Rated G. Akeelah and the Bee (2006)

“You gonna eat your tots?” This movie exploded on the scene in my junior year of high school and became an instant pop culture success. In a small Idaho town, awkward teenager Napoleon Dynamite (played by Jon Heder) doesn’t fit in. When his grandmother is injured, his weird football-nostalgic Uncle Rico shows up and bullies him. Without reprieve at home or school, Napoleon makes a new friend in Pedro, a melancholic Hispanic boy who mostly speaks Spanish, and the two form a plan to run for class president: Vote For Pedro. Interpersonal drama and quirks galore, Napoleon wanders about looking for friends and purpose, until he finally discovers them in the most unlikely of places. Good for teens and adults. Rated a strong PG. Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

POP CULTURE

In this absurd comedy from Ivan Reitman, Arnold Schwarzenegger plays an undercover cop who disguises himself as a kindergarten teacher in our very own Astoria, Oregon. His quest? Find a mother and child in danger. As the principal astutely asks, does he have experience teaching? No, no he does not. But he soon gets the kids into ship shape by taking a police academy approach to their chaos and bringing much needed order to the classroom. It’s wacky, ridiculous, and cheesy, counterbalanced with bad guys, fisticuffs, and gunplay. Not a little kid’s movie, reserve this one for teenagers and older.

“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.” A drama starring Keke Palmer, Laurence Fishburne, Angela Bassett, and others, this is based on the true story of grade school students who compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Meant to inspire kids who come from lower socioeconomic backgrounds to succeed, it goes to show you that talent, skill, and intelligence are independent of where and how you grow up, and that hard work, persistence, and believing in yourself matter most. A good movie for pre-teens and above. Rated PG. Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

“Sometimes failures lead to better things.” Disney/Pixar’s animated comedy stars a huge cast, including Billy Crystal, John Goodman, John Krasinski (Jim from The Office! ), Helen Mirren, Aubrey Plaza, and more. This prequel to the popular Monsters Inc. is all about dreams and personal failure, and the story of when Mike and Sully attend college to become scarers. Sully, being big and scary, is a natural scarer who doesn’t have to work very hard; contrastingly, Mike, who’s a tiny comedian, has to study very hard to be taken seriously. Ultimately, it teaches the lesson of finding what’s special about you, even when it’s different from what you want and imagined. Funny, heartfelt, and genuinely insightful, this is a great family movie.

FROM DOODLING TO DAZZLING DE TAIL!

LUCAS NICKERSON was raised here in Oregon, just up the road and over the hill. Being raised in a simple barn, he was quite fond of animals of all types. He especially loved to draw them (sometimes depicted in hideous, mutated forms), most often to illustrate puns or jokes that he loved. It wasn’t long before he realized that people actually got a laugh out of his doodling. As he grew, he realized that the hamlet of Beavercreek was a little too small for a person with his worldly aims, so he set out on a 4-year epic journey across the world. Much like Bruce Wayne of legend, he sought out the masters of art mediums and traditional techniques in hopes of learning their secrets. After failing and spending his only money on he remained for three long years. He eventually made his way home via an extended stop in Seoul, Korea. It was there that he obtained his much sought-after knowledge and art technique by carefully mimicking a certain master’s every stroke. Upon returning home, he realized that a degree in studio arts would be a nice addition to his accomplishments. He traded a disused kidney and a small package of foreign gum for a document proving his merit. He now resides in Oregon City, a town famed for the creation of the Hacky Sack and all-star U.S.A. baseball pitchers. His wife is lovely and kind, his dogs are well behaved, but his daughter is starting to show unusual tendencies that are much like his own. He has a lot of anxiety about that.

Kids’ stuff explodes when they come home, so having a designated area is key to keeping tidy. Set up a backpack / coat station–often using a coat rack and bench combo–in a foyer, hallway, or mudroom to hang their things, such as a backpack, coat, lunchbox (when empty), and more. This will keep the clutter contained and from taking over your house!

2. School Supplies

4. Backpack Drop Zone

Create a quiet, comfortable space where your kiddo can focus and do their homework with little to no distractions. Be it a desk or lap desk (my favorite) for mobile studying, they need somewhere to work. The nice thing about a desk or lap desk is it works for homework, a laptop / tablet stand, eating table, and more.

1. Clothes

Perhaps obvious, clothes shopping is essential for your kiddo every year. Set a budget, and let your kids pick out their favorites (within reason and appropriate for its purpose). And doing this late summer will avoid crowds, lines, and the anxiety of waiting too long. If your kids wear a uniform, get them fitted and ordered sooner than later.

Additionally, go through last year’s clothes to make room for new clothes!

The school schedule is 100% different from summer when the kids are home, so get ready for those hectic early mornings now. Restart the habit of making bag lunches the night before to save time in the morning, and verify their lunch boxes are still usable. And a few weeks before school starts, have your kids start going to bed earlier each night and wake up to an alarm clock so they get in the habit when school starts. A sunrise alarm clock will gradually wake them and also works as a bedside light. advertise with us, call 503.825.2111

3.Homework Station

Whether your kids are homeschooled or go to public / private school, they’ll need supplies, and most schools provide a list. Writing utensils especially, such as pencils, pens, erasers, markers, and rulers are super important. And a pencil case isn’t a bad idea either to organize your supplies.

Because it’s sweet, cats and dogs often lick it when placed low enough to reach. Similarly, make sure your car doesn’t leak antifreeze, and ensure spare bottles are stored out of pets’ reach.

Arrange for holiday pet care as early as possible. As the holidays approach, our schedules get busy and we travel often. Set some time aside and plan ahead.

Aside from dangerous chocolate, cooked bones, and raw dough, many other foods can be toxic or lethal for pets. A safer alternative is pet-approved treats to keep your pets safe.

7. Parties

Many shiny decorations look like fun toys to your pets, but they can be dangerous! Display them out of reach due to choking hazards and possible toxic metals. FOR By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

AUTUMN

4. Fur A pet’s fur coat is key to maintaining warmth during cooler months. If you shave your dog or cat during the summer, allow it to re-grow for fall. If you need a coat, so does your dog or cat!

PET TIPS

Holiday parties mean more people in your home. If you have a special needs or nervous pet, make sure you warn your guests or arrange for pet care. Verify that doors are closed or locked, or plan to invest in a pet gate or barrier to keep your pets from escaping.

2. Killer cold Cold temps are extremely dangerous for your pets. So if it’s really cold outside, don’t leave your pets out for longer than 15-20 minutes. If you need to take them out to go potty, they might need a winter jacket. Temps below 32 degrees can cause hypothermia and frostbite. Puppies, kittens, and small animals even more so.

A great time to check pet ID tags and microchips is autumn, with their indoor/outdoor habits changing with the seasons. Just take a moment and verify their info is updated and correct.

WE GO!

VERYONE HAS A FAVORITE BACK TO SCHOOL MEMORY. And although it’s not the same world as it was when we went to school, it doesn’t take much to bring it all back! I walked the halls of Daxon’s school the other day, it was pretty empty and the floors were being shined. The contrast between where they had already ran the buffer and the rooms that were still in line was stark. With the shoestring budgets schools are limited by, maintaining what we do have is of the utmost importance. Taking care of what we’ve got – like performing those maintenance rituals –shows that we value our surroundings. We don’t need to have the newest and brightest to show up with excitement for the experience; with a good attitude, and ready to give it our all! More than anticipation is in the air, but also our hope for great things to come of our efforts.

Stephanie Wells OREGON BROKER

This talk of school days takes me back to the smell of new Crayola crayons and I think that maybe – just maybe– they can actually make me an artist! One can dream.

WHAT IS THAT ONE THING THAT TAKES YOU ... BACK TO SCHOOL? Is it the sidewalk sale at JCPenney; the fresh haircuts? Does the sound of the pencil sharpener making its point ever send you back; or maybe you still feel the pain of blisters on your hands from the monkey bars after a few months away? We all have something that takes us back in time – and leaves us smiling. And so too will our children. SCHOOL

The mid to late 1800s saw a number of significant events in the history of Cannon Beach. Ships at sea were grateful for the construction of the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse, which was first lit in 1881. At the time of its construction, it was the most expensive lighthouse built on the West Coast. In 1891, James P. Austin built the first hotel at present day Arch Cape—the Austin House— and chose the name “Cannon Beach” for the postal stop in reference to the lost cannons. Seven years later, locals were delighted when one of the lost cannons was discovered in nearby Arch Cape Creek. It was subsequently relocated to a position of honor in front of the Austin House. To the north in Elk Creek, Bill George built the town’s first hotel, the eponymous Hotel Bill. George constructed the Robert Matsumura, Contributing

HISTORY By

t’s a good bet that Cannon Beach may be one of your favorite coastal destinations. After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. Have you ever wondered though, about the origins of this cherished beach community?Archaeological records indicate the Cannon Beach area was inhabited by early ancestors of the indigenous Tillamook people as early as the 15th century. The beginnings of Cannon Beach as we know it today, however, trace back to the 19th century and the famous expedition of Lewis & Clark. In 1806, while wintering in Fort Clatsop, near present day Astoria, the expedition learned of a beached whale to the south. A party was dispatched to investigate in hopes of acquiring blubber and oil. The party, which included Captain William Clark and Sacajawea, traveled across Tillamook Head and located the whale near the mouth of a creek which Clark named “Ecola,” the term for “whale” in the Tillamook language. Clark’s interactions with the local Tillamook people were some of the earliest on record, and his journals describe five Tillamook lodges along the creek. Clark was able to successfully barter for the needed blubber and whale oil, and to this day, a whale sculpture stands on Hemlock Street commemorating the event. Early settlers to the area later renamed the creek “Elk Creek,” and formed a community nearby with thatAsname.tothe name “Cannon” in Cannon Beach, the reference originates with a naval schooner, the USS Shark, which shipwrecked on the treacherous Columbia River Bar in 1846. A section of the ship containing cannons drifted south and washed ashore near present day Arch Cape. Although iron, copper, and wood were salvaged from the wreckage, the cannons were lost as the tides buried them in sand.

hotel from logs washed ashore from an experimental log raft that Portland industrialist, Simon Benson, had employed for the transport of logs to San Francisco. A post office was established in Hotel Bill operating under the name Ecola—a reference to Clark’s original name of the creek. The center of activity in the burgeoning town, Hotel Bill even hosted President Woodrow Wilson, who stayed there in 1914. Many signature features of today’s Cannon Beach emerged in the early 20th century. One of the most important achievements was the completion in 1911 of an oiled rock road from Seaside to Cannon Beach, shortening travel time between the two towns to 30 minutes. A bridge was also built across Elk Creek. Around the same time, the area to the south previously known as Cannon Beach, abandoned the name and chose to be called Arch Cape. In 1922, another name-change occurred, this time involving Elk Creek. At the insistence of the U.S. Postal Service, the Ecola post office was renamed due to a name similarity with another post office in the state located near Salem—a town called Eola. The name Cannon Beach was selected. Although the post office was forced to abandon the name Ecola, it was chosen for land gifted to the state in 1932 by private landowners—land that became today’s Ecola State Park. Elk Creek was also restored to its previous name, Ecola Creek. During the 1950s, the cannon from the USS Shark was relocated to a site along Highway 101, where it would serve as a historical marker and be more accessible to tourists. Today, a replica cannon stands in this spot, while the original cannon resides in the Cannon Beach History Center. Two more cannons from the USS Shark were recovered in Arch Cape in 2008, and were sent to Texas A&M University for restoration. These restored cannons can now be viewed in the Columbia River Maritime Museum in Astoria. In 1964, disaster befell Cannon Beach when an earthquake in Alaska generated a tsunami that struck the North Oregon coast. Water from the tsunami flooded CannondowntownBeachand washed away the Elk Creek Bridge, cutting off the north entry into town. In an effort to rally the community after the disaster, the first Cannon Beach Sandcastle Contest was held, a tradition that survives to this day. Lastly, what history of Cannon Beach doesn’t include Haystack Rock? This iconic landmark was formed approximately 17 million years ago when massive lava flows spread out over the Columbia Plateau and met with the ocean. Like other familiar rock formations along the Oregon Coast such as Table Rock and Twin Rocks, Haystack Rock is a sea stack—a basalt formation created underground when molten lava meets the marine environment, cools, and subsequently rises vertically above the ocean due to geological uplift and changes in sea level. As time passes, these formations are sculpted by wind and water into the unique shapes seen today. In 1968, Haystack Rock was added as a National Wildlife Refuge to safeguard the seabird nesting habitat there. And in 1990, Haystack Rock was designated a Marine Garden by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife. When you find yourself in Cannon Beach soaking up the quaint, rustic charm of this popular seaside town, imagine the Tillamook lodges along Ecola Creek, the beached whale encountered by Captain Clark and Sacajawea, the shipwrecked USS Shark, and how today’s Cannon Beach was previously known as Elk Creek and Ecola, before Arch Cape relinquished the name to the town we know and love today. An exterior fire will quickly break windows and extend into the living spaces of the home and into the attic through ventilation openings.

O n July 18, 2022 at 1:01 a.m., Woodburn firefighters responded to a residential structure fire on Tomlin Avenue in Woodburn. The fire was started by the spontaneous ignition of rags used to clean up an oil-based stain. None one was injured in the fire that caused extensive damage to the home.

All rags used to apply and clean-up oil-based finishes must be stored outside in a metal container or laid out in the open on a noncombustible surface until fully dry beforeHomeownersdisposing.should also avoid the storage of combustible materials against the exterior of their home.

WOODBURN

Woodburn Fire District (WFD) E-21 arrived to find the one-story ranch-style residence with heavy fire on the west side of the house and heavy smoke issuing from all the roof eaves from the attic vents. The fire started on the exterior and grew rapidly in a pile of debris stored against the outside wall of the home. The fire extended into the house through a large bedroom window that failed due to fire impingement within one minute of the fire ignition.

Firefighters from Hubbard, Mt. Angel, Aurora, and Marion County Fire District No. 1, along with volunteer firefighters from Woodburn, all assisted WFD career firefighters in extinguishing the blaze. Volunteers from the Woodburn CERT provided rehab for the firefighters working at the scene. For information on how to serve the community as a volunteer firefighter or CERT member, please visit the WFD website.

FINISHES

The first arriving fire crews did a quick knock-down of the exterior fire and then made entry into the house and extinguished the fire in the bedroom adjacent to the exterior fire. Following a thorough search of the structure for trapped occupants, firefighters worked to pull down the ceiling drywall to expose and extinguish the fire that had fully involved the entire attic space. Fire investigators determined a trash bag filled with rags used to clean up an oil-based finish had spontaneously ignited. The homeowner’s security cameras provided video evidence of the fire ignition and investigators found the remains of the rags used to cleanup the oil-based stain.

Combustion Awareness

WFD would like to remind homeowners to use caution when working with oil-based stains and finishes. Spontaneous combustion of oily rags occurs when a rag or cloth used in the product application or clean-up is slowly heated to its ignition point through oxidation that releases heat. If the heat has no way to escape, like in a pile or sealed garbage bag, the temperature will rise to a level high enough to ignite the oil, and the rag or cloth.

Sleeping when the fire started, the family of four escaped before firefighters arrived. The crew experienced zero visibility and high heat upon entry. The fire heavily damaged the west exterior of the home, the attic and roof structure and one bedroom. Heavy smoke throughout the home, the need for ceiling removal and water application in the attic damaged the contents in all rooms of the residence. The fire’s intensity blistered paint and melted the vinyl windows of a neighboring home. FIRE DISTRICT OFFICE: 503.982.2360

...DISCOVERING WOODBURN AND BEYOND

In addition to chiropractic care, the clinic provides massage therapy, allowing patients even more relief to aches and pains.

In fact, Dr. Webb cares for adults he cared for as kids, seeking continued care and now care for their own children.

It’s a tree that keeps growing and a philosophy that has proven quite successful: family first. 

Webb Chiropractic Clinic 2230 N Pacific Highway Woodburn, OR 97071

Plain and simple, the clinic’s mission is realignment of the body — the way it’s supposed to be — to correct interference, so the body can heal itself.

Family At The Heart of Care

Using the most-proven techniques, Dr. Webb diagnoses and treats most patients in one visit and accepts Medicare and even cash. Many clinics only treat auto accidents and workman’s comp for larger profits. Not the Webbs. They care for the whole family and have been now for 42 years and counting.

F or the Webbs, family means everything. Theirs is a family business caring for the whole family, no exceptions. After completing chiropractic studies at the University of Western States in Portland, Ronny Webb, DC, started Webb Chiropractic Clinic in 1984. His wife, Janice, is the office manager, and their daughter, Tana Neliton, a trained massage therapist, works the front desk. Her husband, Aaron Neliton, their identical twin daughters, Parker and Paige, and Kali, the Webbs’ second daughter, do not work at the Woodburn clinic but cheer on the family business. Again, family comes first, starting with sports physicals, a popular appointment before the start of the school year, especially at the affordable rate of $20. Most patients see Dr. Webb for adjustments from normal wear and tear, auto accidents, workplace incidents and more.

Better yet, you can store small tools themselves, such as screwdrivers, mini-levels, Allen wrenches, specialty tools, or small hammers.

Flower Power

Established in 1927—with acreage in Portland and on Swan Island, hence the name—the farm was relocated to Canby in 1953. It was purchased by the Gitts family in 1963, and since then has doubled in size and scope. Still owned and operated by the Gitts family to this day, during the blooming season the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever

t has become increasingly difficult over the past few years to find inspiration in the world, to find reasons to smile. We have sometimes felt overwhelmed, gotten caught up in the negatives, and neglected to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life. Quite literally, we have forgotten to stop and smell the flowers. In order to rectify that situation, though, we need look no further than our own backyards. Swan Island Dahlias, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the entire country, is located right here in Canby, and they want nothing more than to simply share the fruits of their labor with all of us and return that smile to our faces!

Three generations have proudly run Swan Island Dahlias. I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with Heather GittsSchloe, daughter of Nicholas and Linda Gitts (who currently run the farm) whoandgranddaughterandofNickMargaretGitts, initiallypurchased the farm back in 1963. Her passion and love for the farm was evident in every word she spoke. Some of us work to live, but clearly she and her family live to work (on this farm). The gratitude she expressed for being a part of something so sublime and so positive was inspiring, and her sincerest wish was only to share all of this with the community at large.

With 370-plus varieties on display, and on average roughly 10 new varieties introduced every year, there’s always something new and exciting to be found. Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a six-day dahlia festival every summer, split between two weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage. Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for two full months, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30. It’s free to attend, free to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous flowers isn’t enough to lure you, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food—anywhere from two to six food trucks are on site at all times, the educational classes (art, health and beauty, floral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm) certainly will. This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it.

Swan Island Dahlias is located at 995 NW 22nd Avenue, Canby; it is open six days a week, 9 am to 5:30 pm (closed Wednesdays) from Aug. 1–Sept. 30. Gift shop open year round.

Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls. Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s.

Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes its own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross.

“We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom qual ity flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a wantspionshipchamandtohoist a banner to

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners.

“The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’” Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks.

HISTORY

It wasn’t until 1966, however, that the first Oktoberfest was held in Mount Angel. The inaugural celebration was the brainchild of nine local businessmen (many of Germanic heritage) who were looking to start a new town festival. It was noted that Mount Angel’s churches and buildings had a German feel to them. With $100 borrowed from the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce— which was spent to purchase beer for the festival—the town’s first Oktoberfest commenced in the center of town at the intersection of Palm and Main Street, and included some quirky events such as a group sing-along at the bandstand and an auto race. One of the biggest improvements over the years has been in the quality of the beer. In the early days of Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest, only a single beer was served, and it was typically either Blitz or Olympia—whichever offered a better deal at the time. These early years (in terms of the beer) were focused more on quantity and not so much on quality.

Mount Angel Oktoberfest Good Cheer, Beer & Lederhosen

S hould you find yourself surrounded with individuals decked out in dirndl and lederhosen, be assured that you haven’t been magically transported to Germany. In all likelihood, you’re enjoying the Oktoberfest celebration in Mount Angel, Oregon. You may already be familiar with the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, but did you know it is the largest festival of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest, and that despite October being featured in its name, the event is actually celebrated in September? When considering the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, and its perennial success as a major Germanic folk festival, the first question one might ask is, “How did this festival start to begin with?” and “Why Mount Angel, Oregon, of all places?”

The answer to these questions takes us back to the late 19th century when Reverend Father Adelhelm Odermatt migrated to Oregon in 1881, with a contingent of Benedictine monks from Engelberg, Switzerland for the purpose of establishing a chapter in the United States. After visiting several locations, Lone Butte (situated at the present day town of Mount Angel) was chosen as the site of the new chapel. During this period the area also experienced a major influx of immigrants from Bavaria. Due to the efforts of Odermatt—which included the establishment of an Abbey and Benedictine monastery—the town that sprung up here was named Mount Angel (the English translation of Engelberg), honoring the Swiss origins of Odermatt and the monks.

As a cultural festival the Oktoberfest is embraced by the entire town. The majority of Mount Angel’s residents will dress in traditional attire for the four days of the festival, with children and teenagers firstwheremusicandplaythethetraditionalperformingdancesinstreetsdaily.InbeertentsrevelersthesamesongsdancetothesameasinMunich,Oktoberfestoriginated, and which remains the largest festival of its type to this day. And although there are certain differences between the Oktoberfest in Munich and the Mount Angel Oktoberfest—such as the drinking of beer from red plastic cups instead of traditional glass steins, and the absence of classic food favorites like pork knuckles and grilled chicken—the Bavarian spirit of the event remainsAlongauthentic.withthebeer and sauerkraut (which are traditional Oktoberfest fare), and traditional activities such as singing, dancing, and parades, the festival also features an Oktoberfest Olympics which hosts new events and competitions. For example, proving your “German-ness” by holding a beer stein aloft as long as possible, hammering a nail into a tree faster than other competitors, speed-sausage eating, rolling and stacking beer kegs, and of course, yodeling. Monica Bochsler, the festival’s director of marketing and public relations maintains, “We just feel like the winner should be able to yodel.”

As for the longevity of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, Bochsler believes tradition is the driving force behind their success. “We’ve survived because there is an extremely strong streak of tradition,” she insists. “You’ll still find tons of people wearing lederhosen, dancing traditional German routines.” For 2022, the Mount Angel Oktoberfest runs from September 15th through 18th. With the rise of the craft brewing movement over the past decade, festivalgoers have sought quality rather than quantity, and in response, the organizers of the event have answered with a “microgarten” that features various local craft breweries. Today, the Mount Angel Oktoberfest offers a wide array of beer and ale choices, including traditional German brands such as Spaten, Andechs, and Weihenstephaner, to Oregon craft brews from Widmer, Boneyard, pFriem, and more. Even domestic staples such as Coors and Budweiser are available, as well as a variety of hard ciders.

Although Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest has grown over the years, a strong commitment to the local community has remained a driving force for the festival. Throughout its lifetime, the festival has donated over $3 million to schools, churches, and other non-profit service organizations in the region. Not to mention the revenue earned from the food booths of various non-profit organizations at the festival, which for many of them represent their single largest source of income for the year.

In addition to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest being community-oriented, it is also a family-friendly atmosphere. Each year a festival Kindergarten is provided free of charge for children, which includes rides, live performances, bouncy houses, and a petting zoo.
