A

re you looking for a place with amazing food, awesome drinks, and a homey neighborhood atmosphere that will keep you coming back for more? Well allow me to inform you that the search is over, and this fantastic place is just a short drive up Hwy 99 in downtown Aurora.

The Aurora Colony Pub has been located in the heart of the town for what seems like forever, and if you ever drive north on 99E from Woodburn to Canby you’ve definitely seen it. You may have even been there before, but if you haven’t gone recently you may not recognize it.

Seven years or so ago, before Janae and Corey Barton purchased it from the previous owners, it was simply a humble local pub.

After taking over, the Bartons have revitalized, remodeled, and renovated the place, turning it into a much more family-friendly establishment. Of course, the full bar and all of the usual pub

activities and games are still available, but until 9:00pm kids and families are able to enjoy the establishment as well.

As the regular customers who have frequented the pub for years will attest, it’s always been known for great service, great drinks, and a friendly atmosphere, and they certainly haven’t lost any of their regulars due to the upgrades. They’ve simply improved upon every aspect of the business in the hopes of bringing in a wider customer base.

For starters, they’ve added a lot of amazing food to their already great menu. They still have all the traditional favorites that the pub had a reputation for, including their legendary made-fromscratch clam chowder, halibut fish and chips, fried razor clams and oysters, burgers, and hot sandwiches.

To give their customers even more to choose from, they are very excited to announce their brand new commercial broaster! This is not a common piece of equipment in most pubs, and there are

very few places in the area where you can get the delectable broasted chicken. The broaster works by deep-frying and pressure cooking simultaneously, which gives the chicken a nice crispy coating outside while maintaining all the natural moisture inside. If for no other reason, you must stop by to taste this culinary treat, because I guarantee that you’ll want to come back for more.

Do It Best! True to their brand, G.W. Hardware does just that. Located near Pacific Hwy. and Mt Hood Ave., G.W. Hardware is Woodburn’s “go-to” hardware store. Whatever “gizmo” you might need for your DIY project, chances are G.W. Hardware has it!

Founded in 1987, G.W. Hardware has been a mainstay in the Woodburn community for over 35 years. Michael Estrada, who bought the business a year ago, shares a slice of its history.

Michael explains that he is “kinda like family” to previous owner Mike Weiss. Mike operated the store for more than 30 years, having taken over from his father, Gary Weiss (the G.W. in G.W. Hardware). Michael Estrada’s a local, raised in Woodburn, and prior to purchasing the business he was an employee there for 15 years. Starting out stocking shelves, he worked his way up to department manager, then advanced to store manager, and finally became the store owner. Michael’s quick to acknowledge that he accomplished all this “under the mentorship and leadership of Mike Weiss, who taught me everything there is to know about the business.”

G.W. Hardware’s primary supplier, Do it Best (a memberowned co-op), has a warehouse just a mile from the store. With over 70,000 items to pull from, customers can pick up their

orders, next day, at no extra charge. The store is well-staffed with knowledgeable employees—many are retired professional tradesmen: plumbers, electricians, contractors, HVAC, etc.

Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy

Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.

Easter Bunny

According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!

Easter Eggs

From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children.

Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter.

Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners.

“The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’”

Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks.

Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls.

Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s.

Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes

its own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross.

“We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.”

Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh.

From elephants to mice, the metropolis of Zootopia is a melting pot where various animals live and thrive. When Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) becomes the first bunny on the Zootopia Police, she realizes how hard it is to bring order to a city of such chaos, especially when you feel so small. Determined to prove herself, Judy leaps at the chance to solve a mysterious case. She’s forced to work with a wily and sneaky fox, Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who makes her job impossible. But eventually the two discover, as a small bunny who was once bullied, and a fox who was treated as a thief before he even knew the word, they have more in common than they think!

Colonel Wellington B. Bunny is retiring as Chief Easter Bunny, and Peter and an evil bunny named January Q. Irontail are both vying for the job. Probably Gene Wilder’s best movie, and not an Easter movie, but the definitive movie about candy! Willy Wonka, after years of seclusion, hides a handful of golden tickets in random chocolate bars around the world, and if found, children will be given a tour of the famed chocolate factory. Of course, Charlie Bucket and Grandpa Joe are the only good people in a crowd of selfish brats and classless parents, as the group gets smaller by one after each tour stop and its ensuing lesson and misadventure. Weird, fun, and pure classic cinema.

is an invisible, odorless, colorless gas created when fuels (such as gasoline, wood, coal, natural gas, propane, oil, and methane) burn incompletely. In the home, heating and cooking equipment that burn fuel can be sources of carbon monoxide. → CO alarms should be installed in a central location outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and in other locations where required by applicable laws, codes or standards. For the best protection, interconnect all CO alarms throughout the home. When one sounds, they all sound.

→ Follow the manufacturer's instructions for placement and mounting height.

→ Choose a CO alarm that is listed by a qualified testing laboratory.

→ Call your local fire department's non-emergency number to find out what number to call if the CO alarm sounds.

→ If you need to warm a vehicle, remove it from the garage

STEP HARVEST LOLLIPOPS ON EASTER!

Well, we plant jelly beans the night before Easter and then overnight they magically grow into suckers! Does this have anything to do with the real reason for Easter? No. Do I need one more thing to try to remember? No. Do their smiles make it all worth it? Absolutely!

The shock and wonder on their faces is just so precious! They are absolutely amazed. With all the grief and stress in the world today literally being able to make magic is a gift that I have the ability to make happen for a few less minutes of sleep and a couple dollars of suckers and jelly beans. They are only little for a little while.

These photos are from 2020 when we were just 3 weeks into covid, I don’t know if you remember but we had one of the nicest, sunniest, warmest early springs I can remember! We had a small Easter; just us with the grandparents. They came over for a bit of socially distanced yard work and we hid Easter eggs probably six times. Daxon was three at the time. That Easter was the first holiday he really got into.

Later that day before bed he told me it was “...the best day ever!”

A visit to Nova Health’s Urgent Care clinic can potentially save you time and money by eliminating unnecessary trips to the hospital Emergency Room. For life threatening emergencies call 911 or go to a hospital emergency room. Nova Health Urgent Care is not a hospital emergency room.

Nova Health’s full-spectrum Urgent Care facility opened in Woodburn on January 11, 2022. The clinic, which includes an on-site lab and x-ray service, is conveniently located on Tom Tennant Dr. near the Hillsboro-Silverton Highway – just off Interstate 5. The Woodburn Urgent Care is Nova Health’s 19th location in Oregon, supporting the company’s reputation for offering “trusted care to those with immediate need.” The clinic is open seven days a week, with extended hours from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm to accommodate a broad range of patient scheduling. Same-day appointments are available, and walkins are welcome. RECIPE

Lemon Blueberry Cake This moist blueberry lemon cake contains three lemon cake layers with blueberries and is frosted with a refreshing whipping cream and cream cheese frosting, which again has blueberries and lemons.

INGREDIENTS

CAKE 1 (16.25 ounce) package white cake mix 1 ¼ cups water 3 egg whites 1/3 cup vegetable oil 2 teaspoons lemon extract DIRECTIONS

FROSTING 1 cup heavy whipping cream 1 (8 ounce) package cream cheese, softened ¾ cup white sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract FILLING 1/3 cup blueberry pie filling

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour two 8-inch pans.

2. Beat cake mix, water, egg whites, vegetable oil, and lemon extract together in a bowl using an electric mixer on medium speed until batter is well combined, about 2 minutes. Pour batter into prepared pans.

3. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted in the center of the cake comes out clean, 25 to 30 minutes. Cool in pans for 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.

4. Beat cream in a chilled bowl using an electric mixer until soft peaks are almost forming into stiff peaks; place bowl in refrigerator.

5. Beat cream cheese, sugar, and vanilla extract together in a separate bowl using an electric mixer until smooth and creamy. Fold whipped cream into cream cheese mixture.

6. Place 1 cake on a plate; top with blueberry pie filling. Place second cake atop blueberry filling. Generously frost cake with whipped cream cheese frosting.

or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation.

It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company.

Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl 46 To Advertise With Active Media, Call 503.825.2111

Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project.

Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility).

The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel.

Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives

today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride.

The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park.

The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds.

One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s.

In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment.

By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline.

Vanport, a town created during World War II to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the

decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park.

Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time.

When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster.

In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself.

So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.

The History of Linfield Football: A Streak of Greatness

you’re a fan of college football, doubtless names like the “Crimson Tide,” “Fighting Irish,” and “Buckeyes” require no explanation. They speak for themselves. However, if you don’t follow NCAA Division III football, you might not realize that one of the nation’s most successful football programs resides right down the street in McMinnville, Oregon.

None of the haloed Division I teams cited above can match the accomplishments of the Linfield University Wildcats.

It started on an autumn day, October 6, 1956. Great things often have humble beginnings, and for Linfield football this was certainly the case. While it would have been more dramatic if the Wildcats’ win that day had been defined by a scintillating highlight moment—a miraculous last minute catch in the endzone, or a gutty goal line stand—such was not the case.

No other team is even close to this record, with the next in line coming in at 42. In retrospect, Ward admits no one at the time had any idea of what was to come. “I guarantee you that in 1956, nobody had any idea there would be any kind of streak,” he said. “We were just happy that we could get through the season with a win.”It was coach Paul Durham’s team that started the “Streak,” but it is a testament to the pride, tradition, and dedication to excellence, fostered by successive coaches over the last six decades, that is

Linfield had just suffered back-to-back losing seasons, and the 1956 campaign looked like more of the same. The opponent that Saturday was the Seattle Ramblers, a semi-pro team on a tear, who had defeated the Wildcats the previous year, and dominated the conference titles over the last 14 seasons. Against the odds, Linfield managed to defeat the Ramblers 13-7. From that game on, the Wildcats wouldn’t lose another game that season. This win over the Ramblers marked the beginning of what has become known as the “Streak.”

Paul Ward, who played guard on the ’56 team, recalled: “Once we had a winning season, we knew we could win. We had to 52 To Advertise With Active Media, Call 503.825.2111

responsible for Linfield’s relentless march through the NCAA history books. Looming at the forefront of the Mount Rushmore of Linfield football coaches is Ad Rutschman. Hired as head football coach in 1968, Rutschman continued the winning tradition until his retirement in 1991. Rutschman not only coached football, but baseball as well. Rutschman is still the only coach at any level to win national titles in both football and baseball. In his 24 seasons as Linfield ’s head football coach, Rutschman won three NAIA national championships (1982, 1984, 1986), and 15 Northwest Conference titles. Perhaps Rutschman’s most epic victory occurred in the 1984 national

championship game, where Linfield trailed Northwestern 22-0 with just over three minutes left in the third quarter. Against all odds, the Wildcats roared back to win the game 33-22.

In addition to coaching football and baseball, Rutschman also served as Athletic Director for 25 years, during which time the school’s athletic facilities were greatly improved.

Among these improvements were two new gymnasiums, a baseball stadium, and the 26,600 square foot field house named in honor of Rutschman and his wife Joan, for their dedication and service over 27 years to Linfield University.

From 1992 to 2005, Linfield’s football program was led by Ed Langsdorf (1992-95) and Jay Locey (1996 -2005). Both coaches kept up the winning tradition. Langsdorf ’s brief tenure resulted in a record of 32-9-1 and three championships.

Locey’s tally at the end of his Linfield career was a stellar 84-18 and six championships, including one NCAA Division III title. During one stretch of his impressive career, Locey coached the team to a 41-game win streak.

So next fa ll, as Linf ield continues on its historic ma rch through the NCAA record books, take a moment to appreciate what six decades of commitment to family, grit, and excellence can achieve. As Coach Smith ref lected, “From Coach Durha m to Coach Rutschman, to now, the secret to this place has been that we have really good people coming and being part of a really good program. When you focus on excellence and put the team first and you’re a man of your word, great things happen.” The “Streak ” lives on!

“It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained. ‘We had to maintain who we are. If we lost that, we’re just another school’.”

In 2006, the future of Linfield football was turned over to Joseph Smith, and he has not only continued the “Streak” but pushed the school into the NCAA record books. Under Smith’s leadership Linfield has amassed an incredible record of 13827, with a .836 win percentage, the highest percentage of any coach in Linfield history.

When Smith, a former defensive back for Linfield in the 90s, took over in 2006, he was well aware of the legacy he was responsible for and described his role as that of a “caretaker.” With Locey’s departure, Smith understood that the decision to hire him had been carefully considered. “It couldn’t be someone from the outside to come in and run the program,” Smith explained.

The Smith era at Linfield has been nothing short of remarkable. For a school that offers no football scholarships, a modest budget for athletics, and typically doesn’t attract big time recruits with NFL aspirations and talent, the question remains: “How does Linfield do it?” How do the Wildcats continue to churn out victories, winning seasons, and championships? Ultimately, how do they keep the “Streak ” alive?

Smith credits a number of factors, foremost of which is the sense of family that permeates the entire Wildcat program. Caring for

and a thirst for excellence. Ryan Carlson, a defensive star on the 90s era teams, sums it up beautifully: “Once you’re in our Linfield family, you’re connected to 60 years of people who have had those core principles shape their young lives.

Those life experiences continue to breed an incredible amount of love and loyalty towards the program.” As inspiration to his players, Smith periodically invites guest speakers to address the team. One of the speakers, Bretton Brown, an Army Ranger and a friend of Smith’s, imparted words from the Rangers’ credo that resonated with the team: “We are Men of Action.

Prune back dead or dying tree or shrub branches using hand pruners or a handsaw.

Shape hedges with hand pruners (vs. electric shears) to prevent a thick outer layer of growth that prevents sunlight and air from reaching the shrub’s center. Prune summerflowering shrubs before buds swell, but wait to prune spring bloomers, like forsythia, until after they flower.

MIKE WOLF Mike Wolf is sure to be a familiar face to many patrons, as he’s been hand-selling goods to Long Bros. customers since August 2020. He primarily helps customers on the sales floor find anything and everything for their projects, general customer service, and day-to-day tasks that need doing. He says his favorite product to recommend to Long Bros. patrons are the screws and nails, because “seeing a full faced aisle is satisfying.”

In his free time, Mike enjoys spending time with his wife, Annette, and getting together with his two adult children, Ian (33) and Carlyn (30). He enjoys watching Netflix and the simple pleasure of mowing the lawn. His “bucket list” travel destination is Arkansas.

Rake out leaves and dead foliage (which can smother plants and foster disease), pull up spent annuals, and toss in a wheelbarrow with other organic yard waste. Once late frosts have passed, remove existing mulch for a new layer once spring planting is done.

Push heaved plants back into flower beds and borders, tamp them down around the base with your foot, or use a shovel to replant. You can also spread fertilizer on the soil’s surface so that spring rains can carry it to the roots.

LAWN CARE

Early spring is a good time to test the soil’s pH. Remove turf damaged by cold or disease to prepare for the seeding that should follow in a few weeks. Work in a ½-inch layer of compost to keep the new seed moist, increasing the germination rate. Begin seeding once forsythia starts blooming in your area. In warmer climates, March is a good time to add the first dose of fertilizer THIS MONTH’S

and crabgrass treatment. Remove dead turf with a square metal rake, then flip it over to spread compost.

PATHS & PATIOS

Rake escaped gravel back into walkways and patios and spread gravel in large depressions, which often form near the driveway’s apron.

Refill joints between flagstones by sweeping in new sand or stone dust; water with a hose to set it, then repeat. If the freeze-thaw cycle has heaved pavers out of place, remove them and replenish the base material as needed before setting pavers back in. Use a pressure washer with a low-pressure tip to remove algae spots or leaf stains from patios and walkways.

FENCES & TRELLISES

Remove rotted or damaged pickets, boards, or lattice, then clean wood structures with a mix of 2 gallons water, 2 quarts bleach, and 1 cup liquid soap; let dry. Patch rotted sections with wood epoxy; install new wood as needed.

Check wobbly fence posts to see if they need replacing. Scrape off old paint, then sand wood all over with 60 grit to prep for a new finish coat. Once temperatures go above 50° F, brush on a new coat of paint or stain.
