The Hubbard Inn

has finally come to an end and while many restrictions on bars and restaurants are still in place, it’s quite possible that things could start opening up again in the next few months. It’s been a difficult stretch, especially for our local small businesses, but there is hope in the air and it seems that there may be light at the end of the tunnel. In the meantime, let’s make sure we keep supporting our one-of-a-kind local treasures so that they’ll be able to survive and reopen their doors again soon!

One place in particular that we don’t want to see succumb to the mayhem of 2020 is The Hubbard Inn, which has been around since 1889 (which incidentally is the same year that Woodburn was incorporated as a city). Yes, you read that correctly - they’ve been in business for over 130 years, and they just keep getting better.

Although the name may be a bit deceptive, it’s not an actual inn at all, but rather a place for “good friends, good times, and good food,” as their website so accurately states. “Inn” is a term that has been used for hundreds of years and historically referred to places that provided food and lodging. However, through the years the meaning of the word evolved and can now be used almost synonymously with terms like “pub,” or “tavern.” To be clear, you’ll have a great time when you visit The Hubbard Inn, but don’t expect to stay the night.

As one would expect of a local establishment that has more than a century of history behind it, this

is not some generic strip-mall bar with a manufactured, inauthentic charm. It’s a one-of-a-kind, privately owned and operated, no nonsense, adults-only bar; the kind of place that astute travelers and locals seek out to get a real sense of a community. It’s a simple, down-to-earth place where real people come to socialize and enjoy a cold drink and a hot meal.

If you haven’t been there already, take our word for it that they have a fantastic menu, and their full bar serves up any drink you could possibly concoct on a night out!

When it comes to food, the burgers are especially incredible. They use very high quality beef and the freshest of ingredients. Manager Susan Bernstein says it’s so good that some customers literally come in just to order portions of their beef to take home. Another local favorite is their patty melt, which is made with that same fantastic meat.

The Prime Rib is another option that customers can’t get enough of.

It’s slow cooked to perfection, and if you’re French Dip connoisseur you’re in luck because they use the Prime Rib to make those sandwiches too. If you like Mexican food, their burritos and street tacos are very popular as well, with generous portions and authentic, locally-sourced carne asada.

For more adventurous eaters, they have a unique dish that admittedly not everyone loves, but some come from far and wide to partake of. Their Gizzards might scare some people off, but believe it or not, it’s actually one of their most-requested dishes.

Now or later, you’ll definitely want to pay them a visit or call for carry out. When their normal business hours can resume, they’ll bring back Prime Rib, Rib dinners and weekend breakfasts, too!

The Hubbard Inn has always been a community-oriented place where you can come to relax and feel at home.

When they are fully open there are pool tables, darts, and video lottery games available to keep you occupied for an evening, and they occasionally have live music and

dancing. They’ve also hosted holiday toy drives, college Civil-War parties, and many other events that bring the community together.

Great food, great drinks and great atmosphere makes The Hubbard Inn a place we'll want to enjoy for years to come. ats and dogs can be prone to dental disease because they do not have their teeth cleaned as frequently as their humans do. Dental check-ups should be a part of your pet’s regular health screenings. Next time you’re at the vet, be sure to discuss the condition of your pet’s mouth. Your vet will explain whether getting a professional dental cleaning is recommended.

Brushing your pet’s teeth is something you can do at home to maintain their oral health. Regular at-home brushing is recommended for cats and dogs in order to prevent plaque build-up. Plaque can lead to gum disease and, on rare occasions, problems that can spread through the body.

You’ll need a couple of things to do this properly: A pet toothbrush, which has smaller bristles and a smaller head than a regular toothbrush. Some of them are even designed to fit on your finger. It’s also necessary to use special pet toothpaste for your cat or dog. Human toothpaste can be dangerous for pets and make them sick. Plus, pet toothpaste is flavored to appeal to animals, and it’s meant to be swallowed.

Start by approaching your pet when he’s relaxed. Sit with him in a quiet location and speak in a soothing voice. Next, put the toothbrush to his mouth and gently move it around. It’s ok if you only brush one or two teeth the first few times. Try again every day.

Your pet will eventually get used to it and will be more relaxed.

It’s not necessary to brush your pet’s teeth for as long as you would your own. Usually a few seconds is enough to apply the toothpaste which will stick to the surface of the teeth, helping to dissolve plaque, and preventing future build-up.

If your pets aren’t used to having their teeth brushed, it may take a while for them to warm up to the idea, but with the right tools and a little patience, you can feel better about your pet’s dental health. ◾ *info from avma.org

C

anby-based portrait photographer Jayme Romine is a do-it-yourself kind of girl.

When she was a senior at Toledo High School, she and a friend decided to take their own senior pictures rather than paying a photographer for them. As it turned out, that was the start of a journey that would ultimately lead her towards a successful career.

“It started out just with doing pictures of friends and family,” she says. “It was a hobby, taking pictures of my own children and my own memories, that over the years progressed into a business.” That business is Jess & Jay Photography.

Jayme specializes in portrait-style photography for families, high school seniors, newborns, obligatory cake smashes… you get the idea. And it’s not as easy as you might think.

“It’s important to have an eye in photography, the right angles, right lighting, et cetera,” she says. “But I think it’s also just as important to have a way of working with people, especially when you’re working with children. Sometimes you have to get on their level to get them to open up and act a little more natural around the camera.”

Sometimes, she’ll use props to help set the scene, tell a particular story or distract the children. “It really depends on the shoot. They are all so different!” she says. “I typically try to get a feel of what the clients themselves are looking for when it’s a personal shoot.”

Her favorite is holiday shoots - they have the best decor and props. “With the Christmas sessions, I find ideas and themes I like and then I just go all out to make sure they are set-ups that I’d enjoy myself,” she says. “I’ve done Christmas hot cocoa, PJs on a bed, even a glitter session.”

After doing this for a couple of years, Jayme is still a little surprised by how each shoot is as unique as the people themselves. She always uses different props and sets, so each shoot has a different feel. “Sometimes, I can incorporate something I already have,” she says. “Sometimes clients bring things, and sometimes I buy new stuff to give me inspiration.”

She uses props the most when doing newborn shoots, such as baskets, bathtubs, swaddle cloths, and so on. “There are a lot of props that go into my newborn shoots,” she says.

“For the family shoots, I typically get them up, walking around and interacting together.

I try to capture those moments in the session that I feel are meant to be captured, whether candid or posed.”

Though photography has become her profession, Jayme says she’s still driven by the simple motivation she had when she first started out as a high school senior and amateur photographer: preserving the moments that matter. “When I’m older, when my children are older, I want to be able to look back on those moments,” she says. “And I love that I can preserve other people’s moments in time just the same as my own.”

ometimes life gives you the hard knocks. If you’ve recently been in an accident and need your vehicle repaired, or even if you’re just in need of some general service or maintenance work, there is a brand new shop here in Woodburn for all of your automotive needs. Mid-Valley Auto Body & Service Center is a new full service auto repair shop that has roots going back nearly 20 years.

dreams that he discussed and shared with Ken. One option they considered was for Alfonso to take over for Ken when he retired, but as it turned out life threw them a curveball in the form of a number of obstacles after Ken’s accident that prevented that from happening.

Alfonso was required to seek other employment opportunities for a time in the insurance industry adjusting claims, but sometimes a detour in plans can have beneficial effects, and this experience proved to be pivotal for him.

As the obstacles that had previously prevented him from taking over for Ken were removed, Ken’s son Tim was able to track Alfonso down and finally offer him ownership of the shop.

How can it be both brand new and have so much history?

Many of you may remember Ken’s Auto Body. Both Ken and his business were popular fixtures in the Woodburn community since 2001, and Ken had a solid reputation around town for running his business with level-headed fairness and integrity. Unfortunately, a bad accident forced him into early retirement, and following that there was a period of adjustment ALFONSO, SANDRA AND FAMILY while new ownership was being established, but the good news is that things are now settled!

As of August 1st, 2020, Ken’s Auto Body is now called Mid-Valley Auto Body & Service Center. New owners Alfonso Herrera and Sandra Herrera-Alonzo have nothing but the utmost respect for Ken and the business that he built, and they look forward to honoring his legacy as they move forward. Alfonso is the perfect person for the job, actually, since he worked with Ken managing the shop for 6 years.

This time around, the stars were aligned perfectly! Alfonso now had a degree in business management, years of experience in the body shop industry, as well as valuable experience in the insurance industry. Chocolate Fondue

Whether you’re planning a romantic evening with that special someone, or you want a fun and tasty treat for the whole family to enjoy, this Chocolate Fondue recipe is sure to be a Valentines hit! It’s easy to make, even without a fondue pot. Serve it with dip-ables such as strawberries or other slices of fruit, shortcake, pretzels, marshmallows, brownies or cookies. If you want to make a special adults-only version, try adding a couple tablespoons of Bailey’s or Amaretto for some extra flavor!

INGREDIENTS: 12 ounces of milk or dark chocolate (chips or roughly chopped if from a block) 1 Cup (8 ounces) of heavy whipping cream A pinch of salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the cream with a pinch of salt over medium heat in a small saucepan until tiny bubbles show and it begins to lightly and slowly simmer.

2. Remove from heat, add the chocolate, and whisk until smooth and full incorporated.

3. Immediately transfer to a fondue pot heated at low or with a low flame, or serve straight from the pot.

4. Arrange the dip-ables on a platter or plates around the chocolate pot. Use a fondue fork, bamboo skewer, seafood fork, or salad fork to dip the fruit pieces and other dippables into the hot melted cream chocolate mixture. Eat immediately. If the fondue begins to feel a little stiff, add a tablespoon of heavy cream and stir. It will help it go a little longer. *recipe reprinted from simplyrecipes.com

We all know that 2020 was a challenge in a multitude of ways, and at the very least it was one

heck of a ride! As we look back at 2020 and make plans for 2021, we both wanted to take a minute to say “Thank you!” We know there are many choices out there for your lumber and hardware needs, and we are so grateful to our community for choosing to shop local during this last year.

We feel blessed that you place your trust and confidence in our family business to help you with your home project needs. As a family-owned business, your patronage and friendship means so much to us, our families, and our amazing crew.

With a new year comes new products! 2020 was a change in purchasing for us as all of our trade shows were virtual. The new items from the fall show are starting to arrive, and this month’s ads are full of the new inventory. For our crafty woodworking friends our entire section of power tools received a well needed makeover. 2021 brings many new tools, including new DeWalt, Milwaukee, Skil, Senco, GripRite and Makita updated selections! Take a peek at the new DeWalt Planer we have in stock now.

So many fun projects have been happening, and we found a great new line of casters for those Pinterest projects. Shepherd Caster Corporation’s line of casters are now here with many styles to choose from, so stop in to see for yourself!

We still have some longer winter nights to get through, but the New Nebo LED Utility Lights are in and they are sure to be a bright spot! They screw into a standard light socket, and there are three adjustable light panels that rotate 90 degrees to light up any large area.

Nebo also has an awesome Emergency Prep kit that we now stock, which includes a solar panel, power bank, flashlight, and work light. After a year like 2020, we all know it’s best to be prepared! Toss this in the back of the car or tuck it behind your laundry room door for easy access in case of an emergency.

There are so many new items to check out and more coming in by the week, so be sure to come by soon and take a look at the changes happening in store!
