sector colleagues to our next Mental Health and Wellbeing Forum on Wednesday 5th July 2023, from 10.00am – 12.00pm.
Join Alzheimers Scotland for a free, fun singing group for people with dementia, their partners, family and friends. No experience of singing is required, just bring yourselves and be ready to make some noise! Teas and coffees will be served.
Join Rachel this summer, as we explore the amazing beaches that surround the Greyhope Bay Centre! During this guided beach walk, we'll discover what has been washed up on the shore by the summer tides. We'll also spend some time identifying your finds and learning more about the creatures that call our coast home. What will you find?

Aberdeen Foyer Self-management Programe Do you live with a long-term health condition? Would you like to be more in control and learn how to manage your condition better? Foyer's Self-management Programme is designed specifically for individuals living with long-term health conditions and is kindly funded by the NHS Endowment Fund. The course gives you the tools and support to manage your condition effectively and live well. Join us to build your confidence, expand your health knowledge, set personal goals, and embrace new experiences. The next programme will start on the 13th of July and run every Thursday from 10am to 2pm for 10 weeks Anybody over the age of 18 who lives with a long-term health condition is welcome to take part. Home-Start Aberdeen Information Session
ACVO Member Session – Mental Health Awareness
There’s no rule book for raising a family and sometimes it can feel overwhelming. Every day Home-Start Aberdeen is providing life-changing support to families across the city. There’s no judgement, just compassionate, confidential help from their trained volunteers, backed by expert staff.
This session will focus on raising awareness of common mental health issues and recognising the signs and symptoms of mental health problems. Attendees will develop skills to look after their own mental health and support others experiencing a mental health issue or crisis. ACVO Members now benefit from free HR and Health & Safety support from GCVS (Glasgow Council for the Voluntary Sector), our partner Third Sector Interface based in Glasgow. Also, as an ACVO member as well as the free support available, you also benefit from 25% off consultancy, recruitment and subscription. Not an ACVO Member yet? They help them to create a secure and loving home environment where their children can grow up happy, healthy and confident, and able to achieve their full potential The Home-Start Aberdeen team are holding information sessions to find out more about their services and what they can offer. Growing2gether Mentoring is a 16 – 18-week programme that gives young people the skills to address underlying issues that can lead to becoming disengaged; such as low self-esteem, low aspiration and educational attainment. Growing2gether are now recruiting facilitators to deliver the programme in Dundee. This includes; One afternoon a week working with 8 disengaged young people Accredited Vocational SQA qualification in Personal Development, Level 4: Self and Community and Self Awareness Units Innovative work experience scheme where, for 1.5 hours each afternoon, young people mentor a child in a nursery 1.5 hour facilitated learning sessions for young people led by 2 specially trained facilitators Delivery of the Growing2gether Nursery Programme is based on six hours per week to allow time to prepare for, to deliver and to debrief Growing2gether during the 18-week training period. This equates to 1.5 hour preparation time with the Growing2gether lead facilitator, 3 hours direct contact time and 45 minute debrief after each session. The Facilitator Classroom Training (7 days) includes; 7 days of training in Transformational Youth work and Positive Psychology applied to working with disengaged young people, consisting of a two-day induction followed by 5 one-day sessions (spread over 6 months). This professional training provides transferable skills that can be used in all work with young people. For the six month training period the fee is £100 a day, with the potential of becoming an employee (dependent upon a review). The self employed fee is then £125 a day. With the right candidate a full time position may be offered.
