We Love These Reviews! Jaimy had my back every step of the way!!! He is incredibly responsive and proactive. He understood what was important to me and laid out all my options; basically I wanted to put in as minimal effort as possible and he informed me of what to realistically expect. He was very strategic on both my sell and my purchase; he was confident in his guidance, he took all the stress off my shoulders, he was a creative problem solver and he made sure I didn’t sell myself short. He helped devise a smart offer which got accepted so I didn’t have the stress of having to put in multiple offers and getting denied. He even averted a crisis for me that was definitely above and beyond. I knew without a shadow of a doubt that Jaimy had my best interest at heart.

Lumera Regenerative Medicine
A Healing & Healthy Well-Being Hormone Replacement, EMsculpt neo & More State-of-the-Art Treatments By Barbara Sherman
T
he Proverbial Fountain of Youth Has Landed In Tualatin. In June 2020, Dr. Roberta Huang opened Lumera Regenerative Medicine, which focuses on hormone imbalance in the body that can cause fatigue, weight gain, mood changes, and low libido. They offer skincare, including micro-needling with PRP (platelet-rich plasma) that stimulates collagen production, laser treatments, Botox and fillers, biologique recherche™ facial treatments, Emsculpt Neo™ treatment, and treatments for sexual wellness. After 20+ years as an obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Huang grew frustrated with 15-minute patient visits. “In short visits, you just can’t cover everything,” she said. “People like having extra time to talk about deeper issues. This is our opportunity to do a deeper dive.” Which led to her founding Lumera Regenerative Medicine. “I actually started with sexual enhancement and then fell into the hormone side of medicine. A lot of people don’t realize that there are many options available to help with sexual issues. That’s how we hope to brand ourselves. And hormones are especially helpful with menopause and peri-menopause.” Dr. Huang is one of two providers in Oregon who use the “diVa™ laser” that rejuvenates the vagina and helps with incontinence, vaginal laxity and lubrication, and she has an Emsella™ chair that uses magnetic energy to exercise and strengthen the pelvic floor to help with sexual arousal and incontinence.
Dr. Roberta Huang MD, FACOG
Our team of medical specialists and certified Aestheticians have years of experience. They have been trained in the latest technology specifically to help our patients get the results they want.
Another technique to foster more sexual sensitivity involves drawing blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to produce PRP that is reinjected into sexual organs. Wherever PRP is injected into the body, the body starts healing that area. “We call it the P-Shot™ for men and O-Shot™ for women, and there is minimal discomfort,” Dr. Huang said. “It works, but insurance doesn’t pay for it. The beauty of these things is that they are minimally invasive and don’t require surgery.” Another technique places pellets under the skin that slowly release hormones over four months for women and over five months for men. Postmenopausal women who have not had breast cancer receive a mixture of estrogen and testosterone that “can really help through those rough years,” Dr. Huang said. “I have seen women in their 60s and 70s who are still having hot flashes.” According to Dr. Huang, healing and healthy well-being start at home. She said, “The pillars of well-being are a good diet, exercise, and getting enough sleep, plus having a healthy psyche that includes good social interaction. Outside of medicine and true to her word about well-being, she enjoys gardening, painting, listening to and playing music, preparing memorable meals for family and friends, and enjoying the splendor of the Pacific Northwest outdoors with her family. Lumera Regenerative Medicine is located at 6464 SW Borland Road, Suite C3, in Tualatin. For more information, visit lumeramedical.com or call 503-852-9680.

BEAUTY TIPS
DIVINE COMPLEXIONS
YUMI Academy Coming Soon to Wilsonville By Christine Lewy, Beauty Expert
Coming soon to Wilsonville YUMI (you-me) Academy! Certification for the #1 Lash Lift brand in the world YUMI Lashes, as well as brow lamination! What does this mean? It means that YUMI has asked me, Divine Complexions Spa owner Christine Lewy, to be the Northwest Regional Trainer for YUMI Lashes! I am very honored and excited to offer education of this superior treatment to the Northwest region. Currently if you want to get certified with YUMI you have to travel to one of their regional locations such as Beverly Hills. What is a YUMI Lash Lift? Eyelash lifts curl your own natural lashes up and with a YUMI Lash Lift it infuses keratin into the lashes to strengthen them and then tints your lashes with black. A lash lift does not add fullness or length like lash extensions does, but it does not require a change in lifestyle. With a lash lift you can rub and wash your lashes, wear mascara, and sleep however you want. A lash lift will also not damage your natural lashes, at least with YUMI! What makes YUMI different? Well, when I set out to bring lash lifts into my spa I wanted the best, the lash lift I would get for myself and I discovered that was YUMI. It’s a product from Paris, and so has stricter standards for ingredient. The YUMI products do not contain formaldehyde or ammonia that other lash lift brands do. You don’t want those things near your eyes! A YUMI Lash Lift lasts the length of your lash cycle, which for shorter lashes is about 6 to 8 weeks and for longer lashes, especially those using a growth serum, can last up to 12 weeks! A lash lift is great for almost anyone, teenagers all the way up.
Christine Lewy
Licensed Esthetician, Owner of Divine Complexions Spa, and West Coast Regional Glo Skin Beauty Makeup Artist. It’s been an incredibly huge part of my spa. It’s one of the services some people might not know of but once you get it you fall in love, but remember not all lash lifts are created equal, YUMI is by far the superior product in quality. So back to YUMI Academy what does this mean. I have a history in aesthetics education and I absolutely love sharing my passion. So when YUMI asked me to teach certification classes for the whole northwest region I didn’t think twice about it. YUMI Academy will be a one day in depth in person class to get certified to perform YUMI Lash Lifts and Brow Lamination. And if you know Divine Complexions you know I don’t do anything small or basic. Since I am known for my brow waxing precision brow waxing techniques, I’m also going to include brow mapping! Currently if you wanted to get certified to do YUMI Lash Lifts or YUMI Eyebrow Lamination you’d have to travel down to Beverly Hills or to one of their other locations in San Francisco Chicago or Miami or New York City. Now those living in Oregon Washington Idaho and surrounding areas will be able to come to Wilsonville instead of having to travel further. The certification class is open to anyone, but to be able to offer this service as a professional do you need to check with the Oregon Health Authority for licensing information or for your location. Classes will begin in May! So I’m hard at work to bring YUMI Academy to Wilsonville a subdivision of Divine Complexions but in reality it’s own entity to offer exceptional educational classes for lash lifts and brow laminations. It’s a big deal and I’m very excited about it!

ARTS & CULTURE
A Voice Like No Other Dr. Sarah Maines By David Bates, Contributing Writer
Y
ou probably haven’t thought of musicians this way, but singers are athletes, and like other athletes pushing their bodies to the limit, they can get injured - and that’s where Dr. Sarah Maines can help. Sarah is a Portland area musician and teacher who, in addition to basic voice training, offers artistic and habilitative voice instruction. “We keep singers in top vocal shape for their chosen genre and help rebalance and strengthen the voice after an injury or strain,” she said. “I’ve had multiple students who came to me with issues severe enough to require surgery on their vocal folds who now maintain successful singing careers.” Sarah grew up on a cattle ranch in Eastern Oregon, where she spent a lot of time on horseback or helping out in her mother’s huge garden. Music was “ever-present” in the family. National Public Radio’s Performance Today was always playing, and her mom played the flute. “My first understanding of harmony came from singing hymns in the front pew, hearing my brother and dad sing bass, my mom and sisters sing alto and sometimes tenor while I sang soprano,” said Sarah. The family would sing on road trips, and after long days of working on the ranch, her “Dad would sing to keep our spirits up.” Sarah joined the Treasure Valley Children’s Chorus in Ontario when she was ten and also played trumpet in jazz and pep bands in middle and high school. She studied music at Berea College in Kentucky where she fell in love with pedagogy (teaching) as a senior. Then, another epiphany. “Just after graduating, I experienced some vocal health issues due to 18 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2022
laryngopharyngeal reflux,” she said. Working with a professional voice specialist in Ohio, Sarah became “completely smitten with the world of voice care.” “It was immediately obvious to me that this is my purpose,” she said. “I’ve been teaching ever since.” She earned her doctorate at Shenandoah Conservatory in Virginia, and even before she moved to Portland about 15 years ago, Sarah had already instructed hundreds of students. Along with teaching in her private studio, Sarah currently accepts referrals from the OHSU Voice Clinic, works with laryngologist Dr. James Thomas of voicedoctor.net in Portland, and teaches at the University of Portland. Her students regularly win awards, scholarships, and are cast in leading roles in musicals and perform professionally around the world. Today, new students can reach out to Sarah through her website, themainestudio. musicteachershelper.com. The process begins with an email conversation about the student’s history, experience and goals. If the fit seems right, an initial lesson is scheduled so Sarah can assess the student’s voice and they can talk more about goals. When not teaching voice instruction, she’s also an active union member of the Portland Opera Chorus and performs regularly with the Resonance Ensemble, Fear No Music, and is active in the Portland area musical theater scene.

NATIONAL
Prepareathon! DAY
APRIL 30TH
Prepareathon! Day reminds us that crises happen suddenly. Being prepared needs to happen now, not later. Natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or wildfires require us to make decisions with little or no warning. Do you have an emergency plan in place with your family in the even of an emergency situation? PrepareAthon! Day offers tools and resources for communities and citizens that help them to prepare in the event of a disaster. Large or small, it takes members of the community getting involved to help keep a crisis from turning into a tragedy. While our emergency resources supply one arm of the response team, many others step forward. Some help with a supply chain while others coordinate medical personnel. Communication is also vital to a successful plan. When everyone has a blueprint, our plans run more smoothly. Take part in your community’s preparedness plans. The New York Yankees, who take corporate-management levels of pride in policing their players' facial hair, are too self-consciously dignified for a mascot.”

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT
SERVING WITH IMPACT By Tyler Francke, Contributing Writer
L
ocal nonprofit The Canby Center is busy as ever, as their team of staff and volunteers works hard to provide a fresh solution to poverty!
“We have a lot happening right now with just meeting the basic needs of people,” Development Director Steve Nelson explains. “For us, that means a focus on food. During the pandemic, there was this huge explosion of need that we were able to respond to. We had to do a lot of adapting to make that happen, but fortunately, we had great support from the community.” From February to March 2020, the Center saw demand for food more than quadruple, as layoffs, business closures, and other economic uncertainties created—or in some cases, exacerbated—food and housing insecurity for many families. The Center was able to weather the storm, Nelson says, with tremendous financial support from the community, as well as food donations and countless volunteer hours from partnering agencies like Canby Police and Canby Fire as well as individuals. “It’s leveled off now, to a certain extent,” Nelson says. “But it’s still much more than twice as much as what we were serving before the pandemic. So the changes that we made to be able to serve those needs well are still in place, and we’re really busy.” With some of the physical needs lessening and stabilizing in the local community, the Center hopes to begin to shift some energy to other areas in the new year as part of its holistic approach to serving the community. Nelson says the Center has been engaging in numerous discussions with the Canby School District about various ways the nonprofit could help serve 30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2022
local students and families in need, such as the return of its popular Reading Mentors program. In that program, volunteer mentors spend an hour each week reading one-on-one with students (a half-hour with each), talking with them and reading with them—with the ultimate goal of taking a relationship-based approach to help inspire a love of learning. “It’s really a way for them to have a regular connection with an adult, doing something that’s going to have lifelong value for them,” Nelson explains. For older students, the Center hopes to soon launch a new program called Growing Together, a youth mentoring program for middle school-age children that the nonprofit has been developing for the past few years. Like Reading Mentors, it involves partnering kids with mentors and role models in the community for tutoring purposes, but also has a focus on building character through developing traits like respect, kindness, and integrity. “That’s an exciting program that we have designed,” Nelson says. “We’ve developed the curriculum, so we’re just waiting to launch when the opportunity presents itself.” The Canby Center is located at 681 Southwest 2nd Avenue in Canby. For more information about services through The Canby Center or how you can volunteer or support their work, call 503-266-2920, email info@thecanbycenter. org, or visit www.thecanbycenter.org.

HISTORY
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
or the multitude of travelers crossing the Interstate Bridge between Oregon and Washington, Jantzen Beach is simply a vast spread of shopping centers, restaurants, and hotels clustered on Hayden Island as you zoom past. Many will have a vague notion of the area being associated with the Jantzen brand of swimwear, but with each passing year the memories of the iconic Jantzen Beach Amusement Park dwindle into obscurity. Back in the day, hailed as the “Coney Island of the West,” Hayden Island was once home to the largest amusement park in the nation—a massive park encompassing 123 acres that was patronized by over 30 million people during its 42 years of operation. It all began in 1927 when William A. Logus and Leo F. Smith purchased forty acres on Hayden Island from the Portland Electric Power Company. Shortly thereafter, Logus and Smith launched the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park, named after Carl Jantzen of swimwear fame; along with a number of Jantzen executives and several prominent members of the community, Carl 32 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2022
Jantzen underwrote the entire $500,000 project. Jantzen and his fellow investors envisioned the park as a showcase to promote swimming as a public activity, which later included the company’s sponsorship of national “Learn to Swim” weeks throughout the 1940s and ‘50s. With swimming as a primary focus of the park, four gigantic swimming pools were constructed as well as a natatorium (an indoor swimming facility). The Jantzen Beach Amusement Park officially opened on May 26, 1928. In addition to the swimming pools, the park also featured a number of popular rides including the Big Dipper Roller Coaster and a custom-made carousel. Constructed by C.W. Parker, the “American Amusement King,” the carousel was hand-crafted in 1921 and first operated at Venice Beach in Los Angeles. After surviving a fire, the carousel was later shipped to Portland where it became a highlight attraction at Jantzen Beach. Of the various rides created by Parker, only the carousel survives
today. It resides in the custodianship of Restore Oregon, an organization with plans to reassemble and install the carousel in a permanent new home that will “serve as a new attraction for our region.” On a spooky note, the carousel was for years the source of ghost stories. A number of youngsters, as well as maintenance workers, claimed to have witnessed ghostly children on or about the ride. The Big Dipper Roller Coaster, designed by Carl Phare, took center stage as the featured attraction of the park. The “Dipper,” a gigantic amusement construction, boasted to be the largest roller coaster west of Chicago, traveling 3800 feet per minute with 14 dips, 5 of them in excess of 35 feet, and the steepest dip which plunged riders 70 feet straight down. For the more faint of heart, the park offered a Kiddy Dipper roller coaster, and included arcade games and picnic grounds. One of the biggest draws of the park was the Golden Canopy Ballroom, which became Portland’s premier dancehall during the 1930s and ‘40s. In 1942, Clara Shepard of the Spectator newspaper wrote: “If a young man about town says dancin’ to a girl, he might as well say Jantzen Beach at the same time…for they are synonymous as far as she is concerned. The Golden Canopy Ballroom features the sweetest swing in the country every night of the park’s season, with a parade of big name dance bands moving across its board…” Shepard’s description was no exaggeration. World famous musicians such as Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong performed at Jantzen Beach to the delight of thousands who flocked to the park for unforgettable nights of top shelf entertainment. By the late 1940s, however, Jantzen Beach was in decline. Vanport, a town created during World War II to house workers at the Kaiser Shipyards in Portland and Vancouver (hence the name Vanport), was located at today’s Delta Park area and provided one of Jantzen Beach’s primary revenue sources. As the second largest city in Oregon at the time (by population), the residents of Vanport frequented Jantzen Beach for its wide variety of entertainment right in their own “backyard.” After the Vanport Flood of 1948, which effectively destroyed the majority of the town, and the
decline in population after the war, this important revenue stream dried up for the once thriving park. Changes in the society at large also contributed to the decline of Jantzen Beach. While television rose to prominence as America’s go-to entertainment, people frequently opted to stay home rather than venture out during their leisure time. When they did venture out, the boundless freedom of the automobile—now a staple of American society—offered endless opportunities for recreational activities. The allure of the traditional amusement park had lost its luster. In 1960, a fire broke out in the Tunnel of Love, resulting in its destruction as well as that of the Fun House and the Dutch Mill. In the face of incidents and declining attendance, the Jantzen Beach Amusement Park closed its doors after Labor Day weekend in 1970. Following the closure of the amusement park, Jantzen Beach Center, a large shopping complex, eventually arose, and for some years housed the historic C.W. Parker carousel, which may operate again one day should Restore Oregon succeed in constructing a new home for it. The pumping system for the swimming pools of the old amusement park are still in use today, providing drinking water for residents of the Hayden Island area. And wooden remnants of the Big Dipper Roller Coaster live on at Ken’s Artisan Pizza on S.E. 28th St. in Portland, where they have been repurposed as tables, as well as the bar itself. So the next time you’re caught in traffic on I-5 near Jantzen Beach, allow yourself to daydream a little about the “Coney Island of the West,” that famous amusement park on the Columbia from days gone by that brought joy to millions, and memories to last a lifetime, for those fortunate enough to share in the experience.

Easter History: Hares, Eggs, & Candy By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Easter is about rebirth, renewal, and fertility. This is evident in symbols like the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, which eventually led to chocolate eggs, marshmallow Peeps, and the second best-selling candy holiday in America! Let’s take a quick look at how Easter has changed over the years.
Easter Bunny
According to legend, the Easter bunny first came to 1700s America with German immigrants who settled in Pennsylvania and brought along their tradition of an egg-laying rabbit called “Osterhase” or “Oschter Haws.” Children made outdoor nests so this curious creature could lay its colored eggs. Eventually, the tradition spread across the country, and the fabled hare’s Easter morning goodies would eventually include chocolate, candy, and gifts, while colorful baskets would replace the nests. Much like milk and cookies left out for Santa, children would often leave out carrots in case the Easter bunny got hungry from all his hopping!
Easter Eggs
From a Christian perspective, eggs were handed out during Easter service in early Orthodox churches, with the hard shell representing the sealed tomb and the cracking of the egg representing the resurrection. One explanation is that eggs used to be forbidden during Lent, so Christians would paint and decorate them to mark the end of the period of penance and fasting, then eat them on Easter as a celebration. The origin of dyeing Easter eggs is less clear, beginning anywhere from 13th century Europe or all the way back to ancient Mesopotamia. It’s rumored the early Christians of Mesopotamia dyed eggs using red to represent the blood shed on the cross. Later, missionaries may have painted biblical scenes on eggs and used them to explain the story of Easter to children. 34 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • APRIL 2022
Easter Candy
Fast forward to the 19th century, when European chocolatiers began making chocolate eggs to celebrate Easter. Nowadays, Easter is the second best-selling candy holiday in America after Halloween. The largest Easter egg ever made was over 25 feet high and weighed over 8,000 pounds, made from chocolate and marshmallow, and supported by an internal steel frame. Another egg-shaped candy is the jelly bean, first popular for Easter back in the 1930s. Over 16 billion jelly beans are made in the U.S. each year for Easter. Over the last decade, the marshmallow Peep has been the best-selling non-chocolate Easter candy. Created in the 1950s, the original Peeps were handmade, yellow marshmallow chicks, and other flavors and shapes were introduced later, including chocolate mousse bunnies! info from history.com

GRANITE TRANSFORMATIONS Written By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer

ransform that embarrassing, worn out, and outdated kitchen or bathroom into the beautiful, new, luxurious space you’ve always wanted, and with minimal demolition! Home renovations are never enjoyable. As a rule, they tend to be messy, costly, and incredibly disruptive, often spanning weeks if not months. That’s not the case, however, when you hire Granite Transformations! Their unique concept addresses these issues by preserving and utilizing the majority of your existing functional assets, and in essence, performing more of a “facelift” than a complete remodel. That equates to less mess, lower costs (40% less on average than a full remodel), and far less of a disruption to your daily life. And the results are astounding! Granite Transformations is a worldwide franchiser with some 240 franchises around the globe. They have been perfecting their methods of operation for over 20 years. Local franchisee owner Dan Lappin purchased his location, which services Oregon and southwest Washington, 6 years ago. With an entrepreneurial spirit and a vision to invest and expand, he has relocated to a brand new and highly impressive showroom in Lake Oswego which will be celebrating its Grand Opening this Spring! It was Granite Transformations’ unique process that attracted Dan to the business. Most kitchens and bathrooms are functionally sound, but over the years have just become outdated. As a result,

simply “transforming” them versus demolishing and starting from scratch makes perfect sense. Granite Transformations’ proprietary makeover methods are highly efficient, and by using recycled materials whenever possible they’re also environmentally friendly. Countertops, cabinets, sinks, backsplashes; they do it all, and everything is engineered in the US and fabricated locally. They do these “makeovers” provided there are no structural changes needed to the building itself. They refresh, customize, and reconfigure cabinetry, countertops, and entire kitchens and bathrooms within your existing walls without extensive demolition. Dan explained, they are make-up artists, not plastic surgeons! If you are interested in remodeling your kitchen or bath, call Granite Transformations first! Let them schedule a free design session to show you the amazing transformations they can provide. Their products are top-notch, require little-to-no maintenance, and come with a lifetime, transferable warranty. Why would you even need to consider anyone else? f you have been following our monthly real estate articles courtesy of our friends, Jaimy and Sherine Beltran with the Beltran Properties Group at eXp Realty, it won’t come as any surprise to hear that the market has been extraordinarily hot this past year. They have consistently kept us apprised of all the current trends, provided us with helpful hints on how to most effectively navigate the market and how to avoid major pitfalls. Last month, we learned from Sherine that the market is not only an attractive proposition for those looking to buy or sell a home right now, it’s also an attractive place to seek a new career. If you’ve ever considered this as a possibility, now is the time to do it, and Sherine Beltran is the best mentor in the business.

I have witnessed the kinds of programs Sherine has developed in order to help other agents, and I can say without hesitation that you would be remiss not to utilize her expertise. You will only improve your business just by associating with her. This past month, I was invited to listen in on one of her regular “Mastermind” classes; online classes which she conducts along with a variety of industry experts who all provide input on numerous relevant topics. These classes are ideal for agents new to the industry as well as existing agents looking to grow.

Last Month’s Topic for the Top Agent Secrets Mastermind: Finding Hidden Business Most agents, at one point or another, have found that their well of leads has dried up. The reason for that, as discussed in Sherine’s Mastermind class, is that agents, like all business people, fall into routines. One of the best ways to find new business is to deviate from your standard practices and traverse avenues you’re less versed in. Over the course of the discussion, numerous ideas were submitted: old-school cold calling, emailing, video messaging, print advertising, and attending events. So if you’re regularly employing two of these methods, perhaps trying one or more of the others could open up some new opportunities.
Find out what other places Sherine touted as resources for generating business and creating new client connections by reaching out to her directly. She welcomes the conversation! Jaimy Beltran, Sherine’s husband and business partner, had this to say: “Sherine’s background in marketing, combined with her superlative organizational skills and amiable disposition, has proven key to the Beltran Team’s success with regards to branding, expansion of our network, and intra-office efficiencies. She is a fantastic listener, and she is incredibly adept at not only discovering the gaps in an organization, but also providing solutions to fill those gaps.” Jaimy admitted without reservation that he would not be one of the top agents in the region if not for Sherine’s many talents. As an agent struggling to build your business, how can you not benefit from Sherine’s guidance? Get in on these informative classes, and discover your greatest success. Contact Sherine today at: 503-502-5536.
Attending events was one method they focused a lot of attention on since that tended to be an industry expert favorite with a broad spectrum of possibilities. Such events as happy hours, potlucks, blood drives, shred events, neighborhood parties, farmer’s markets, informational classes conducted at bars, and first-time homebuyer classes, were all mentioned as options that have proven successful for agents in the past. Another great resource recommended was vendor partners. Venders, other agents, accountants, financial partners, printers, sign companies, contractors; as partners, they should all be providing you with referrals. If they are not, then perhaps you should consider finding new partners! Jaimy reminded everyone not to be afraid to ask for the referral. Fortune favors the brave, added Mike Rohrig, Director of Sales for the Beltran Team. They all agreed, you must be omnipresent in your communities in order to find success.
