Interest rates on hold for third month in a row!

Inflation has slowed to its lowest level in a year.

Hi everyone,

There’s more good news for homeowners. This week, outgoing RBA Governor Phillip Lowe has announced the official cash rate of 4.1% will be kept on hold.

The announcement is what most economic forecasters predicted. Lowe said the board was awaiting more economic data to assess whether more needed to be done to speed up the falling rate of inflation. “Interest rates have been increased by four percentage points since May last year. The higher interest rates are working to establish a more sustainable balance between supply and demand in the economy and will continue to do so,” he said.

Unfortunately, what many recent homebuyers will remember is what the controversial Governor said in September 2022 when he suggested there’d be no rate rises until 2024 (or words to that affect), and which he apologised for some time later (but I digress).

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the consumer price index (CPI) which measures inflation, rose by 4.9% over the last year – the lowest the measure has been at since February 2022.

So what does all this mean for our local real estate? Well, being the half full kind of person I am, I think it’s onwards and upwards. Perth property prices are predicted to keep rising in the next six to 12 months, even factoring in another potential interest rate rise. We’re seeing strong competition amongst homebuyers, and with records being set for the shortest time on the market since data has been collected, this is putting pressure on property prices.
