RECIPE

Healthy Berry Oatmeal Muffins Back-to-school season might have many of us scrambling to get back into the routine of normal life. Don’t forget to have healthy breakfast and snack options to easily grab on your way out the door. These healthy berry oatmeal muffins are filled with nutritious whole ingredients, and are so tasty that the kids will be begging for more!

INGREDIENTS

2 ¼ C Rolled Oats 1 tsp Baking Powder ½ tsp Baking Soda 1 tsp Ground Cinnamon ¼ tsp Salt

2 Large Eggs ¾ C Plain Greek Yogurt 1/3 C Almond or Cashew Butter 1/3 C Pure Maple Syrup

1 tsp Vanilla Extract ½ tsp Almond Extract (optional) 1 C Mixed Berries, Fresh or Frozen

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 425°F. Lightly grease a muffin tin with non-stick cooking spray, set aside.

2. In a food processor, pulse about 1/3 cup of the oats into a flour-like consistency. Pour the oat flour into a large mixing bowl along with the remaining oats, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. Set aside.

3. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk the eggs until the yolks and whites are fully combined. Whisk in the Greek yogurt, almond butter, maple syrup, vanilla extract and almond extract (if using) until smooth.

4. Slowly stir the dry ingredients into the wet until just combined. Fold in about ¾ of the berries.

5. Divide the batter evenly into the prepared pan. This will fill each tin almost to the top. Top each muffin with the remaining berries.

6. Bake for 5 minutes. Without opening the oven, reduce the heat to 350°F and bake for another 15-20 minutes, or until the edges of the muffins are golden brown and the tops are set. Remove from the oven.

7. Allow the muffins to cool for 5-10 minutes in the muffin tin before carefully transferring them to a cooling rack. Cool completely before storing. *recipe reprinted from macrostax.com

Woodburn Fire Welcomes Two Experienced Firefighter Paramedics

n Wednesday, July 21st the Woodburn Fire District welcomed two new career firefighter paramedics to the fire district.

Firefighter James Lang and Firefighter Jerrod Schuch have filled vacancies left by Lieutenant Darin Unrein and Firefighter Scott Mateson, who retired earlier this spring.

Both Lang and Schuch are seasoned fire service veterans with previous experience as career firefighter paramedics with Marion County Fire District #1, which borders the Woodburn Fire District to the south in the Brooks area. The new members will start their employment by undergoing a full year of comprehensive training in fire, rescue and emergency medical service skills. “Even though they come to us with extensive firefighting experience, the training is required to ensure that they are well versed in the procedures, tactics and equipment used by Woodburn firefighters,” commented Chief Budge.

“The extensive training by current Woodburn firefighters will ensure the ability to work seamlessly as a trusted member of the crew they are assigned to.”

Lang said he, “is looking forward to the team atmosphere at Woodburn Fire and he is excited to work for a family and community centered fire district.”

Schuch and his wife Amelia live in Silverton and are awaiting the arrival of their first child in August. Schuch commented that he feels like the Woodburn Fire District is the valley’s best kept secret and from his experience, Woodburn Fire members are very effective and he is excited to be working for a fire district known for their customer service, sense of community, and professionalism.

Lang and Schuch have joined Woodburn Fire following an extensive hiring process that began earlier this spring with an announcement that attracted 72 applicants. The top 30 applicants from an initial written test were invited to an assessment center that evaluated candidates’ education, experience, and their firefighting and emergency medical skills. Following the assessment center, the candidates were placed in ranked order on a hiring eligibility list. Lang and Schuch came out high on the list and were invited to further interviews and comprehensive background checks.

“I am excited to have these two members join the fire district,” commented Chief Budge. “I think they have the right experience, values, and skills to become an welcome important part of ensuring the safety of the to the team, communities we serve.”

In addition to extensive firefighting credentials, Lang and Schuch are certified and experienced paramedics. The Woodburn Fire District began providing advanced life support service in 2019 following voter approval of a 5-year local option levy.

Advanced life support by paramedics brings many life-saving JAMES & JERROD! capabilities within minutes to those that experience a medical emergency. The hiring of members already certified as paramedics saves the district the cost of providing 14 additional months of paramedic training and helps make good on the fire district’s commitment to area voters to have at least one paramedic on-duty at all times.

hese days, there are a thousand-and-one reality shows on TV showcasing the artistry of high quality cake baking and decorating, but when you look around the Portland Metropolitan area, there don’t seem to be many bakeries that specialize in it. That’s why it’s so exciting to discover that we actually do have just such a place just a short drive north on I-5. Lux Sucre Desserts is a fabulous bakery located in Charbonneau, which is not only more than capable of competing at the highest level when it comes to amazing baked goods and pastries, but is also locally owned and operated!

Chanelle Walters is the wonderful wizard behind the bakery curtain. Like so many of us, she started off on an entirely different career path before finding her true purpose. She had always enjoyed baking, but it wasn’t until she started getting requests from friends and family that she began to think of it as more than just a hobby. Her day job didn’t inspire her, so she took the cue from friends and family and focused more intently on the possibility of going professional.

Out of necessity, she continued at her previous job while taking on as many side jobs baking for birthdays and weddings as she could, while also putting herself through school at the Oregon Culinary Institute. What’s truly impressive about Chanelle is how shrewdly and intelligently she has handled herself throughout this whole process.

She never bit off more than she could chew; she held onto her day job until it was clear that this endeavor could sustain her; she started small, sharing a kitchen and work space while she honed her craft and learned the ropes, and steadily the business grew!

Along the way, she met Brandon Walters, the man who is now her husband. Like Chanelle, he didn’t start off on this path, but he did have experience in business and as Lux Sucre Desserts expanded, he came on board. They are a dynamic duo, running the business together; her behind the counter and him behind the computer! And still the business grew.

Once it was clear they had outgrown their original shared space, they searched for a solo retail location where they could really spread their wings, eventually finding their current space in Charbonneau.

Once again, Chanelle (and Brandon) made intelligent choices: purchasing only the most crucial equipment and only as they could afford it, building things up slowly and organically as sales warranted. She and Brandon and their folks even painted and decorated the place themselves. And so the business grew!

Cakes, Cupcakes, Cake Pops, Smash Cakes, Wedding Cakes, Cinnamon Rolls, Sweet Rolls, Cookies, Macarons, Tartlets… the list goes on. Decadent, rich, and delicious, each item is made with the utmost care and commitment to excellence. They are a butter-based bakery and make everything from scratch… and I mean everything!

Gorgeous, intricately designed cakes are the major product, of course, but one of the things that really sets Lux Sucre apart from the pack is that they also do so much more!

Chanelle was actually at the cutting edge of a trend which is just now becoming the norm, and that is offering “dessert tables.”

These have become a huge trend in the wedding scene, and it involves so much more than just a cake. You have a cake, but you also have an entire spread with a variety of other desserts to choose from, all incredible, all made on site!

based out of McMinnville, and the tea comes from Jasmine Pearl Tea Co. based out of Portland. They can do any kind of espresso-based coffee drink you like and they typically have upwards of at least 16 flavors of loose-leaf tea available which they brew fresh on the spot.

Lux Sucre truly is a local gem, owned and operated by local people who love and support the local community. They pride themselves on working with local school districts and cat-rescue missions (Meow Village especially) on various fundraising events.

ack to school is a difficult time of year for many pets, even in normal circumstances.

But after a year and more of shutdowns and inconsistent school reopenings, our furry family members have gotten used to having us home more than not, so this fall they may have even more trouble coping with being left alone.

Here are a few ways to help them adjust:

CREATE AND STICK TO A ROUTINE Especially if your animal is prone to anxiety, a consistent routine can be important in order for them to feel secure and stable. Start getting them adjusted to the new schedule a few days in advance by waking up, feeding them, and walking them at consistent times each day. If your dog is going to daycare, be sure to take them in for short amounts of time to get them used to it before leaving them all day.

If a pet is left alone all day they may have pent-up energy that can become destructive in an empty house. Try to give them some activity before leaving each day, or make sure they get to wear themselves out later in the day. A tired pet is a happy and calm pet.

STAY CALM For both children and pets, separation can be stressful. Both can also sense emotional distress in others and they’ll take their cues from you. So make sure to stay calm yourself, and reassure your child of their concerns so they can stay calm as well.

A surefire way to ensure your pet gets into something they shouldn’t is to leave them alone and bored, so invest in some distracting toys or activities for them to enjoy. There are a huge variety of interactive puzzles and treat toys to explore online.

Leaving some music on to break the silence or hiring a dog walker will also help break the boredom.

The Autumnal Equinox ushers in a change of season. It is observed annually when the sun can be seen directly overhead along the equator. The day marks the end of summer and beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere.

After having been open less than a year, she needed an assistant, and hired Ginny Lundy to help with the behind-the-scenes stuff. A few months later, they outgrew their original location (at the Bell Building) and moved to their current location on 99E. Not even a year after that, she hired a 2nd assistant, Desiree Sutton. Desiree is actually a licensed loan officer herself, writing loans alongside Vanessa, but also assists with many of the front-end tasks such as pre-approvals, verification of employment on applicants, etc. She has proven to be equally valuable to the team. “I literally couldn’t do this without the assistance of both Ginny and Desiree. or those of you following along with us regularly, we were pleased to feature an article introducing you to Mid-Valley Auto Body & Service Center back in our February publication. At that time, owners Alfonso Herrara and Sandra Herrara-Alonzo had just purchased and rebranded the business a few months prior, and everyone living in or around Woodburn probably still remembered it under its previous moniker, Ken’s Auto Body. Alfonso and Sandra have worked tirelessly to both honor Ken’s legacy and build their own brand, and now a year after they took the reins, they are going stronger than ever!

If you read our initial article, you’ll know that Alfonso comes to the table boasting some amazing credentials. Not only does he have years of experience working in the automotive industry (6 of them working directly with Ken managing this very shop), but he also has experience working as an insurance claims adjuster. S

ome have suggested that art is a window into the soul. Local artist and philosopher J.R. Slattum would argue that art is not a window; it’s not merely a reflection of what resides in the mind of the artist. Instead, it’s a doorway, one which accesses not only the mind of the artist but also the universal mind. Once opened, the artist is free to enter, explore, and bring back souvenirs; universal nuggets of wisdom which, with a proper commitment to the creative process, can be expressed and related to others in a visual form.

J.R.’s art is just that - a visual representation of his ongoing journeys within. As quoted from his bio page, “The mind is a universe. Ideas are alive. These [referring to his paintings] are the travels.”

J.R. is one of the most interesting people you’ll ever meet.

Incredibly thoughtful, introspective, and intellectual, he’s the kind of person whose mind never rests. You can tell that he is always thinking, contemplating some deep spiritual or philosophical conundrum, trying to work something out. But as it is in life, so it is in art. That’s his process.

He told me he spends upwards of 200 hours planning a piece. It starts with a session (or multiple sessions) of doodling, streamof-consciousness type drawing, letting the doodles go where they want to go. He “listens” and pays attention without forcing it until something begins to crystalize. Inevitably, an image appears, something channeled through his subconscious, something that inspires him conceptually, and then it’s just a matter of discovering how best to represent the idea on canvas.

His work is rich in tone, vibrant in color, and fascinating in concept.

The pieces are not overly complex or detailed in their presentation, but they are all the more striking in their simplicity. There is warmth and depth in the imagery that stops you in your tracks. You can’t help but get sucked into his alternate universe; a universe which is simultaneously alien and all too familiar to our own. As he explains so eloquently, J.R.’s pieces are “visual philosophy,” and thankfully he has invited us all along for the journey.

This is something J.R. was born to do. As a child, he loved drawing and wanted nothing more than to be an artist when he grew up.

As it tends to happen with so many of us, however, he “learned”

to be more pragmatic with age, and eventually abandoned art altogether. Dark times followed. It wasn’t until he had a near-death experience of sorts that he came to realize that art was his true calling. He reprioritized and made a commitment, and he turned the darkest period of his life, what could have potentially been his end, into a triumphant return to bliss. And he made it a career in the process!

Preventative maintenance on your home can help you avoid major problems and save time, money, and stress, so go through this checklist and make sure your house is in tip-top shape before bad weather hits. REMOVE GARDEN HOSES FROM FAUCETS

Leaving hoses attached can cause water to back up in the faucets and the pipes just inside your exterior walls. If freezing temps hit, that water could freeze, expand, and crack the faucet or pipes. Turn off any shutoff valves on water supply lines that lead to exterior faucets, and drain garden hoses and store them in a shed or garage. If you have a sprinkler system, that needs to be drained as well.

SEAL AIR LEAKS AROUND YOUR HOME

Grab a couple of tubes of exterior caulk and make a journey around your home’s exterior, sealing up cracks between trim and siding, around window and door frames, and where pipes and wires enter your house. Preventing moisture from getting inside your walls is one of the least expensive and most important of your fall maintenance jobs. You’ll also seal air leaks that waste energy.

Clogged rain gutters can cause ice dams, which can lead to expensive repairs. After the leaves have fallen, clean your gutters to remove leaves, twigs, and gunk. Make sure gutters aren’t sagging and trapping water; tighten gutter hangers and downspout brackets. Replace any worn or damaged gutters and downspouts.

CHECK YOUR ROOF

Look for warning signs: Shingles that are buckled, cracked, or missing; rust spots on flashing. Any loose, damaged, or missing shingles should be replaced immediately.

Black algae stains are just cosmetic, but masses of moss and lichen could signal roofing that’s decayed underneath.

Take a close look at the soil around your foundation and make sure it slopes away from your house at least 6 vertical inches over 10 feet. That way, you’ll keep water from soaking the soils around your foundation, which could lead to cracks and leaks.

CHECK YOUR FURNACE

Schedule an appointment with a heating and cooling pro to get your heating system checked and tuned up for the coming heating season. Change your furnace filters, too.

This is a job you should do every two months anyway, but if you haven’t, now’s the time.

PRUNE YOUR PLANTS

Late fall is the best time to prune plants and trees, when the summer growth cycle is over. Your goal is to keep limbs and branches at least 3 feet from your house so moisture won’t drip onto roofing and siding, and to prevent damage to your house exterior during high winds.

CHECK YOUR FIREPLACE

Grab a flashlight and look up inside your fireplace flue to make sure the damper opens and closes properly. Open the damper and look up into the flue to make sure it’s free of birds’ nests, branches and leaves, or other obstructions. You should see daylight at the top of the chimney. Check the firebox for cracked or missing bricks and mortar. If you spot any damage, order a professional fireplace and chimney inspection. *info from houselogic.com
