Where the star of the bar is the BEER!

I

’m sure many of you are familiar with the popular eighties sitcom Cheers. Everyone loved that show and the idea of a friendly neighborhood watering hole where “everybody knows your name.” The problem is that such places rarely exist in reality. Getting all of those elements right consistently - good atmosphere, good service, good food and drink, and that something extra that keeps people coming back for more - is almost impossible. But fortunately for Wilsonville, the search is over. We’ve got the RAM Restaurant & Brewery.

You must be wondering what’s so special about the RAM. Isn’t it just another sports bar? Isn’t it just a chain restaurant like so many others?

The answer is a resounding “No!” The RAM is so much more than the sum of its parts. Let me tell you why.

First and foremost, The RAM is family-owned. The first one opened in Lakewood, Washington in 1971 and though they’ve branched out from there, the family ownership and the home base of the brand remains the same all these years later.

The location here in Wilsonville is also 30% employee-owned, a very unique thing in this industry and a key factor in making this such a special place. Our location has consistently performed at such a high level over the years that the owners wanted to reward them. They wanted to give back to their hard-working employees and they did so by giving them part ownership.

This means that when you go into the RAM in Wilsonville, the friendly people who greet and serve you there actually have skin in the game. They are invested in their work and take pride in it, and it really shows. From their comfortable atmosphere and superior customer service to their delicious food and fantastic drinks, they are not just another sports bar chain.

Their unique business model is one factor that makes this place a standout, but their amazing food and drink really help put it over the top. Their flagship lineup of beer is a particular point of pride at the RAM. Of course they carry all of the standard varieties of domestic beer you can get anywhere else, but if you’re there you might as well try one of their own house-crafted brews! They’ve been brewing since 1995, and their top notch team of brewers have won over 100 awards and medals for their amazing recipes.

Everything on tap is brewed in-house, from their standard favorites that are available year round, including their original and authentic BigHorn German Hefeweizen, to their seasonal favorites like Cinco Pattas (on tap now!) and IPA for ALS. This last offering is a fantastic beer with a fantastic purpose: $1 from every pint sold goes to ALS research! There are too many options to list here, but suffice it to say that they have something for even the pickiest beer connoisseur. If beer’s

not your thing, choose a cocktail from the full bar. I recommend the Proud Mary, which is a terrific Bloody Mary with additional delicious goodies. FYI: all of their beers and the Proud Mary are served in 18 oz “pints” versus the standard 16 oz. Talk about bang for your buck!

When it comes to food, the RAM is known for their delicious and creatively customized burgers, but they have a widely varied menu with options to please everyone. Start with a tasty appetizer, like the Crispy Calamari or Beer Cheese Fondue with Pretzels. Then choose your main dish from a selection of tacos, fish and chips, hot sandwiches, mac & cheese, salads and more.

For dessert, their Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie or Mile High Mud Pie are great ways to end the feast. They also have daily specials like Allday Happy Hour on Mondays and Burger Day Wednesdays, so check out their online menu to see what today’s special is.

The staff (and owners) at the RAM take the health of their patrons and team very seriously.

Kelly VanMatre, the store leader in Wilsonville, wants everyone to rest assured that they are following all recommended guidelines and precautions (a maximum of 10 people per table, all tables 6 feet apart, masks required, etc.) to keep everyone safe. Their hours are cut back slightly (11:30am-9pm) but they are still open 7 days a week.

They are doing everything in their power to uphold their consistently high standards of quality and service.

LORI GIVENS

of Concert School of Music

A

n unfortunate fact of life is that not many of us work in a field that we enjoy. An even smaller percentage have a career they truly love, and smaller still is the percentage of those who have a burning passion for what they do. You know those people; the ones we all admire and can’t help but envy because their “work” is not work to them. Lori Givens is one of those people. Her passion for music and for sharing her knowledge with students knows no bounds.

It stems all the way back to Lori’s childhood. Most of her family was musical on some level, including her mother, who had played violin for some years. There was a recession and times were tough, so since they couldn’t afford for her to try out different instruments, Lori decided to dust off her mom’s old violin. She took to it fairly quickly (even though it was physically too big for her at the time) and proved to be a serious student.

She begged for private lessons, knowing that it would take special training to achieve the level of mastery she aspired to, but again money was tight. Lori kept playing and learning what she could, and once the economy improved her wish was granted. During her lessons she was given the opportunity to try other instruments and found an immediate connection with the viola, saying that she “loved the chocolatey-warm sound of it!”

Lori joined the Portland Youth Philharmonic, which just happened to be (and still is) one of the earliest and greatest youth orchestras in the country. Lori credits her experience with PYP for many of the skills she gained as a musician there. It was also pivotal in her acceptance to the Indiana 14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • SEPTEMBER 2020

University School of Music on a full scholarship - one of the best music and business schools in the country.

After graduating and spending some years playing professionally with orchestras throughout the country, Lori decided to merge her passion for music with her entrepreneurial spirit, and at the age of only 26 she purchased a small teaching studio called Music Man in Wilsonville.

In the years since, Lori and her husband Nathan (also an accomplished musician), have transformed the humble school for private lessons into the multi-faceted entity it is today. Now it is called Concert School of Music and they employ more than 10 instructors who teach 15 instruments, as well as offering group classes, camps, and even a rock band program! They’ve also gone to the next level by adding a shop for violins and other string instruments, and have turned the studio into a “musical campus” of sorts.

It is Lori and Nathan’s passion for music and their equally great love of teaching that truly sets them apart. Offering the best instruction at the most reasonable prices (and even some free virtual classes) the Givens family considers it their mission in life to help us all connect and communicate through music. HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH Sept. 15 - Oct. 15 Hispanic Heritage Month always starts on Sept. 15, an historically significant day marking the independence day of five Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua.

The designated period is also a nod to those from Mexico and Chile, which celebrate their independence on Sept. 16 and Sept. 18, respectively.

attress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. I have to admit that before speaking to Sean Hathaway, President and Owner of Mattress World Northwest, I was ignorant of the nuances distinguishing one mattress retailer from another. I assumed that there must be only so many brands and so many varieties to chose from.

One buying experience would be the same as the next, right?

Wrong. In fact, I could not have been more wrong.

There’s almost never a time when you will walk into one of their stores that they’re not promoting some sort of fund-raising event, whether it’s for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, Susan G. Komen, Special Olympics Oregon, the Senior Citizens Council of Clackamas County or any of the local schools.

APPLE-PEAR PUFF PANCAKE Total Time: 30 min. Makes: 6 Servings

Ingredients: • 3 tablespoons butter • 4 large eggs • 1 cup 2% milk • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1 tablespoon sugar • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg TOPPING: • 3 tablespoons butter • 3 medium apples, sliced • 3 medium pears, sliced • 3 tablespoons sugar • Maple syrup, optional

1. Preheat oven to 425°. Place butter in a 10-in. oven-proof skillet; heat in oven until butter is melted, 2-3 minutes. Tilt pan to coat evenly with butter.

2. Place eggs, milk, flour, sugar and nutmeg in a blender; cover and process until smooth. Pour into hot skillet. Bake until puffed and browned. 17-20 minutes.

3. Meanwhile, for topping, heat butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add apples, pears and sugar; cook until fruit is tender, stirring occasionally, 12-15 minutes.

4. Remove pancake from oven; fill with fruit mixture and serve immediately. If desired, serve with syrup.

L’Attrait Salon:

Where You Are Always Beautiful

T

here’s a wonderful little story behind Wilsonville’s own premier hair salon, but first let’s answer the two questions you’re probably dying to ask: 1. phonetically, it’s pronounced LaTray (the “t” on the end is silent) and 2. it means “attraction.” Trust me, you’ll want to tell your friends about this place (if you haven’t already) and now you can do so without sounding like a tacky tourist on their first trip to Paris.

Anyway, back to the story. Andrea used to be a cook. She went to culinary school, and even owned her own catering business. Her expertise was in cutting vegetables, not hair. However, like so many of us, she felt unfulfilled by her previous profession; she was looking for something more. And because she is a savvy business woman, a woman of action, it didn’t take her long to realize where and how she could make a difference and find her true calling.

A year and a half later she graduated beauty school and began her new journey. She had a 5 year plan with the

end goal of opening her own salon, but her new path had a rocky start.

The first salon she worked in did not have an atmosphere conducive to the kind of service she wanted to provide.

Discouraged, she went online to search for a new job and discovered that L’Attrait salon had posted an opening not 5 minutes before.

It was fate! Andrea took the position and has been very happily working there ever since. She loves the atmosphere, the stylists, and especially the attitude towards their clientele.

What about her 5 year plan? Well, here’s where things get really crazy.

Last August, Andrea and her husband were having a discussion and he off-handedly recommended that she ask the owners if L’Attrait might be up for sale. It wasn’t at the time, but only 3 days later they changed their mind, and almost exactly 1 year ago the salon became hers. One might say that it was meant to be!

Today, Andrea couldn’t be happier. She has redecorated to give the salon her own flavor, but they still offer the same high quality services as before and the same group of highly-trained stylists has been there for years. Their goal is not to make people beautiful, but to show them that they already are.

“Facial” is a broad term used to describe a treatment performed on the face. A Licensed Esthetician or Advanced Esthetician usually provides facial treatments.

Not all facials are the same, nor are the estheticians who perform them.
