Woodburn & Hubbard Fire Districts To Share Resources

oodburn and Hubbard Fire Districts share resources and train together to better serve the residents of both communities. Recent agreements allow the 60 volunteer firefighters from both districts to serve interchangeably in both communities thereby establishing a larger pool of first responders to assist in emergencies. In addition, an intergovernmental agreement signed by the two district boards in June designates Hubbard’s Assistant Chief Michael Kahrmann as the shared Training Officer for both districts. This will allow the districts to establish specific standards, procedures, and engage in inter-district training.

One such training was hosted by Hubbard Fire District on July 13 on a vacant parcel in Hubbard’s industrial area.

The training, focused on tactics for wildland fires, helps prepare the volunteers to control and extinguish fires in the forest and grasslands. Hubbard firefighter Robert Gendhar stated, “These hands-on trainings are vital for keeping our volunteers prepared for all types of emergencies.”

Fire Chief Joe Budge shared, “Sharing resources is vital to the continued safety of these two communities. Both fire districts have much to offer one another and it is exciting to see us training together. As we plan for the future, I am looking forward to continuing to work closely with both districts as we determine what additiona l sharing of resources may look like. This will inevitably help to better serve the residents and property owners of both communities.”

or many pet parents, part of keeping your pet safe includes having them microchipped. Getting your pet microchipped is very important because it increases the chances they will be reunited with you in the event that they are lost or stolen.

However, microchipping is only really effective if the information in your pet’s microchip is kept up to date.

As a reminder about this important factor in your pet’s safety, the American Veterinary Medical Association would like to encourage all pet owners to observe National Check the Chip Day on August 15th. If your pet isn’t already microchipped, you should make an appointment with your veterinarian to have that done as soon as possible, and make sure the microchip is registered immediately.

If your pet is already microchipped, you should still take this opportunity to make sure their microchip is registered in the manufacturer’s database and that the information is up to date. To update your pet’s registration, you’ll need your pet’s microchip number.

If you haven’t already created an account with the manufacturer, you’ll need to do that as well so you can access the registration in the future to update the information. Make sure that all of the information is correct, particularly your phone number and address.

THE BURGER HUT BETT Y BOOP’S FAVORITE BURGER JOINT!

T

here’s something about those old 50’s diners that we love, isn’t there? Maybe it’s the nostalgia of looking back on simpler times, the homey and fun feel of the black-and-white checkered floors with the jukebox in the corner, or simply the deliciousness of the no-nonsense food and milkshakes they dish up. Whatever it is, these places are certainly special, and one of the best examples is right nearby: The Burger Hut in Hubbard. This place has all of those classic features that make old-time diners so iconic, with the added twist that it could be a museum of Betty Boop memorabilia!

The Burger Hut’s story actually goes all the way back to the 1930’s, when it was a diner known as Jiffy Way. Since then the place was bought and sold numerous times, the building has even been moved and the name changed, but what always stays the same is a dedication to serving the best American Diner food in a classic and comfortable setting. This is a place that has lived through the history it reflects, and it’s so authentic you might even expect to see Danny and Sandy sitting in the corner with the T-Birds and The Pink Ladies.

Although there were a lot of changes earlier on, things stabilized around 1980 when Tom and Gail McCain purchased the restaurant.

Tom is well known in the area, as he also owns the Texaco station next door to the diner and served as mayor for 3 consecutive terms. Under Tom and Gail’s ownership The Burger Hut became an icon in Hubbard, 8 To Advertise With Us, Call 503.825.2111

and with the exception of having to tear down the old structure and rebuild in 2007, it’s stayed the same place that residents know and love for over 40 years now.

Their daughter Judy Bundy has been working there since 1979 and now manages it. She witnessed firsthand when the new structure had to be built. “It was a necessity” she told me. “The old building had been there such a long time it had actually become somewhat dilapidated.” Judy says she still has such fond memories of it, that there was a certain charm to it that newer structures always seem to lack, and she was sad to see it go.

Nonetheless, the new building is such a cute and fun place for the whole family, and they did a great job restoring that old diner charm from bygone eras. Tom and Gail loved the 50’s theme. Every year they would go to “Hot August Nights” in Reno, and every year they’d bring back more stuff for the diner. The giant Betty Boop figurine that greets you just inside the door was one such purchase, along with many more Betty Boop collectibles that have sort of become the theme of the place. Judy says that many of the items have also come from customers who brought things in to add to the collection. Since Tom owns the gas station, he thought it would be fun to bring in some of the old gas station fixtures to add a slightly different flavor.

It’s a nostalgic medley that combines perfectly to create the right homey atmosphere.

Aside from the memorable decor, what really keeps everyone coming back is the food! As hinted in

the name, they are known far and wide for their fantastic burgers. These are the burgers you drive out of your way to find, the ones with that down-home touch; the old-school kind that remind you of your grandfather’s barbecues (except that grandpa never made them so good). Made with simple ingredients and great-grandma’s special sauce recipe, they can’t be beat.

It doesn’t stop with the burgers though, not by a long shot! They have fantastic crinkle-cut fries and amazing milkshakes made with real ice cream that come in almost any flavor. My favorite is the peanut butter shake which comes with real peanut butter mixed in, although the pineapple flavor (with real pineapple chunks) is another popular choice. They start with an ice cream base and then mix in whatever flavor you want. The best part is that even though the shake is served in the classic fountain shop glass, you also get all the left-over shake that’s still in the old-fashioned silver mixing cup. It’s almost like getting a whole extra shake, and certainly enough to share!

There are just too many fantastic options on their menu to list, but take our word for it - if you’re hungry for some classic comfort food that harkens back to yesteryear, this is the place to go. Like all other restaurants at this time, they’ve had to make some adjustments to stay in compliance with current health and safety guidelines. As such, their dining room is currently closed, but luckily they have a to-go window that allows for easy ordering and pickup, and they are still serving their full menu! Hours are also limited for the time being, and they are open from 10am to 6pm daily.

Tom, Gail, Judy, and the rest of the team are all eagerly awaiting the day they can open their doors to the public again, but in the meantime don’t miss out on the chance to support this local treasure. Okay, so we know they have awesome burgers, fries and shakes - all the diner classics. Check! What if you’re in the mood for something a little lighter? They have all kinds of freshly-made deli sandwiches and salads. Their Chef Salads in particular are incredible, loaded with delicious meat - they don’t skimp on the good stuff! Their Taco Salads are also fantastic and very popular. If you’re looking for something warm and hearty, try their home-made chili. It’s Gail’s own recipe that you can’t get anywhere else. Their breakfast is awesome as well, and it’s available all day. The specialty? Home-made biscuits and gravy, and it’s unbelievably delicious!

built a practice that truly does offer his clients the full spectrum when it comes to dental care. From basic routine exams and teeth cleaning, all the way up to complex procedures like getting braces or dental implants, they do it all right there.

Dr. Schuyler is one of those very lucky (and very unique) people who has known what he wanted to do from a young age. His story is an endearing one - as a child he had horribly crooked teeth, including a big gap between his front two. Kids being kids of course, he was teased mercilessly.

It wasn’t until his parents took him to an orthodontist that he found his saving grace. The orthodontist was an older gentleman who was great with kids, loved to tell stories and just happened to be friends with some former Trail Blazers. Not only did he fix Josh’s teeth, but captured his young imagination as well and ultimately inspired him to follow in his footsteps. Josh’s dream ever since has been to help others in the same way that he was helped.

He opened his practice in Woodburn in 2008, and he’s been taking care of happy patients there ever since. Much like the gentleman who inspired him as a child, Josh is known for his affable and easy-going personality. He loves getting to know his patients and making them feel at ease in his care. Dr. Schuyler also employs a terrific staff, including a second dentist, Dr. Jennifer O’Connor. His whole team is made up of people from the local area who have been with him for years.

It’s just a fact that a lot of people don’t enjoy going to the dentist, and some even have severe phobias about it. After talking with Dr. Schuyler, however, you’ll wish you needed to have your teeth cleaned! The office has a fun comfortable atmosphere and is staffed by kind and knowledgeable professionals. As mentioned before, his practice has been st r uc t u red so t hat they can address all of your dental needs under one roof. It’s not at all common for a family dentist to also specialize in Orthodontics. In fact, according to Google, only about 6% of dentists complete the additional schooling it requires to

This thing sounds like it came out of a sci-fi movie; the Terminator might use this machine to diagnose his own dental problems...you know, if the Terminator was suddenly concerned about his smile. What makes this machine special is that it allows them to actually see inside the tooth from all 3 axes. Most imaging systems only provide a 2D view, so by using this machine they are able to get a much more complete picture, and with a fraction of the radiation that most X-Ray machines put out. It’s also far more precise and the images are produced immediately, so there’s no waiting for results.

MEET THE ARTIST

Colleen Vancil

by Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer “We’re all born with an artistic side,” says local artist and teacher Colleen Vancil. There may be many people who would vehemently disagree with that assertion, usually with a roll of the eyes and a self deprecating comment about their own lack of artistic ability. However, Colleen may be right on the money. Perhaps it’s a natural desire to express ourselves, to reflect the world from our own unique perspectives or maybe it’s just a compulsive need to leave our mark but whatever the motivation, we are each born with an urge to create in some form or another. It’s likely only after being inundated with critical comments and criticisms that we take on the label of “unartistic.”

Colleen is our own local watercolor warrier who wants to change all that. She finds it very unfortunate that so many people think of themselves as inadequate or unworthy when it comes to the arts. Unwavered by those aforementioned moments of negative feedback in her own life, she has managed to nurture and maintain her artistic spirit throughout her adult life. In her 30 years of teaching K-8, she always made sure to incorporate art projects in her classes, carefully providing the appropriate amount of constructive criticism and instruction without extinguishing her students’ fragile flames of creativity.

She minored in art in college, and promised herself that she would pursue further instruction after retiring from her career in education. She fulfilled that promise 10 years ago when she signed up for painting classes. Specifically, she studied watercolors, which is a medium that is especially difficult to master, and for the next 7 years she took classes to perfect her technique. However, she never felt fully confident in her ability.

Now, luckily for all of us, Colleen is back to teaching! If you have any interest in rekindling your inner artistic spirit or finding it for the first time since childhood, or even if you have some experience with watercolors and want to hone your skills, I highly recommend signing up for one of her classes: “Watercolor Wednesdays.”

They are held at the Woodburn Art Center every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month, and cost only $10 per class. Anyone interested just needs to bring your own supplies (although they have limited supplies they can provide), a face mask, and a willingness to create. They even have exhibits where you can display your own pieces and potentially win prizes.

If there’s one lesson that’s most important to learn from Colleen it’s not to let the naysayers discourage you. Art is about personal creativity and self-expression, not about meeting a set standard or pleasing others. Beyond that, art can be a therapeutic journey of self-discover, which may be more important now than ever before. Meet Colleen and allow her to assist you in releasing your inner artist! It was just 3 years ago that she fully dedicated herself to the process and began practicing a minimum of 2 hours a day, almost 7 days a week. Like with any other skill, that proved to be the golden ticket. THE GREAT OUTDOORS!

ravel may be severely restricted at the moment and many summer vacation plans have had to be cancelled, but that doesn’t have to keep you from enjoying a getaway right here in our own backyard. Many State Parks and campgrounds have reopened, and Oregon is abundant with beautiful hiking trails that can be explored while maintaining safe distance from others.

Some parks remain closed and others may have limited access to facilities, so be sure to check the status of wherever you may be headed at stateparks.oregon.gov before you venture out. That being said, here are a few places nearby that are open and ready for visitors: Milo McIver State Park near Estacada is open for both day use and camping. This park allows for a huge variety of activities, including hiking, kayaking, fishing, horseback riding, disc golf, and more. With so many things to do, surrounded by the wondrous beauty of our home state, you may not even miss that cancelled exotic vacation after all. Be aware that there is a parking fee for day use areas, and reservations must be made for campsites on the state park website.

Halfway between Portland and Salem and just west of I-5 is the lovely Champoeg State Heritage Area. This site, where Oregon’s first provisional government was formed by a historical vote in 1843, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Situated on the south bank of the Willamette River, Champoeg offers much to be explored. Fishing, hiking, and disc golf are just a few of the activities that can be enjoyed

here. The park is open for day use with a permit from 8am to 9pm, although the Visitor Center and park office remain closed, and limited camping may also be available with reservations.

Silver Falls State Park is another gem of the Willamette Valley. For those looking for a good way to stretch their legs, the Trail of 10 Falls is a stunning hike that is known nationwide for displaying the tremendous beauty of Oregon, and it clocks in at just over 7 miles. There’s one important rule, though: for their own safety, pets are not allowed on this hike. However, there are other trails throughout the park that are not only pet-friendly, but also allow for mountain biking and guided horseback rides. The park is open for day use (parking permit required) and camping (with reservations) although some facilities remain closed.

Just as beautiful as the nearby Opal Creek Wilderness, but generally less crowded, the Little North Santiam Recreation Area also offers lots of ways to escape to nature. Although camping is not permitted at this time, there are dozens of places to spend a perfect day in the great outdoors, including the Canyon Creek and 3 Pools Recreation Areas.

If these spots are too popular for your taste, just take a hike!

Many of the trails offer access to hidden swimming and fishing holes that you can discover for yourself. Plan to bring plenty of water and snacks, as you’ll likely want to spend your whole day basking in the beauty of this glorious place. in the Pacific NW means that blackberries are abounding nearly everywhere. What better way to use up your abundance of local blackberries than making some delicious jam? There are many ways to do so, but this recipe is the easiest by far.

It’s made with just a few clean ingredients, thickened naturally with superfood Chia seeds, and the sweetener can be changed to fit nearly any dietary need, including paleo or keto options. Best of all, it takes only 20 minutes and there’s no canning required!

This jam tastes wonderful on toast or pastries, served with cheese, or as a dessert topping. 2. Stir in the sweetener, lemon or lime juice (if using), and Chia seeds. Cook the jam on low until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure you stir the jam so it doesn’t stick.

3. Remove jam from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (if using). Let jam cool to room temperature. Pour in a glass jar or air-tight container and store in the refrigerator. This jam will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It can also be frozen in an air-tight container.
