Test the tires. Check your tire pressure and tread to make sure they’re both ready to put on a lot of miles. Get Your Car Ready for a Road Trip
Bring smart snacks. Buying snacks on the road can be expensive and time
Without a car built to handle all your passengers, your luggage and the long roads ahead, your trip could be over before it ever gets a chance to begin. Make sure your ride is up for the vacation by tuning it up and preparing yourself: Check your oil. Your oil lubricates your engine so friction and heat don’t cause more wear on it than necessary. Even if you’re great about taking your car in for a regular oil change or changing it yourself, always give it a good look before you hit the road for a long trip. Pull the dipstick out while the engine is cool, grab a paper towel, wipe it off and dip it again. If it’s low, refill it to its maximum level. While you’re at it, check out the transmission and differential oil levels, too. Don’t forget to check it at other points during your trip and when you get back home — a long trek could reduce its level more quickly than normal. Scan the hoses and belts. Everything under your hood is exposed to the extreme heat that your engine produces — and the belts and hoses that keep your engine running smoothly are no exception. Check them and make sure they aren’t showing excessive signs of wear or obvious damage. If you’re comfortable and experienced in performing routine maintenance on your car, consider keeping a hose patch kit in your trunk, just in case. Just make sure your engine and all its components have
consuming — plus, your options will lean towards the unhealthy side of the spectrum. That’s why it’s a great idea to pack some in advance! Opt for singleserving sizes and things that aren’t sticky or melty. Considering bringing snacks like nuts, string cheese, grapes, baby carrots, beef jerky, granola bars and trail mix. Make sure you bring both salty and sweet treats so you hit those cravings without giving in to those pesky junk food temptations. Stock up on bottled water. Having water on hand isn’t just great for quenching your thirst. It can be helpful if your engine overheats, or if there’s a spill to clean up in the car. Stock up on water-flavoring packets or drops to add some zip to your water without adding a lot of empty calories. Combined with those snacks you packed earlier, you’ll save money that you can use on more important things when you get to your destination! Plan for comfort. There’s no way around it — long car trips can be uncomfortable. But you can try to make things as cozy as possible by packing pillows and blankets. When it’s time for a pit stop, be sure to get out of the car for a walk and stretch your legs. Sometimes just changing seats helps relieve some aches and pains. World of Speed Motorsports Museum
The Hidden Gem In Your Backyard
E
ven though World of Speed Motorsports Museum pulls in visitors from across the state and country, as well as from around the globe, some local residents still don’t know much about the Museum, located off 95th Avenue in a former car dealership building. “We hear ‘I see the sign from the freeway every day and I kept meaning to stop by’ from our visitors a lot,” says the Museum’s Executive Director Dave Pearson. “Once they come by and see everything we’re doing, they realize we are much more than a car museum.” World of Speed opened in April 2015 and is the only museum in the Pacific Northwest that showcases cars, motorcycles, and hydroplanes. Much of the collection and the exhibits on display in the galleries have Northwest roots and connections, including exhibits about Portland International Raceway and the Woodburn Drag Strip. The Museum opens several new feature exhibits each year, along with a host of other vehicles that are continually changing to
offer guests something new every time they visit. “We work hard to keep things fresh and exciting,” say Curator Ron Huegli. “Sometimes we can get a special car for just a few weeks, in between car shows or races. They don’t fit into a feature exhibit, but they showcase a different part of motorsports or motorsports history and have a story that needs to be told.” Pearson says the Museum is committed to creating exhibits of national importance or relevance, and in March they opened Mario Andretti: Racing Royalty, a look back at the five-decade career of America’s most successful racecar driver. “We worked closely with Mario and his family to create this exhibit and have some exclusive video we shot with them early this year that help make this exhibit something special,” says Pearson. Some of the cars include Mario’s first race car, a reproduction of the 1949 Hudson he built with twin brother Aldo, and the rare 1967 Ford GT40 Mk IV that Mario won the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race with. The other feature exhibit on display is Harley-Davidson: America’s Motorcycle

which celebrates the iconic company’s role in American culture. Highlights of the exhibit include a bike from the popular TV show Sons of Anarchy and a world-record breaking landspeed bike from Steve Dorn. But the Museum is much more than just cars and motorcycles. The Automotive Learning Center is home to two high-tech classrooms and an educational automotive shop with 11 bays. As part of World of Speed’s commitment to Career and Technical Education, the Museum hosts nine different high schools for automotive classes each week during the school year, including three schools in the West Linn-Wilsonville school district. The Museum offers a behind-the-scenes tour of the program on most Saturdays.
This year, the program added an advanced class for second-year students which has been a big hit. “This is the favorite part of my day. I think that there are a lot of students who don’t

do well in the classroom but could do well with a hands-on class like this. This class engages people and motivates you to learn more. I think hands-on classes like this get people excited about learning,” says Greg, a second-year student. The summer months at World of Speed are filled with week-long camps for kids in grades K-12. These racing-inspired STEAM-focused camps include Racing 101 and 201, where campers race go-karts at nearby Pat’s Acres and take a spin on the three racecar simulators in the Museum. Parents can sign up for the camps online at www.worldofspeed.org/ camps; members of the Museum get a discount on camp registration. This past summer, World of Speed launched Otto’s Storytime Garage, a great resource for local parents with pre-schoolers. Each Friday at 10:30 a.m. in the Start Line Club, Museum staff or volunteers read an automotive or motorsports-themed book to the children and lead the group in a story-related craft or activity. Otto’s Storytime Garage is sponsored by a grant from the City of Wilsonville that allows lower-income families to come and enjoy storytime (and the Museum) for free.
The Start Line Club is filled with interactive educational games and activities that engage children at multiple development levels, but the Super Service Center is a favorite for many kids. It’s a kid-sized, twosided model car that replicated the experience of an actual auto repair shop, including changing tires and checking the oil!
Another highlight at the Museum is the Archive, where the photos, films, artifacts, technical drawings, and other memorabilia donated by the motorsports community are carefully stored and preserved. The Archive Room has rotating displays of the collection out for public viewing each weekend. The Archive also shares the collection online at cdm16938.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm and videos at vimeo.com/worldofspeed The Museum has been designed to host events of all sizes – from children’s birthday parties to intimate gatherings in the Atomic Lounge (a mid-century modern marvel) to corporate training events or galas with 800 people or more. They have an on-site event staff that help you curate an event your guests won’t soon forget, along with ample parking in their two-acre lot. For more information, check out the private events page online at www.worldofspeed.org/event-space-rental If you’re looking for a great gift the car-lover in your family, be sure to check out the Museum Store. You can find a great selection of books and apparel, along with other automotive-related merchandise just inside the main lobby. But the best thing about the Museum is how it brings families together. “We see lots families come through the Museum where the grandparent is pointing out to the kids and grandkids a car or motorcycle they grew up driving or wanting to ride,” says Pearson. “It can help bridge that generational gap, even if it’s for just the day.” The World of Speed Motorsports Museum is located at 27490 SW 95th Ave. in Wilsonville, and is open Tuesday – Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are also open on Mondays during public school spring and winter breaks and on several Monday Holidays. How to Finance Your Small Business’ Future
Identify what your small business is doing right, then capitalize on it. While some people romanticize about being the self-made entrepreneur, rarely does an individual with nothing but a dream and $5 in the bank bootstrap an idea into a business empire. Remember the old adage “it takes money to make money?” More often, those self-made entrepreneurs need periodic infusions of cash to reach new heights. ”Financing is a bet on future income,” says Mike Michalowicz, business expert and author of the book Profit First. “So if you receive financing, you have to have confidence that you’re going to be able to repay that in the future.” Whether the goal is growth or survival, there comes a point in nearly every entrepreneur’s life when he or she must consider whether or not to seek outside financing. That’s the point when you’ve figured out that what you’re doing is right, says Michalowicz. When you know what’s working, “that’s when you finance it because now it’s a cash machine.”
Financing Your Small Business’ Future If you do decide that financing is in your future, here are three options for infusing your business with cash. Apply for a small business bank loan. “I’m a big fan of banks, specifically credit unions,” Michalowicz says. One reason is because they are easily accessible. “You can just walk down the street and there’s a source of money.” However, getting approved may not be so easy, particularly if your business doesn’t have a strong track record or a good credit rating. If your business is considered particularly risky, you may get a loan but with higher interest rates. One way to help alleviate a bank’s concerns is to consider a Small Business Administration (SBA) loan. “If you seek a loan and the banks see you as higher-risk, the SBA will step in and say, ‘we’re going to take on that risk,’” says Michalowicz. That makes it easier for you to get approved. Reach out to venture capitalists. Another source of funding small business owners may consider is the venture capitalist (VC) or angel investor. These are typically wealthy individuals who were likely former entrepreneurs themselves. Not only do they invest in businesses, but they often introduce business owners to new connections, which can sometimes be even more valuable than money. The downside is they’re harder to find than banks and they become a partner in your business. “When you get a loan from a bank, the bank isn’t going to come to your next meeting and say, ‘OK, here’s what you should be doing in your business,’” Michalowicz says. “An angel investor absolutely may be doing that.” Access fast cash via credit cards — but be careful. The funding source that makes Michalowicz the most nervous is credit cards. “The upside is that it’s instant money,” he says. The downside is that you personally guarantee the loan, meaning you’re personally responsible for paying it back. “Secondly, credit cards typically have extremely high interest rates,” he says, which can ultimately hamstring your business just when you need money the most. Financing is a gamble on future income, so you need to make sure you’re making good bets. That means investing the time to distinguish between what’s working in your business and what’s not. Michalowicz says, “The time to head to the bank or VC is when you have the confidence that you’ll be able to pay that money back very quickly and make more money, which is the objective.” While your small business grows, make sure you’re protecting everything you’ve worked for. Kyle Bunch and his team can help you craft a policy tailored to your small business’s needs.

One of the most common questions I am asked from these new folks to town is, “What’s Wilsonville like?” Always, my response is that it’s an awesome community. It is home to beautiful parks, excellent schools, and all kinds of great businesses. However, what makes it a truly special place are its people. In my experience, the majority of people who live in Wilsonville don’t view themselves as just “residents”; rather, they see themselves as community members. Being community is what makes Wilsonville special today and what can keep it so for future generations. The Wilsonville community is why we’ve joined with publisher Active Media to help launch this new magazine called WILSONVILLE LIVING.
The purpose of Wilsonville Living magazine is to share the many stories of our Wilsonville community. We all live very busy lives, so it can be hard to keep up to speed on all the great happenings in Wilsonville. This is why every month in Wilsonville Living you will find a wealth of useful information via calendars and articles about terrific community events, programs, and opportunities for fun and learning. Since it is the people of Wilsonville who make our city a great community in which to live, work, and play, you can also expect to read in your Wilsonville Living magazine some very “Interesting!“, “Cool!”, and “Wow, I didn’t know that!” stories about the people and businesses of Wilsonville. If you have a good story idea, please drop us an email. We would love to hear from you! In fact, if you have any feedback (what you love or what you’d like to see us do better), please contact us. Our email, phone, and Facebook contact information are listed below. All the best, Kevin Ferrasci O’Malley, CEO kevin@wilonvillechamber.com 503-682-0411 X:2 www.facebook.com/wilsonvillechamber

Does it Spark Joy?
By: Courtney Smith
HOW TO MAKE CLEANING EASIER... Are you dealing with clutter but you can’t seem to get rid of this or that items for many different reasons? Do you have constant thoughts running through your head about why you can’t get rid of that item or declutter that room? Are there constant excuses that pop up like “I can’t get rid of that item because it has a memory”, or you think about the “what if” and the future, or even just because someone gave it to you and you don’t want to upset them? Well here is a solution for you! According to Marie Kondo, tidying expert, bestselling author, and star of Netflix’s hit show; you should never discard anything without saying thank you and good-bye. Never let go of an article of clothing, a book, note, random tool, or a sentimental item without first saying thank you, and good-bye. After you’ll feel much better. Yes, this sounds ridiculous, but there is a method to this madness. 22 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE - JUNE 2019
Most tidying methods suggest going room-by-room or starting slow and in a small area, which feels like it takes forever and never ends. The KonMari Method™ encourages tidying by category – not by location – beginning with clothes, then moving on to books, papers, and then sentimental items. Keep only those things that speak to the heart, and discard items that no longer spark joy. Thank them for their service – then let them go. People around the world have been drawn to this philosophy not only because of how well it works, but also because it makes it easier to move forward and reach your goals.
SIX EASY RULES TO START YOUR CLEANING: • Commit yourself to tidying up • Imagine your ideal lifestyle • Discard what you don’t want first • Tidy by category, not by location • Follow the right order • Ask yourself if it sparks joy Summer is around the corner, and after saying good-bye, thanking your items, and following these basic Marie Kondo rules, your summer will be sparked with joy and the to do list will be filled with entertainment instead of chores.

FUN IN THE GARDEN
The Sun Is Out... and yard care is in full swing by Courtney Smith
The weather is getting warmer and it is paramount to get your yard healthy. A beautiful lawn doesn’t happen by itself, it takes care and attention to detail. Schedule time to put love into your yard this spring and you will enjoy the benefits all summer.
Knowing the following will help: • Remove any leaves and other garden debris that have accumulated over winter. • Re-seed bare or brown patches in your lawn • Make sure your lawn is getting at least an inch of water every week. • Set a routine schedule for mowing to keep it looking neat, well-kept, and will also keep it healthy by eliminating pests. • Know how short to mow your lawn so you don’t have to remove the clippings. Grass-cycling can save time, money and fertilizer. • Embrace good bugs like ladybugs, bees, praying mantises and spiders while avoiding unwanted bugs like aphids or Japanese beetles.
24 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE - JUNE 2019
• Use natural weed repellent with dish soap, white vinegar, and lemon juice mixed together. • Trim your trees and get rid of the dead wood. Dead wood on trees can lead to insect infestations mold or diseases that can ruin your other trees. It is best to trim hardwoods in the late winter or early spring. Flowering fruit trees should be trimmed when blooms appear in the spring. • Get your new plants off to a good start by thoroughly soaking the soil • Attract birds to your garden. A single chickadee can consume up to 1,000 bad bugs a day. Include a birdbath as well as seed- and fruit-bearing plants, like sunflower, honeysuckle, viburnum, aster, salvia and zinnia.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK BY COURTNEY SMITH
Meet Susan Schenk, a local artist that has lived in Wilsonville for 25 years with her husband. She is a retired school teacher that has turned her basement into a creative zone where she can express her artistic side. Susan has had an appreciation and love for art her entire life, but unfortunately, she was unable to pursue that career when she was younger.
appealing images, it is absolutely magical how small her carbon footprint is, Susan even uses recycled picture frames! You can view more of her art or contact her by visiting her website at www.susanschenk.com
When asking Susan what Wilsonville meant to her as an artist, the passion just shines through her soul. As an active volunteer, she has seen the growth of the city and loves being a part of it. Susan said “while everyone my age was downsizing, my Susan’s art is an invitation to see beyond husband and I decided to upsize. Having our house what is apparent. From a distance, her surrounded by nature instead of neighbor, but only works of art appear to be paintings but up being 1 mile away from the heart of Wilsonville close they are recycled jumbled pieces of Yamhill Grainery, Mixed Media Collage and all the city services is just amazing.” Susan paper. These collages are similar to our may have unconventional collaged art, but it is not lives; appealing when viewed from afar but somewhat surprising only unique, it is beautiful! when inspected more intimately. Based on inspiration from her backyard, she focuses on collages that feature animals, nature, Ending with a note from the artist to you, “Even if you don’t go to landscapes, and flowers. Her art uses discarded materials from art school or have a job creating art, you can always find ways to recycle bins and junk mail, as she feels that there is beauty in infuse your life with art and let that inner artist out! Even if it’s with everything, it was just overlooked and thrown away. Susan’s a hobby or a focus on craft work, it employs skills that you need. artwork discovers lines, shapes, and color that others have tossed Don’t diminish your expressions for art, find ways to express things away. By transforming maps, magazines, and other ephemera into even if it’s not a full time job.” 28 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE - JUNE 2019

TOP 5
Summer Safety Tips for Pet Parents
Hope you are having a nice summer! With the hot weather setting in, we wanted to remind folks that amidst the fun and games, pet health should be kept top of mind to help ensure a safe season for all. To keep dogs and cats out of harm’s way, the ASPCA has created a helpful infographic with the Top 5 Summer Dangers for Pets, including:
1 2
Loud noises like fireworks are one of the top reasons pets go missing, so secure your pet in an escape-proof place. If your pet does go missing, download the ASPCA app for a free step-by-step digital toolkit to help find your pet: www.ASPCAapp.org.
SUN & HEAT
High summer temperatures and bright days can mean dehydration, overheating, and scorched paws. Know the signs of overheating (excessive panting, increased heart rate, and weakness) and bring your pup indoors or to a cool, shady place.
3 4
FIREWORKS & THUNDERSTORMS
TOXIC CHEMICALS
Insecticides, citronella products, and glow sticks are toxic to pets. Keep your pet away from areas where chemicals have been sprayed and ensure dangerous products are out of reach.
PARTIES & BARBECUES If your pet’s joining the party, make sure guests don’t feed your pet human food (especially grapes, onions, avacado, and chocolate) and ensure alcoholic drinks are kept out of your pet’s reach.
5
HOT CARS
Even with the windows open an inch, a car’s temperature can reach over 100° in 10 minutes on an 85° day. One quick errand can turn dangerous in minutes, so leave your pet safely at home. Sign our Hot Car Pledge to help save lives this summer and all year long.
