If you are a regular, they welcome you back. If this is your first time, you’ll soon discover this is a great place to hang out and have fun.

Instructor Feature Sarah began teaching at Concert School of Music shortly after graduating from Marylhurst University in December 2017, with a Bachelor’s degree in Music. She teaches piano, flute, clarinet, recorder, and singing. Music has been an integral part of Sarah’s life since she was very young, and she understands the importance music has on people’s lives. While she’s always had a deep love for music, she first began playing an instrument when she was introduced to the clarinet in her 5th grade band class.

In high school she learned an assortment of different instruments and taught several beginning band classes at summer camp. She wrote her first composition when she Sarah was fourteen and instantly fell in love with the process of creating new music that had never been heard before. Currently she is writing a soundtrack for a video game and singing with the small vocal ensemble, Voci Dorate Singers. She enjoys working with students of all ages and experience levels, from beginning four-year-olds to adults who have been playing music for years. She customizes lessons to help students reach their own goals and believes that learning music should be fun and exciting.

This race car is the culmination of an ego-driven act of revenge that changed the face of motorsports in the 1960s. Ford, looking for an image boost, entered into merger discussions with Enzo Ferrari only to be rebuffed at the last minute. After finally breaking through to win Le Mans in 1966, Ford unleashed the American designed and constructed Mark IV in 1967.

While it only raced twice, it won both races convincingly.

Celilo Falls: Parallel Lives Along N’Chewana Presented by Native Consultant Ed Edmo and Lani Roberts, retired OSU professor. In “Celilo Falls: Parallel Lives Along N’Che Wana,”community icon and Native American Elder, Ed Edmo, and former professor Lani Roberts write about growing up in rural Oregon during the 1950s. Ed is Shoshone Bannock, Nez Perce, Yakama and Siletz and lived at the fishing village at Celilo Falls until its destruction in March 1957. Lani grew up six miles away just outside The Dalles, a descendant of an early settler family. Although they grew up in the same area and are the same age, their lives were lived in parallel fashion because of the differences in their ethnic heritage. During their childhoods, signs in the windows of businesses read, “No dogs or Indians allowed.”

Their juxtaposed stories give a full picture of rural Oregon and the parallel lives they led along the N’CheWana River.

(For Potter fans, it is a Dumbledore wand. While I won‘t be in costume for Halloween, we will have trick or treat candy, so you’re welcome to stop by.) Whenever I see that a visitor notices the wand on my desk, I remark that—while, yes, I’m a big Harry Potter fan—the reason it sits on my work desk is because it reminds me every day what our job is at the Chamber. Our purpose here at the Wilsonville Chamber is to try and wave our “magic wand” every day so that we can help people realize their goals.

oung Danielle suffered with nausea, fever, and exhaustion due to LCH cancer. One thing, though, would always brighten her day: A costume from Chelsea’s Closet. Putting on a pair of wings, a princess dress, or a mermaid costume was some of the best medicine she could receive. “When you’re going through all this, you have no control over anything… so for Danielle to get to be somebody else helped her feel safe and comfortable and calm. Like she can get through it all,” says Shannon Baimbridge, Danielle’s mother.

The unimaginable worry that comes with a child who is seriously ill, spending numerous hours in the hospital, is a reality for many parents. Chelsea’s Closet is not only a bright spot during this stressful time – it is a therapeutic, joyful activity, which helps heal both child and parent during the most difficult times. Watching their bright red mobile costume closet wheel down the hospital hall is energizing for patients, family, and staff alike… knowing that the dreary hospital stay is about to change. Chelsea’s Closet works to transform lives of children and families facing serious illness by including therapeutic dress-up and play with their hospital experience.

The Tigard-based not-for-profit organization offers hospitalized children and their siblings the chance to select a costume and accessories from its mobile costume closet. The program supports treatment and recovery by providing therapeutic play to more than 2,400 seriously ill children annually in local hospitals, serving all 36 counties in Oregon as well as Southwest Washington.

“Because of my daughter’s illness, I know first-hand the horrors of watching a child go through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery only to see it dampen their spirits and change their body,” says Alison Hicks, Chelsea’s Closet Co-Founder and CEO. “Remembering that they are children before they are patients, Chelsea’s Closet empowers them to be anything they want to be transforming them with costumes, play, and imagination into the Superhero or Princess to combat their disease.”

How to Finance Your Small Business’ Future

Identify what your small business is doing right, then capitalize on it.

While some people romanticize about being the self-made entrepreneur, rarely does an individual with nothing but a dream and $5 in the bank bootstrap an idea into a business empire. Remember the old adage “it takes money to make money?” More often, those self-made entrepreneurs need periodic infusions of cash to reach new heights. ”Financing is a bet on future income,” says Mike Michalowicz, business expert and author of the book Profit First. “So if you receive financing, you have to have confidence that you’re going to be able to repay that in the future.”

Whether the goal is growth or survival, there comes a point in nearly every entrepreneur’s life when he or she must consider whether or not to seek outside financing. That’s the point when you’ve figured out that what you’re doing is right, says Michalowicz. When you know what’s working, “that’s when you finance it because now it’s a cash machine.”

Financing Your Small Business’ Future If you do decide that financing is in your future, here are three options for infusing your business with cash.

Apply for a small business bank loan. “I’m a big fan of banks, specifically credit unions,” Michalowicz says. One reason is because they are easily accessible. “You can just walk down the street and there’s a source of money.” However, getting approved may not be so easy, particularly if your business doesn’t have a strong track record or a good credit rating. If your business is considered particularly risky, you may get a loan but with higher interest rates. One way to help alleviate a bank’s concerns is to consider a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan. “If you seek a loan and the banks see you as higher-risk, the SBA will step in and say, ‘we’re going to take on that risk,’” says Michalowicz. That makes it easier for you to get approved.

Reach out to venture capitalists. Another source of funding small business owners may consider is the venture capitalist (VC) or angel investor.

These are typically wealthy individuals who were likely former entrepreneurs themselves. Not only do they invest in businesses, but they often introduce business owners to new connections, which can sometimes be even more valuable than money. The downside is they’re harder to find than banks and they become a partner in your business. “When you get a loan from a bank, the bank isn’t going to come to your next meeting and say, ‘OK, here’s what you should be doing in your business,’” Michalowicz says. “An angel investor absolutely may be doing that.”

Access fast cash via credit cards — but be careful. The funding source that makes Michalowicz the most nervous is credit cards. “The upside is that it’s instant money,” he says. The downside is that you personally guarantee the loan, meaning you’re personally responsible for paying it back.

“Secondly, credit cards typically have extremely high interest rates,” he says, which can ultimately hamstring your business just when you need money the most.

Financing is a gamble on future income, so you need to make sure you’re making good bets. That means investing the time to distinguish between what’s working in your business and what’s not. Michalowicz says, “The time to head to the bank or VC is when you have the confidence that you’ll be able to pay that money back very quickly and make more money, which is the objective.”

TIPS TO CARVE THE PERFECT PUMPKIN

By Courtney Smith elieve it or not, everyone can be an artist when it comes to pumpkin carving, but it is harder than it looks. Theses 11 tips will have your gourds looking and smelling good the entire trick-or-treating season.

4. Scoop out all the pulp (and then some).

1. Start with the right pumpkin.

5. Sketch out your design on paper first.

Choose one that’s fresh, with a sturdy stem, no bruises, and a flat bottom so it won’t roll while you carve.

You can buy a special “claw” for pumpkin gutting, but an ice cream scoop will do just fine.

Thin the inner wall of the “face” area to 1¼-inch thick, so it will be easier to pierce the shell.

2. Cut from the bottom, not the top.

Draw your art to size then tape it to the front of your pumpkin and use a fork or pencil to poke holes along the lines you want to carve.

3. If you do carve from the top, cut out the lid on an angle.

It’s easier to create features when the face is gazing up at you. It is suggested to use a serrated kitchen knife or an X-Acto knife for carving.

Cutting your “lid” from the bottom of the pumpkin helps prevent the sides from caving in later.

This way it won’t drop inside the pumpkin when you replace it, like it would with a straight upand-down cut. A boning knife should work well for this.

6. Try holding the pumpkin in your lap.

7. Start by making simple rough cuts.

If you get the big pieces of pumpkin out of the way first, you can go back and clean up the edges of your design later.

8. Use your scraps creatively.

Make a tongue, pipe, or hair accessories out of a discarded piece of pumpkin shell, for example.

9. Keep your pumpkin fresh.

Spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels a few days later, you can revive it with a facedown soak in cold water for up to eight hours.

10. Create a chimney.

First, leave the lid on for a few minutes while the candle burns. Then make a small hole where the lid has blackened. Or, save yourself the stress and go with battery-operated votive instead.

11. Sprinkle cinnamon inside the lid.

That way, when you light the candle, your jacko’-lantern will smell like a pumpkin pie. Yum.
