Meet Kayla, one of our wonderful CSM instructors! She began playing violin and viola at the age of eight. She went on to play with the Portland Youth Philharmonic and has performed with several honors orchestras and choirs. She studied at George Fox University with a focus in Music and Psychology and believes that it was her performance opportunities there that opened doors to other aspects of music like songwriting, arranging, recording, and teaching. Since then, she has recorded 3 full-length albums and has toured with her band as well as recording with other up-and-coming Portland acts.

Kayla’s favorite part about teaching is watching each student grow as a musician and as a person. Being able to watch and guide someone through their musical journey is something she considers to be a blessing. Currently, Kayla teaches violin, viola, voice, and piano at Concert School of Music.

Microneedling

If you’re interested in more youthful looking skin, less scarring, and even skin tone then microneedling might be for you.

What is it exactly?

Microneedling is a treatment that produces small micro channels with yep, you guessed it, micro sized needles. Yikes! It’s no cause for concern though, as this is a minimally invasive procedure that causes the skin to heal itself and produce more collagen and elastin. This in turn, creates more youthful looking skin. It’s also a great option to improve skin texture, reduce acne scarring, even out skin tone, reduce pore size, lessen stretch marks, and reduce dark spots. This treatment is usually performed on the face but can be done on other areas of the body.

Some microneedling services may also include a collagen enhancing serum that can boost results.

Beware, this is not an at home treatment, and any device claiming to be safe to be used at home is not a professional microneedling device.

At home microneedling devices have shorter needles and do not penetrate the skin to the depth needed to see the change you’re desiring. Make sure you’re seeing a professional for this treatment too. A microneedling treatment is performed by an advanced esthetician, nurse, or doctor.

How long does it take?

First the practitioner will apply a numbing cream, which ensures a comfortable experience. Usually the full treatment will last about 60 minutes. The time of the service depends on the “extras” that

are added into the treatment such as a firming mask. Depending on the results you’re looking for, you may need up to 4-6 treatments done about a month apart.

What can you expect afterwards?

Expect to have some redness that usually lasts for 24 hours and up to 3 days. Your skin may feel like you’ve gotten a sunburn, and you may experience some light swelling around the affected area. Your body will soon begin to make collagen to fill in and heal the treated area. For best results it’s recommended clients incorporate an effective skin care regimen with anti-aging products.

Treatments like microneedling are only as effective as the great skincare routine that’s performed morning and night. You’ll want to avoid exfoliating treatments like retinols and scrubs for up to a week following this treatment but ask your professional for their recommendation.

How soon do you see results? You may notice an instant smoothing effect, but full results won’t be visible for up to 6 weeks.

Who can receive this treatment?

Most anyone can opt in for this procedure as long as the client doesn’t have active acne or wound healing problems.

How much does it cost?

Depending on where you go and what extras are added into this service, one treatment starts at $200 and can go up from there.

Taste Of The Town OKI SUSHI

B

etter get ready Wilsonville, and start getting those chop-stick fingers back in shape because there is a brand new Kaiten-Sushi style restaurant in town.

Located between Fred Meyer and the Oswego Grill, Oki Sushi & Grill is the newest dining option to come to Wilsonville.

What is Kaiten-Sushi?

Well it translates to “rotating sushi” and in Japan, where it originated, it’s described as a fastfood style of sushi served on conveyor belts that run throughout the restaurant, from which customers can select their choices. If you’ve eaten sushi in or around the Portland Metropolitan area, you’re probably familiar with this type of place. Something a little less common, however, is that in addition to their sushi track they also have the grill mentioned in their name. From the sushi track you can select a wide variety of smaller plates, whereas with the grill you 12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2020

can order a more standard full meal. This means that you have an endless array of delicious Japanese dishes available to choose from!

Owner Michael Jiang was born and raised in Japan, and has lived in the United States for the past 20 years. He learned at an early age that he had a special love for sushi. Various friends of his have owned restaurants, and through those connections he was able to receive the necessary instruction to start his own. In the last five years, he has opened five sushi restaurants around the area, Oki Sushi being the newest.

Each location is slightly different and offers different culinary experiences, but they are all high quality sushi bars.

Having opened recently in the midst of the pandemic, Michael and his team have been working through a few setbacks.

Like most places right now, their dine-in seating availability is limited, and the conveyor track is not operational at the moment. However the kitchen is up and running, ready to fill

lots of take-out orders and they are excited to feed Wilsonville some fantastic Japanese cuisine!

In any sushi restaurant in America, you will generally see roughly five types of sushi. They are “nigiri” (a topping, usually fish served over sushi rice), “sashimi” (fish alone served without rice), “maki” (sushi rice with various other fillings wrapped in seaweed), “uramaki” (rice is on the outside with the seaweed wrapped filling in the middle), and “temaki” (handrolled sushi ingredients in a cone of seaweed). Within each general type of sushi will be many varieties and combinations to try. Also commonly served with your sushi are Wasabi (a spicy “Japanese horseradish” type of paste), pickled ginger, and soy sauce for dipping.

One of their best selling rolls is the Phoenix Roll, which is filled with cream cheese, tempura salmon and avocado, and topped with spicy crab meat, masago (roe), and spicy sauce.

Another popular choice is the Tokyo Roll. It’s filled with raw spicy tuna and avocado, topped with tempura red snapper, spicy mayo, eel sauce and sweet chili sauce. So tasty! (In preparation for writing this article, I was lucky enough to be able to sample a few of their rolls, and they were fantastic! Two thumbs up!)

So what about those who don’t like sushi? Well if you are someone who has previously steered clear of sushi restaurants in general, you might be under the mistaken impression that it’s nothing but raw fish and rice. Of course those options are on the menu, but it’s also so much more than that.

Some of the sushi rolls are made with cooked fish rather than raw, and there are vegetarian options as well. Gyoza, eggrolls, and more appetizers are also available, and the grill serves delicious Teriyaki, Bento, and even vegetable Yakisoba. You can also order combo plates where you can mix and match your protein along with fresh grilled veggies. There really is something here to satisfy almost everyone’s tastes. There’s even plans in the works to add a full bar in the near future!

Even in these early stages (and especially considering the current difficulties facing new businesses), it’s clear that Oki Sushi is a step above standard Kaiten-Sushi restaurants. The decor, with a striking contrast of dark wood and bamboo against a white backdrop, provides an ambience that is sleek and modern while simultaneously comfortable and serene.

Once restrictions are relaxed and Michael and his team are able to bring the restaurant to its full potential (with a working conveyor belt and full capacity seating), this will surely be your favorite new spot for sushi.

Whether you’re a sushi connoisseur or you have never tried it before and are a little curious, you definitely need to give Oki Sushi a try. In-house seating is limited, but you can place an online order for pick up as well. Come on down and give this brand new, locally-owned business a hearty Wilsonville welcome!

DIY TIPS: TIPS: ORGANIC LAWN CARE

H

omeowners spend a lot of time and money in the quest for a beautiful lawn.

While chemical fertilizers and pesticides are often the go-to products, using them too much can be detrimental to your soil and the surrounding environment. A natural, organic approach can yield the same results, along with environmental benefits. While it may take a little more time, organic lawn care lets nature do its thing and helps the grass grow just as green. Here are some helpful hints.

STEP 1: UNDERSTAND YOUR SOIL

Find out what kind of soil you have so you know what you're working with. Pick up a handful and squeeze it. If it crumbles when you open your hand, you have loam soil. If it doesn't crumble, you have clay soil. Sand soil falls apart immediately. Knowing the kind of soil you have helps you figure out how much organic fertilizer and soil amendments you'll need.

Helpful Tip: Do not add animal waste, meats, oils, dairy, diseased plants, weeds or plants treated with pesticides or herbicides to your compost.

Find or purchase earthworms and add them to your compost pile to accelerate decomposition.

STEP 4: WATER CORRECTLY

As a general rule, most lawns require about 1" of water, once a week to penetrate down to the roots. Consistent watering prevents damage to those roots which can actually kill your lawn. At the same time, you don’t want to overwater which can lead to fungus growth.

Helpful Tip: Always water in the morning when the sun is low and the temperature is cooler. This allows for better water intake.

Helpful Tip: Do a pH test. Your soil's acidity plays a big part in it’s health. Grass grows best in soil with neutral pH.

STEP 2: MOW AND MAINTAIN ORGANICALLY

Decrease stress on your grass by letting it grow out during summer months. Try cutting it every two weeks instead of each week, or mow with a higher blade setting. A lawn with taller grass keeps weed growth to a minimum and aids in drought resistance.

Helpful Tip: Choose grass that is native to your region.

STEP 3: FERTILIZE NATURALLY

Use organic, natural fertilizers on your lawn. There are many bagged, commercial varieties or you can create your own with compost. Fertilize your lawn minimally once a year; ideally twice—once in the fall 18 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • AUGUST 2020

HughesWater Gardens A LITTLE POCKET OF EASTERN INFLUENCE IN THE WEST

I

f someone asked you to conjure up the consummate image of peace and tranquility in your mind, what would that look like? For as many people as there are on Earth, there are as many different images. But whether your vision is of a deserted tropical beach, a meadow next to a babbling stream, or a cabin on the shore of a mountain lake, I think we can almost universally agree that there is something special about water. There’s simply something unsurpassable about the calming, mesmerizing, almost magical impact it has on us.

Eamonn Hughes, the owner of Hughes Water Gardens on Stafford Road just north of Wilsonville, understands this better than most and he has dedicated his life to helping others create their own experience of tranquility by channeling the calming effects of water. Originally from Ireland, Eamonn began working summers as a landscaper while studying mathematics and biochemistry at university. As time went on however, he found he had love and a real knack for this working outdoors.

He quickly developed a reputation around Dublin for being one of the best in the business, and when he met Gordon Ledbetter, a gentleman who specialized in water gardens, it proved to be a pivotal moment in Eamonn’s journey. Gordon was equally well-known and respected for his specialized work and when he asked Eamon to work together on a project (specifically, to do the landscaping around one of Gordon’s water gardens) Eamonn discovered his true calling.

Harnessing their keen sense of adventure, Eamonn and his wife, who he met in New York, moved to Oregon in 1987.

What they discovered here was “Ireland with a summer” and they quickly put down roots. Success came after they recognized and capitalized on an opportunity to bring a specially-manufactured rubber liner for ponds (which was already being used widely in Europe) to America. Over the years, others jumped on the bandwagon as well, but to this

day Hughes is still one of the biggest and most well-respected designers and suppliers of water gardens in the country.

With examples of his work showing at Clackamas Town Center, Autzen Stadium and the LanSu Chinese Gardens in Portland, Eamonn has designed some of the most beautiful and recognizable water features in Oregon. EASIEST EVER BLACKBERRY CHIA JAM

August in the Pacific NW means that blackberries are abounding nearly everywhere. What

better way to use up your abundance of local blackberries than making some delicious jam?

There are many ways to do so, but this recipe is the easiest by far. It’s made with just a few clean ingredients, thickened naturally with superfood Chia seeds, and the sweetener can be changed to fit nearly any dietary need, including paleo or keto options. Best of all, it takes only 20 minutes and there’s no canning required!

This jam tastes wonderful on toast or pastries, served with cheese, or as a dessert topping.

(Note: This recipe can be made with almost any berry, although blueberries and strawberries will not break down as easily as blackberries or raspberries, so your jam will turn out a bit chunkier.)

Ingredients: • 1 pound Blackberries, fresh or frozen • 2-3 tablespoons sweetener of choice (monkfruit for keto, pure maple syrup for paleo)

• 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice (optional) • 2-3 tablespoons Chia seeds • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)

Instructions: 1. In a medium-sized pot, bring the blackberries to a low boil, stirring frequently. Reduce heat to low and simmer until the berries soften, about 5 minutes. Lightly mash the berries with a potato masher or fork. Leave some berries in chunks for texture, if you want.

2. Stir in the sweetener, lemon or lime juice (if using), and Chia seeds. Cook the jam on low until it thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Make sure you stir the jam so it doesn’t stick.

3. Remove jam from heat and stir in the vanilla extract (if using). Let jam cool to room temperature.

Pour in a glass jar or air-tight container and store in the refrigerator. This jam will keep in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. It can also be frozen in an air-tight container.

Now is a Great Time for Selling AND Buying Homes!

aimy and Sherine Beltran of Beltran Properties Group (eXp Realty) based in Wilsonville, want to get the message out: the market is HOT right now! With the COVID crisis looming over our collective heads, you might be thinking this is not the right time to take action. However the real estate market is still thriving. It’s natural during a crisis for people to be hesitant about buying or selling a home, but if you’ve had any inclinations (especially about selling) this is actually an ideal time to do it.

There was already a scarcity of homes in the Portland metropolitan area prior to the COVID pandemic. We’ve all heard for years that new construction has not been keeping up with demand. We live in a beautiful region with a lot to offer and as a result, we’ve had a fairly consistent growth rate of around 1.66% since the year 2000. It’s waned slightly in the last few years but we’re still in a very popular area for home buyers.

The effect that the pandemic has had on both sellers (being hesitant to get into the market) and construction (many jobs have been shut down during this time, bringing new construction to a slow crawl) has put an even greater squeeze on availability. To compound that problem, demand has not declined. That means people who are selling their houses are getting considerably more than the asking price. According to Jaimy, some customers recently have been making offers on houses that are as much as twenty thousand dollars over asking price and still not getting them! As a seller, that’s exactly what you want to hear.

The other side of that coin, of course, is that as a buyer you may currently have to put down a slightly higher offer to get the house you want. That’s not ideal, but there is an offset!

Interest rates are currently at an amazingly low 3% depending on your credit score. So even if you have to pay a little more on principle, you’ll be paying less on interest. When interest rates are higher, home buyers can often pay up to 3 times the value of a house once all is said and done.
