Winter Skincare

BEAUTY TIPS

By Beauty Expert Christine Lewy

Why do you need to switch up your skincare routine during winter?

Colder temperatures and less humidity are a concoction for dry skin. Cold weather constricts blood flow to the oil glands, reducing oil production. Add running the household heater and stress from the holidays, and your skin will be begging for help. Each season as the temperatures and weather change, it’s a good idea to reassess your skincare routine and mix it up.

What can you do?

Things to consider changing up during the winter are your cleanser and moisturizer. Go for a richer creamier cleaner that won’t strip your skin, like the Conditioning Milk Cleanser from GloSkinBeauty. When it comes to your moisturizer, choose a more emollient one to repair the damaged skin

barrier and add moisture to your skin. My pick is the Intensive Nourishing Cream from Epionce. Other options would be to add a Hyaluronic Acid serum (Vitamin B) to add hydration under the skin and fight dryness at the source. If this sounds exciting our pick is the Neocutis Hyalis +. Opt-in for masks, such as the Enriched Firming Mask from Epionce, to deeply hydrate and firm. You can even sleep in this transformative mask for better results. Also, make sure to drink enough water and consider adding a humidifier.

What not to do

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you can stop using your SPF. The rays that cause skin aging (UVA rays) penetrate clouds and windows. So make sure to wear at least an SPF 30 even during the winter months. Also, be careful not to use gel cleansers that can remove too much natural oil and add to the dryness.

Taste Of The Town PIZZA SCHMIZZA

“Humbling, accommodating, and a true blessing.” That’s how Claude and Hannah DaCorsi describe the welcome they’ve had since taking ownership of Pizza Schmizza in the Argyle Square Shopping Center. It’s now called Schmizza Pub & Grub, and it’s a place full of fun and laughter. Leading the laughs is Claude himself. “To know me is to laugh,” he says. “I love what I do, and I am right there making the dough, serving the customers. I want people to leave giggling because everyone needs a giggle.” At Schmizza, there is plenty to smile about with a huge variety of pizzas on the menu, from the classic and simple to the gourmet and unexpected. A popular choice is the Genoa, topped with genoa salami, pepperoni, crumbled italian sausage, mushrooms & black olives. If you like your pizza with a pop culture reference, try the Popeye & Olive Oil, which comes with fresh spinach and roma tomatoes on a bed of creamy alfredo sauce with garlic & feta cheese. Or if you want something really different, something unlike any pizza you’ve ever had before, go for the Rustic Pie. With its toppings of baby red potatoes, roma tomatoes, garlic, broccoli & a sprinkle of feta cheese, it’s perhaps the most unusual choice on the menu, and a surprisingly delicious one! 8 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2020

They usually have a selection of 8 house pizzas prepared daily that you can order a slice or two of, but if none of the house pizzas strike your fancy, you can always build your own! The best part, according to Claude, is what he describes as their “breadstick of crust,” filled with melting butter and parmesan. “We make our dough every day,” he says. “It’s about as fresh you can get; it’s key with our pizza. You can taste that freshness.” Pizza reigns supreme at Schmizza, obviously, but if that just isn’t your thing, don’t worry! They also have an awesome selection of sandwiches, salads, and pasta to choose from. The Frickin’ Chicken Pasta is always a great choice, with grilled chicken, oven-roasted broccoli, and penne pasta all mixed with a basil pesto cream sauce. Claude says, “If I could eat the Frickin’ Chicken Pasta every day I would, but that’s too many carbs!” Then there is the Cajunator, which is definitely a good option for the more adventurous eater. It’s grilled chicken or spicy Italian sausage tossed in a spicy Cajun chipotle cream sauce, with penne pasta and parmesan cheese. It’s certainly unusual for a pasta dish, but surprisingly popular. “The regulars come in for it day after day,” says Claude.

They also come for the salad and sandwich specials, like the fanfavorite BLT Avocado salad. Other options you’ll find include a “specialty of the month” pizza, various daily specialties, and the perfect lunchtime meal deal: for only $5 you can grab some pizza and a drink, and be in and out in 5 minutes. Schmizza also offers an impressive assortment of drinks to select from, plus a daily happy hour from 3-5pm. “We have expanded our beers and wines,” Claude says. “We have 22oz. bottles and 16oz. cans of top crafted beer and cider and over 40 choices, plus 6 on draft, and you can take those bottles to go.” “On the go” happens to be just how the DaCorsi’s like it. Every weekend they hold a contest for a neighborhood pizza party in either Wilsonville or Gresham, where they own another Schmizza location. It’s a special serving of 10 pizzas from their customized Schmandemic van, and to enter is very simple: just go to their Facebook page and nominate yourself or a neighbor. That’s just one of the ways they find to give back to the community, and Claude says his wife, Hannah, is really at the heart of that. “She has her finger on what the community wants, and she is so good at getting

involved… without her there is nothing.” During the recent wildfires that ravaged the surrounding area, the store was closed for 4 days so they could help provide food and water to the firefighters and evacuees. Claude and Hannah want everyone to know that they love their community and they are here to help whenever the need arises. This year has been a rough one for local businesses and restaurants, but thankfully for the DaCorsi’s, pizza is a pretty good business to be in right now. With take out and delivery skyrocketing in popularity, it almost seems like the pizza industry may have simply been ahead of the game all these years. Things are going well enough that they even have expansion plans for the Wilsonville location, including adding 14-15 tables to the porch area, so there will always be plenty of room for their loyal Schmizza fans. As a thank-you to the community for all of the support this year, they have a special offer for Wilsonville: from now until Christmas, get 20% off when you purchase a whole pizza. Sounds like a great reason to head on over to Schmizza and get your order in now! Schmizza Pub & Grub is located near Lenza Eye Center in the Argyle Square Shopping Center, at 8695 SW Jack Burns Blvd in Wilsonville. Visit schmizza.com to see the menu or get more information, then place your order online or call them at 503-582-8210.

Dr. April Voves of

Meadows Health and Wellness

A New Approach to Naturopathic Healing Written by Dennis McNabb • Photos by Carly Carpenter

N

aturopathic medicine is a fusion of natural and conventional medical disciplines with a focus on supporting the body’s intrinsic ability to heal itself. We tend to forget this, but the body has an amazing array of systems which, when working properly, function naturally to keep us in balance and in good health. We shouldn’t need to consistently rely on a host of medications.

The problems arise for us living in today’s society, where our bodies are constantly bombarded with pollutants, allergens, and stress that overload those systems and result in imbalances which can cause illness. By discovering where those imbalances lie, considering them within the larger context of our bodies as a whole (holistically), and then treating each of those systems to regain proper function, naturopathic medicine aims to help our bodies heal themselves. Sometimes it takes herbs, nutraceuticals, medication, and/or dietary changes, but in general, Naturopathic Doctors always seek to find the least invasive methods to assist our bodies in doing what they’re designed to do - function in good health. 12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2020

As we are all aware, modern conventional (or “Western”) medicine can do amazing things. With all of the technological and medicinal advancements made in the last two hundred years, there are dozens upon dozens of afflictions that would have proven fatal not so long ago, but are now completely curable. That said, as effective as it is, conventional medicine tends to focus specifically on whatever the singular problematic or offending system is to resolve the patient’s symptoms, rather than utilizing a more holistic approach. That is why Naturopathic Medicine, by symbiotically combining the technological advancements of conventional medicine with more traditional and natural methodologies (which puts each individual system into perspective as a part of the larger whole), provides patients with care that is really the best of both worlds. That is also why Dr. April Voves at Meadows Health and Wellness here in Wilsonville is the doctor you’ve been looking for - the one who could potentially make all the difference for you and your overall health and well-being! Dr. Voves (pronounced Vove-ess, or you can call her Dr. April) does not believe in simply sticking a proverbial “band-aid” over serious health issues. She’s not focused on merely treating your symptoms, but rather on understanding the cause of those symptoms; she’s about getting to the root of the problem and doing whatever she can to help fix it.

“She is transitioning now to a “membership model” where patients sign-up as “members” of Meadows Health and Wellness, which means no insurance hassle.”

As far back as she can remember, Dr. Voves has always had an interest in health and nutrition. After spending time working in conventional medical facilities, she discovered her true passion was in naturopathic medicine, where she could really get to know her patients and make positive, impactful changes in their lives. On average, the typical primary care physician is only able to spend about 7 minutes with each patient. This is not due to any fault of the doctor, but it’s simply the way many systems are structured at this time. However, it’s extremely difficult to accomplish much in 7 minutes, especially in an incredibly complex field like medicine! Dr. Voves works outside of that system, and as a result she is able to spend 60-90 minutes with patients on their first visit and 45-60 minutes on follow-ups. She is a primary care physician with a focus on functional medicine, so she is also able to provide much more thorough and extensive care. Her kind, compassionate manner combined with a sincere drive to help every patient find superlative health and balance makes Dr. Voves the optimal choice for local primary care. In order to serve her patients in the most sensible and efficient way, she has restructured her system of care. She is transitioning now to a direct primary care or “membership model” where patients sign-up as “members” of Meadows Health and Wellness, which means no insurance hassle. Medical insurance inflates your rates on procedures, so this is the best way for her to give the most comprehensive care at the most reasonable price, and since she provides complete price transparency on everything she does prior to treatment, you can make solid, well-informed decisions without getting stuck with a bill you weren’t expecting. For a very reasonable $100 per month membership fee, you get a huge array of inclusive services including unlimited visits! That’s right, no more co-pays every time you need to go in. There are none of the complications or surprises that often come from dealing with insurance companies, and no commitment in terms of membership. That said, because she is willing to spend so much time with each patient, she has limited space for membership, so don’t hesitate! Go to www.meadowshw.com to sign up today, and start getting the best care for you! Meadows Health and Wellness is located at 30250 SW Parkway Ave, Suite 4, in Wilsonville. Please call 971-373-4012 or email hello@meadowshw.com for more information.

Dear Wilsonville Community: As we near the end of this very intense 2020, I wanted to take a minute to thank our Wilsonville community. Everyone has pulled together to try to help ensure the survival of Wilsonville businesses. We’re proud of WACC’s partnership effort with our City Council to create in April the $400,000 COVID-19 emergency fund. It not only provided local area residents with gift cards but also gave direct subsidies to struggling local businesses.

This project is especially great because at the end you’ll have beautiful ornaments to hang on your tree or around the house for years to come!

W H AT YO U ’ L L N E E D : • Wire snowflake forms (these can be purchased online or find a tutorial to make your own) • Assorted beads (make sure the holes are large enough for the wire) • Needle nose pliers • Ribbon for hanging (or an ornament hook)

S T E P S: • Bead one prong of the wire form, leaving about ½ inch at the end. • Use pliers to bend the end of the wire back and close it to make a loop. • Repeat steps 1 & 2 for all of the remaining prongs. • Insert ribbon through one of the end loops and tie the ends together, or simply use an ornament hook. *Instructions from happinessishomemade.net

The group has been rocking and rolling in the Pacific Northwest since the late seventies, but they travel all over performing nationwide, from coast to coast. Jerry Hoffman, one of the 3 original founding members still in the group, is one of the friendliest guys you could ever meet. He also represents the core of what the band and show is all about - fantastic people, who are simply having a blast doing something they all love. Believe it or not, the whole thing actually started out as a gag! Back in ‘78, when Jerry and some friends were working at Washington

Happy Holidays to Wilsonville from TEAM BELTRAN! BELTRAN! By Dennis McNabb

Hopefully you’ve been following along with the Beltrans and our coverage of the real estate market this year, but in case you missed anything, here’s a quick recap. First of all, the Beltrans have been successfully helping their customers buy and sell real estate in the Portland Metropolitan area since 2007, with a strong focus on Wilsonville, where they are based. They have a reputation for making the home buying and selling process as simple and enjoyable as possible. Jaimy, who is ranked in the top 50 of all Portland area real estate agents, is known for always putting his clients first, and this is no overstatement. Jaimy is as sincere as they come. He and the whole Beltran team care deeply about each and every one of their clients and the communities they live in and serve. His wife and business partner, Sherine, is known for her marketing acumen and expertise, which is their key to selling homes faster. She is also as kind and caring a person as you will ever meet, and together they are truly an unstoppable force - a real dynamic duo! They also happen to have an incredibly talented staff of real estate professionals, affectionately known as Team Beltran. These carefully chosen individuals not only share the Beltran’s love of real estate, but are also driven by a strong desire to be of service to their clients, their teammates, and the community at large. Everyone on the team focuses, first and foremost, on building meaningful relationships and providing extraordinary service to each and every client. They aren’t limited by property types, geography, or a transaction mindset. Instead, they concentrate on truly understanding each client’s needs and helping them achieve their real estate goals. In addition to real estate, the Beltrans are extremely passionate about getting directly involved and supporting the local community. Jaimy and Sherine are involved in numerous projects, from volunteering at their church and sponsoring local events, to organizing successful fundraisers and serving on multiple committees and boards. In fact, in 2015 the Beltrans received the Wilsonville Rotary Club’s First Citizen award for their work and dedication in the 30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2020

local community. Additionally, every year (save 2020 due to COVID), they have thrown lavish customer appreciation parties to show their ongoing commitment and gratitude to their clients. Speaking of 2020, it has been an interesting year, to say the least. Circumstances have created very difficult times for many of us, and the Beltran Team is no different. They’ve had to face many unexpected challenges but they’ve done so with patience, intelligence, and grace. They’ve made the necessary and appropriate adjustments to protect themselves, their employees, and their clients, and they’ve forged ahead without major disruption. In fact, they are even now at the top of their game! While COVID has certainly made the real estate process more complicated, Team Beltran has risen to that challenge and they are pleased to say that they and many of their clients are thriving. On average, the real estate market typically sees a major drop in sales during the 4th quarter. Only the most motivated buyers are normally active during this time (over the holidays). This year, however, has proven to be utterly unpredictable in every way, and sales are surprisingly still going strong. In fact, this may end up being their strongest quarter of the year! The suspected reason for this is that the pandemic caused a delay in 2nd quarter sales (which are traditionally the highest) because a lot of businesses were closed down during that time. As a result, sales that would have typically been made earlier in the year, didn’t go through until summer and fall. What’s so exciting though, is that the normal fluctuations which naturally occur (after catching up from the spring lag, the market should see a significant drop) don’t seem to be happening. The market is still red hot, and Jaimy foresees this continuing into the 1st quarter of 2021. For those of you who are “numbers” people, you can look at the Beltran Team with these figures in mind: RMLS (Regional Multiple Listing Service) stats reflect that for most agencies, 4th quarter sales are 83% of 3rd quarter sales. Team Beltran, however, has historically and consistently been able to stay at 100% through the 4th quarter. This year, though, they are actually looking at a 4th quarter that is at 200% sales over their 3rd quarter! And what that means is that if you

were hoping to sell your house this year but thought perhaps you’d waited too long and missed your window of opportunity, that’s not the case at all! The other part of the story is that there is still a huge shortage of new and available housing. Jaimy explains it this way: the market is “balanced” when they have 4-5 months of inventory. That means, if nothing new arrives on the market to sell, they will run out of available inventory in 4-5 months. Right now, the Portland Metropolitan area has a 2 month inventory. That’s close to nothing, and it’s been that way for 4 consecutive months - the longest run they’ve seen since 2013. Translation? It’s a Seller’s Market, so there’s a good chance you can sell your home quickly and for more money.

So what does that mean for the buyers out there? Should you wait and hope things change? Absolutely not! Interest rates are incredibly low (around 3%) and that can make all the difference. You might have to pay a slightly higher list price for your new home, but with interest rates this low you can still ultimately end up paying less overall. So as it turns out, it’s actually a great time to buy, too! It’s of the utmost importance, however, that you find a great Buyer’s Agent, who can help you make the right offer on the right property and get that offer accepted over other offers. It’s an incredibly competitive market, so your agent needs to have a proven record, a proven set of tactics

to win, and you have to be able to trust them. Having an agent that you can be confident in, and knowing that not only are they good at what they do, but that they’re looking out for your best interests, makes all the difference in the world! We are here to let you know that there is no real estate team out there more deserving of your trust than Team Beltran.
