#cleanedmyroute
Have you that favorite running/walking route that you have seen over time had an increase in rubbish or flytipping issues? Well, you are not alone as there has been a sharp rise in rubbish and flytipping gathering on roadsides both in cities, towns and country roads, we can play our part as runners and walkers by helping to keep the routes, we enjoy free from rubbish and flytipping. As runners and walkers, we see more off the beaten track than most people do, but sadly for most of us, we are looking at rubbish and large flytipping in areas we love to enjoy that walk or run. You may ask how can I help as I just want to enjoy my stroll or run, and I didn't throw the rubbish, etc. Well, that is true but we can play our part and help not just us but our community and kids to see it can be done.
As editor of the magazine and as a runner and a father I have seen the countryside in different eyes now, as I have helped clean our local coastline here in County Down with the local group Love your Lough. I now see rubbish more often as my eyes have been opened more to the issue and when visiting the shoreline with my children we take a bag or two and do our part and then enjoy the rest of the time at the beach after a little cleanup. We all can play our part and help teach our children too as they will see you.
Neruja Srikantharajah After cleaning a running route Photo :Mark Gribbon The Campaign is officially launched from this issue of the magazine and with our good friends at Virtual Run NI , we hope to gather support with your help, not only to raise this issue but to help tackle it too. We hope that all runners / Walkers will help and support this campaign by taking part in 2-minute clean-ups, to help clean our running/walking routes for everyone to enjoy, that's all we ask just 2 mins before, after, or during a run/walk so you can still enjoy your activity. Please support the campaign by taking part in a 2 min clean-up with friends and taking a photo of your clean up and using the hashtag #cleanedmyroute on all social media and by posting them on The Active Runner Free Magazine at www.facebook.com/groups/212786134304369 and Virtual Run NI - Community Group at www.facebook.com/groups/577627819247313 We would like to also have your photos of your 2 minute clean up in issues of the magazines , so please use our upload form above.
HOW TO HELP How you can help support this campaign towards cleaning our running/walking routes.
1. Organize a clean up with your running club/group or walking group to do a 2 min clean up in your area and please share the photos with us and on your social media pages with our Campaign hashtag #cleanedmyroute
2. Take part in a solo clean up or with friends and do a 2 minute clean up on your route that needs it the most . Please take your bag home with you or put it in the nearest bin on your route. Please also share photos with us Here
4. Not only are you helping clean your area , but building a better stronger community who will support you along with future clean ups.. The younger generation will also take part more because you showed them the way, as someone who takes part in beach cleans I now see it with different eyes , you spot rubbish you never did before.
5. Your safety comes first never clean a busy traffic route , always wear gloves or use a litter picker , never clean at dark periods and only clean what you can at one time . We can play our part in reducing the rubbish on our routes and feel prouder we did our bit.
Thank you to Neruja Srikantharajah for her support and to her husband Mark Gribbon for the great photos
3. If you see larger rubbish like a flytip on your route , please report this to your local council so that it can be taken away and help deter this becoming a bigger problem. Please never engage someone Flytipping your safety comes first

by Marissa Greene The Daily Mile- Making Big Strides By Frank Greally
The former editor of Irish Runner magazine and currently Athletics Ireland's
Ambassador for The Daily Mile.
I would probably never have discovered my talent for running had I been depending on what we learned about health and fitness in the Primary School classroom in Ballyhaunis.
It took the arrival at our town of the charismatic Michael Nestor to provide the structures and incentives to get me started on a lifelong enjoyment of running.
Because I was born prematurely, it took me a long time to develop physically and I was by far the smallest in my class in primary school - too small to make any serious impact on the football field
Michael was, at the time, referred to by many as a blow in to our town. He arrived with his large family and set up a Barber Shop in a premises in the middle of town.
Siena Lacey, right, of St. Brigid's National School, holds the Daily Mile flag as her classmates run during the Daily Mile launch at St. Brigid's National School, Beechpark Lawn, Castleknock in Dublin. Photo by Matt Browne/Sportsfile
He was not long settled in before he set about reviving the boxing club that had been dormant for many years. He then set up an athletics club and encouraged a number of us to discover the joy of running. I remember days when Michael would spin me around in what was then a state-of-the-art barber's swivel chair - all the while telling me that I had lots of running talent and assuring me that if I did the recommended training I could win county, provincial and even national titles.
Minister of State for Sport and the Gaeltacht Jack Chambers TD with 6th class pupils from his former school St. Brigid's National School at the Daily Mile launch at St. Brigid's National School, Beechpark Lawn, Castleknock in Dublin. Photo by Matt Browne/Sportsfile
Michael soon became a mentor and motivator to me and several pals, encouraging us, in sporting terms, to seize the day and follow our dreams. I followed Michael's training advice to the letter back then and a lot of his predictions forme did come true. The one big one that I fell short on was qualifying to run in the Olympic Games. I often think that if I was still being coached by Michael, I might have made the 1972 or ’76 Games - but that's a story for another day. Michael (also known as Mick to his friends) Nestor brought a few of us young lads hope and light and it was a special day in 1972 when the late Padraig Keane and I both made the Irish Senior Men's team for the International Cross Country Championships in Cambridge. England. Michael had predicted that this would happen and by that time Padraig and I had emigrated to Dublin, where I joined Donore Harriers and Padraig signed up with Clonliffe Harriers. Later on, I was lucky to be offered an athletic scholarship to East Tennessee State University, but the happiest running days I ever had were back in Ballyhaunis - a time of lovely innocence, with Michael Nestor spinning me around in the swivel chair and encouraging me to train hard and dream big. I often think of Michael when I am out and about visiting primary schools around Ireland in my role as Athletics Ireland's Ambassador for The Daily Mile. The Daily Mile is free, simple and children love it. When it is implemented properly- according to its core principles - it quickly becomes embedded in a school's culture and is sustainable for years to come. The Daily Mile has its simple origins in Scotland, where in 2012 former primary school headteacher Elaine Wyllie asked a class of 10-year-olds to run around the school playing field.
Elaine describes what happened: “By halfway round most children were exhausted and had to stop. Most of them were completely unfit - and they recognised this themselves. : I then sat down with the class and their teachers to discuss the situation. The children were keen to run around the field for fifteen minutes each day to see what level of fitness they could achieve within a month.
The Daily Mile aims to get primary school children engaged in daily physical activity to improve their mental and physical health. The Daily Mile Irish Ambassador Frank Greally with pupils from Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál during The Daily Mile Launch at Scoil Mhuire Gan Smál, Inchicore, Dublin. Photo by Eóin Noonan/Sportsfile
“The results were remarkable. The children looked better, felt better, and were much fitter. They were averaging five laps of the field in fifteen minutes, which, when measured, turned out to be a mile - so The Daily Mile was born. Despite the name, it's never a set distance. It's always 15 minutes a day with each child walking, jogging, or running at their own pace.
“The Daily Mile - which is now part of the school day in well over one thousand primary schools in Ireland - continues to deliver transitional change in participating children. They are physically fit, more focused, more confident, and more resilient.”
Though many millions have been spent on complicated and expensive initiatives to tackle the problem of physical inactivity, not one of them has worked. No single initiative in the Western World has had any serious impact on childhood obesity; children continue to become overweight, younger. There is a startling statistic that reveals that 20- 25% of children in Ireland today between the ages of two and five are already obese. The Daily Mile has stood the test of time and for the past three years, primary schools all over Ireland have been signing up and making The Daily Mile part of the school day. It's a pure joy for me to be promoting The Daily Mile on behalf of Athletics Ireland. I have six grandchildren now and that gives me an extra spur to bring the message of The Daily Mile to the widest audience possible. We need to encourage our children to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It's vital that we continue to do that. Three years ago I was invited by Physical Therapist Gerard Hartmann to witness The Daily Mile in action in London. I dared to dream that day in London. It occurred to me that The Daily Mile would be perfectly compatible with the Athletics Ireland Fit4Class Programme for secondary schools, and in my mind's eye I saw thousands of Irish youngsters learning and embracing the joy of movement as The Daily Mile rolled out in primary schools across the land. I got the go-ahead to have Athletics Ireland introduce The Daily Mile to primary schools in Ireland and it was one of the most fulfilling trips I have ever made. The first part of my dream has already come true, with over one thousand primary schools signed up. The Daily Mile crusade continues, picking up pace and new schools all the time. Ireland's First Official Plogging Group
"A group of young Irish Runners has teamed up with the mindful running app, Lupa, to start a monthly Beach Cleanup group in Dublin. The idea is for locals to get together for a 5k run on a beach and clean up any rubbish that they find en route. The idea comes from a Swedish activity called Plogging (A mix of the words Jogging & Plocka Upp, 'to pick up' in Swedish) and this group will be Ireland's first official plogging group.
Their first two events were on Dollymount Strand in October and November and between the runs, 35 runners cleaned up over 12kg of rubbish from the beach. The event is a combination of promoting mental health, physical health, and the environmental health of our community, and will be taking place again on Dollymount Strand on the 12th of December at 10 am, meeting at Happy Out Cafe.
You can register for the event on Eventbrite
