By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer Fireworks, BBQs, summer sun! Here are some tips to keep your pets safe and happy during these wonderful times.

Alcohol: Don’t leave alcohol unattended, as it can be

potentially poisonous to pets. If swallowed, they can become weak and intoxicated, depressed, or even go into a coma.

Respiratory failure is also possible. So keep those cans and bottles closed and up high!

Sunscreen & Insect Repellents: Perhaps obvious, but unless labeled for pet use these are NOT for pets. If these products are consumed, they can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, extreme thirst, and lethargy. DEET can also cause neurological problems. Citronella candles and similar products can also cause stomach irritation and nervous system depression if ingested, or aspiration pneumonia if inhaled. No fun!

Flames: Keep matches, lighters, and lighter fluid out of

Aurora Colony Days: Welcome Back!

I

t’s been 3 years since the last Aurora Colony Days. After a brutal 2019 winter and power outages, summer fires, COVID-19, then a long wet spring this year, Aurora is ready to celebrate the return of this event! On its 33rd anniversary, Aurora Colony Days commemorates the founding of Aurora way back in 1856 with food, music, fun, and community.

Aurora City Councilor Tara Weidman tells me this is a volunteer-run event, sponsored by local businesses and the City of Aurora. She’s quick to say she’s “so grateful for the people helping with this event,” and without these volunteers organizing the event would be impossible. After a tumultuous last few years, she says Aurora Colony Days 2022 is about bringing people together in a “high quality, tight knit” celebration of music, food, and more. So what’s Aurora Colony Days all about? There are 3 days of events, running August 12-14, in the quaint community of Aurora.

Friday August 12th, 4:30-10:30 PM, there’s the family-friendly Biergarten at the Old Aurora Colony Museum Courtyard, sponsored by the Aurora Colony Historical Society. This is a free event, and food and drinks will be available for purchase, including beer and root beer. You can also enjoy music from local musicians, Mae Day at 4:30 PM and Michele VanKleef at 7:30 PM. Saturday August 13th is the big day of events, including: Pancake Breakfast at the American Legion Hall, sponsored by the Aurora American Legion, 7-11 AM; Market in the Park, 8:30 AM-4:00 PM; Aurora Outdoor Antiques Market in downtown Aurora, 9 AM-4 PM; Aurora Colony Parade at 11 AM, starting north from Aurora City Park on Liberty Street, then south back to the park on Main Street NE; FREE ADMISSION to the Old Aurora Colony Museum, 11 AM-4 PM; Aurora Colony Car

Show, Aurora City Park, 12-4 PM; Concert in the Park with band Best Night Ever, Aurora City Park Amphitheater, 7-10 PM—a free event, food and drinks will be available for purchase.

Local author Evan Chandler Ahrendt will also be reading and signing books. The music will be absolutely incredible, with an opening acapella band, followed by Portland’s hot 10-piece pop rock and funk band, Best Night Ever.

But wait, there’s more! There will also be food throughout the entire day, including BBQ from Arlene Cuisine, Mexican from Lupita’s, and assorted roasted nuts from Pilgrim Nutz. Drinks will include: beer, cider, and mimosas from Pint Size Pub House; and flavored lemonade from Willamette Valley Berries. Among other treats, there will be strawberry shortcake with ice cream from Pitchpipers, flavored snow cones from Kona Ice, and assorted baked goods from Pastrysmith. And there will be the classic backyard game, cornhole, for kids and adults to play. There will also be a shuttle bus to keep you out of the heat, running every 12-15 minutes, around Aurora.

Sunday August 13th will feature the Colony Classic Disc Golf Tournament, presented by Aurora Parks and Recreation, 12-4 PM, with plenty of cash and sponsor prizes. Players of all levels are welcome, Registration is $10 from 11-11:45 AM, and Shotgun starts at 12 PM. It’s been too long since we’ve celebrated this event. Come for the food, drinks, music and local vendors, stay for the friends and community. Don’t miss Aurora Colony Days 2022!

POP CULTURE

Christopher Reeve:

Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)

Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys.

These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics!

Brandon Routh:

Superman Returns (2006)

The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody.

Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.

Henry Cavill:

Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)

Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. PROTECTING YOUR FAMILY AND HOME WITH

Fire-Resistant Landscaping Equally important is proper plant placement, plant spacing, and ongoing plant maintenance.

These practices, when combined, can create a fuel break and help protect your home by blocking intense heat. Flammable plant material in your landscape can increase the fire risk directly around your home.

The 1991 Oakland Hills fire in California is a prime example of how flammable plant material (Eucalyptus trees) can act as fuel and contribute to the intensity of a wildfire. More than 3,000 homes were destroyed in that devastating wildfire.

n the Pacific Northwest, fires are a natural part of the changing landscape. As homeowners continue to build in the wildland-urban interface, they must take special precautions to protect their lives, homes, and property.

One way to do this is to create a defensible space around your home. This is the area between your home or other structures,where potential fuel (materials or vegetation) have been modified, reduced, or cleared to create a barrier and slow the spread of wildfire toward your home. A defensible space also allows room for firefighters to fight the fire safely.

Three critical steps in creating a defensible space include using fire-resistant building materials (for example, roofi ng materials), reducing wildland fuels around the home, and using fire-resistant plant material in the landscape.

These actions DO NOT ensure that your home will survive a wildfire, but they substantially increase the chances.

TAKING ACTION When landscaping around a home, most homeowners are interested in creating a landscape that is aesthetically pleasing, complements their home, and has variations in color, texture, flowers, and foliage. When selecting plants, you also should consider the flammability of plants (i.e., fuel), particularly if your home is located in or adjacent to a forest or rangeland.

Homeowners should take active steps to minimize or reduce the fuel and fire hazard around their homes, including the use of fire-resistant plants in the landscape.

Characteristics of fire-resistant plants:

Characteristics of highly flammable plants:

 Leaves are moist and supple (bend easily).  Plants have little dead wood and tend not to accumulate dry, dead material within the plant.  Sap is water-like and doesn’t have a strong odor.  Sap or resin materials are low.

 There exists fine, dry, or dead material within the plant, such as twigs, needles, and leaves.  Leaves, twigs, and stems contain volatile waxes, terpenes, or oils.  Leaves are aromatic (strong odor when crushed).  Sap is gummy, resinous, and has a strong odor.  Plant may have loose or papery bark.

NOTE: Most deciduous trees and shrubs are fire-resistant.

WHAT ARE FIRE-RESISTANT PLANTS? Fire-resistant plants are those that do not readily ignite from a flame or other ignition sources. These plants can be damaged or even killed by fire; however, their foliage and stems do not significantly contribute to the fuel and, therefore, the fire’s intensity. There are several other significant factors that influence the fire characteristics of plants, including plant moisture content, age, total volume, dead material, and chemical content.

Both native and ornamental plants can be highly flammable. An example of a highly flammable shrub often planted in home landscapes is spreading or upright juniper. Avoid landscaping with highly flammable plants directly around your home.

Many professionals walked away, but Jen stayed even though “it was tough for a while.” Over the last few years and through the COVID pandemic, the market was strong again. Now with interest rates rising and the possibility of another recession, it looks like it’s heading into another tough cycle. “I will continue to weather this storm, and stay in it with my clients, because I love what I do—this is my passion,” she states.

“I’m not going to walk away from the industry now after all these years.”

Swan Island Dahlias: A Work of Heart “A beautiful garden is a work of heart”

t has become increasingly difficult over the past few years to find inspiration in the world, to find reasons to smile.

We have sometimes felt overwhelmed, gotten caught up in the negatives, and neglected to appreciate the simpler pleasures in life.

Quite literally, we have forgotten to stop and smell the flowers. In order to rectify that situation, though, we need look no further than our own backyards. Swan Island Dahlias, the largest and leading dahlia grower in the entire country, is located right here in Canby, and they want nothing more than to simply share the fruits of their labor with all of us and return that smile to our faces!

Established in 1927—with acreage in Portland and on Swan Island, hence the name—the farm was relocated to Canby in 1953. It was purchased by the Gitts family in 1963, and since then has doubled in size and scope. Still owned and operated by the Gitts family to this day, during the blooming season the farm boasts almost 50 acres of the most dazzling, varied, and unique dahlias you’ve ever seen. With 370+ varieties on display, and on average roughly 10 new varieties introduced every year, there’s always something new and exciting to be found.

Gitts Family Prior to the pandemic, the farm hosted a six-day dahlia festival every summer, split between two weekends. Since then, they have adapted to our advantage. Now Swan Island Dahlias is open to the public for two full months, from Aug. 1 to Sept. 30. It’s free to attend, free to park, and if the stunning, world-class assortment of gorgeous flowers isn’t enough to lure you, then perhaps the adorable gift shop will. If not that, then the food—anywhere from two to six food trucks are on site at all times, the educational classes (art, health and beauty, floral arranging, dahlia care, and more), or the entertainment (live music every Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 pm) certainly will. This is truly the hidden gem of the Willamette Valley. You don’t want to miss it.

I had the pleasure and privilege of speaking with Heather GittsSchloe, daughter of Nicholas and Linda Gitts (who currently run the farm) and granddaughter of Nick and Margaret Gitts, who initially purchased the farm back in 1963. Her passion and love for the farm was evident in every word she spoke. Some of us work to live, but clearly she and her family live to work (on this farm). The gratitude she expressed for being a part of something so sublime and so positive was inspiring, and her sincerest wish was only to share all of this with the community at large.

BOREDOM BUSTERS FOR A SUNNY SUMMER!

ids and adults alike CAN’T WAIT for summer to roll around every year. But without fail and after a few weeks, the phrases “I’m bored” and “There’s nothing to do!” are inevitable. Here are some fun things to do to BUST that summer boredom before it starts!

CLIMB A TREE

This might sound weird, but there’s no better way to feel like a kid or literally get into nature. Read a book or see how high you can climb!

PHOTOGRAPH

With modern cameras, almost anyone can take great photos. Look up a photo challenge or list of practice shots, and get out there. It’s actually quite fun!

TAKE A HIKE

Just getting outside in the fresh air is a great way to enjoy summer. Long or short, flat or steep, woods or beach, it doesn’t matter. Bring some snacks and drinks!

MOVIE NIGHT

Just the family, or invite friends over.

Pop some popcorn, bust out the candy and soda. For a real adventure, rent an outdoor projector and watch outside on a white sheet or blank wall.

PLAY A SPORT

Go to a local state or national park, the beach, or even your backyard! If you’re not a big camper (me neither), roast some marshmallows and hotdogs in a fire pit instead.

A favorite of mine and actually very easy.

You just need a blender, popsicle mold and sticks, frozen fruit and juice, yogurt, and honey or agave nectar. And it’s a healthy and fun way to eat fruit.

SWIM

When it’s finally warm enough to swim in the PNW, find a creek, river, lake, or local beach. If you don’t love swimming, at least get your feet wet, collect rocks or shells, or watch the wildlife.

No, not biking. Upcycling is where you take free old junk and make it into art or something useful, like a bathtub becoming a planter box. The possibilities are endless. Look online!

Anything from yard games like croquet or cornhole, to golf and tennis, sports are great for exercise, endorphins, and vitamin D. And an easy way to socialize and get outside.

PICNIC

Super easy, this just involves a basket or tote bag, snacks, drinks, and a blanket in your backyard or local park. Bring charcuterie (like quality salami and prosciutto), rare cheeses, fresh fruit, and cold drinks.

Fizzy Sherbet Punch

Cool off this summer with this creamy, fruity punch that's so easy to customize.

This one is filled with fruit, plenty of fizz, and enough sherbet to go around.

We love it for its simplicity and the fun pops of color it brings!

INGREDIENTS

3 c. ice 2 (2-L) bottles lemon lime soda 1/4 c. grenadine 2 c. pink lemonade 1 c. pineapple juice

2 c. pineapple chunks 1 c. sliced strawberries 1 qt. sherbet 1 c. maraschino cherries

DIRECTIONS

1. In a large punch bowl, add ice. Add lemon lime soda, grenadine, pink lemonade, pineapple juice, strawberries, and pineapples.

2. Top with sherbet and maraschino cherries and serve immediately.

◾ Start with low grit sandpaper, like 60 or 80, depending on the project and material being sanded, doing multiple passes.

Increase the grit count with each new pass. The higher the grit, the smoother the sandpaper.

◾ Use a belt sander if you have an excess of material to sand down, great for aggressive or time-consuming sanding jobs.

◾ Don’t skip grits. If you start at 80, you should go to 100, then 120, and more.

Skipping grits will force the higher grits to work harder to smooth out the material, wasting time and making the job more difficult.
