Corned Beef and Cabbage

C

elebrate St. Patrick’s Day with this Slow Cooker Corned Beef and Cabbage. Juicy meat, tons of flavor, incredibly delicious.

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

• 1 medium yellow onion, cut into large wedges • 3 large carrots, cut into thirds • 2 stalks celery, cut into thirds • 1/2 lb. baby potatoes, halved • 1 corned beef brisket (2-3 lbs) • Kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 1 packet pickling spice • 3 sprigs thyme • 2 bay leaves • 1/2 green cabbage, cut into large wedges

1. Add onion, carrots, celery and potatoes to bowl of your crock pot. Place corned beef on top and season generously with salt, pepper, and pickling spices. Scatter thyme and bay leaves over meat and fill slow cooker bowl with water until it is almost completely covering the meat.

2. Cook on high for 4 to 41/2 hours, until meat is tender. Add cabbage to crock pot and cook on high for 45 minutes to 1 hour more, until cabbage is tender and cooked through. Remove meat and vegetables from slow cooker, slice and serve.

In addition to the delicious pastries from the Bakery, they also have warm and cold treats and savory food, including breakfast sandwiches. Their bagels are rolled out by hand and baked fresh every day, and they offer many flavors including cheddar and jalapeno, Asiago, and everything seasoned. Their top-selling food item is a bagel sandwich made with locallysourced bacon, egg and cheese on your choice of bagel.

As the name would suggest, Corner Coffee Shoppe serves a full Espresso menu and specialty drinks. They take pride in featuring local ingredients in nearly all of their products, including the coffee which is locally roasted at Longbottom Coffee in Hillsboro. They make unique drinks you won’t find at any generic coffee house, like the local favorite Oregon Marionberry White Chocolate Mocha. The jams and jellies are made in the store with local seasonal fruits from Salem and different Farmers Markets.

Bringing a bit of sunshine to our dreary Oregon winter, the seasonal treat that Corner Coffee is featuring currently is a delectable Meyer Lemon Tart. They also regularly carry muffins and coffee cake made from scratch, and are known for their variety of gluten free options as well, including red velvet brownies, muffins, cupcakes, cookies, and coming soon they will have gluten free sourdough bread.

WOODBURN ART CENTER & THE GLATT HOUSE

J

ust South of Wilsonville is an amazing place where creativity is expressed and art is created. The Woodburn Art Center has been serving the community in the arts and art education since 1966 when ten visionary local artists founded the Woodburn Art League and began meeting in one another’s homes to paint. Now, they have expanded into a non-profit organization housed in a beautiful space, run by a very dedicated group of volunteers and supported by an active membership of over 80 artists, crafts people and patrons in Woodburn and the surrounding community.

The Woodburn Art Center’s purpose is to promote, stimulate, develop and extend public art appreciation and the individual development of members and the community at large in the various art forms through teaching, training and instruction in the fine arts.

Ray Glatt donated his century old farm house to the Woodburn Art League in 1976 in memory of his late wife, Elizabeth and her passion for the arts. The house has been known as the Glatt House Gallery and home to the art league ever since. The league changed its name to the Woodburn Art Center and became a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization in 1972. With a growing membership, traditions begun by the earliest members such as attracting high quality artists to the center to offer classes, selling supplies, creating a lending library and holding frequent art shows still continue today.

In 1998 the vision to expand the Glatt House became a reality when the Sindberg Studio addition was completed. It provides open studio space for artists and a spacious classroom for the numerous art classes sponsored by the WAC for children and adults in the community. The Glatt House Gallery is now a professional fine arts gallery where each month a different themed art display designed to educate and inspire features the works of one or more artists.

The Woodburn Art Center and Glatt House Gallery is a landmark and true gem for our community to be proud of. Volunteers and members through the years who love the arts have preserved it for today and the current members are committed to maintaining and preserving the house for the appreciation and development of fine arts in Woodburn and the surrounding communities for the future.

The History of St. Patrick’s Day

elieve it or not, Saint Patrick’s Day traditions didn’t always include Guinness beer and wearing green. The celebration of Saint Patrick’s Day actually started with the death of Saint Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, and much later the holiday evolved into a celebration of Irish culture, with parades, special foods, music, dancing, drinking and a whole lot of green.

Saint Patrick, who lived during the fifth century, is the patron saint and national apostle of Ireland. Born in Roman-ruled Britain, he was kidnapped and brought to Ireland as a slave at the age of 16. He later escaped, but returned to Ireland and was credited with bringing Christianity to the people there. In the centuries following Saint Patrick’s death (believed to have been on March 17, 461), the mythology surrounding his life became ever more ingrained in the Irish culture. One legend is that he drove all the snakes of Ireland to their destruction in the sea. Another is that he often explained the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit) using the three leaves of a native Irish clover, the shamrock. This led to a tradition of Irishmen wearing shamrocks in their lapels on Saint Patrick’s Day. In Ireland the holiday was commonly celebrated with religious services and feasts, but it was transformed into a mostly secular day of revelry by emigrants to the United States.

Irish patriotism among American immigrants flourished, prompting the rise of so-called “Irish Aid” societies like the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and the Hibernian Society. Each group would hold annual parades featuring bagpipes and drums. In 1848, several of the New York Irish Aid societies decided to unite their parades to form one 14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • MARCH 2020

official New York City Saint Patrick’s Day Parade. Today that parade is the world’s oldest civilian parade and the largest in the United States, with over 150,000 participants. Each year nearly 3 million people gather along the 1.5-mile parade route to watch the procession, which takes more than five hours. Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia and Savannah also celebrate the day with parades involving between 10,000 and 20,000 participants each.

When the Great Potato Famine hit Ireland in 1845, close to 1 million poor and uneducated Irish Catholics began pouring into America to escape starvation. Despised for their alien religious beliefs and unfamiliar accents by the American Protestant majority, many immigrants faced discrimination and difficulty finding work. When Irish-Americans took to the streets on St. Patrick’s Day to celebrate their heritage, newspapers often portrayed them in cartoons as drunk, violent monkeys.

The American Irish soon began to realize, however, that their large and growing numbers endowed them with a political power that had yet to be exploited. They started to organize and their voting block, known as the “green machine,” became an important swing vote for political hopefuls. Suddenly, annual Saint Patrick’s Day parades became a show of strength for Irish Americans, as well as a must-attend event for a slew of political candidates.

In 1948, President Harry S. Truman attended New York City’s Saint Patrick’s Day parade, a proud moment for the many Irish Americans whose ancestors had to fight stereotypes and racial prejudice to find acceptance in the New World.

Waxing 101

Maybe you’re a seasoned waxer or never done it before in your life. In this article, I’ll give you an overview of what waxing is and why you might love adding it to your routine.

Waxing is the removal of the hair from the base of the root. This is different than shaving. When you shave, you’re slicing the hair off at the base of the skin but still leaving half of the hair hidden beneath the skin which can lead to bumps, itchiness,and ingrown hairs. Waxing can be done on any part of the body, and it can completely transform your look and attitude. Take eyebrow waxing for example. Getting your brows properly shaped by a professional can lift and open your eyes and properly frame your face. Talk about an instant face lift!

Have you not tried waxing before because you’ve heard it will make your hair grow back thicker and darker? This is completely false. When you remove the hair from the base at its root, it comes back feeling finer compared to shaving because the new hair is naturally tapered at the top vs being bluntly cut off from shaving.

Another perk of waxing that debunks this myth over time waxing will reduce the number of hairs that will grow back. Hair growing back darker? Nope that won’t happen either. Only hormones and internal triggers can cause change to the natural color of your hair.

How often should you get waxed? It depends on the area. Brow waxing is about every 3-6 weeks and body waxing is about 4-6 weeks depending on how fast your hair growth cycle is. But imagine silky smooth skin for up to a month! Will you have to keep waxing

once you start? Nope, if you stop waxing your hair will go right back to what it was before you started waxing.

What’s used to remove the hair?

Not all waxing products used for hair removal are created equal. Some can be quite dangerous when not used correctly and can lead to irritated skin. There are honey waxes, sugar waxes, hard and soft waxes, and many more. At my spa Divine Complexions, I’ve chosen to use NuFree which is a product made out of soybeans. It only adheres to the hairs and not to the skin like some waxes, making it a more gentle experience. It’s also one of the only waxing products on the market that is antimicrobial, which for you means a safer service.

Technique is important, and can make just as big of a difference in your experience as the products they use.

Choose a licensed and trained professional called an Esthetician who specializes in this type of service. It’s a great idea to look online and read reviews or ask a friend for a referral. bella Italian Kitchen was established in 2007 with the idea to bring authentic Italian cuisine with a warm and inviting atmosphere to the city of Wilsonville.

Over the years they have been able to be a part of many special occasions in the local community, from wedding rehearsals and major holidays, to community outreach and service. Abella Italian Kitchen is now under new ownership and they are very excited to

be elevating their cuisine and service to new heights.

Chef Tull’s passion for cooking started with working alongside his mother in the kitchen. She taught him the fundamentals of cooking and how to truly put love into each one of the dishes. In time he was cooking with her side by side for all major holidays and nightly for their family. When he was 15, he got a job as a dish washer in his first kitchen, Rimrock Café. As soon as the opportunity presented itself, he began making soups, salads and specials

for the kitchen there. Immediately he knew he was hooked; from the moment he finished creating his first soup he knew what he wanted to do with his life.

Chef Tull dedicated himself to arriving early and staying late, putting himself through the school of hard knocks. As he moved through the country, gathering new inspiration from the 30 restaurants he was so blessed work in, nothing stopped this determined young chef from cultivating his passion. In Las Vegas, Pendleton, Portland and Bend, each kitchen he stepped foot into shaped the journey he was on to becoming a top-tier chef.

Chef Tull became classically trained in French cuisine and to this day still loves how it influenced his palate, but he has always had a passion for Italian cooking and is thrilled to now be able to explore that passion to its fullest.

“It’s a 7 day a week job, yet it is incredibly rewarding to be able to have my hand in every piece of the restaurant” said Chef Tull. Dedicating his life to achieve this goal only pushed him

to the customers. Supporting local businesses is a top priority and without this focus, Abella would just be like any other generic Italian restaurant, instead of the first-class, local gem of an establishment that it is.

Abella Italian Kitchen has cultivated a warm, inviting and beautiful atmosphere, where all are welcome.

REAL ID – What Does it Mean and…

ill you be flying anywhere within the United States after October 1, 2020? If YES, you will need a REAL ID before you can travel.

According to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), beginning October 1, 2020, every air traveler, 18 years of age and older, will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, state-issued enhanced driver’s license, or another acceptable form of ID (i.e. US passport, Global entry card, Military ID)** to fly within the United States. Oregon will be one of the last states in the country to begin offering Real ID compliant driver’s licenses or identification cards – starting July 6th, 2020, through the DMV. This is just three months before TSA will no longer accept the current version of Oregon’s driver’s license for domestic flights.

So if you have domestic air travel plans after October 1, 2020 and don’t like the idea of fighting the crowds at the DMV to pay for a new license that you may not actually need to replace yet, your best alternative may be a US Passport. If you already have one, check the expiration date and renew it now if it expires anytime in the next year.

If you don’t have a passport, get one! Having a passport book or a passport card can save you the time and hassle of getting a new REAL ID driver’s license in time for your domestic travel plans. An added benefit of a new passport? If you are planning an international dream vacation, you are one step closer and it is valid for 10 years! The passport

How To Be Authentic Irish on St. Patrick's Day ...

On St. Patrick’s Day March 17th, anyone can be honorary Irish for the day.

As a “real Irishman” (O’Malley) the rest of the year, I think it’s great to see everyone getting into the spirit and wearing green. It’s terrific to see folks visiting our local Wilsonville restaurants and pubs to celebrate (responsibly, please).

But for all my Irish-for-a-Day friends who want to try to be authentic Irish (even if only for a day) you need to know that Shamrocks are not the same as 4-leaf clovers! St. Patrick is often depicted holding a 3-leaf clover. A 3-leaf clover is painted on the tail of every Aer Lingus airplane.

The Shamrock is the symbol of Ireland so if you want to dress up accurately you want to make sure that you’re wearing a 3-leaf clover. (i.e. not a 4-leaf clover) So what is a 4-leaf clover? It is a very rare 3-leaf clover. The odds of finding a 4-leaf clover are 1 in 10,000. Therefore, in Irish legend and history it is finding a 4-leaf clover that is lucky.

On January 29th Mercedes-Benz of Wilsonville payed host to the 1st Annual Pre-SuperBowl Party with the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce. A football throw contest, resulting in a “non-official prediction”, awesome food by Boston’s Pub & Grill and Izumi Japanese Steakhouse, and nearly 100 of our closest friends! Looking forward to year 2!!

SPRINGRIDGE AT CHARBONNEAU MORNING SPARK February has definitely found its way into our hearts! Our first Morning Spark was on February 5th. SpringRidge at Charbonneau did a fantastic job of hosting our Chamber Members. Residents of the SpringRidge community, joined us and talked about their own experiences in the retirement facility.

Some of the food we enjoyed, was handmade by the onsite chef, and was quite a treat! After the program, members were able to participate in a tour of the facilities.

NICHOLS FAMILY AGENCY / ALLSTATE MORNING SPARK

On February 19th we enjoyed some pretty amazing company at the Nichols Family Agency/Allstate for our Morning Spark. Over 40 people were on hand, meeting and greeting, drinking coffee and hoping their name was drawn for one of many incredible prizes. As with most of our events, laughter was definitely on the agenda!

I

t all started out with siding and windows, decks and fences, additions, kitchen remodels, hardwood floors... the list went on and on. Owner Justin and his team of home improvement experts kept having people ask them about patio coverings so finally they added that to the list of services they provide. It eventually transformed the business until creating beautiful and functional patio covers became their sole focus.

One theme that dominated the conversation was the desire for a cover that kept rain out but still let light in so the house wasn’t so dark in our cloudy climate. In the summer people wanted the heat blocked from the hot sun but still wanted light in the house. Years of building with thin plastics and researching different components was very disappointing. Finally they found a commercial greenhouse product that has been used for over 70 years in large commercial applications; Acrylate Acrylic double pane panels are almost indestructible and come in a variety of options.

Starting out with the idea 25 years ago, they initially sold only one frame color – white with bronze and white Acrylic roof panels. The frame came with standard 3” aluminum posts and few options other than that. As they gained experience and clientele, they were able to include custom frame colors by finding fiberglass columns that added an amazing dramatic effect and great detail.

As the business evolved Justin decided that it was time for a change from general home improvement and dropped all the

other services to focus 100% on being specialists in patio cover and glassed-in room construction. As time went on they came up with a fun logo that represented the feel of the company’s new focus: Patio Cover People.

They learned over the years that Patio Cover People have more fun and the customers all tell the staff that’s true. One thing that still amazes the staff at Patio Cover People is that after all of these years it is still shocking when a project is finished and they see how much sunlight a patio cover brings to people’s lives, both literally and metaphorically, by allowing them greater use of their outdoor living space and protection from the elements without sacrificing our precious daylight.

Oregon’s mild climate keeps the staff of Patio Cover People busy all year long with little break. Currently, Patio Cover People has 6 people on their team including the owner, Justin. Their areas of operation include the Portland/Vancouver Metro Area, all the way to Salem and even out to the Coast when they get requests.
