ver put foundation on and it just doesn’t look quite right? Feeling like your complexion looks dry and dull? Dermaplaning is a spa service that is quick, painless, and effective, and it just might be your solution.
What is dermaplaning?
It’s an exfoliation service that removes the top dead skin cells layer from your face, which allows the beautiful glowing skin underneath BEFORE to radiate through. It also removes all the hair and peach fuzz from your face. It’s a win-win, and your smooth and radiant skin will instantly perk up your complexion.
What are the benefits of dermaplaning?
Getting photos taken soon? Removing the peach fuzz from your face will make you and your makeup artist so happy! A smooth, hair-free face allows foundation to lay better and will give your face a smoother sharper look in photos.
Another perk of getting this service (because it is an exfoliation treatment) is that it will help your skincare products work better because they do not have to penetrate through that top dead skin cell layer. But remember, you need to make sure to wear sunscreen, as always, following this treatment.
How often should I get this service?
If you like your dermaplaning results, you’ll probably plan on getting this service once a month, or before a special occasion. Remember, professional dermaplaning is different from an at-home device or razor. You will not get the same results.
True or False?
Removing the hair from your face with dermaplaning will possibly make it grow back AFTER more or thicker or darker? False! Dermaplaning alone is not capable of altering hair growth, thickness, or color so dermaplane away!
Pro Tip:
Dermaplaning can be paired with so many other services to give you even better results! Some typical combinations include: Dermaplaning + HydraFacial, Dermaplaning Facial, or Dermaplaning + Eyebrow Wax + Eye Contour Treatment. As always if you have questions or concerns email me at info@DivineComplexions.com.

ocoa Bombs, Cheesecake Cups, and chocolatecovered treats, oh my! Had Dorothy and her ragtag bunch encountered these “threats” in the forest (instead of lions, tigers, and bears), they may never have searched for a way home! We are all suckers for those decadent, delicious, artisan treats, and there is no one who does it better than PNW Treats in Wilsonville. Owners, Bobbie and Brad Court, just opened the doors to their new retail storefront on October 15th, 2021. We’ve all heard how COVID-19 has shut so many places down but in this case, it acted as the mother of invention. Brad has always had a penchant for experimenting with new, fun, and creative desserts while Bobbie has a talent for baking. In 2020, the two started selling Cocoa Bombs via their social media platform and soon they could hardly keep up with the demand. From there, they expanded organically, testing new treats while simultaneously branching out to Saturday Market and local Farmers Markets. It was during that time that they honed their craft and discovered what their biggest sellers were. In July of this year, they introduced Cheesecake Cups to their menu, and that’s when things really took off. By using only the finest ingredients (including Ghirardelli and Guittard Chocolates), and constantly providing a huge variety of unique and delicious flavor combinations, Bobbie and Brad have created a true dessert-lover’s sanctuary. With display cases full of home-made goodies including cannoli, baked goods, and beautifully-decorated, seasonally-inspired artisan chocolates, there is something here for everyone!

CANBY’S BRICKS & MINIFIGS
In The Brick Of It By Tyler Francke, Active Media Contributing Writer • Photos by Andrew Sambuceto
here’s a soundtrack to Bricks & Minifigs, the popular LEGO resale store on Highway 99E in Canby, and it’s not from The LEGO Movie 2. True, that movie plays in the background at the store more often than not. But the real ambiance comes from the sound of LEGO enthusiasts — the young and the young at heart alike — digging through the store’s sprawling bulk tables in search of that perfect piece. It’s a sound which owner David Thornton never tires of. “I love that sound, I really do,” David says. “That, to me, is just the sound of LEGO.” The pickers who ply these fertile hunting grounds are as varied as the pieces found therein. Some are kids looking for replacement pieces or letting their imaginations run wild. Others come with detailed build lists and are searching for all the pieces they need like a scavenger hunt. Others are what David calls “master builders.” To them, the bulk tables represent an infinite canvas upon which
12 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2021
they can — and do — construct anything their minds can envision. David has long worked in customer service, but even he can’t believe he gets to spend his days helping people find, build and play with something that is one of his biggest passions. “LEGO is just the greatest product in the world,” David says. “It’s beyond a toy. It’s an art medium; it can teach kids science and technology. And that’s what’s really fulfilling
Bricks & Minifigs leans hard into its reputation as the place for all things LEGO — offering new and used kits (as well as a chance for customers to buy, sell and trade), as well as accessories and merchandise. The store offers many products and pieces that are no longer in production, and custom items you can’t find anywhere else.
about what we do here: We help people capture that magic.” When David first learned about Bricks & Minifigs 10 years ago, he was skeptical that a store could survive - let alone thrive - on a single product. But when he franchised the Canby location 4 years ago, he bought a thriving business that has continued to grow thanks to the support of the community and the unique, ever-changing nature of LEGO and how it appeals to a wide variety of builders.
“We try to have an all-encompassing LEGO experience when you come to the shop,” David says. “The sights, the sounds. I love it when you see someone coming in for the first time because they’re almost on tiptoes — like they can’t believe what they’re seeing. And our regulars love coming here because they know we can help them find exactly what they need.” That experience includes its famous train set, a sprawling custom world comprised of and inspired by numerous stories including Lord of the Rings and Disney fairy tales. A simple on-off switch gives even the smallest of patrons the chance to interact with LEGO products.
The store’s newest display, a vertical, multi-layered tableau inspired by Minecraft, stands nearly six feet tall and has also proven very popular with customers. Bricks & Minifigs offers sales, stocking stuffers and other activities during the holidays such
as scavenger hunts, and its newly reopened party room is the perfect birthday setting for the LEGO lover in your life.
Bricks & Minifigs is located at 250 SW 1st Ave. in Canby. For more information, visit bricksandminifigs.com/canby-or, call 503-263-3337, or check them out on Facebook at facebook. com/bricksandminifigures and Instagram at instagram.com/ bricksandminifigs

Canby’s Own Rhinestone Cowgirl Olivia Harms
By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer • Photos by Natalie McFarland of McFarland Productions
W
hile our levels of passion regarding the subject may vary, music holds a very special place in all of our hearts. It’s in our blood. It transports us. It moves us on a primal level, in ways we can’t always articulate, and it uniquely connects us. Who hasn’t walked down the street and felt an instant camaraderie with a complete stranger wearing the t-shirt of one of our favorite bands? Well I’m happy to announce that next time that happens, you’ll be bonding over a local artist, and she hails from right here in Canby. She’s causing quite a stir in the country music scene, and her name is Olivia Harms, also known as the Rhinestone Cowgirl!
Her mom was the perfect mentor; always there, always supportive, but never pushy, and she helped Olivia assemble a team and cut her first album when she was only 16! She was highly influenced by the popcountry music that was popular in 2011 and listed Shania Twain and Taylor Swift as her main influences. Olivia went to school for a Bachelors’ degree in agriculture. Having grown up in Canby on a 150 year-old family farm, which is as much a part of who she is as her music, she promised her mom she would secure an alternative future before chasing “the dream.” Now with her degree in her back pocket, she’s ready to take on the music world.

HISTORY
Early Entrepreneurs On The Willamette The History of Boones Ferry By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer
H
ave you ever driven on Boones Ferry Road and wondered how this major byway winding from west Portland to south of Woodburn derived its name? You may possibly have heard rumors of this well-traveled road being associated with the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, but dismissed it as hearsay or the product of a fanciful imagination. If that’s the case, you may be surprised to learn that these rumors are not as far-fetched as they might seem. Boones Ferry Road received its name from Boones Ferry, a ferry which plied the Willamette River from 18471954 in the vicinity of modern Wilsonville. Although Daniel Boone himself was not directly responsible for the construction of Boones Ferry, his great-grandson, Jesse, and his family, established the ferry shortly after arriving in the area in the mid-19th century. Born in Kentucky on November 7, 1796, Boone’s grandson, Alphonso Boone Sr. moved to Jefferson City, Missouri where he worked a trading post that supplied travelers migrating west across the Great Plains. Following the premature death of his wife, Nancy, Alphonso and his children joined a wagon train bound for the Oregon Country. In Kansas their group banded together with the Donner Party, who were also heading west. However, unlike the Boone party which took the Applegate trail for the Northwest, the Donner Party split off towards Wyoming, where they met their infamous snowbound doom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range. 24 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2021
By Christmas of 1846, Alphonso and his family had reached Oregon and staked a land claim along the south bank of the Willamette River, between Oregon City and the pre-territorial settlement of Champoeg. In 1848, after approximately a year in Oregon, Alphonso and his two sons, Alphonso Jr. and Jesse, journeyed south to partake in the California gold rush, news of which had swept the nation by storm. While in California, Alphonso Sr. unfortunately succumbed to miner’s disease – a respiratory disorder that damages the lungs – and was buried along the Feather River in Butte County, CA. Until recently, it was believed that both of Alphonso’s sons returned to Oregon. However, local historians have determined that only Jesse made the trip back home. The fate of Alphonso Jr. is uncertain, but it appears he remained in California. In light of this discovery, historians agree that Jesse, upon returning from California, and with the help of his family, undertook construction of both the ferry system and the split-log road connecting Portland and Salem. This road came to be known as Boones Ferry Road, with a route that would eventually span Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties. Judging by this highway’s meandering nature, it is believed that Jesse followed routes established by indigenous tribes who had been traversing the region for centuries.
ownership of a herd of sheep. Following Jesse’s death, ownership of Boones Ferry passed through many hands, but eventually came to rest with Clackamas County. As the years passed, a community developed along the river’s north bank near the ferry terminal, which came to be known as Boones Landing. In 1880, Boones Landing was renamed Wilsonville in honor of the town’s first postmaster, Charles Wilson. During the 1900s, the ownership of Boones Ferry transferred from Clackamas County to the State of Oregon, which operated the ferry until it was decommissioned in 1954 due to the construction of the Baldock Freeway Bridge and the I-5 freeway. In honor of the now defunct ferry, the bridge was renamed Boone Bridge.

The earliest version of the Boones Ferry consisted of a pair of canoes joined together by a platform, which was powered by oarsmen from the Tualatin Tribe— members of the larger Kalapuya Nation, whose ancestral lands ranged throughout the Willamette Valley. The ferry navigated the Newport Pool stretch of the Willamette River. By the twentieth century, the old canoe-platform ferry had evolved into a cable barge which made up to 300 trips daily. This newer iteration was powered by an onboard motor that propelled it back and forth across the river along steel cables anchored to each shore. This modernized version was capable of transporting up to twelve vehicles at a time. Interestingly, old-timers who lived while the ferry still operated recall that it received a boost in revenue from bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across the river during Oregon’s early years—particularly the Prohibition era. The fact that the ferry operated twenty-four hours a day created the ideal situation for transporting illegal booze under cover of darkness. The Boone family’s operation on the Willamette was indeed a profitable venture. Prior to the advent of automobiles, when transportation through the Willamette Valley was either by foot, horseback, or horse-drawn carts, savvy

owners of river-front property recognized the demand for reliable passage across the region’s numerous waterways. Not surprisingly, the Boones weren’t the only enterprising individuals keen to capitalize on this business opportunity. John Taylor established Taylors Ferry on his property along the Tualatin River—hence, the subsequent construction of Taylors Ferry Road. Meanwhile, another pioneer from Daniel Boone’s Kentucky bloodline, Peter Scholl, also launched a ferry service on the Tualatin, access to which would lead to the development of today’s well-traveled Scholls Ferry Road. Boones Ferry was owned and operated by Jesse until 1872, when he was murdered by a neighbor over a dispute concerning
If you’re wondering what remains today of the old Boones Ferry, Wilsonville’s Boones Ferry Park now resides on the north shore of the Willamette River where the north terminal stood. The Tauchman House, located on the park grounds, was originally home to one of the ferry’s early operators, Emil Tauchman. Across the water on the opposite shore, a marina and boat ramp provide recreational access to the river at the location of the old south terminal. From the southbound lanes of I-5, should you gaze west while crossing the Boone Bridge, the location of the ferry lies approximately 660 yards up river. So the next time you’re stuck in traffic on Boones Ferry Road, take a moment to remember these intrepid pioneers whose names commemorate our region’s storied past. The ferries they established proved instrumental to the economic development of Portland and the Willamette Valley. Indeed, they played a critical role in shaping the layout of the very landscape we live in today.

BELTRAN PROPERTIES GROUP
OPTIMISTIC & ENTHUSIASTIC By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer
W
e’re back with our monthly real estate update from our friends, Jaimy and Sherine Beltran, with Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty. We want to let everyone know, heading into the holidays, it’s still an incredible time to sell! We are living in unprecedented times, with the last 12 consecutive months sitting at less than 2 months of inventory. That’s unheard of! And if you have any inclination to put your house on the market, now is the time to do it! Houses are still selling very quickly and for top dollar! In speaking with Jaimy, even with all of his years in the industry, he’s never seen anything quite like this. It’s such an exciting
time, and it seems as though this trend will continue into 2022. Appreciation (of value) year over year between 2020 and 2021 is at 19%, and higher than we’ve seen in almost 20 years! And that means homeowners are building an incredible amount of equity in an extremely short period of time. While real estate has historically had the reputation for being one of the most solid and reliable investments, the housing market crash of 2007-2008 (resulting in the Great Recession) understandably discouraged a lot of people from investing in real estate. However, if you are one of those people, now is the time to get back into it! Banks and lending institutions learned their lessons after that whole debacle,
30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • DECEMBER 2021
and mortgages are now more secure than ever. The real estate market has absolutely earned back its reputation. It’s once again the place to be if you are looking to get a great return on your investment. And again, market analysts are predicting that these current conditions will persist into the new year, possibly even through the latter part of the year, although they can’t obviously last forever. Inevitably, the market will adjust. Two key factors are the productivity and adaptivity of the builders, and it’s only a matter of time before they modify their processes and catch up. Supply chain woes will eventually be ironed out and construction will pick up again. Prices will eventually come down
and interest rates will go up. No one can say with any degree of certainty when this will happen, but we know that it will. All of which is to say, you should get into the market now while the going is good! If you’ve been following the last few monthly installments, you’ll remember that the team at Beltran Properties has been growing. In recent months, they’ve hired 3 new brokers, Jason Windell, Davide Cook, and Greg Kozina. Jaimy is proud to announce that they are doing exceptionally well and settling into their new positions nicely. The team grows stronger every day and he is both optimistic and enthusiastic about their future. That said, the Beltrans are always looking for talented, motivated individuals who are interested in joining the business.
As we approach the end of 2021, there are many of us who are surprised by how this year turned out. But this year the real estate market really shined. So we can expect 2022 to be even better! For anyone interested in getting into the market, now is the time! Contact Sherine directly to find out what you’ll need to get started in real estate or to find out about joining their team: 503-502-5536 or Sherine@BeltranProperties.com. She’s added over 130 agents to their eXp Realty organization in the past three years. She can help you, too!
