We are just past the halfway point of summer. Many of us are balancing well deserved vacations and the frenzy to prepare for a new academic year. With this in mind, I hope you will find this edition of the Region IV newsletter helpful and inspiring.

My last few months as your regional director have been focused on our upcoming Regional Conference at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Mark your calendars for October 26-28! In June, I visited Gonzaga with our Regional Conference Coordinator Donnyale (Doni) Ambrosine where we explored their new student union, the John J. Hemmingson Center, where our Regional Conference will be held. This new facility is the perfect location and I guarantee all attendees will thoroughly enjoy exploring the union and the beautiful Gonzaga University grounds.

the Association to be more flexible and responsive to created a list of actions to support the annual priorities, including supporting the research agenda and improving member profiles and rosters during regional conferences; utilizing regional data in goal setting; implementing volunteer check-in tools; sharing relevant information with senior student affairs officers; and collecting campus resources related to active dialogue.

It has been a productive few months and your Regional Leadership Team hasn’t missed a beat. We hope your vacations and breaks are spectacular and your preparations for the upcoming year are smooth. Stay tuned for more, Region IV!

Member Spotlight: Gonzaga University with Chuck and Carissa!

Griffin: As many of you know, the Regional Conference will be held at Gonzaga University this October 26-28. Today we’re taking time with Director Chuck Faulkinberry (ACUI member since 2014) and Building Coordinator Carissa Outen (ACUI member since 2016) to learn a little bit about the John J. Hemmingson Center, Gonzaga University, and Spokane, Washington. So Chuck and Carissa, tell me about the facility!

Chuck & Carissa: The John J. Hemmingson Center, aka “Hemmingson,” opened in 2015 and is named after a key donor in the project. The facility consists of 12 constituents and vendors, operates on geothermal energy for our HVAC, and also acts as a teaching building that highlights sustainability and engineering features.

Griffin: What does it take to staff and operate a building like this?

Chuck & Carissa: Well, the GUEST department employs around 80 staff members in total (both professional and student staff). This makes us one of the largest departments on campus as well as one of the largest student employers. The vendors and constituents we house employ more than 400 additional student and professional staff.

Griffin: Little known fact, but I visited this building right after it opened and thought it was super cool.

What are some interesting facts that you’d like visitors to know?

Chuck & Carissa: We’re a LEED Gold Certified building and most of our building materials were sourced within 500 miles of Spokane (including labor). We’re also the first university in the nation to have a hydroponic greenhouse connected to our dining facility. We also have an apiary (bees!) on-site and our rotunda design allows us to maximize natural sunlight throughout the building all year long. Also, in total there are more than 10,000 miles worth of wire and fiber in our building to make us fully functional.

Continued from page 3 Griffin: So, outside of Hemmingson, what else should folks check out when on Gonzaga’s campus?

Chuck & Carissa: The Bing Crosby House (childhood home of Bing Crosby, himself) is located on our campus. Also, you can’t miss the Hand of Christ sculpture, the organ in St. Aloysius church—the biggest west of the Mississippi, our Chihuly glass art exhibit in the Jundt Art Museum, and the Centennial Trail along the Spokane River which traces the southern border of our campus.

Griffin: How about off-campus destinations in Spokane?

Chuck & Carissa: Riverfront Park was the site of the 1974 World’s Fair. Over the last two years it has gone through some extensive renovations to the art, monuments, and food. The Historic Davenport Hotel is gorgeous and has been standing since the early 1900s. And of course, the Bing Crosby Theater, which houses a number of Bing’s artifacts and history.

Griffin: To wrap things up, tell me a little bit about hosting the Regional Conference and why others should consider hosting a future conference.

Chuck & Carissa: This is an incredible opportunity to showcase our space, our department, our university, and our city. It’s never a bad idea to do that! Additionally, we have found that it is creating incredible opportunities for our professional and student staff. They are learning, growing, and establishing networks all over the world. Hosting a Regional Conference allows undeniable development for your institution and all that fall under it.

Region IV Leadership Profile: Erin Dewese Hi Region IV! My name is Erin Dewese and I am the assistant director for cultural programs in the Center for Student Involvement at CU Boulder. I have been involved with ACUI since 2013 when I volunteered at my first ACUI Annual Conference in St. Louis, Missouri. It was during that conference that I learned how great an opportunity it was for me to be an ACUI member. I currently serve as the educational programs coordinator on the Regional Leadership Team and this fall will transition to one of two communication coordinator roles for Region IV. I have too many memories from my involvement with

STUDENT EMPLOYEE SUPERVISION

Region IV recently asked members about their experience with ACUI Badges. Here's what one of our members had to say: "I always knew there was a difference in how [students] should be managed/trained/mentored and this [Student Employee Supervision] course has really taught me some great points in not only embracing those differences, but also how to use them to strengthen the experience.

A good deal of the focus of the course has been to treat the student job as a real job and prepare them for their future employment.
