Development Officer (Strengthening Communities) Hello! My name is Bea and it’s a pleasure to have joined the wonderful ACVO team as the new Development Officer (Strengthening Communities)

support their hard work. So far, I’ve been able to help with organising first aid training, sourcing flowers for a garden, attracting volunteers, networking and more. All of these small acts soon add up and I’m confident that great things lie ahead for Aberdeen communities.

A lot of people ask me what’s involved in my role and, since it’s a brand-new position (never been done before!), the possibilities are endless.

I tried to come into this role without any expectations.

Aberdeen Science Centre receives top TripAdvisor award Great reviews have given Aberdeen Science Centre a place in the top 10% most recommended places to visit.

Aberdeen Science Centre has received the Traveler’s Choice Award from TripAdvisor for the second year in a row, just weeks after achieving 5-star visitor attraction status by VisitScotland.

The accolade means Aberdeen Science Centre has kept its place among visitors’ favourites and is among the top 10% most recommended visitor attractions.

Travellers’ Choice recognises businesses that consistently deliver great service. Businesses that are awarded with this certificate are ranking among the top 10% of listings on TripAdvisor, and to qualify, a visitor attraction must have great reviews from travellers around the globe on TripAdvisor over the last 12 months.

Bryan Snelling, chief executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said the award is extremely valuable, as it directly reflects a visitor’s experience.

“We are thrilled to have been awarded the Travellers’ Choice award by TripAdvisor again, especially as it is based solely on the feedback from our visitors.

“The team has done an amazing job engaging and supporting visitors to the science centre, and that’s often pointed out along with our fascinating science experiments in the reviews."

Aberdeen Science Centre has 92 reviews on TripAdvisor, and 84 visitors have rated their visit as excellent. Alongside the brilliant staff and interactive exhibits, visitors praise the dog-friendly café, clean washrooms and mention that they spent longer time than they expected.

Due to high demand, school trips are fully booked until the end of this school year, and bookings for August and September are also filling up.

Aberdeen Science Centre reopened in Autumn 2020, following a major £6million redevelopment project to create an aspirational science centre which reflects the STEM priorities for both industry and education.

“Great afternoon”, “spent hours”, “great place to visit with kids” are among the most popular mentions.

More than 60 new interactive exhibits over two floors now await visitors, including The OPITO Theatre of Energy – the UK’s first immersive experience of its kind and RoboThespian, a chatty humanoid robot sponsored by the centre’s Digital Futures Partner, Equinor.

It’s the second major award for Aberdeen Science Centre this spring. In April it was announced that Aberdeen Science Centre had become the second 5-star visitor attraction in Aberdeen, while Visit Scotland has given five stars to just nine visitor attractions in Aberdeenshire.

The centre’s exhibits are aimed at all ages and are themed into six zones: Energy; Space; Life Sciences; Make It, Test It; and a dedicated area for the under-6s, as well as the Shell Learning Zone, where science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are brought to life.

A group of 37 primary seven pupils from Milltimber Primary School visited local charity Camphill School Aberdeen last month, where they undertook workshops and crafting lessons. During the visit they presented a cheque for £200 from the classes Grow a Fiver Project.

The pupils were invited onto the estate to find out more about what Camphill School Aberdeen does and while there, they presented the charity with a donation from the pupils schools project. The money was earned from a school project ‘Grow a Fiver’, where the pupils were given £5 to buy resources they needed to execute their money making ideas, such as throwing sponges at P7's, hook a duck, customised stone painting and nerf gun competitions. The money raised from the project was to go towards the costs of their activities week at the end of term, but the school kids decided they wanted to make a donation to Camphill.

Wiepke Busch, Day Services Manager said: “We were incredibly touched by the pupil’s gesture and wanted them to visit the school to see what their donation will go towards. They got to see the new born lambs, say hello to the cows and feed our older lambs. They also visited our walled garden and ponies at the stables before being split into four groups that rotated around four of our key workshops for our students.”

Camphill School Aberdeen which is based across three campuses in the west of the city, delivers life-transforming opportunities for 95 children and young people with learning disabilities and complex additional support needs.

Mr Skinner, teacher at Milltimber Primary School said: “The children had such a wonderful day out at Camphill School Aberdeen. They got to undertake key skills lessons such as getting alpaca wool ready for felting, learning to repair a bike puncture, undertaking woodwork workshops and collecting cones to create a sustainable path around the gardens. It was a great day out had by all, and the sun was shining which was also a bonus.”

Platinum seal of approval for Charlie House founder

J

ust a day after the announcement of the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, Charlie House founder Tracy Johnstone was named as a national Platinum Champion on Friday 3rd June 2022.

Organised by the Royal Voluntary Service, the Platinum Champions Award recognises volunteers from all corners of Britain and from a range of causes.

And they have the Royal seal of approval, through the Royal Voluntary Service President, HRH The Duchess of Cornwall. BBC’s The One Show and Morning Live are also showcasing some of the stories.

Tracy said: “I am absolutely blown away by the news, especially following our Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service “It is incredibly humbling and not something I ever thought about when I set out trying to make a difference for children like my son in our community.

“We have come so far in the 11 years since Charlie House was formed and its success is down to the enthusiasm and good will of the people of the North-east getting behind our dream and supporting us.

“It is so wonderful that all this recognition has come in Volunteers' Week, held to thank volunteers and give recognition not only to them but to the huge difference they make to people and their communities.

“I couldn’t have done any of this without the support of my family, the Charlie House team and the amazing generosity of the public and businesses in the North-east.”

A total of 490 volunteers across the UK have been selected as Platinum Champions and receive a specially designed, official Platinum Champions pin and a signed certificate from the Duchess of Cornwall.

In 2008, Tracy and her husband Craig were expecting twins to join older son Ellis, Tracy went into labour prematurely and the twins were delivered at 24 weeks. The family unfortunately only had a day with their daughter Eva, who passed away the day following the twins’ birth.

Louis, however, battled on through many operations and procedures and spent the majority of his first year in hospital. Tracy found it an extremely stressful time juggling family life with hospital life, trying to have quality time with Ellis and make sure that Louis was cared for too.

As Louis developed, it became apparent that he would have severe disabilities and multiple complex medical needs, he would need 24hour care, seven days a week and

potentially would not live to adulthood.

The family tried everywhere locally to get support but there was none. Louis was too complex for most of the local support networks and eventually, the family had to travel over 100 miles to the nearest support facility.

Tracy and Craig couldn’t understand why there was no support facility or network in the North-east and set out determined to make a difference by starting their own charity.

Charlie House was born, with the aim of making sure that all children with life-limiting and life-threatening conditions in North-east Scotland receive the support they require.

In 2018, the charity launched the Big Build Appeal to build a dedicated support centre in Aberdeen so that families no longer need to travel huge distances to get vital support, respite and care.

A huge focus of Future Choices is to facilitate social inclusion through hosting recreational activities for the disabled community, as well as providing respite for their carers. Like many charities, Future Choices is supported by a team of volunteers and Ryan has been a youth volunteer with the organisation since he was 12 years old.

Ryan can see first hand the impact his volunteering makes in the community but also views it as something which brings benefit to himself.

Volunteering Action Plan Launches at the Gathering 2022

CVO was delighted to participate in the superb launch of the Volunteering Action Plan for Scotland at the Gathering Event hosted by SCVOScottish Council for Voluntary Organisations.

The Plan is the result of great collaboration led by the Scottish Government and involving hundreds of people across Scotland, Volunteer Scotland, local Third Sector Interfaces, local and national voluntary groups, public partners all dedicated to volunteering.

The Volunteering Action Plan will create a Scotland where everyone can volunteer, more often, and throughout their lives, with 47 ‘actions on the ground’ identified to support and further build the tremendous contribution volunteers make over the next decade. It is a living plan and there will be continued opportunities to review, refresh and take forward new actions to advance volunteering.

Sometimes people need support expressing what they want to say and having their point of view taken seriously. Advocacy Volunteers are there to be on someone’s side. They can help people to access information, to understand their rights, to explore options and to express their views and wishes.

Advocacy Service Aberdeen (ASA) is a local charity founded in 1996. They provide an independent advocacy service for people in the city of Aberdeen. Their service is free and confidential and all staff and volunteers work to The Scottish Independent Advocacy Alliance’s (SIAA) Principles and Standards and Code of Practice.

All ASA client meetings/appointments usually take place on Monday to Friday, between 9:00am and 5:00pm. There is an expectation that Advocacy Volunteers will take on 1-2 clients, which equates to approximately 2-3 hours per week. Advocacy Volunteers are given ongoing support, training and development opportunities.

The organisations works with a wide range of client groups and assist people with a variety of issues.

Community Support Volunteers – Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (Aberdeen City Services) Join our amazing team of Community Support Volunteers in Aberdeen, who support people who have had one of our conditions to develop autonomy and confidence in self-management, enabling them to fully engage with their community and activities of their choosing. The service follows a pathway from hospital to community and can be delivered in a one-toone and/or group setting in person, virtually or via telephone.

We also have opportunities for volunteers to become Walk Leaders, to safely lead community health walks either in a 1:1 or group setting, while effectively supporting people living with and at high risk of our conditions.

The service can be delivered to provide person-centred support for those with a communication difficulty and/or to support an individual to achieve a specific goal.

The Big Bounce Event Volunteers – Charlie House We are looking for volunteers to help with an event in Aberdeen city centre – The Big Bounce. The event takes place at the Bon Accord Centre between the 11th-14th August 2022. Flexible times are available to help during these times. Volunteers will be greeting members of the public, checking tickets, helping at the inflatables, and making sure members of the public have a safe and fun experience.

The Bon Accord Centre in partnership with Aberdeen Inspired will again take part in ONE GREAT DAY in 2022 by hosting Aberdeen’s Big Bounce. Charlie House has been invited to be the local charity partner of the event.

With bouncy castles, giant inflatables, music and much more, it’s once again guaranteed to be the leading family event in the Aberdeen summer calendar.

Excellent support and relevant training is provided to all volunteers. Volunteers will be given full induction, including a health & safety briefing on the day. Charlie House staff will be on hand to provide support and guidance throughout the event.

Charlie House will also pay any out-of-pocket expenses for volunteers as well as mileage (at 45p/mile) and reasonable public transport costs. Volunteers will also receive a voucher for a drink from the charity’s ReCHarge Café.

Volunteer Drivers – Kaimhill Strollers The latest from our team.

Volunteers required to drive a 17-seater minibus for an over 50s walking group based at Kaimhill Learning Centre, Pitmedden Terrace, Aberdeen AB10 7HR. Drivers should be over 25 and under 70 and have category D1 on their driving licence.

We are a friendly group who walk on Thursdays leaving the centre at 9.30am and usually return around mid afternoon. We normally walk between 5 and 7 miles and most drivers in the past have been happy to walk with the group but this is not a requirement!

Prospective volunteers will be given support to familiarise themselves with the vehicle and are welcome to come along on a walk to see what is involved.

Protesting and public outreach is a powerful engagement tool, but sometimes we also need to combine this with talking directly to people in power - your local decision makers. As a Campaign & Lobbying Volunteer, you will combine these 2 campaigning tools to fight for legislative change. By building relationships with your local politicians, whilst also delivering outreach and awareness raising events locally, you will inspire your local MP to take action for the animals. And - you don't need to be an expert on politics. We will give you everything you need, and ultimately this about raising an issue to your MP as a concerned member of their constituency. It's their job to listen to you!

As a Campaign & Lobbying Volunteer, you will take the lead on driving local action for our legislative campaigns. You will help animals in 2 key ways: 1. Lobbying your local politician(s): you will be building and maintaining a relationship with your local MP, talking to them about The Humane League UK's campaigns and encouraging them to take the steps we need to drive progress for animals. Digitisation and Cataloguing Volunteer Scottish Fisheries Museum Trust Do you have knowledge of boats or fishing? Or maybe you just have a good eye? If you have one of these and an internet connection, then we want you!

The Scottish Fisheries Museum has launched a database for the public to access our photo collection online, but now we must catalogue what it is in each image. This role will involve working on our database to add descriptions and keywords to each photo to inform people about the photo subject and optimise searching.

No specialist knowledge or experience is required as full training on our system will be provided, but experience of using databases is advantageous. Knowledge of the fishing industry would be useful.

As this is a remote position, we can work to your schedule.

Playgroup Support Volunteers – Aberdeen North Parish The latest from our team.

This is a fantastic opportunity to use current child care and hospitality skills or to develop new ones. The playgroup is well attended and is a wonderful atmosphere. Duties include helping with setting out toys, craft activities, snacks and occasional help with teas and coffees for parents/carers.

There is opportunity to develop skills in leading craft, story time and games if desired. Volunteers would engage with the children during free play, being mindful of health and safety, modelling sharing, praising children’s creative ideas etc.

Volunteers would be warm and welcoming to parents and carers encouraging them to engage in play with their children and stepping in to play while parents/carers have a chance for a cuppa. Duties also include tidying up, cleaning the assigned toy set , and putting away toys and crafts.

Excellent support and guidance is provided to all volunteers. Volunteers will be given an induction into the roles and tasks.

Through an informal chat we will agree the volunteers experience and identify together the needs for support and training or if the candidate is experienced, responsibilities for the person. All requests for training will be discussed and considered. Support will take the form of a team and individual check in before and after each playgroup session.

This is a joyful, fun team who work hard to ensure the children and families have a positive and enjoyable experience while they are with us. You would be a welcome member of our team. This is a term time opportunity on Thursday’s. The group runs from 1pm until 2:30pm. Volunteers are needed from 12:30 until 3pm each week.

Let’s Do Net Zero Community Buildings Fund

T

he Scottish Government’s Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) is here to support communities to engage with, participate in and benefit from the energy transition to net zero emissions.

The new Let’s Do Net Zero Community Buildings Fund under CARES will help community organisations reduce their building energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. The fund opened in May 2022 and is planned to run until the end of March 2025, subject to funding availability Funding is available for many types of self-managed community buildings, including - village halls; community centres; community hubs; sports facilities; faith buildings.

Who can apply?

Applicants must be constituted nonprofit distributing community organisations, including organisations with charitable status, that are established and operating across a geographically defined community or faith groups.

Organisations that are constituted but unincorporated may also apply but must provide additional information.

How much is available?

Grant funding is available for up to 80% of eligible costs up to a maximum of £80,000. The inclusion or exclusion of VAT in CARES funding offers does not alter the grant maximum of £80,000.

CARES has already supported many community organisations throughout Scotland to successfully install renewable technologies in their community buildings including: Cairnlea Parish Church installed two air source heat pumps and now has a cosy hall to restart its community activities Aboyne and Mid-Deeside Community Shed installed four air source heat pumps to provide space heating at its community shed Loch Ness Hub installed solar panels and an air source heat pump to decarbonise the building’s heat and energy supply.

Ian Findlay Path Fund launches Summer 2022

This £1.5 million fund is for the improvement of path networks to increase walking, wheeling and cycling, for a happier, healthier, greener Scotland.

he Ian Findlay Path Fund will support the improvement of local paths within and between communities, making it easier for people to travel by walking, wheeling, or cycling for daily journeys.

The new grant fund is supported by Transport Scotland and will launch in Summer 2022. It will help organisations to improve paths to make active travel easier and more attractive. This will encourage people to leave their cars at home for short journeys and benefit air quality, reduce CO2 emissions and improve our physical health and mental wellbeing.

Form Digital launch Octopus Charity Fund

ward-winning creative design studio Form Digital has announced the launch of a new initiative to support local communities and charities around Aberdeen and Glasgow, where they are based. To mark their eighth year, Form Digital set out to do something special to commemorate the occasion and give back to local communities. The announcement comes following a record year for the company.

The Octopus Fund is a £10,000 pot to be distributed across work spanning brand, print and digital for community and third sector companies based in either Aberdeen or Glasgow who are looking to help grow their brands.

Applicants interested in a share of the pot should be those seeking help to develop their marketing efforts either on or offline, including brand awareness, promoting an upcoming fundraiser, and building or transforming a website.

Applications are open until July 31 and applicants will be notified by the middle of August if they have been successful.

To support and encourage families in their parenting roles and actively promote their involvement in their child’s learning.

To observe, assess and record children’s progress and highlight any concerns according to centre policies.

To promote Family centre links with local families and offer additional support where appropriate.

To actively develop the roles through training, supervision and appraisal systems and offer guidance.

To promote links with other agencies and be aware of other local resources.

To nurture an environment of professional practice which respects and promotes the involvement of both adults and children and encourage community spirit.

To carry out all usual nursery duties relevant to the post as may be required by the project.

To participate in implementing the improvement plan to ensure targets are met.

In the North-east of Scotland, we are looking for an experienced Education Co-ordinator to support delivery of our current ESOL offer as well as facilitating the delivery of new and exciting projects.

You will liaise with partners and key stakeholders to continue a high standard of ESOL delivery across the Northeast of Scotland, seeking out opportunities to increase and expand our provision to reach those who need it most.

As part of the wider team at WEA, you will work alongside colleagues locally and nationally, to contribute towards the ongoing development of our online and in person delivery.

You will be responsible for: The daily planning, coordination and facilitation of ESOL classes.

Producing detailed end of month/ project reporting as required.

Marketing of ESOL delivery and supporting learners to engage in our classes.
