Your Crawl Space Guys

They Really Dig What They Do! Written By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer

T

here are a lot of dirty jobs out there. Just ask Mike Rowe from the Discovery Channel. He had a whole series about them. One job that’s not necessarily “that kind” of dirty, but is nevertheless unpleasant, difficult, and claustrophobic, is crawl space work. Raise your hands out there if you enjoy getting under your house, banging up your knees and elbows, breathing all those dust and mold particles, vying for space with spiders and other creepy crawlers, and killing your back! No? Nobody enjoys that. Or so I thought… I just met someone who not only enjoys but sincerely loves this kind of work, and fortunately for us, he does it for a living. I’m talking, of course, about Larry O’Halloran, owner of Your Crawl Space Guys.

Larry founded the company 29 years ago! At that time, it was called American Remodeling, and as the name suggested, he did a lot of remodeling and dry rot repairs in addition to crawl spaces. In 2008, the real estate industry took an enormous hit, and as a result, priorities shifted. A lot more focus was placed on foundations and crawl spaces than had ever been done before. Loans began to be denied over inspections which revealed foundation issues. American Remodeling began to get more and more requests for crawl space work until eventually, they switched completely over. The name was changed to Your Crawl Space Guys and they’ve never looked back.

Larry is sincere in his claims. He truly loves what he does, and it shows. Almost 30 years now in the business and he’s going stronger than ever. People talk about having a “family business,” but this one is as family as it gets! Larry’s wife works in the office doing all the book keeping. His two sons work on his crew. His son-in-law and his son-in-law’s brother are both on the crew. He also has a set of twin brothers and a father-andson on the crew. So even if they aren’t directly related to Larry, the crew is family one way or another. And his whole crew has been with him for years, some as long as 20 years! Not only do they have decades of combined experience in the industry, they also have that much experience working together as a team.

That’s what really sets them apart from the competition according to Larry. To be fair, he stated, there are a lot of good companies in the area that do this kind of work. Although Larry and his team do an exceptional job, it’s really their friendly dispositions and focus on customer service that puts them at the top. Again, they enjoy what they do. The tagline on their logo says it all: “Your Crawl Space Guys: We dig what we do!” And that really does make all the difference, doesn’t it? Do you want someone working in your house who is miserable, someone who clearly dislikes their job and is just going through the motions? Or do you want someone fun, confident, and energetic who tackles every challenge with a smile?

There is a lot more to crawl space work than you might think, too.

It’s not just a matter of throwing some new plastic down and calling it good. There is a whole slew of services they provide: structural repairs, utilizing a structural engineer by the name of Jay Olluette; they can design custom engineered repairs for any project, whether it be post and beam replacement, new pier pads, or whatever is necessary; repair and replacement of your entire foundation; dry rot repair, and they’ll replace rotten floor framing all the way up to entire walls and full perimeter sill plates as needed; sump pump installation including trenches, full dig-outs, and they will enlarge or “dig out” your crawl space if it’s too small and inaccessible; small concrete repairs; and even just clean up of debris or putting down a new vapor barrier. No job is too big or too small!

risp air and turning leaves always means family fun at French Prairie Gardens during the fall season. There are plenty of activities for all ages, and the activity they’re most famous for is the Pigtucky Derby Pig Races. The Pigtucky Derby Race is really something special. The pigs are lined up, not unlike

horses at the Kentucky Derby, except dressed in mud and bandanas around their necks. Once they’re off, the auburn pigs race through a winding grassy muddy track to their hearts’ content, and right beside the track is seating for the whole family. Once you’ve seen the pigs come a’running, the classic Pumpkin Patch is open and running from October 2 through 31 for the perfect jack-o-lantern or seasonal decor with 20 varieties of pumpkins.

There’s also the incredibly impressive mazes, of which there are four! The Corn Maze, Sunflower Maze, Rope Maze, and Kid’s Hay Maze. The slides are great for all ages too, including the Tube Slide and brand new Super Mega Ride ‘n’ Slide. The kids can enjoy countless

f you’re reading this edition, you’ve already seen Kara Langley’s dynamic work.

She is the person behind the camera that produced the pictures of your friends and neighbors whose local businesses and services are features on many of our covers and in our articles.

A resident of McMinnville, Kara has long been passionate about photography, and she’s made it her professional calling for about three years now. Much of her work, of course, features couples of all ages who are marking engagements, weddings and anniversaries.

Her magazine work puts her in an entirely different milieu. Instead of beaches and idyllic fields and parks, Kara drops in on art galleries, roofing companies,

“It’s been fun taking photos for the magazines,” Kara said.

“I’ve definitely learned a lot, and it is different working with all sorts of businesses and people. Each client is a different experience.”

“I always want clients to enjoy their time during a photo shoot,” she adds. “I often find that the best way to get to know someone is by finding small things you have in common with them. This can help a lot during a shoot, and make them all that more comfortable because you have that one thing in common.”

She’s also ready to work with clients who may feel that they are not very photogenic. “It all comes down to bringing out their true smile,” she says. “I will ask them to fake laugh, or think of something funny, and that often brings them to laugh at themselves all while bringing out their actual smile.”

How to Carve the Perfect Pumpkin

Everyone can be an artist at pumpkin carving because it’s actually easier than it looks.

These 10 terrifying tips will have your gory gourds looking great for the entire spooky season.

1. START WITH THE PERFECT PUMPKIN Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve. Wash it with warm soapy water to prevent mold and dry it off with a paper towel.

2. CUT THE BOTTOM, NOT THE TOP For the lid, instead of cutting the top, cut the bottom. Cutting your lid from the bottom helps prevent the sides from caving in later. This also keeps moisture inside the pumpkin longer.

3. SCOOP OUT ALL THE PULP (strings and seeds) in a spiral motion until the pumpkin is clean inside, not one scoop at a time, and everything will come out in one drop. You can use the special “claw” that comes with a pumpkin carving kit, an ice cream scoop, or a large wooden spoon.

4. YOU CAN USE PREMADE DESIGNS from a pumpkin carving kit, from the internet, or design one yourself. For your own design, sketch it out on paper first and trace the sketch with a thick marker. Whichever design you choose, use masking tape to tape the design to the front of your pumpkin. Poke holes along the lines of your design with the poker from a pumpkin carving kit, or a pencil will also work.

5. WHEN YOU’RE READY TO CARVE, put the pumpkin in your lap with a towel (or wear pants you don’t mind getting dirty). Carving is easier when the pumpkin “face” is close to you, and this can reduce neck or back strain instead of leaning over the dining table. A sharp medium serrated knife is best for cutting medium to large features, and an X-Acto knife or small knife from a pumpkin carving kit is best for carving the small details.

6. WITH YOUR SMALL KNIFE, start by cutting the small details first so the pumpkin is more intact; if you cut the large features first you can accidentally break it. After the small details are cut, cut out the large features with your medium serrated knife. When everything is roughly cut out, you can use the small knife to clean up the edges of your design.

You can also use the discarded pieces creatively! The pulp can make a great tongue, vomit, or messy hair. Smaller pieces can be used for spikes, eyebrows, or teeth. Be creative!

8. CREATE A CHIMNEY You can use a real candle such as a votive, or you can skip this step and use an electric candle. For a real flame, light the candle on the bottom lid and place the pumpkin over it. After a few minutes the “ceiling” will have blackened. Cut around this blackened spot to make a small hole to vent the candle heat.

9. SPRINKLE CINNAMON INSIDE Cinnamon will prevent fungus, and when you light the candle your jack-o’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie.

10. ROAST THE PUMPKIN SEEDS! After removing the pulp, wash the seeds in a colander and dry between a towel. In a large bowl, toss the seeds with olive oil, salt, garlic powder, paprika, and black pepper, or season to your liking. Spread the seeds evenly on a lightly greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 for 12-15 minutes, tossing the seeds every 5 minutes for even browning. When the seeds are golden brown and radiate a cozy nut aroma, they’re done! Pumpkin seeds are a great source of fiber, zinc, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, and iron.

7. KEEP YOUR PUMPKIN FRESH! Rub vaseline (petroleum jelly) on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin Enjoy your jack-o’-lantern for the whole haunted holiday! still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it by soaking it face down in cold water for up to eight hours.

et’s face it, folks, 2021 has been a scary year! In the wake of 2020, I think perhaps we were all lulled into a false sense of security, assuming 2021 could only be better.

And while it hasn’t necessarily been much worse (we have seen a slowdown in COVID-related death rates, after all!), it also hasn’t been much better. So how can we combat those gloomy clouds hovering above, threatening to rain all over what remains of 2021? Well one way is to embrace a little scariness just in time for the Halloween season, and head on over to Scare Fair: Harbinger of Souls, going on at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds this October!

Partnering for the second year in a row with Portland’s own Creatures of the Night, Marketing Coordinator of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Tyler Nizer, is proud to announce that this year you can fight COVID or seasonalrelated ennui by attending their fully immersive walk-through haunt! Last year these two organizations united to bring us the first drive-through haunt, and it was so successful that they are returning and revitalizing the event this year; and it will be bigger, badder, and better than ever! Plus now you get to walk through instead of drive for more up-close and personal scares!

Creatures of the Night is an allvolunteer local organization of haunted entertainment consultants which has been in existence since 2013.

They partner with local community organizations to raise funds and make entertainment to support local businesses and bring communities together.

Artistic Director, David D. Jones, is incredibly enthusiastic about his work and, in particular, about bringing people together in a time when we have been so isolated.

He is grateful for the partnership they’ve developed with the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, and he’s especially excited to bring the scares!

communities and families through a feeling of wonder and trepidation.

Creatures’ highest priority is safety – of the physical surroundings and internal process – for the actors and our guests. In our method of storytelling, we believe it is the inner child that is on a journey of challenging and overcoming fears, both physical and internal.

Every participant is always in control of the experience and their level of comfort.”

This is where Creatures of the Night has separated themselves from the pack. Not only are they the first company to use 360 degree photography and Augmented Reality in their haunts, but they are also the first and only company in Oregon to provide customers with a customizable experience! They have incorporated an extra feature that is referred to as the Creature Candle. The candle can be adjusted by each group to align with their level of comfort, so if you like it really scary, you can turn the candle down low. If you prefer it less scary, you can turn it up brighter; the idea is that you are in control. In order to ensure that every visitor has the perfect experience for them, the candle will be available for purchase before you start your tour.

This year, the theme of the tour is “Harbinger of Souls” and you will encounter several souls at the event, including: Mary (a young woman in a white dress who haunts the rivers and forests), Ole Clem (a riverboat captain), the Cultists (mysterious figures in robes), Mark Forth (a WWII deep sea diver who went missing somewhere along the Willamette and still haunts it to this day), the Pacific Northwest Lake Monster, and the Caretaker (your guide).

The Willamette Valley has a long and dark history. Older fisherman have spoken of the strange and the bizarre; of robed

figures skulking about the land adjacent to the river; of large monstrosities with elongated necks piercing the water’s surface in search of food; of retrieved fishing nets full of repulsive and horrible treasures.

Only a girl in a white dress holding a candle offers hope and possible sanctuary.

Although it’s never been confirmed, this girl seems to guide those who are in danger or who are lost to safety. Trust her at your own peril!

This event is one of remarkable, family-friendly fun and entertainment! Being customizable, the experience can be as scary or as light-hearted as you’d like for it to be, but what they will not sacrifice is anyone’s safety. That is the number one priority for both Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Creatures of the Night. That means masks are required, social distancing will be practiced, and hours will be limited, but you

can still expect tons of fun and an incredibly immersive experience!

Groups will be limited to 4 (as David states, that’s not only the safest but also the best way to experience the tour) so plan accordingly. Hours of operation are FridaySaturday, 7-10pm starting October 1st and running through the end of the month.

For the little ones, Haunts Junior is a more kid-friendly, Scooby-Doo type experience that will be open from 6-7pm on Saturdays. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for Haunt Junior and can be purchased online at: CCScareFair.com.
