he ACVO Team and Board would like to extend our thanks to our members,

partners and representatives from the wider third sector community who came along to our 2023 AGM on Wednesday 22nd November at Aberdeen Arts Centre. As well as presenting a fantastic opportunity to meet and network with colleagues, a highlight of the event came in the form of a panel discussion featuring Dave Black, Karen Milne,

and Cliff Watt from the ACVO Board which stimulated questions on policy, member support and communications, giving insights into the challenges facing the sector. As we bring 2023 to a close, we would like to echo the sentiment discussed at the AGM and thank the third sector in Aberdeen for another year of tireless work and support. Keep an eye out in ACVO News in 2024 for details of our future networking and discussion events!

ACVO UPDATES

Latest update from The Promise Scotland from Gette Cobban, Senior Development Officer - ACVO TSI ‘How public debt and arrears are experienced by low-income families’:

a report from Aberlour

The Promise: Devising Plan 24-30 Together Fiona Duncan, Chair of The Promise Scotland has published an outline of the work needed so that the The Promise Plan 24-30 can be devised co-operatively. The timeline is divided into three phases between now and June 2024 to understand, create, check and publish Scotland’s plan to #KeepThePromise.

In case you missed this earlier in the year when it was published, I would like to draw your attention to “How public debt and arrears are experienced by lowincome families”, a report of research commissioned by Aberlour and carried out by Professor Morag Treanor from the University of Glasgow. The study, delves into the consequences of debt, including Council tax and rent arrears, perpetuating a cycle of financial hardship. Focused on school meal debt and Universal Credit recipients, the research underscores the alarming debt crisis faced by vulnerable families, revealing the struggle to meet basic needs amid insufficient income. Reflecting on findings from the research, Professor Treanor said: “Public debt is pulling people further into poverty and holding them there. On top, the cost of living crisis is stopping families from helping each other – poverty is becoming wider and deeper. Action is needed to prevent poverty becoming endemic in Scotland.” The report can be downloaded from the Aberlour website via bit.ly/3RkJfk4

In June 2023, Fiona, as Independent Strategic Advisor, revealed her role in shaping Plan 24-30. The plan succeeds Plan 21-24, acknowledging that not all goals from the previous plan will be achieved on time. Plan 24-30 becomes pivotal, demanding meticulous sequencing, prioritisation, and acceleration of efforts. Fiona emphasised collective involvement in crafting the plan, highlighting the necessity for engagement from the care community and organisations instigating change. Continuity is stressed, with a thorough evaluation of Plan 21-24 influencing Plan 24-30. Fiona has committed to transparent communication by sharing the plan's approach and timeline, divided into three phases starting with broad engagement. Core principles for Plan 24-30 were introduced, refined through feedback, emphasising a commitment to the care community and a flexible, milestone-driven approach. The plan aims to #KeepThePromise by 2030, with a robust monitoring framework ensuring accountability.

Fiona outlined a careful transition from Plan 21-24 to Plan 24-30, underscoring clarity and support for those working towards change. The core principles will persist at the plan's core until its fruition. The final publication is set for June 2024. Read more at bit.ly/Plan-24-30

Susan Morrison

Development Officer (Community Planning Partnership) It’s the same me, I’m still here but due to a change in my working pattern, there will be a change in my role and job title. I joined ACVO in Sept. 2014 and knew (embarrassingly now when I think about it) very little about the third sector. Now 9+ years later I can’t believe how much I now know about this most incredible sector and the truly amazing and inspiring people that volunteer or/and work in this city. As of 4th December I will be moving to a 3 day Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday - working week role, focused on Community Planning. This is to be an active role that will encourage, develop and ensure effective equitable representation and involvement of the Third Sector in all aspects of community and locality planning. My remit around Poverty, Community Justice and Mental Health remains, so I will stay connected in with these agendas.

And watch this space – starting in the New Year, I will be doing regular updates and articles of interest in ACVO News! What’s Community Planning ? Community planning is about how public bodies work together with communities to plan and deliver better services that make a real difference to people’s lives. It drives public service reform by bringing together local public services with the communities they serve, providing a focus for partnership working that targets specific local circumstances. In the form of a Community Planning Partnership, partners work together to improve local services and to ensure that they meet the needs of local people, especially those who need the services the most. Together these public bodies form a community planning partnership (CPP). In Aberdeen the CPP is called Community Planning Aberdeen and ACVO is one of the partners involved. You can read more about Community Planning Aberdeen here and at the Scottish Government website.

She added: “It’s very fitting that we were able to announce Julie’s appointment during Trustees Week (6-10 November), as our board members are a fundamental part of our volunteer network. A trustee acts as a good friend, not there to run the organisation day-to-day but to challenge and support the executive leadership team to be the best they can be. “There are benefits for both sides. We are fortunate enough to gain insight from a cross section of professionals, while trustees are able to give something back, enhancing their own development, learning new things and expanding their professional network. Many use it as a way to build a nonexecutive director portfolio. “We believe a diverse board representing a wide range of backgrounds and skills is fundamental to the success of Aberdeen Cyrenians, and we are always keen to hear from people who would be interested in supporting the organisation at this level.” For further information about board opportunities and how to apply, visit www.weareac.org/ourboard

Aberdeen Employability Training Providers Forum Survey The Aberdeen Employability Training Providers Forum (ETPF) are carrying out an exercise to map employability activity in the city. Initial findings from a mapping survey were shared and discussed at an ETPF Networking Day on 29th September. Now, the forum are hoping to widen the survey to enable them to map all of the employability activity in the city. This is a simple survey to gauge what programmes and provision is out there and what they involve. The survey is quick to complete and includes questions asking what the provision is, what age range it applies to and where it takes place. For those wishing to complete the survey, please visit: Aberdeen City Employability Service Provision.

If you are a small organisation providing CV support or job searching, or a training provider with lots of courses on offer, or anything in between, ETPF want to hear from you! The overall aim of the project is to provide people in the city an easy, user friendly guide to employability support so they can match their needs to a specific organisation and/or programme. It will also allow the various employability providers in the city to understand what provision is available to help people they are working with as well as identifying any gaps in provision. utism & Neurodiversity North Scotland (A-ND) offer help and support to autistic and neurodivergent individuals, their families and wider support networks.

As of May 2023, the A-ND team provide direct, ongoing support and services to 150 individuals and their families across Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray and the North of Scotland. As part of their wide range of services, A-ND established their Keep

“The Keep the Promise Pilot Project was established to trial enhanced support with some of our children and young people,” says Janet. “By visiting children in their homes, in addition to in Playscheme, we have greater opportunities to gather information surrounding their family background, home environment, and the wider context of their lives outside of Playscheme.

the Promise Pilot Project after receiving funding from The Promise Partnership through the Corra Foundation. The project involves two groups of eight families, where dedicated support workers undertake home visits with one group to learn about the child’s home environment, with the aim of understanding their wider circumstances. Gette Cobban, ACVO’s Senior Development Officer, who works to support organisations who deliver The Promise in Aberdeen, spoke with Janet Gauthier, Team Leader, and Julia Christina Clark, Support Worker, about their work with the Keep the Promise Pilot Project, discussing what impact this service has on the families and how the project follows The Promise, Scotland’s guarantee of ensuring all children grow up safe, loved and respected.

“We therefore sought to build deeper relationships, become more consistent in the child’s life and learn about their home environment through Keep the Promise.” “We work as a small team comprising of Janet, myself and our other Support Worker, Tristan Mathers,” Julia says. “Two members of the team go out on each family home visit, where one is able to spend

time with the child, whilst the other spends time with the family. “We sit, we listen and we offer understanding to the family, whilst building a relationship with the child outside of Playscheme. It's a truly cherishing experience being able to support these families at a deeper level.” Keep the Promise goes hand-in-hand with A-ND’s Playscheme service, meaning the children involved in the Pilot Project attend the Playscheme service in addition to their home visits. Both Janet and Julia agree that they have noticed a huge difference in the children’s wellbeing as a result of being part of the Keep the Promise Pilot Project. “We have strong relationships with all of the children at Playscheme, but see an improved depth of support when we are able to have increased dedicated time with families,” Janet says. “Home visits provide consistency and more opportunities to tailor support to what is best for each individual child, with having dedicated time.” The Keep the Promise Pilot Project was established March 2023, with home visits being implemented from May 2023. Although this has only ran for some months, Janet and Julia share the great impact that the project has had so far. Julia describes one of her key children, who previously found it challenging to regulate his emotions in a way that was safe for him and others. This caused considerable challenges for him and his family, and impacted their ability to partake in activities together: “Through the time that we have been working with him and his family, we found out that he likes social stories. These stories really help autistic and neurodivergent children by explaining social situations, allowing them to feel more prepared when they happen. “We tailored some social stories for him, and we have really noticed a huge difference when he then spent time with his family. “For example, one meal time he was able to stay at the table with no feelings of distress or anxiety. It’s beautiful to watch the relationship with his family, and the way that they have listened and properly taken on all of the resources that we have helped to create with them.” “It has been amazing to see each individual family find the solutions that are best for them,” Janet adds.

ACVO News 22 December 2023

“We really feel that we have been able to build a strong relationship with his parents, and his sister as well. The Keep the Promise team are all able to pool our collective knowledge of what his life looks like, to then use this to understand the triggers that can set off his distress. “As a result of our social stories, that we have learned through our home visits with him, we are able to prepare this child and give him the knowledge for any anticipated situations, such as a walk in the park or meal time with his family. We can then turn a potentially negative experience into something positive.” Janet continues, emphasising the way in which the support in Playscheme is improved through Keep the Promise.

“Being able to provide this extensive, tailored support definitely feels better as practitioners, for the family and for the child themselves.” Janet Gauthier, Keep the Promise Team Leader at Autism & Neurodiversity North Scotland

“In Playscheme, we are limited in the extra time that we can spend with families. “However in Keep the Promise, we have dedicated, protected time with those families. It really feels that we can walk with the families, and that we are going in the same direction in terms of understanding around their child. “We have a clear focus on preventing challenging situations, rather than hearing stories from some families about a situation that has happened after the fact. We are then able to act proactively with the family to find the solutions that are right for them.” “Keep the Promise is essentially taking an unpredictable situation and making it predictable,” Julia states. “A lot of the children that we support through Keep the Promise, we find where their anxieties lie and we try to alleviate these feelings by explaining known challenging situations for them.” Janet continues: “Being able to provide this extensive, tailored support definitely feels better as practitioners, for the family and for the child themselves. Keep the Promise is really beneficial across the board in this sense.” The passion that Janet and Julia have for the project radiates in their words as they describe their feelings of seeing the significant impact that Keep the Promise has on the children and families.

News 23 ACVO December 2023

Julia expresses: “Being able to witness the impact of Keep the Promise is so special to us. The children across this project, as well as Playscheme, hold a very deep place within our hearts. “The more time you spend with someone, the more you understand their unique language. It's about being able to speak each child's individual language. Understanding their words, vocalisations or other noises which they may use to communicate is truly beautiful and fills you with such a level of joy.” “A lot of the children we support do not communicate verbally, this is just not part of their world,” explains Janet. “At A-ND, one of our key values is creating an environment that is right for our children. We do not want them to try changing themselves to fit, we are going to change to fit them. “So this is a really key example with communication differences, especially when we have more time with the child so that we can join in and understand them more.” Janet continues: “The only way a child can grow up safe, loved and respected is if you understand them and have a solid relationship with them. This is what our project aims to achieve by following The Promise.” “At A-ND, our main vision and goal is to create fulfilling and happy lives for people who think differently,” says Janet. “We have seen the benefit of extra time with a dedicated team and clear focus, and our hope is to provide that same depth of support to every person we support.” “To achieve this, we need things to change on a local and national scale”, adds Julia. “From there, we can get more staff involved in the project and offer further support to more children. “We have already seen so much growth and so much change with the eight families we have supported. This has been extraordinary, and we want this to expand and continue.” “The world can be so overwhelming”, continues Janet. “So what we really want is to work with families, discover what they need, and how we can help them along their journey through life.

“The only way a child can grow up safe, loved and respected is if you understand them and have a solid relationship with them. This is what our project aims to achieve by following The Promise.” Janet Gauthier, Keep the Promise Team Leader at Autism & Neurodiversity North Scotland

“With Keep the Promise now in place, we have been able to deepen our relationships, further our understanding and spread the message of what life can look like for these children and families. “We strive to be innovators, finding new approaches and ways of working with the children and their families. This is what we look forward to achieving with Keep the Promise in the future.”

INSPIRE PRESENT THEIR 2023 PANTOMIME:

THE PURPLE BRICK ROAD

News 29 ACVO December 2023

FRIDAY 24TH AND SATURDAY 25TH NOVEMBER SAW THE RETURN OF ONE INSPIRE’S ANNUAL HIGHLIGHTS IN THE FORM OF THEIR PANTOMIME, ‘THE PURPLE BRICK ROAD’, STARRING THOSE SUPPORTED BY THE ORGANISATION, MEMBERS OF THE INSPIRE TEAM AND VOLUNTEERS. ACVO CAUGHT UP WITH THE TEAM AT ONE OF THEIR REHEARSALS EARLIER THIS MONTH TO FIND OUT MORE...

BEHIND THE CURTAIN: UNVEILING THE INSPIRE PANTOMIME

Step into the magical world of the Inspire pantomime, where laughter echoes, friendships flourish, and inclusivity takes centre stage. We met with the team behind the production while they were gearing up for opening night to unravel the enchanting tapestry that weaves together the captivating performance. Cast members Chris, Vicki, Gregor and Ronan shared their thoughts about the pantomime and why they are keen once again to take part and reprise familiar roles for 2023. Gregor, steps into the shoes of ‘Buttons’. With infectious energy, Gregor recounts his initial attraction to the production, which is rooted in a love for the sheer fun and camaraderie the experience promises, and seems unphased by the idea of the curtain rising in a few weeks’ time. “I just kind of roll with it. I’ve memorised the lines, I wait for my cue and learn as I go along! Acting alongside everyone else gives me a boost and I’m looking forward to hitting the stage again this year” says Gregor.

GREGOR

ACVO News 30 December 2023

Ronan, who plays ‘Tiny the Tin Man’, has starred opposite Gregor in former years as the other half of the pantomime’s comedy double act. “I really enjoy the acting and coming along every Wednesday for rehearsals. I’m so glad that the pantomime is back again this year”. The production of the Purple Brick Road reflects the ethos of Inspire as as an organisation and their commitment to inclusivity, where everyone has a voice and is encouraged to take part and let their skills shine. “I think people don't realise some of the challenges involved in putting on a pantomime with adults with learning disabilities” says Chris, Development Team Leader at Inspire.

RONAN

“It's not as simple as getting a script and having everyone learn their parts. We have to take into consideration all the actors’ ability levels and have to make sure that parts are tailored to them to ensure no one misses out. “For instance, this year we have a character in it that can't speak but uses Makaton and has a support worker on stage with them. Through the process of the pantomime, the character learns how to communicate.” “We always like to challenge perceptions with the work we do and thought, well why couldn’t a main character have a support worker?” adds Vicki, who returns to support the production of the pantomime this year despite no longer being part of the Inspire staff team (she notes the love she has for the process the reason behind her volunteering).

VICKI

“People have support workers in every day life so I think it’s important to show this in the production. It doesn't need to be hidden. We've got wheelchair users on stage, taking full part in all the dance routines. We've got people on walkers, we've got people that are nonverbal, everyone is involved and have full parts to play - we find the people who want to take part and adapt the story to fit them.” “The character I mentioned that uses Makaton” says Chris, “in the story, they go to look for their voice, but it turns out they've had it all along. Inspire works throughout the year to give people a voice so it’s nice that we were able to include that message in the pantomime.” “Taking part can be a transformative experience for participants, and we are really grateful for the support we receive in order to fund the production of the pantomime. This year we received extra support from the Aberdeen Student Show, it’s fantastic to see the community come together and get behind what we do”.

THE CURTAIN RISES:

SHOWTIME FOR THE PURPLE BRICK ROAD Friday 24th November saw the first performance of The Purple Brick Road’s two night run at Aberdeen Arts Centre. The cast performed to a packed audience who were treated to an evening of fun, laughter and entertainment. Andrew Reid, Development Manager at Inspire said: “Once again this year's pantomime was an absolute triumph, with both performances being enjoyed by packed audiences who deservedly gave standing ovations at the end to the cast and crew. “The sense of achievement for the people we support who participate in the pantomime is always clear to see and their commitment to attending rehearsals, learning lines and dance routines etc. never ceases to amaze me. Everyone involved in the Purple Brick Road

should all be incredibly proud of how well they did. Taking everything in their stride and delivering the performances that they did on both nights was absolutely remarkable.” He continued: “The pantomime is a shining example of the work that we do at Inspire to help people achieve their outcomes and fulfil their ambitions, and the confidence and self-belief that participating in the event gives to the people we support is a joy to behold. Straight after Saturday's performance had finished there were already whispers of who wanted to be involved in next year's panto - so watch this space!"

The Rewards of Volunteering with the

Gathimba Edwards Foundation: Volunteer's Perspective

V

olunteering can be a transformative

experience, offering individuals the chance to make a tangible impact on the lives of others. The Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF), a charity dedicated to supporting vulnerable children in Kenya, has attracted volunteers from all walks of life. In this article we hear from two of the charity’s loyal volunteers on what drives and inspires them to continue volunteering time and time again with the charity… Krzystof Olszewski’s involvement with the Gathimba Edwards Foundation began through a desire to contribute to a charity that was very precise and efficient in what they do. Having previously supported larger charities throughout the years, Krzystof was discouraged with the volume of

administration and unnecessary internal spend that could have been directed towards the very people they were set up help. When he came across Gathimba Edwards Foundation’s profile on LinkedIn he realised that they worked quite differently to their larger counterparts. This realisation motivated Krzystof to get involved with the charity. “One of my volunteering highlights with GEF was during the Aberdeen Parade, where I dressed up as Marcel the Monkey, meeting and high-fiving kids in the street. Apart from assisting in races, I sometimes provide financial support to the kids in Kenya. It very pleasing to see that my contributions enable kids to go to school or get some essential medical help that they sometimes need, “Krzystof said. Lisa McConachie has also provided unwavering volunteering support to GEF on multiple occasions. Lisa was inspired to volunteer after hearing a

passionate speech about the plight of Kenyan families from Myles Edwards, “By the time Myles had finished his talk I knew this was an adventure I wanted to be part of. We could hear the passion from Myles and felt that this was a cause we could both support.” Lisa has now volunteered on housebuilding trips to Kenya and has been involved in the build of new homes for disadvantaged Kenyan families. “I don’t think we will ever forget seeing the living conditions of the four families who we were building for and then seeing the joy in everybody’s faces when homes were handed over.” Lisa adds, “We were part of a team of about thirty who worked together to build four homes, and we encouraged a wide range of new skills. This contribution has led to the families to having a more stable life and all the children are able to continue in Education.” Lisa is firm in her belief that volunteering for a charity such as GEF is making a huge improvement to the lives of countless families and feels a huge sense of reward and satisfaction from being involved, “It is just an incredible feeling and buzz to see the difference my time and donations can make to people’s lives, and I would not hesitate to encourage everyone to volunteer.”

King’s Award celebrati children’s charity volu

V

olunteers working for Aberdeen-based children’s charity AberNecessities have

received The King’s Award for Voluntary Service for its work in supporting children living in poverty in the city and shire. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE. This year is the first time the awards are offered by His Majesty King Charles III. More than 100 volunteers at AberNecessities have been awarded the honour thanks to their work sorting and preparing emergency packs of basic essentials which are delivered by volunteer

drivers directly to families. The basic items provided by AberNecessities from its premises in Dyce, Aberdeen include formula milk, nappies, toiletries, clothing, beds, and equipment. AberNecessities is one of 262 local charities, social enterprises and voluntary groups to receive the prestigious award this year. The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to benefit their communities. It was created in 2002 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth II’s Golden Jubilee and, following his accession, His Majesty The King emphasised his desire to continue the Award. Recipients are announced annually on 14th

November, The King’s Birthday. Six representatives of AberNecessities will receive the award crystal and certificate from Sandy Manson, Lord-Lieutenant of Aberdeenshire later this year. In addition, two representatives from AberNecessities will attend a garden party at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in July 2024. Danielle Flecher-Horn, founder of AberNecessities, said: “We are thrilled that our volunteers have been recognised by His Majesty The King for their vital work in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. Every day, men and women from across the northeast join us to ensure no child should go without. From lovingly packing gifts for a new mum, to

ion for north-east unteers delivering a cot to ensure a baby has a safe place to sleep, our volunteers work tirelessly alongside staff to provide items in a timely way which families with the support of professionals have requested. “Our volunteers' dedication is unwavering and without their time and effort we wouldn’t be able to provide the same standard of service. Paying attention to every gift that is given and choosing items which are as individual as the child receiving them. They all pour their heart and soul into our operation with the same goal which is to bring a smile to children and relief to parents to support family moments and create a childhood of memories. Each item we gift is so much more

than an item and I often have volunteers ask questions like “should I pop welly boots in with this one? He might like to jump in puddles with all this rain we have had.” These moments are tribute to the thought and empathic nature of our team. “The timing of the award couldn’t have been better, as the volunteers get our grotto ready for Christmas deliveries. In 2022, we distributed 2,704 Christmas Eve boxes and gifts to local children who were at risk of not having a story to tell at school after the holidays. We know from feedback that the Christmas Eve boxes along with the new gifts we were able to supply a memorable Christmas. Last Christmas saw unprecedented demand, yet our volunteers never slowed down and through blood, sweat and tears ensured that the special and unmovable deadline was met.

“Our team are regularly faced with harrowing stories and situations. Some of which are hard to comprehend however, this never deters them from turning up. In fact, I’m so proud to say, it ignites their compassion even more. With many weekends and evenings being committed especially over busier periods it’s always an amazing atmosphere full of kindness. “With one in five children in our area living in poverty, the demand for the services provided by AberNecessities has never been greater, and none of this would be possible without the hard work and commitment of our volunteers. I congratulate, and from the bottom of my heart, thank them all.”

elivered by Inspiring Scotland, and funded by the Scottish Government, successful charities will

Speaking on the need for the fund, Rob Holland, Director of National Autistic Society Scotland said: “Sadly, there is often little in the way of support for adults following a diagnosis of autism meaning that they are left on their own to interpret what that means with little idea of where to turn to for much needed support. I am therefore delighted that we have been successful in receiving this award from Inspiring Scotland. “We have partnered with Autistic Knowledge Development to develop an

incredible programme of free to access support for autistic adults across Scotland. The programme will allow participants to deepen their understanding as to what their diagnosis means as well as to connect and share strategies with each other. It will also provide a safe space for participants to share with each other the challenges as well as the joys of being autistic. We hope that these connections will last beyond the lifetime of the programme.” Highland based, Lochaber Hope, will deliver online workshops on Autism, ADHD and a Neurodivergent Group for Women and Non-Binary People in the area. Executive Manager at Lochaber Hope, Alyson Smith said: “We are delighted to have received funds from Autistic Adults Support Fund, this will allow us to support the increasing number of adults whose needs are specific and are

currently not being met in our community, we can help change the quality of the lives of people living with autism.” Erica Judge, Director of Funds at Inspiring Scotland said: “We received a large number of high-quality applications to this Autistic Adult Support Fund demonstrating the need for this work and the commitment from organisations across Scotland to provide what we know can be life changing support. “We are looking forward to working alongside and supporting the 16 charities selected to provide vital support to autistic people and their families and carers to better understand what their diagnosis means for them and help ensure they are able to live happy and healthy lives.” Find out more about the Autistic Adult Support Fund.
