DIRECTOR’S NOTE
Romeo and Juliet is the ultimate romantic tragedy. I think of rapturous music and lofty language. We luxuriate in the tears. We thrill to the spark of fresh love. How do we reconcile our craving of this kind of entertainment with a value of the need for basic support, decency, and boring peaceful normalcy?
What excites me about directing this play is the strikingly modern and relatable family and community dysfunctions. The calcified feuding of the Capulets/Montagues resonates with American politics of May 2024.
Just as Romeo tries to resist the gravitational pull toward apathy and violence, Tybalt can’t bear to experience the world any other way. This is the way of Verona since before both of them were born. How is violence handed down and internalized with each new generation? Who will finally break the chain and how?
In a world of bloodshed, where lies love? In our communities, who do we turn to for support? Mom? Best friend? Family priest Do we always get that support? What if there’s neglect, or they love us deeply and still steer us wrong? How do our most important relationships affect our resilience in the face of capital T Trauma?
The elder Capulets and Montages have f**ked around and the next generation is finding out. The collateral damage of their brawling and passion is the very love we thought we came to see.
We hope you will come along with us for our perhaps a bit less romantic investigation of the most famous “love story” in the world.
