Just Transition PB Fund Applications Close September 4th 2023 There's just over 1 month for community groups and third sector organisations across the North East and Moray to apply for support for their eco friendly projects! The Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund is back for a second year with £1.5 million of funding available to support green community projects in the Northeast and Moray. Grassroots community organisations can apply for up to £50,000 for capital funding for green projects that address climate change and improve sustainability as we work towards net-zero. Once the proposals are in, these projects will then be put to a public vote where voters will decide which projects they believe will offer the greatest contribution towards a carbon-neutral region. This capital funding is for the purchase of tangible assets, such as buildings, equipment, and land with some previous recipients of the fund purchasing amongst other things, electric vehicles, charging points, solar-powered mowers, insulation, reusable equipment, and a solar lighting power bank.

Year 1 fund recipient: Aberdeen Science Centre After a successful public vote, Aberdeen Science Centre received £39,500 to purchase an electric vehicle to kit-out and use as an interactive Climate Change exhibit. Designed with mobility in mind, the van will further Aberdeen Science Centre’s reach by providing STEM-related education to the wider community. This is Aberdeen Science Centre’s first company vehicle and, with it being fully electric, contributes towards their aim of becoming a more sustainable organisation. By purchasing this electric van, the charity have reduced their carbon footprint, helping towards Scotland’s net zero goal. Steph McCann, Fundraising Manager, encourages anyone thinking of applying for the fund to do so. Is it time to start closing our food banks? asks Alasdair Ross - Policy & Consultations Officer at ACVO TSI and Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action
F
irstly let me say that the huge amount of work done by food banks to support people is overwhelming in its generosity.
However, I think we have reached a point where food banks have become so normalised that they are now a distraction from the fundamental problem facing huge numbers of people in our city – they don’t have enough money in their pockets to live healthy, happy, fulfilling lives. That is a shameful situation for 21st Century Aberdeen. It is the natural reaction to solve the first problem that is directly in front of us and so when we talk about poverty we think about basic provisions such as food. When we then think about poverty in the context of food, the natural response is understandably, that if people are hungry we should feed them. As a result, food provision has become a widespread, core activity of the third
sector consuming vast amounts of time and money. Food banks have become a normal part of our society. We hear about them in the news almost daily, we see collection points in our supermarkets and community centres.
We are told they are a good thing and we celebrate their success. As a society we are becoming desensitised, they have become part of life and we expect them to exist. At ACVO we have heard of employers (including in the public sector) referring their staff to food banks when they ask for help. We know that some people entitled to social security payments are told it is not enough to live on and are given a list of food banks to contact. They are in effect, being used as tools to mask low income by some organisations.
At a time when demand for third sector services is at an all-time high, resources are down across the board. The current situation is rapidly becoming unsustainable and our team at ACVO are worried that some will not be able to continue if we cannot come to a viable long-term solution to help people. Think about the vast resources required to run a food bank, the buying and collecting of food, the preparation of packages, the transport, the storage requirements, the referral procedures, the staffing of the facility, the overhead costs, the co-ordination time to name a few. There are more than 30 emergency food projects operating in the city that we know of, and there will be others. There is no dignity in queuing for food in this way and the stigma attached to asking for help, even in a crisis, is enormous. In addition to those barriers to accessing help, we need to find a sustainable way for the third sector

The Hearings for Children redesign report calls for historic reform to the Children’s Hearings System in Scotland In May 2023, The Promise Scotland published an important report calling for the redesign of the Children’s Hearing System in Scotland. If you haven’t had time to read this yet, please do as it really highlights some important requests for change that could be transformation for our children, young people and their families when involved with the Hearing System. The recommendations drafted from the report are based on feedback from the real voices of those children and young people who have experienced our current system and those of relevant experts who are calling for change. One quote highlighted at the beginning of the report from “Our Hearings Our Voice” an independent board for children & young people across Scotland between the ages of 8 and 18 who have experience of the Children’s

Remember, The Promise is a time limited project with everyone working themselves out of a job by 2030 having ensured they #keepthepromise and delivered on its aims. The new plan will be launched in Spring 2024 and Fiona and her team are asking for your thoughts. The letter provides a bit more background information and the chance to give your views. Pop-Up School Uniform shops will support children's learning, say AberNecessities An Aberdeen charity has teamed up with a supermarket giant to set up free school uniform Pop-Up shops at twelve primary schools across Aberdeen city and shire.
I
n response to a significant increase in applications from families in need of support for their children,
AberNecessities and Asda have joined forces to supply primary school uniforms in various sizes to twelve north-east schools. This collaborative effort has ensured uniforms are available to assist over 1,500 children in need. AberNecessities has launched the trial initiative this month that will continue throughout the summer, with the aim of ensuring that no child goes without necessary school uniforms. The PopUp shops will allow parents facing financial hardship to access the clothing their children require. Seaton School head teacher, Ashley Verling, said: “Being able to offer our families a uniform at Seaton has been a huge positive. It enables them to feel part of the school community, alleviates some financial stress from parents and carers and sets a good precedent moving forwards.”

AberNecessities and Asda join forces to set up free school uniform Pop-Up shops at twelve north-east primary schools.
AberNecessities founder and specialist teacher Danielle Flecher-Horn was inspired to start the charity having witnessed children arriving at school without proper shoes and unkempt clothing. She said, “We have been told about children coming to school in their parents’ shoes as they didn’t have footwear of their own, which of course causes discomfort and embarrassment. We also hear of children wearing dirty uniforms with holes which, understandably, means they shy away from playing with their peers out of fear of being bullied. “We all know the cost-of-living crisis is biting hard, making school uniforms an unattainable luxury for families experiencing extreme poverty within our community. “On behalf of all the children and families, we extend our heartfelt gratitude to Asda for their immensely generous donation, which will allow over 1,500 local children to arrive at school with a sense of pride,

Tenant and social landlord group celebrates award win A local tenant and social landlord group celebrated success at the Tenant Participation Advisory Service National Good Practice Awards ceremony in Clydebank.

orth East Tenants, Residents and Landlords Together (NETRALT)
won Best Practice in Developing Communities award for their groundbreaking work involving young people from across Aberdeen. NETRALT embarked upon an innovative city-wide project to engage and collaborate with young people via research aimed at exploring youth knowledge and aspirations. The project involved staff from Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeen Foyer, Castlehill, Grampian and Langstane Housing Associations, as well as young people from Aberdeen City Youth Council (now Aberdeen City Youth Movement)

60-year-old raises funds for the Archie Foundation after taking 2 million steps and climbing 85,000m Turning 60 is a major milestone and one that is often marked with a meal out or a weekend away with friends, but Katy Boocock is not your average 60-year-old.

as well as her kayak and bike. “From transporting kit in awful weather to supplying delicious cakes, sandwiches and meals, and providing encouragement and making me laugh, my lovely friends and amazing husband have been superstars. “It’s been a privilege to see so much of Scotland and to get to do it under my own steam. I particularly loved the paddle from Kinloch Hourn to Knoydart, as well as camping high in the Cairngorms and Glen Strathfarrar. “Of course there were tough times, like epic wind and hail on the Glen Affric hills, rainy days which had me soaked to the skin, but I wouldn’t change it, not one bit.”

Paula Cormack, chief executive of the Archie Foundation, said: “Many people are aware of The Archie Foundation because of the large scale, capital fundraising appeals that we do – we are currently raising money for a £2million campaign in support of the Baird Family Hospital. “These appeals are extremely important and will make a substantial difference to children and families throughout North Scotland. However, the day-to-day support that we can provide to children and their families because
of more general fundraising should not be underestimated. “There is huge benefit in being able to help children and their families by providing much needed emotional or financial support during anxious times, as well as bereavement support when it is sadly needed. People like Katy have an impact which is much bigger than you can imagine.
“The funds she has raised will be used to support local sick children and their families when and where they need it most. This could be funding travel to and from hospital for families who, thanks to the cost of living crisis, are having to make the stark choice between putting fuel in the car to take their child to an appointment or putting food on the table. “We also need to ensure families know where to turn when they need support. As well as providing much needed funds, Katy’s challenge will also have raised awareness of The Archie Foundation and the support and services we provide to children and their families in North Scotland. “Katy’s efforts could mean that someone who needs support from The Archie Foundation now knows about us and the work we do.” Katy's JustGiving total is currently sitting at just over £2,000. We Too! and Codona’s celebrate success of their First Dream Night
Local Charity We Too! and Codona’s Amusement Park continued their partnership with the region's very first Dream Night on Sunday 2nd July.
T
he teams behind the project capped the number of guests attending and operated the outdoor Amusement Park at 10% capacity to allow for a quieter and relaxed environment. With no music playing and without crowds, the evening was specifically designed for children with disabilities and their families. Guests were able to enjoy all the outdoor rides and go karts in the exclusive session, which also saw some families experiencing the complex for the first time.
"We are absolutely thrilled about the success of Dream Night, as a first for both We Too! and Codona's, we are excited for our future plans and can't wait to build further on what we've achieved together so far." said Phionna McInnes of We Too! Sarah Yuile who attended the event with her family explained, “My son had an amazing, stress-free evening and got to try loads of different rides he otherwise wouldn’t have been able to wait for, or handle being amongst large crowds.” The evening allowed We Too! to

Barnardo’s Aberdeen Young Carers Service supports Young Carers in Aberdeen City to live a happy and fulfilled life alongside caring. With at least 2,000 Young Carers in Aberdeen City who would benefit from support, the charity’s aim is to develop the service to support Young Carers with individual identified needs, reduce the impact of caring, allow them to receive a short break from caring, help to reduce social isolation, improve wellbeing and increase their resilience. Currently, Barnardo’s Aberdeen Young Carers Service offers one-to-one intensive support, group opportunities, befriending opportunities, family support, financial support and signposting alongside many other services. Although the charity runs group opportunities during term time, the holiday group programmes see the highest level of need to due to the lack of in-school respite options for Young Carers.
At present, the charity run their Summer 2023 group programme for all ages – including both primary and academy Young Carers. Some of the activities taking place over this years' summer holidays include: Monday craft groups, Tubing, community gardening and cooking with CFINE, 3d printing, a family sports day and a private viewing at Cineworld for the families. These group activities hope to provide Young Carers with respite from their caring responsibilities and home conditions – as well as having a positive impact on their own health and wellbeing, their socialisation with peers, and developing on their skills and interests. On Monday 17th July, ACVO were kindly invited along to the morning craft group, which saw primary school-aged Young Carers decorate plant pots and create wind chimes with cups and beads. The session was engaging, creative and offered respite to the Young Carers for a couple of hours.

One Young Carer in attendance, Shahed, shares her thoughts on the craft group session: “I like the Barnardo's activities during the summer holidays. They are fun and I think that there’s lots of good ideas of activities. “Today we got to decorate our plant pots which we get to take home – this is a nice reminder of the time spent at the activity session. I put soil and water into the pot so I can’t wait to find out what flower will grow out of it!” As the only commissioned service within Aberdeen City to offer support directly to Young Carers, the charity has witnessed first-hand how important the Young Carers service and group opportunities are to them, such as the Monday craft group. Shahed continues: “Before I come along to the group activities, I feel excited. When I'm here, I enjoy my time very much and I don’t feel bored. It’s fun to hang around the other kids. I don't feel left out and I feel comfortable with everyone.” As a Young Carer, Shahed encourages others who may be experiencing the same circumstances as her to join in: “I have been with Barnardo's for over a month now and I would recommend any of the Barnardo's Young Carers to come along to the summer holiday sessions. I recommend going along rather than staying at home because it's fun. If you don't think it's fun, we will make it fun for you!”

Volunteer to make a difference with VoiceAbility
D
o you want to support people in your local community to feel empowered? Could you offer a few hours a week to help people access benefits and other services? VoiceAbility provides benefits advocacy across Scotland, supporting people to access Social Security Scotland benefits. This support is for disabled people, and people applying on behalf of family or people they care for. The service advocates explain the process, help people understand the paperwork, and support with applications, appeals and redeterminations.
How you can help You could support people by raising awareness in your local area, networking and supporting at events. These roles are ideal for people who already have a connection to their community, or would like to build one. Volunteers also support individuals directly, with general advocacy and admin tasks. If you have an interest or background in human rights, or health, care and wellbeing, this would be a good fit for you – but VoiceAbility care more about your values than your knowledge and experience.

Multiple Sclerosis Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire Group Re-established National charity MS Society is restoring their Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire service and seek volunteers to support the group. MS Society is delighted to advise that the Aberdeen & Aberdeenshire MS Group is up and running again. The Group is currently working on increasing the number of volunteers and developing their Forward Plan as to how best they can support the MS community in the region. They are currently providing access to a Technogym and are working on providing physiotherapy sessions and more over the coming months.

Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund Scottish Government | ACVO TSI | NESCAN HUB TThe Just Transition Participatory Budgeting Fund aims to empower the residents of Aberdeenshire, Aberdeen and Moray by giving you a crucial role in shaping our just transition to a net zero future in the North East of Scotland. £1.5million is available (£500,000 for each region) to support local grassroots green projects from third sector organisations and community groups in the North East and Moray. The Fund is an opportunity for communities to put forward projects that match local needs and priorities and will enable us to create a greener region with residents invited to have the final say over which initiatives are funded through a public vote. ACVO TSI, Aberdeenshire Voluntary Action, TSI Moray, NESCAN Hub, Money for Moray and Scottish Community Development Centre (SCDC) are working in partnership to deliver the fund and will be actively engaging with everyone in the region to contribute ideas and be an active part in determining the discussion over community priorities in in relation to our just transition to net zero.

Big Hop Art Sculpture Trail Volunteers Clan Cancer Support Clan Cancer Support has great volunteer opportunities to help volunteer as part of this year’s exciting Big Hop art sculpture trail. Social Impact Investment innovation to serve the Aberdeen Third Sector Ian Marr (CEO of The Growth Partnership) has over 30 years experience engaging with the Public, Private and Third Sectors to ensure the most efficient and effective delivery of services to the most vulnerable members of our community. In the current environment we understand that everyone in the Third Sector is experiencing immense pressure on resources whilst trying to meet increasing demand. Caught in this situation of swimming against a strong tide, it can be genuinely hard to get your head up for some air and to consider new opportunities in financing services. The temptation is often to keep pushing the existing system harder in an attempt to achieve more. Working with Maggie, Claire and the team at ACVO we would like to give you the chance ‘to get your head up and get some air’. Mel’s Union Street Mile (part of the GEF Safari Series 2023)
Aberdeen Mela 2023 One World Day
The GEF Safari Series, licensed by Scottish Athletics, gives runners the chance to compete over 3 different distances whilst also receiving a unique Kenyan safari animal medal at each event.
The Aberdeen Mela 2023 is set to be a spectacular celebration of cultural diversity that highlights the rich tapestry of communities in the North East of Scotland. The aim of the event is to promote greater understanding and awareness of different cultures, while showcasing the unique vibrancy of Aberdeen.
Races start from 10.30am with Primary P3-7, followed by the Secondary S1-6s at 10.40am and finally the Adults race taking place at 10.50am. Due to the tight time available due to road closures and the Celebrate Aberdeen Parade starting at 11am, entrants must be able to complete 1 mile in under 12 minutes. Also due to the tight schedule we are unfortunately not able to offer races on the day for children P2 and below. Entries now open (entries will close 2 weeks before race date). Anyone unable to race on the day can do so virtually and submit their time of their run before the 26th of August to info@gathimbaedwardsfoundation.org.
There's something for everyone at this year's Mela, with a packed program of events that caters to all ages. Attendees can look forward to an array of live music performances from talented artists, as well as captivating dances and other culturally significant acts. In addition to the live entertainment, visitors can explore an extensive selection of food stalls stocked with delicacies from around the world. From spicy curries to sweet treats, street food lovers won't be able to resist the mouthwatering offerings. Interactive workshops will be available, designed to give visitors a deeper understanding of cultural practices and customs. This year's event is not to be missed!

Middlefield Community Project is a voluntary organisation with charitable status. Our main aim is to provide community services, for the local communities. Our area has expanded to incorporate Middlefield, Heathryfold, Marchburn and part of the Cummings park area. We have well established services which include a cafe, adult learning, nurseries, under 11’s work, youth work, parent & toddlers, bike loan scheme and support to local people. Early Years Play Worker – part time 3 hours per week on Friday mornings, plus an additional 12 hours per year for planning; support and supervision; appraisal; and training. Home-Start Aberdeen is one of Aberdeen’s leading family support charities, supporting around 200 families with young children (under 5) every year across the city. We are excited to be recruiting an Early Years Play Worker to join our small team to assist with the delivery of our wellestablished Rising Stars family group. We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic individual, who is passionate about the importance of play in children’s early development. You will be an excellent communicator and a good team player. Experience of working with families with young children is essential (paid or voluntary). This post is funded by Children in Need and is offered on a part time basis until October 2024. Any extension will be subject to funding. The post is subject to a PVG check at enhanced level. Purposes of the job: • To support the planning and delivery of Home-Start Aberdeen’s Rising Stars family group • To take a strength-based and family centred approach at all times with the aim of increasing parents’ knowledge, skills and confidence, and achieving positive outcomes for children Main Responsibilities: Supporting Delivery of Rising Stars Sessions: • Resource and set up the group activity before session starts, as directed by Group Coordinator • Contribute to the delivery of sessions as directed by Group Coordinator, leading core activities (eg story, song, craft) at each session • Be aware of the aims of each session and actively contribute to ensure these are achieved as directed by Group Coordinator • Take responsibility for organising additional resources or different venues for sessions, as agreed with the Group Coordinator • Sign off risk assessment prior to the start of every session.
