EXPERIENCE THE ART OF ‘SCAREOLOGY’ WITH THE LOCAL AFICIONADO OF: By Donovan Darling, Active Media Contributing Writer tarted back in 2002 as a “vacation income generator,” Milburn’s Haunted Manor was first run by Mike Milburn and his family, starring his daughter and son and the Drama Club from North Marion High School. In the first year they sold 900 tickets! Each year it “grew a little more and grew a little more,” Mike said. Over time they started including more athletic clubs, such as Woodburn Boys and Girls Soccer and North Marion Girls Soccer, whom Mike said are goal-oriented, “tireless and dedicated” volunteers. And the volunteers come back year after year, well into adulthood, and sometimes whole families get into the spirit. Milburn’s Haunted Manor is Oregon’s #1 Haunted House, a family-owned annual attraction and pumpkin patch that has been “scaring guests from Portland to Salem and the greater Willamette Valley for the past 18 years.” At the Haunted Manor you’ll find: two haunted attractions; a moonlit pumpkin patch; the Graveside Grill for carnival treats like fresh cut curly fries, donuts, sausage, hot apple cider, and more; free parking; covered commons, lines, and dining for rain; graveled paths; and a u-take/we-take photo booth. They are located just outside of Hubbard, 30 minutes from Portland or Salem. Mike joked, “Where the heck is Hubbard, Oregon?” Mike is deeply passionate about the haunt experience, scare psychology and technique, which he has taught classes on and calls Scareology. His love for the fantastical began as a dungeon master while playing Dungeons & Dragons with his childhood friends, whom he still plays with today. As a dungeon master, he learned to create scenarios and narratives and “always had a pretty good lock on how to scare people.” Mike is largely self-taught, but he draws inspiration from legendary haunt designer Leonard Pickel and filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. He takes a “theatrical approach to scaring,” using an uncanny attention to detail, misdirection, lighting, and careful pacing, and claims his attraction is more “a Hitchock haunt than a slasher.” Rather than the more linear jump-scare haunts which focus on big crowds and fast pacing, Mike likes to “attack you differently” and play with suspense. A haunt designer of 18 years, Mike Milburn is a frequent host of the West Coast Haunters Convention and has been paid to design professional haunt attractions. It’s no surprise his Haunted Manor has become legendary. What exactly is it like at Milburn’s Haunted Manor? Mike calls this an “intimate scare experience” compared to the city’s mega-sized and overcrowded haunted houses. “[His] passion is to create a more individualized scare experience” in a creepy country setting. Some of the scary things you’ll see are the mascot Suzie One-Eye, zombies, creepy clowns, and axe-murderers. Both attractions, The Manor and The Dark, are critically acclaimed. The Manor is a classic haunted house, highly theatrical, with a story and a large cast of actors. The Dark is more moody, dark and claustrophobic, and full of jump scares. risp air and turning leaves always means family fun at French Prairie Gardens during the fall season. There are plenty of activities for all ages, and the activity they’re most famous for is the Pigtucky Derby Pig Races. The Pigtucky Derby Race is really something special. The pigs are lined up, not unlike

horses at the Kentucky Derby, except dressed in mud and bandanas around their necks. Once they’re off, the auburn pigs race through a winding grassy muddy track to their hearts’ content, and right beside the track is seating for the whole family. Once you’ve seen the pigs come a’running, the classic Pumpkin Patch is open and running from October 2 through 31 for the perfect jack-o-lantern or seasonal decor with 20 varieties of pumpkins. There’s also the incredibly impressive mazes, of which there are four! The Corn Maze, Sunflower Maze, Rope Maze, and Kid’s Hay Maze. The slides are great for all ages too, including the Tube Slide and brand new Super Mega Ride ‘n’ Slide. The kids can enjoy countless

activities like the Pig Barrel Train Ride, Pedal Karts, Tire Swings, Jump Pad, Hamster Rollers, Obstacle Course, and Farm Ninja Course. Halloween is a favorite holiday for many people, but like many other holidays, it can be stressful and even dangerous for pets. Keep these tips in mind to help your furry family members stay calm and safe! BE CAREFUL WITH DECORATIONS & PROPS Keep wires and battery packs out of reach, or they might be mistaken for chew toys. Uncooked or moldy pumpkins can make pets sick, so don’t let your jacko-lantern become a snack. Candles should be kept in places where they can’t be knocked over.

PET COSTUMES AREN’T ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA Although animals in costume are adorable, your pet’s comfort and safety is more important. If your pet is ok with getting all dressed up, avoid a costume that uses rubber bands or toxic materials, and make sure the costume doesn’t obstruct breathing, hearing, sight, or movement. Also, be sure that your pet is under supervision at all times while in costume. If your pet hates wearing a costume and becomes distressed, don’t force it on them.

et’s face it, folks, 2021 has been a scary year! In the wake of 2020, I think perhaps we were all lulled into a false sense of security, assuming 2021 could only be better. And while it hasn’t necessarily been much worse (we have seen a slowdown in COVID-related death rates, after all!), it also hasn’t been much better. So how can we combat those gloomy clouds hovering above, threatening to rain all over what remains of 2021? Well one way is to embrace a little scariness just in time for the Halloween season, and head on over to Scare Fair: Harbinger of Souls, going on at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds this October! Partnering for the second year in a row with Portland’s own Creatures of the Night, Marketing Coordinator of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Tyler Nizer, is proud to announce that this year you can fight COVID or seasonalrelated ennui by attending their fully immersive walk-through haunt! Last year these two organizations united to bring us the first drive-through haunt, and it was so successful that they are returning and revitalizing the event this year; and it will be bigger, badder, and better than ever! Plus now you get to walk through instead of drive for more up-close and personal scares! Creatures of the Night is an allvolunteer local organization of haunted entertainment consultants which has been in existence since 2013. They partner with local community organizations to raise funds and make entertainment to support local businesses and bring communities together. Artistic Director, David D. Jones, is incredibly enthusiastic about his work and, in particular, about bringing people together in a time when we have been so isolated. He is grateful for the partnership they’ve developed with the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, and he’s especially excited to bring the scares! According to their website: “Creatures of the Night connects

communities and families through a feeling of wonder and trepidation. Creatures’ highest priority is safety – of the physical surroundings and internal process – for the actors and our guests. In our method of storytelling, we believe it is the inner child that is on a journey of challenging and overcoming fears, both physical and internal. Every participant is always in control of the experience and their level of comfort.” This is where Creatures of the Night has separated themselves from the pack. Not only are they the first company to use 360 degree photography and Augmented Reality in their haunts, but they are also the first and only company in Oregon to provide customers with a customizable experience! They have incorporated an extra feature that is referred to as the Creature Candle. The candle can be adjusted by each group to align with their level of comfort, so if you like it really scary, you can turn the candle down low. If you prefer it less scary, you can turn it up brighter; the idea is that you are in control. In order to ensure that every visitor has the perfect experience for them, the candle will be available for purchase before you start your tour. This year, the theme of the tour is “Harbinger of Souls” and you will encounter several souls at the event, including: Mary (a young woman in a white dress who haunts the rivers and forests), Ole Clem (a riverboat captain), the Cultists (mysterious figures in robes), Mark Forth (a WWII deep sea diver who went missing somewhere along the Willamette and still haunts it to this day), the Pacific Northwest Lake Monster, and the Caretaker (your guide). The Willamette Valley has a long and dark history. Older fisherman have spoken of the strange and the bizarre; of robed

figures skulking about the land adjacent to the river; of large monstrosities with elongated necks piercing the water’s surface in search of food; of retrieved fishing nets full of repulsive and horrible treasures. Only a girl in a white dress holding a candle offers hope and possible sanctuary. Although it’s never been confirmed, this girl seems to guide those who are in danger or who are lost to safety. Trust her at your own peril! This event is one of remarkable, family-friendly fun and entertainment! Being customizable, the experience can be as scary or as light-hearted as you’d like for it to be, but what they will not sacrifice is anyone’s safety. That is the number one priority for both Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Creatures of the Night. That means masks are required, social distancing will be practiced, and hours will be limited, but you

can still expect tons of fun and an incredibly immersive experience! Groups will be limited to 4 (as David states, that’s not only the safest but also the best way to experience the tour) so plan accordingly. Hours of operation are FridaySaturday, 7-10pm starting October 1st and running through the end of the month. For the little ones, Haunts Junior is a more kid-friendly, Scooby-Doo type experience that will be open from 6-7pm on Saturdays. Family Traditions ... My favorite family traditions are actually the random get togethers – not the big holidays on the calendar. I come from a BIG family and had the blessing of growing up with tons of cousins, all very close in age. I’ve many times been told I have an old soul. Growing up without screens and having jam packed year-round sports schedules gave us the time to make memories having good old-fashioned fun! With my family, October always brought a day of pumpkin carving that was taken to a whole different level! My grandparents lived on a main corner in town [pictured here]. We grew our own pumpkins in our family garden behind the house. This display was one of my grandma’s creations! I hope you enjoy these pictures as much as I did when we pulled them out. Do you recognize the house? Many of my readers will :) As our kids grow up, I’m hoping for lots of chances to carry on these traditions with them! eing a “child of the Internet” and social media savvy, Crystal whipped into action when COVID hit and kept busy networking and creating. “I began making content with friends,” she said. “Auditions were all self-tape, so I was able to audition for jobs easily without worrying about commute time and other obstacles.” Crystal’s résumé is long and deep. A native of Binghamton, New York, she is an accomplished screen actor, voice artist and model, and she’s also comfortable behind the camera: Crystal has produced and directed, and she’s currently working on a web series called Spearheading, where she plays a character who is kidnapped for ransom but “starts running the show.” “It’s one of the funniest projects I’ve ever worked on,” she said. “We are hoping to put it through the film festival circuit this year. I’m also the lead in a feature film, Seventy One Percent. I don’t want to give too much away on that one, but we filmed it at the Oregon Coast. I’m very excited for people to see it.” It’s an artistically-rich life for a woman who initially planned a career in medicine. She graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in neuroscience and pre-health. “I’ve had a secret passion for performing my entire life,” she says. “My aunt, Darlanne Flugel, was an actress. She inspired me from a young age.” “I realized how unhappy I was and knew I needed to make a change and start pursuing my passion of being a performer.”

Initially drawn to dramatic work and horror, Crystal discovered she loved playing comedies. As an actor, she’s laid on the cold ground covered in fake blood, done an ATV chase on camera and even sniffed fake cocaine. “It’s something called inositol powder,” she said. “They use it in Hollywood. It stung a bit and tasted like sugar.” Crystal’s training is also extensive: She’s done scene study work, improvisation, character analysis, and acting techniques such as Meisner, Strasberg and Stanislavski. She also speaks French and can pull off an Irish (Cork) or British (Standard and Cockney) accent. When she’s not working, she enjoys Krav Maga, photography, hiking and backpacking. Along with her producing and directing credits, Crystal’s Internet Movie Database (IMDb) page lists more than a dozen films she acted in and another three that are in development where she will perform. Clearly, she keeps busy: An agent in the Pacific Northwest handles her regional work, while another in New Mexico submits globally on her behalf. “I am open to traveling anywhere for well-paid work,” she said. Scarecrow Cookies Enjoy these Halloween-style cookies that are creatively shaped to look like scarecrows.

INGREDIENTS

1/4 C Betty Crocker™ Ready-To-Spread Vanilla Frosting 10 Creme-Filled Vanilla Sandwich Cookies 5 Baked Whole-Grain Wheat Crackers, Cut In Half 1 Tablespoon Sugar 10 Large Gumdrops 10 Pieces Candy Corn Black Decorating Gel

DIRECTIONS

1. Spread 1 slightly rounded teaspoon frosting on each cookie. For each scarecrow cookie, cut half cracker into shreds with sharp knife; place shreds on 2 sides of each frosted cookie to resemble hair. 2. Sprinkle work surface with sugar. Place 1 gumdrop on its side on sugar; flatten with rolling pin into 1/8-inch-thick triangle. Fold up one edge to form hat brim; place on cookie, trimming to fit if necessary. 3. MULTI-DISTRICT FIRE RESPONSE TO

The Aware Food Bank Fire

uick and effective action by Woodburn firefighters on Monday afternoon saved the Aware Food Bank from a fast moving arson fire that was started on the outside of the building and spread quickly to the attic area.

Firefighters were dispatched to the two-alarm commercial fire in Woodburn’s old town district at 3:21 pm. The first arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the large warehouse. Woodburn firefighters stretched hose lines into the interior, and encountered fire in the wall adjacent to the exterior where the fire started and extensive fire expansion into the attic. As one crew worked on exposing and extinguishing the wall fire in the warehouse area, a second crew quickly located the stairs to the attic and extinguished the fire that had involved about 25 percent of the large open space. Chief Budge stated that, “If another 5 to 10 minutes had passed before crews advanced into the attic, the entire roof structure would have been involved in fire, which could have forced the withdrawal of the interior crews due to the potential for collapse of the roof structure.” That would have resulted in a total loss of the structure. When the firefighters from Engine 21 advanced into the attic space they had zero visibility and high heat conditions, but they quickly got the fire there contained. Crews from surrounding fire districts rotated into the interior firefighting positions to extinguish the remaining fire and the incident was brought under control at 4:25 pm. The fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 in damage to the structure and contents, was intentionally started in the dry grass and shrubs on the first avenue side of the building. Woodburn police used video from security cameras to identify a suspect that was taken into custody before the fire was brought under control. The first arriving firefighters were student resident volunteers Jared Redman and Noah Wierstra, who are assigned to Fire Station 22 on James Street in Woodburn. Student volunteers are full-time fire science or paramedic college students that are provided a place to live at two of the district’s four fire stations in exchange for the emergency response assistance that they provide to area residents. The students charged the hose line and forced open the access door, and were immediately supported by career firefighters as they made entry into the building to fight the fire.

“We are very proud of the work that our students did in preventing the destruction of this Old Town landmark and important community service,” commented Woodburn Division Chief Heesacker, who arrived less than one minute after the student staffed Engine 22 and took command of the firefighting effort. “When the students arrive first, we teach them to get everything ready for fire attack, look for rescue needs and wait for help before entering a burning structure.” The district is currently recruiting students to replace two that recently graduated from school and accepted jobs as career firefighters in Kansas. The fire district’s student program is a great way for college students to receive real world experience to supplement their academic studies and skill training, commented Heesacker. Woodburn firefighters were assisted in extinguishing this fire by firefighters from Hubbard, Aurora, St. Paul, and Canby. When a large fire occurs, resources from the closest fire stations are automatically dispatched, regardless of which district the fire is located in. The rapid fire control would not have been possible without the help of neighboring fire agencies. Volunteer members of Woodburn’s CERT team responded to provide firefighter rehab services, and Long Bros. Building Supply donated refreshments to the firefighting crews. The much needed hydration, cooling and medical evaluation provided by the donations and CERT volunteers was especially appreciated with ambient air temperatures near 90 degrees when the fire occurred. The City of Woodburn is partnering with Marion Polk Food Share, which operates the food bank service, to reduce the disruption of the valuable community assistance provided at this site.
