A Note From the Artistic Director:

Welcome to Fiddler on the Roof.

As with much of my work as a director, this production will not follow the “usual or expected” staging of this beloved musical. My concept for Fiddler on the Roof centers on the idea of bearing witness. Raised Jewish, I was taught to “always remember, never forget.” While this phrase is deeply tied to the Holocaust, its broader significance is a reminder that when we fail to acknowledge and learn from past atrocities, history has a way of repeating itself. Bearing witness — acknowledging, remembering, and sharing stories — is essential to understanding the past and creating meaningful change.

This idea shapes my approach to this production. Actors will remain on stage throughout the majority of the show, even when not featured in a specific scene. This artistic choice highlights the interconnectedness of the characters’ lives and their shared experiences, reflecting the communal struggles and triumphs of Anatevka. By keeping the cast visible, we emphasize that each individual’s story is part of a larger narrative. The village’s collective memory and resilience take center stage, amplifying the universal themes of tradition, change, and survival. My hope is that this artistic choice also invites the audience to engage more deeply, fostering a sense of solidarity and shared responsibility for these timeless stories.

For me, Fiddler on the Roof is deeply personal. My connection to Jewish culture runs deep—from my family’s escape from the pogroms in Russia, to the cherished rituals of Shabbat dinners, to the enduring legacy of “always remember, never forget.” These traditions and memories inspire my work and my commitment to honoring the resilience and history of the people you are about to meet.

I hope this production moves you as much as it has moved all of us who have brought it to life. Thank you for bearing witness to this powerful story of community, change, and tradition!

Key Terms & Concepts:

In Fiddler on the Roof, the story is deeply rooted in Jewish traditions, history, and culture. To help all audience members fully appreciate the significance of these references, I am including a glossary of key terms and concepts in this Playbill (as well as in the pre-show projections). While some may already be familiar with these terms and ideas, others may find them new and enlightening.

These definitions provide context for the events and customs depicted in the show, enhancing the audience’s understanding of the challenges faced by the characters, their traditions, and the historical forces that shaped their lives. It is my hope that this added layer of insight will allow for a richer, more meaningful experience of this beloved musical. – Daniel C. Levine

Pogrom: An organized massacre of Jewish people in Russia and Eastern Europe in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Shtetl: A Yiddish term for the small towns with predominantly Jewish populations which existed in Russian and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust.

Russia in 1905 (the year Fiddler on the Roof takes place): Jews were required to live in “The Pale of Settlement”- a designated region in western Russia. Within the Pale, Jews faced severe restrictions on where they could reside and work. Life in this region was often harsh, marked by severe overcrowding and poverty. The Jewish population endured waves of state-sanctioned and violent pogroms that were often used to deflect attention from broader social and political issues. Authorities turned a blind eye to these atrocities and were complicit in the violence. Antisemitic policies were deeply entrenched, with Jews subjected to discriminatory laws that reinforced their marginalized status. As political tensions grew, antisemitic violence intensified, with Jewish communities being scapegoated for the empire’s wider social and political problems.

The“Protocols of the Elders of Zion”: This notorious antisemitic forgery, which purports to describe a Jewish plan for global domination, was published in Russia during Czar Nicholas II’s government (during the time that Fiddler on the Roof takes place). The document was used to stoke antisemitic sentiment in Russia and later spread worldwide.

Anatevka: A fictional village that serves as the setting for the musical Fiddler on the Roof. Anatevka represents the close-knit Jewish communities of Eastern Europe, where life was often difficult due to poverty, persecution, and the constant threat of pogroms.

Settlements of Siberia: A vast and remote region of the Russian Empire that was used as a place of exile for those deemed undesirable by the Russian authorities. Exile to Siberia was a common punishment for Jews. The conditions in Siberia were harsh, with severe cold, isolation, and primitive living conditions, making life extremely difficult for those sent there. Jews exiled in Siberia were often forced to live in isolated settlements and work in labor camps under brutal conditions.

Shabbat (or the Sabbath): A weekly day of rest and spiritual reflection that begins at sundown on Friday and ends at nightfall on Saturday. It is a time for Jews to gather with family, and engage in prayer, meals, and the lighting of candles, all in observance of the commandment to rest on the seventh day, as God did after creating the world.

Interpreting Dreams: In Orthodox Judaism, the interpretation of dreams holds a significant place, rooted in both religious texts and traditional beliefs. Dreams are often seen as a potential channel of divine communication.

The Significance of Animals in Dreams: Animals in dreams can have particular significance, depending on the animal, its behavior, and the context of the dream. Animals hold a multi-faceted significance in Jewish thought, encompassing symbolic meanings derived from sacred texts, mystical insights, and personal experiences.

Kippah: A small, round skullcap traditionally worn by Jewish men to express Jewish identity and commitment to religious practices.

Yente: A Yiddish term or name that refers to a gossip or busybody, often a woman who is involved in the affairs of others, particularly in matchmaking.

Arranged Marriages: In Orthodox Jewish communities, arranged marriages are a traditional practice where marriage matches are facilitated by matchmakers or through family and community connections. The custom is rooted in the value placed on marriage as a central aspect of Jewish life and the belief that a good match is key to building a stable, religiously observant family.

Breaking of the Glass at a Jewish Wedding: Symbolizes the fragility of the relationship and reminds us that we must treat our relationship with special care.

Chuppah: A canopy under which a Jewish wedding ceremony takes place. It symbolizes the couple’s new home together, open to family and guests as a place of warmth and hospitality. The structure is usually supported by four poles and can be made of a simple cloth, a tallit (prayer shawl), or more elaborate materials. The open sides of the chuppah represent the couple’s openness to their community and the blessings of those present.

Hakafot: In a Jewish wedding, the bride traditionally circles the groom under the chuppah (wedding canopy). This circling movement represents the creation of a sacred, protective space and signifies the intertwining of their lives and their unity as a married couple.

Tallis: A fringed prayer shawl worn by Jewish men and some women during prayer. It is typically made of wool, cotton, or silk. In some communities, a tallis is also worn by a groom during his wedding ceremony or draped over the chuppah as a symbol of faith and devotion.

Tzitzit: Specially knotted ritual tassels worn by observant Jews. The practice is based on a verse from the Book of Numbers, where God instructs the Israelites to attach fringes to the corners of their garments to remind them to lead a life in accordance with the Jewish laws.

Emigration: In the early 1900’s, Jewish Russian immigrants faced significant challenges as they emigrated to the United States. Fleeing poverty, political unrest, and persecution, particularly for Jewish communities facing pogroms, they embarked on arduous journeys often through Europe before crossing the Atlantic. Upon arrival, many entered through Ellis Island, where they underwent rigorous medical and legal inspections. Once in the U.S., they settled in crowded urban neighborhoods, often in New York City, Boston, and Chicago where they worked in low-paying jobs in factories or as peddlers. Despite the hardships, these immigrants sought better economic opportunities and freedom from oppression, gradually building new lives.

His plays are Enter Laughing, Before the Dawn, and Mrs. Gibbons’ Boys. Stein grew up in the Bronx and first became a social worker while pursuing writing on the side. He began his career in TV and radio, writing for The Sid Caesar Show, Your Show of Shows, Henry Morgan Show, and many others, and for personalities including Tallulah Bankhead, Phil Silvers, Jackie Gleason and Zero Mostel. On Broadway he made his debut contributing to the theatrical revues Lend an Ear (featuring Carol Channing) and

WHO’S WHO

Alive and Kicking. He wrote the screenplays of Enter Laughing and Fiddler on the Roof, for which he won the Screen Writers Guild Award. In 2008, he was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame.

JERRY BOCK (Composer) was born in New Haven, Connecticut on November 23rd, 1928. That was his first out-of-town tryout. Thirty years later, he and Sheldon Harnick gave birth to The Body Beautiful in Philadelphia. That was his fourth out-of-town tryout. In between was Catch a Star, a fleeting revue that, according to critic Walter Kerr, posed the question; “What do you call something between a flop and a smash?” Kerr’s answer? “A flash”. Next, Jule Styne and Tommy Valano midwifed Bock, Larry Holofcener and George Weiss into birthing Mr. Wonderful starring Sammy Davis Jr. The title song and “Too Close For Comfort” are still active off springs. Bock and Harnick’s celebrated collaboration yielded five scores in seven years. The Body Beautiful, Fiorello! (winner of Broadway’s triple crown: The Tony Award, The New York Critics’ Circle Award and The Pulitzer Prize in drama, the fourth musical to do so). Tenderloin, She Loves Me - (winner of Variety’s poll of critics as best musical, citing Bock and Harnick as best composer and lyricist). Fiddler on the Roof - (nine Tonys, notably the citation for best musical of the year), The Apple Tree and The Rothschilds. In addition to the 1989 silver anniversary production of Fiddler (from which a major excerpt was featured in Jerome Robbins’ Broadway), a highly esteemed revival of The Rothschilds enjoyed a successful run Off-Broadway the following year. Since then, Bock and Harnick were triply honored by being inducted into the Theater Hall of Fame, receiving the Johnny Mercer Award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Spirit of American Creativity Award from the Foundation for a Creative America. But the “award” that Bock held near and dear was the honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Wisconsin. It was there that he met his wife Patti, and it was there that he decided to be a composer. Mr. Bock was a member of a number of professional guilds and associations, among which the BMI Foundation, Inc. was a membership he relished. As

for Patti, his wife, George, their son and Portia, their daughter, Bock confessed they were his longest running hit. Jerry Bock passed away in 2010.

SHELDON HARNICK (Lyricist) Sheldon Harnick’s career began in the 1950s with songs in revues (e.g., “The Boston Beguine,” “The Merry Little Minuet”). With Jerry Bock he created a number of memorable musicals, including Fiorello! (Tony Award, Pulitzer Prize), Tenderloin, She Loves Me (Grammy), Fiddler on the Roof (Tony), The Apple Tree, and The Rothschilds (subsequently revised as Rothschild & Sons). Other collaborations: Rex (Richard Rodgers), A Christmas Carol (Michel Legrand), A Wonderful Life (Joe Raposo), The Phantom Tollbooth (Arnold Black, Norton Juster), and The Audition (Marvin Hamlisch). He wrote three musicals himself: Dragons, A Doctor in Spite of Himself, and Malpractice Makes Perfect

JEROME ROBBINS (Original Director and Choreographer) is world renowned for his work as a choreographer of ballets as well as his work as a director and choreographer in theater, movies and television. His first ballet, Fancy Free (1944) for ABT, still in many repertoires, celebrated its fiftieth birthday on April 18, 1994. While embarking on his career in the theater, Mr. Robbins simultaneously created ballets for New York City Ballet, which he joined in 1949, and became an Associate Artistic Director with George Balanchine. Mr. Robbins has directed for television and film as well, with his co-direction and choreography of West Side Story winning him two Academy Awards. After his Broadway triumph with Fiddler On the Roof in 1964, Mr. Robbins continued creating ballets for New York City Ballet. He shared the position of Ballet-Masterin-Chief with Peter Martins until 1989. He has created more than 60 ballets, including Afternoon of a Faun (1953), The Concert (1956), Les Noces (1965), Dances At a Gathering (1969), In the Night (1970), In G Major (1975), Other Danc-

Before becoming a director, Mr. Prince’s productions included The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, West Side Story, Fiddler On The

Roof and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum. He served as a trustee for the New York Public Library and on the National Council of the Arts of the NEA. One of the precious few 18th/19th century shingle style colonial revival estates remaining in Fairfield County. Dating back to 1750, the original pre-revolutionary war home captivated the attention of prominent NYC banker, George Haven, who purchased the home in 1890 & expanded it significantly including a glorious 50' ballroom designed by Elsie de Wolfe. After $2M of extensive & thoughtful updates over the past decade, Homewood is unparalleled in its historical detail & state of the art features. Total 12,853sf on 3 levels with 20+ rooms, elevator, 13 original fireplaces, 8+ bedrooms, 7/2 bths; pool house w/kitchen, full bath, & changing rooms; heated gunite pool & spa; 3 carriage style garages w/porte-cochere; multiple porches/terraces; set on 3.22 manicured & level acres. Highest attention to detail: front to back Great Hall with ceremonial mahogany staircases; chef's kitchen/butler's pantry; primary suite with two sumptuous bathrooms; plus vast 3rd floor with additional bedrooms, artist studios, and cook book library. Premier Silver Spring location, just moments to the NY border, and only 54 miles to Midtown. $4,795,000
