CLACKAMAS COUNTY WINTER FAIR

I

t’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Event Center as the Winter Fair returns for its sophomore campaign — though the event itself will look rather different from last year’s iteration.

While the inaugural Winter Fair was a drivethru event made necessary because of statewide COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s edition will be a full walk-about experience.

“Last year, we went with a drive-thru rendition for COVID protocols, and this year we’re excited to make it a walk-around event,” Fairgrounds Marketing and Event Coordinator Tyler Nizer says. “We’ve made an experience that can still be safe in the current environment, while bringing something that families can really enjoy.”

“We’ve been working on this project for years actually.

And last year, with the community needing more drivethru options, we were able to make it happen. It probably wouldn’t have happened last year otherwise.”

The layout will be different this year as well, with many additions and new features aimed at better facilitating a laid-back pedestrian experience. Entry will be by the Red Gate, which will kick off with a 12-foot-tall ornament and one of the highlights of last year’s Winter Fair: a 166-footlong tunnel of cascading, multi-colored twinkles.

Beyond that will be a huge light curtain across one side of the Ely Arena, which can be customized to display almost anything — including custom messages. Lauren says that one package the fairgrounds offers is aimed at popping the big question. “Can you imagine ‘Will you marry me?’ in huge letters on the side of Ely?” Lauren asks. “That’s one thing we were really passionate about adding this year.”

The fairgrounds worked with a local light vendor to craft the rest of the Winter Fair experience, which boasts more than 200,000 lights.

The event concludes with a Santa’s village designed by local resident Stephanie Anderson, whose home on Northwest 14th Avenue is particularly noted for its elaborate Halloween and Christmas displays. The Jolly Old Elf himself will visit the village to talk and take photos with children every night the fair is open (bring your camera!).

Though the Winter Fair debuted last year during the pandemic, Lauren Humphreys, member of the Clackamas County Fair Board and one of the lead organizers of the event, said it had actually been in the works long before. “I think this was just an awesome thing that we could offer,” Lauren says.

The Clackamas County Winter Fair kicks off November 26th — the day after Thanksgiving — and runs every Friday and Saturday through Christmas Eve, as well as December 16th, 19th, 22nd and 23rd. Hours are 5-10 p.m.

The festival is being especially geared toward families this year, with free parking and no charge for children 10 and under. Tickets are $15 for adults and children 11 and older. Grinch Cookies Despite their name, these cookies are about as festive and holiday-friendly as can be! These soft and chewy cookies are colored Grinch-green and decorated with milk chocolate candy pieces.

INGREDIENTS

1 C unsalted butter softened 1 2/3 C sugar 2 large eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3-5 drops green food coloring 3 1/3 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 ½ cup red and green M&Ms plus additional ½ cup

DIRECTIONS

1. Combine butter and sugar in a large bowl and use an electric mixer to beat until well-combined and light and fluffy (about 1 minute).

2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

3. Stir in vanilla extract and food coloring, until well-combined.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, cornstarch, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

5. Set mixer to low speed and gradually stir dry ingredients into butter mixture. Add ingredients and stir until well-incorporated.

6. Fold in M&M candies and cover bowl with plastic wrap. Chill in refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

7. Once dough has finished chilling, preheat oven to 350°F and line a cookie sheet with parchment paper 8. Drop cookie dough by heaping 1 ½ Tbsp-sized scoops onto

prepared cookie sheets, for perfectly round cookies, roll dough in your hands into a smooth ball.

9. Bake on 350°F for 11-13 minutes. If desired, gently press additional M&Ms into the tops of each cookie for decoration while they are still warm.

Though you should keep up with walks and regular activity as much as possible during the winter, sometimes Mother Nature makes it hard to be outside for as long as we normally would. Here are some ideas for keeping your pooch from going stir-crazy when it’s too cold to enjoy the outdoors.

TOYS: Invest in some new dog-safe toys to keep their brain busy. Food-dispensing toys tend to be an especially big hit with most pups.

PLAY THE SHELL GAME: Get 3 plastic cups, put a treat under one, and then shuffle them around and encourage your pet to find the treat! This is a fun and easy way to keep your dog stimulated.

MAKE AN INDOOR OBSTACLE COURSE: This one is a little more complicated, but it can really pay off! Use chairs, small tables, and various other household objects (even toys, like hula hoops) to arrange a course, then guide your dog around, over, and under the objects with treats.

Be sure that all items you use are stable and won’t fall on or hurt your buddy as they complete the course! Done safely, an obstacle course can keep your pup busy and happy for hours on end, plus it’s a great training and bonding experience.

ARRANGE A PLAYDATE: Invite your dog’s besties over for a play date to keep them happy and entertained.

A visit from their BFFF (Best Furry Friend Forever) will be a special treat they’ll absolutely love!

Peak Activity Fire Engine

n November 1st, the Woodburn Fire District began operating a new peak activity fire engine to help cover a surging number of 9-1-1 calls. Funding for four new firefighter positions to staff the new engine has been made possible with the rapid residential and industrial development that is occurring in the fire district.

The peak activity engine will be operated from 7am to 5pm Monday thru Thursday and will respond out of the main fire station on Newberg Highway. The new engine staffing will include a paramedic as part of the district’s continued commitment to advanced life support service that is funded by the local option levy approved by voters in 2018.

The rapid economic development that is providing additional property tax revenue for the district is also resulting in a sharp increase in the amount of emergency responses. The district is on pace to receive an estimated 3,500 emergency calls for service in 2021 representing a 23 percent increase from 2019, forcing the district to rely on volunteer firefighters or neighboring fire districts to respond to calls. It is estimated that the operation of the peak activity engine will reduce the reliance on the neighboring fire districts by about 30 percent and result in much quicker response times to emergency scenes.

that provides the minimum skills necessary to perform as part of a four member crew. The entire training program for new career firefighters requires one year to complete.

The four new firefighters include Tyson Gradwahl, Jorden Jacobucci, Dylan Selleck and Jared Weaver. All four have previous experience as volunteer firefighters and hold fire science degrees from Chemeketa, Portland, or Central Oregon Community Colleges. All of the new hires participated in an extensive testing and hiring process earlier this spring and were ranked in the top 12 out of 72 candidates who had applied. Applicants underwent a written test, oral interview and an assessment of their firefighting and emergency medical skills.

The fire district currently operates only one engine that is staffed by career firefighters on a full-time basis. “The hiring of the four new members is the first step to a fulltime second engine,” commented Joe Budge, Chief of the Woodburn Fire District. “It takes 12 firefighters to provide full-time day and night staffing for one fire engine.”

The district hopes to hire additional firefighters over the coming years to complete the second engine staffing, with the timeline dependent upon the rate of growth for the city.

To provide staffing for the peak activity engine, the Woodburn Fire District welcomed four new career firefighters at the October 20t h board meeting.

The new engine will be staffed with experienced firefighters and the new firefighters will be assigned to one of three shifts with incumbent firefighters following the completion of a six-week training academy

May the season be bright for you & yours Responding to C hange with G race t the onset of COVID I was quickly struck how the economic divide was quickly spreading between the wealthy and those stricken by poverty. The industries hardest hit at the onset were service related; hospitality, personal care, in-home assistance.

These are traditionally lower paid jobs with little to no paid time off; and that’s if they weren’t paid under the table. Many of these industries receive cash tips that, let’s face it, aren’t claimed as income so their unemployment eligibility may be drastically different than what they’re used to living on. And let’s not mention the employment department being overwhelmed and backed-up beyond reason.

All of this was 18 months ago. I know that we have adjusted and might have forgotten just how stressful those first couple months of COVID were. One thing I’ve noticed of late – there’s been a shift in how people are embracing the great slowdown. I see a difference in how they handle stress within this environment. The one trait I see more now than ever is grace. I see it in scheduling, showing up later, and taking time to have real conversations. I see

a yearning for more human interaction. Before COVID when a meeting wrapped up, everyone jetted out the door as fast as they could. Now there’s more lingering afterwards – more eye contact. We’re asking more questions. We’re actively listening to one another.

Grace, as a trait, belongs to a quickly fading generation – those who grew up before cell phones and the internet. Unfortunately we, as a society, had pretty much lost our grace until COVID. We’ve been hit by an unprecedented stressor – all of us at once – and we’ve all been given the opportunity to respond in our own way. As we head into this holiday season, we may want to remember that some of those around us are still struggling. Let’s share a bit of grace with others to acknowledge how they show up in the world. We all may need to be treated a little gentler as we learn to navigate the post-COVID world.

Early Entrepreneurs On The Willamette The History of Boones Ferry

H

ave you ever driven on Boones Ferry Road and wondered how this major byway winding from west Portland to south of Woodburn derived its name? You may possibly have heard rumors of this well-traveled road being associated with the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, but dismissed it as hearsay or the product of a fanciful imagination. If that’s the case, you may be surprised to learn that these rumors are not as far-fetched as they might seem.

Boones Ferry Road received its name from Boones Ferry, a ferry which plied the Willamette River from 18471954 in the vicinity of modern Wilsonville. Although Daniel Boone himself was not directly responsible for the construction of Boones Ferry, his great-grandson, Jesse, and his family, established the ferry shortly after arriving in the area in the mid-19th century.

Born in Kentucky on November 7, 1796, Boone’s grandson, Alphonso Boone Sr. moved to Jefferson City, Missouri where he worked a trading post that supplied travelers migrating west across the Great Plains. Following the premature death of his wife, Nancy, Alphonso and his children joined a wagon train bound for the Oregon Country. In Kansas their group banded together with the Donner Party, who were also heading west. However, unlike the Boone party which took the Applegate trail for the Northwest, the Donner Party split off towards Wyoming, where they met their infamous snowbound doom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

By Christmas of 1846, Alphonso and his family had reached Oregon and staked a land claim along the south bank of the Willamette River, between Oregon City and the pre-territorial settlement of Champoeg. In 1848, after approximately a year in Oregon, Alphonso and his two sons, Alphonso Jr. and Jesse, journeyed south to partake in the California gold rush, news of which had swept the nation by storm. While in California, Alphonso Sr. unfortunately succumbed to miner’s disease – a respiratory disorder that damages the lungs – and was buried along the Feather River in Butte County, CA. Until recently, it was believed that both of Alphonso’s sons returned to Oregon. However, local historians have determined that only Jesse made the trip back home. The fate of Alphonso Jr. is uncertain, but it appears he remained in California.

In light of this discovery, historians agree that Jesse, upon returning from California, and with the help of his family, undertook construction of both the ferry system and the split-log road connecting Portland and Salem. This road came to be known as Boones Ferry Road, with a route that would eventually span Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties. Judging by this highway’s meandering nature, it is believed that Jesse followed routes established by indigenous tribes who had been traversing the region for centuries.

As the years passed, a community developed along the river’s north bank near the ferry terminal, which came to be known as Boones Landing. In 1880, Boones Landing was renamed Wilsonville in honor of the town’s first postmaster, Charles Wilson. During the 1900s, the ownership of Boones Ferry transferred from Clackamas County to the State of Oregon, which operated the ferry until it was decommissioned in 1954 due to the construction of the Baldock Freeway Bridge and the I-5 freeway. In honor of the now defunct ferry, the bridge was renamed Boone Bridge.

The earliest version of the Boones Ferry consisted of a pair of canoes joined together by a platform, which was powered by oarsmen from the Tualatin Tribe— members of the larger Kalapuya Nation, whose ancestral lands ranged throughout the Willamette Valley. The ferry navigated the Newport Pool stretch of the Willamette River. By the twentieth century, the old canoe-platform ferry had evolved into a cable barge which made up to 300 trips daily. This newer iteration was powered by an onboard motor that propelled it back and forth across the river along steel cables anchored to each shore. This modernized version was capable of transporting up to twelve vehicles at a time. Interestingly, old-timers who lived while the ferry still operated recall that it received a boost in revenue from bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across the river during Oregon’s early years—particularly the Prohibition era. The fact that the ferry operated twenty-four hours a day created the ideal situation for transporting illegal booze under cover of darkness.

The Boone family’s operation on the Willamette was indeed a profitable venture. Prior to the advent of automobiles, when transportation through the Willamette Valley was either by foot, horseback, or horse-drawn carts, savvy

owners of river-front property recognized the demand for reliable passage across the region’s numerous waterways. Not surprisingly, the Boones weren’t the only enterprising individuals keen to capitalize on this business opportunity. John Taylor established Taylors Ferry on his property along the Tualatin River—hence, the subsequent construction of Taylors Ferry Road. Meanwhile, another pioneer from Daniel Boone’s Kentucky bloodline, Peter Scholl, also launched a ferry service on the Tualatin, access to which would lead to the development of today’s well-traveled Scholls Ferry Road.

If you’re wondering what remains today of the old Boones Ferry, Wilsonville’s Boones Ferry Park now resides on the north shore of the Willamette River where the north terminal stood. The Tauchman House, located on the park grounds, was originally home to one of the ferry’s early operators, Emil Tauchman. Across the water on the opposite shore, a marina and boat ramp provide recreational access to the river at the location of the old south terminal. From the southbound lanes of I-5, should you gaze west while crossing the Boone Bridge, the location of the ferry lies approximately 660 yards up river.

So the next time you’re stuck in traffic on Boones Ferry Road, take a moment to remember these intrepid pioneers whose names commemorate our region’s storied past. The ferries they established proved instrumental to the economic development of Portland and the Willamette Valley.

Indeed, they played a critical role in shaping the layout of the very landscape we live in today.

hile our levels of passion regarding the subject may vary, music holds a very special place in all of our hearts. It’s in our blood. It transports us. It moves us on a primal level, in ways we can’t always articulate, and it uniquely connects us. Who hasn’t walked down the street and felt an instant camaraderie with a complete stranger wearing the t-shirt of one of our favorite bands? Well I’m happy to announce that next time that happens, you’ll be bonding over a local artist, and she hails from right here in Canby. She’s causing quite a stir in the country music scene, and her name is Olivia Harms, also known as the Rhinestone Cowgirl!

Her mom was the perfect mentor; always there, always supportive, but never pushy, and she helped Olivia assemble a team and cut her first album when she was only 16!

She was highly influenced by the popcountry music that was popular in 2011 and listed Shania Twain and Taylor Swift as her main influences.

Olivia went to school for a Bachelors’ degree in agriculture. Having grown up in Canby on a 150 year-old family farm, which is as much a part of who she is as her music, she promised her mom she would secure an alternative future before chasing “the dream.” Now with her degree in her back pocket, she’s ready to take on the music world.

Santa brought album, and harkens back to classic country her first guitar around that same time, western. “I was going for a very traditional and with her innate passion for music country vibe, but with some Bakersfield and already burning brightly, she taught some country western swing to bring back herself how to play. honky-tonks,” Olivia says.
