W

e all know that Wilsonville has some fantastic restaurants; throw a rock in any direction and you’ll find a great place to get a burger, a gyro, italian, mexican, or chinese food. But we seem to be lacking in one key culinary area: sandwiches. When it comes to getting a delicious, gourmet, locally-sourced sandwich, we are pretty much out of luck. The good news, though, is that these amazing delicacies can be found by simply taking a short drive. Just head over to Wayward Sandwiches in downtown Canby!

Wayward Sandwiches celebrated its first year of business last October, and ever since opening they’ve collected rave reviews and cultivated a growing fanbase in Canby and throughout the region. And it’s no wonder, since their core philosophy is all about a steadfast commitment to using locally sourced ingredients and making delicious, gourmet-quality food from scratch, while also being accessible and non-pretentious.

Matt Morrissey is a West Linn resident and first-time restaurant owner, though he has over two decades of experience in the hospitality industry. That experience included managing Veritable Quandary, one of the most well-known and beloved restaurants in Portland, until it closed several years ago.

Another central figure in the vision and early success of Wayward Sandwiches is Justin Rouse, executive chef and assistant general manager. Justin is also a former VQ employee, and considering that was where he and Matt met and became friends, it could be said that this new endeavor of theirs is a phoenix of sorts, rising from the ashes of that unfortunate closure.

Matt has taken on the responsibility of carefully and thoughtfully curating the shop’s wine selection, a growing list that he plans to eventually work up to around 100 labels, featuring vintners from nearby locations like the Willamette Valley, eastern Washington and the “up-andcoming” Rogue River Valley, along with some Californian, French, Spanish and Italian favorites. Many of Wayward’s wine selections are new to the Canby market.

Matt’s focus on all things vino has given Justin free rein to produce the shop’s signature menu of meats, which they source locally and smoke in-house.

“The best part about working at a sandwich shop is you get to do all these experiments with meat,” he says.

“We do everything from scratch. That’s been the plan from the very beginning.”

At Wayward, they take that “from scratch” thing really seriously.

They make their own pickles. They make their own sauces.

They even make their peanut butter and jelly for the kids’ PB&J. The only things they don’t make themselves (their bread and cheese) are sourced locally, from places like Grano, a smallbatch artisanal bakery in Oregon City, and TMK Creamery, the award-winning cheesemakers located just outside Canby.

Both Matt and Justin share a vision and commitment to the integrity of the local food chain. This commitment, obviously, extends to the fresh produce they use as well. “All of the produce that we were paying big bucks for up in Portland is grown out here,” Justin says. “So we thought, ‘Let’s talk to our local farmers.’

We’ve been able to meet some really good farmers, and we’ve been able to forge some great relationships.”

The menu offers house sandwiches, which tend to be their unique takes on the classics (like a Romanian Pastrami Reuben

or a Cajun Chicken Club) or you can build your own. They also have wonderful soups and salads, as well as a unique and ever-changing selection of daily specials. Their house-made fries and potato chips are already becoming famous.

think what we’ve done to the Reuben is somehow sacrilegious,” says Matt. “But for every one of those people, we get five who say it’s the best Reuben they’ve ever had in their life. It’s an interesting phenomenon.”

Their Reuben is particularly popular... and controversial as it turns out. It features Emmentaler cheese (a creamier, more flavorful French alternative to the usual Swiss), a tangier version of Thousand Island dressing that they call “lost sauce,” and house-made sauerkraut that’s a lot crisper and fresher than you may be accustomed to. The most polarizing part of it is the meat, which they quickly learned had to be cut thick because their smoked pastrami was so tender it would otherwise fall apart (Reubens traditionally feature very thin slices of meat).

Despite the “controversy” around it, the Reuben has become the shop’s Number 2 seller, just behind the ever-popular grass-fed beef burger, served with smoked tomato jam, mustard aioli, TMK cheddar, bacon and iceberg lettuce on a brioche bun. Their Wayward Club, which uniquely features harissa, rounds out their top three.

A Peek Behind The Curtain At Active Media Publishers of the Wilsonville Living Magazine

I

n the classic movie The Wizard of Oz, there is an iconic moment of discovery when Dorothy follows Toto and gets a glimpse behind the curtain. There she finds that The Great & Powerful Oz is revealed to be nothing more than a funny looking old man with some hightech gadgetry. The scene is a pivotal one in the movie, but it’s even more intriguing for those who find the magical and fantastical to be less interesting than the real-life mechanisms which make the “magic” happen.

Are you one of those people who likes to peek behind the curtain? This magazine you have in your hands does not appear in your mailbox by magic. It takes a lot of work and cooperative effort to produce; it takes a team of people behind the man behind the curtain.

Allow us to pull back that curtain for a moment and take you on a little tour behind the scenes at Active Media, and introduce the people who work to publish the item you are currently holding.

First and foremost, we have Matt Nelson.

Matt is the owner, operator, manager,

and publisher of Active Media - the Great & Powerful Oz himself! He and his wife, Catrina Nelson, began the business together back in May of 2000, over 20 years ago.

Matt manages the day-to-day operations of the entire organization, including employee and customer relations. Ultimately, every decision made at Active Media is funneled through his desk at some point.

Catrina is the company’s CFO and general Human Resources manager. The first publication began as a fundraising magazine for one city, but has now grown and expanded into advertising and article-based publications for over 30 cities!

The products (the magazines themselves) have also evolved quite a bit over the years, and particularly in Wilsonville, what started out as a simple coupon magazine has morphed into something with a more personal connection to the community. The Wilsonville Living publication is now a highly customized magazine with a specific focus on local businesses, local events, and local people right here in town.

A Peek Behind The Curtain At Active Media Matt is an entrepreneur in the purest sense, one who’s constantly considering ways to improve his business model, and especially for new ideas to better serve his clients. It was through conversations with his Wilsonville clients (including Sherine Beltran of Beltran Properties, Kyle Bunch of Goosehead Insurance, and Brad Hanson of Academy Mortgage) that the idea for the Wilsonville Living magazine took hold, and further discussions with Kevin Ferrasci O’Malley of the Wilsonville Chamber of Commerce helped make that idea a reality.

Real estate groups, finance companies, insurance agents, mortgage brokers, and home improvement industries were all looking for better ways to connect with potential customers in the area. The Advantage magazine, which is a couponoriented publication, was and is still effective in many ways, but too limited in space for the amount and type of information they wanted to get out to the public.

There was a need for better connectivity between local businesses and consumers, and as the saying goes, necessity is the mother of invention. From those early meetings and discussions was born the concept for a more in-depth, article-based publication that was dedicated to highlighting local businesses in far more detailed ways than can be done in a coupon book alone. Since this new style of magazine was launched, the response from both advertisers and the community has been outstanding!

Matt is always proud to hold the finished product in his hands and recognize the work that went into it. He loves the personalized nature of the articles, and how they allow readers to get to know the people who run local businesses.

He’s very pleased to admit that the articles seem to be having the desired effect of bridging the gap between businesses and the community, of truly connecting people.

Matt has had a strong connection with the Wilsonville Community for many years now, and at one point the Active Media offices even called the city home for several years.

Matt’s always enjoyed working with the people of Wilsonville, and he especially enjoys frequenting the local restaurants and entertainment venues. He and his family can often be found enjoying a meal, running errands, or just wandering around town. He sincerely appreciates the opportunity to be able to work for and with the people of this community.

Matt’s right hand man in Wilsonville is Don Ormsby. Since he lives right here in town, Don handles the majority of Active

Media accounts for the area. He’s the guy who goes all around town each day, meeting with various business owners, discussing their needs, and setting up their advertising program for the publication. As a long-time resident, Don loves the intimate feel that Wilsonville has, while still having easy access to the surrounding areas as well.

Don has been working with Matt for many years now and is a terrific ambassador of the Active Media brand. He sincerely loves working with people and being in a position to help his customers (especially local small businesses) succeed. He’s been with Active Media long enough to witness much of the evolution that has occured with the magazines, and he’s very excited about the newer Living style publications.

Carly has lived in Wilsonville since 1994, and she loves working with local businesses and building relationships with them. While Active Media is a business, there is often a philanthropic element to what we do here and she appreciates being a part of that.

Wilsonville is a terrific, tightly-knit community of people who help take care of one another, and she’s proud to be a part of that.

Behind the scenes are several more team members who help get the job done. Jenna Preston is our fearless editor. She’s the one who determines which articles will be featured in each issue, then takes all of our unpolished musings, proofreads them, and edits (or cuts) them into multifaceted gems ready for the public readership to enjoy. Active Media employs several different writers, each with their own style, who submit their work and then it’s up to Jenna to sprinkle her fairy dust over all of these dissimilar pieces to mold them into one consistent voice.

Jenna loves all aspects of the newer style of publication, but as someone who really loves to spend time in the kitchen, she especially enjoys choosing the recipes for each issue. Although she recently moved out of the area and is now editing remotely, Jenna also taught voice and piano lessons for several years at Concert School of Music (formerly Music Man Studio). She really enjoyed her time there working with students of all ages and getting to know many of the families of Wilsonville.

Jeremy Okai Davis is our lead Graphic Designer and Art Director. He’s been with Active Media practically since the beginning and has actively helped the company develop into what it is today. Although he does not meet with clients face-to-face, he is consistently in communication with them by phone and email from initial contact through to publication, procuring artwork and images, and designing things from the ground up.

Jeremy decides the best layout and is responsible for the way everything looks in the magazine. Because of his background as a professional artist and painter, he really enjoys that aspect of the work, but he also appreciates the relationships he’s built with many of the long-time clients throughout the years. He appreciates Wilsonville for their generous selection of great restaurants, but more importantly, their close sense of community.

Stacy Benner is our Senior Graphic Designer who does a lot of hands-on work putting the publication together.

In conjunction with Jeremy, Stacy does a lot of the layout and design for the magazines, but especially the regular pieces that appear in several of our publications on a monthly basis; things like the calendar, the recipe page, games page, and seasonal pages.

Stacy has a soft spot for the articles and really enjoys reading about the various businesses in Wilsonville.

She loves how localized the magazine is, and how it specifically connects Wilsonville residents to businesses in their community. She’s envious of how much pride the people of Wilsonville take in their town, but pleased with how inclusive they remain to “outsiders.”

Nancy Reynholds is our chief administrator/office manager, and assistant accountant. She processes all of our contracts, from inputting them into the computer system, to invoicing clients, handling payments, and aiding in the bookkeeping and accounting aspects of the business. She is responsible for keeping in close communication with clients regarding their accounts with Active Media.

Nancy enjoys the articles and learning more indepth information about the businesses in town and the people who run them. She and her husband live just north of town in Tualatin, and they are frequent visitors to Wilsonville. They both love the parks and nature trails located throughout town and walk them regularly. Often they will finish one of their walks by stopping in for a delicious meal at any of the great restaurants in town.

Last, but hopefully not least, is myself: Dennis McNabb the contributing writer. I am the lucky guy who gets to contact all of the businesses we are highlighting each month and do my best to tell their story. I communicate with the owners about their origins, what inspires and motivates them, and what makes their business stand out above the competition.

I am one of the newest members of the Active Media team, but I can sincerely say that I appreciate both the team that I work with here, and the amazing people I get to interview and converse with on a daily basis. There are so many terrific businesses and business owners out there (many of whom I’d never heard of previously), people who work so hard to come up with fresh new ideas, and who continue to strive day in and day out to do their absolute best for the communities they serve. I’m so grateful and glad for the opportunity to help them succeed!

They say small business owners are the backbone of our economy.

I would argue further that they are also the backbone of our society. I am constantly humbled by the folks I’ve had the good fortune to speak with in Wilsonville Dennis McNabb and I’m in awe of this wonderfully supportive, tightly knit community.

Chocolate Fondue

Whether you’re planning a romantic evening with that special someone, or you want a fun and tasty treat for the whole family to enjoy, this Chocolate Fondue recipe is sure to be a Valentines hit! It’s easy to make, even without a fondue pot. Serve it with dip-ables such as strawberries or other slices of fruit, shortcake, pretzels, marshmallows, brownies or cookies. If you want to make a special adults-only version, try adding a couple tablespoons of Bailey’s or Amaretto for some extra flavor!

INGREDIENTS: 12 ounces of milk or dark chocolate (chips or roughly chopped if from a block) 1 Cup (8 ounces) of heavy whipping cream A pinch of salt DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat the cream with a pinch of salt over medium heat in a small saucepan until tiny bubbles show and it begins to lightly and slowly simmer.

2. Remove from heat, add the chocolate, and whisk until smooth and full incorporated.

3. Immediately transfer to a fondue pot heated at low or with a low flame, or serve straight from the pot.

4. Arrange the dip-ables on a platter or plates around the chocolate pot. Use a fondue fork, bamboo skewer, seafood fork, or salad fork to dip the fruit pieces and other dippables into the hot melted cream chocolate mixture. Eat immediately. If the fondue begins to feel a little stiff, add a tablespoon of heavy cream and stir. It will help it go a little longer. *recipe reprinted from simplyrecipes.com

I

think we can all agree that we’ve cooped up in the house, sitting around for far too long. Many of us are probably getting out of shape (if we were ever in shape to begin with), and it’s time to make a change. Dancing is a fun and fantastic way to get moving and get active, so what better time than now to give it a try?

Whether you’re an experienced dancer who’s been temporarily sidelined by the pandemic or someone who has never set foot on the dance floor, it doesn’t matter - there’s a place that can help anyone start dancing. The Arthur Murray Dance Center is a name synonymous with greatness in the dance world. They are a professional dance center with over 270 studios located in 22 countries around the world, and we are lucky enough to have one right here in Wilsonville!

Our location just opened in December of 2019, and the amazing teachers barely had a chance to get started before shutdowns began. Dance is nothing if not a creative industry, however,

and they’ve made the necessary accommodations to keep people dancing and safe at the same time.

They have some of the best teachers in the business, and they’re just waiting for new students.

Nate and Rachel Martin have been with Arthur Murray for almost 15 years. Although Nate admits that his interest in dance began primarily as a social thing in college, he soon found that he had a real aptitude for it. That was where he met Rachel, whose partner at that time had just graduated. She asked Nate to be her new partner and the rest, as they say, is history.

When Nate graduated, Rachel set up an interview for him to become an instructor with Arthur Murray studios. He got the position and shortly after she began instructing there as well. Together, the two of them helped raise the already high bar set by Arthur Murray, and before long their studio in Minnesota was one of the biggest in the world. Nate also became one of the company’s top 3 instructors worldwide!

After 13 years in Minnesota, where they helped several studios to reach their fullest potential, they decided it was time to move elsewhere and open their own studio. Arthur Murray is very unique in that respect, in that they allow franchise opportunities, but only for those who apply and meet the very high standards required. With their solid track record with the company, Nate and Rachel were well positioned to take advantage of the opportunity.

Rachel was from Oregon and had always wanted to return, so the duo headed out west. They opened their first location in Salem in 2014, and it

was such a success that they were able to expand and opened a second location here in Wilsonville. For any locals interested in dance, that was wonderful news! Arthur Murray instructors go through the most rigorous (and continuous) training of any instructors in the industry, which means that Nate, Rachel, their location manager Carly, and their entire staff of instructors are the best of the best! Whether you want to dance for fun, for fitness, or you find yourself wanting to pursue it seriously, they have the skills to put you on the right path.

At Arthur Murray, you can learn nearly any style of ballroom or partner dancing, even if you don’t have a partner. Styles include salsa, tango, swing, waltz, and even country western, just to name a few. They also have different programs to accommodate individual goals. If you want an introduction to the basic elements of dance so you can avoid embarrassing yourself next time you take the floor, their basic introductory program will do the trick.

For those who want to take it to the next level by moving more freely around the dance floor and expanding their technique, their Bronze Social Dance Programs are what you’re looking for. The Silver and Gold level programs are for truly ambitious dancers who want to bring their skills to a more professional level.

Whatever your dance goals are, Arthur Murray instructors can help you gain the skills you need to achieve them… and like Nate, you just might find that you are capable of more than you thought!

As of just after their opening, there are restrictions and alterations in place to abide by current safety guidelines, but they are open for classes! Group classes must be held virtually on Facebook Live, but private one-on-one and one-on-two lessons can either be held in person at the studio or online depending on your preference.

They are adhering to all of the strictest protocols (wearing masks, regularly sanitizing high-touch surfaces, practicing social distancing, etc.) for your safety and the safety of their instructors. Safety is their number one priority, and they have even invested in medical grade air filters for the entire building to provide an extra layer of protection. If you’re still not comfortable

going in, however, you can still take advantage of their virtual options.

In studying dance and training to learn the proper forms, techniques, and steps we simultaneously gain both proficiency and confidence; confidence in our abilities, and confidence in ourselves in general. There is literally no downside to learning dance.

It’s terrific exercise, it builds confidence, it provides an outlet for and encourages artistic expression, and it’s just downright fun!

A BRIEF HISTORY OF

PRESIDENTS DAY FEBRUARY 15TH, 2021

E

ach year on the third Monday of February we celebrate Presidents Day. This year the holiday falls on February 15th, but initially it was celebrated on February 22nd in honor of the birth of our first President, George Washington.

The actual date of Washington’s birthday, however, is complicated in itself. Originally, the date of his birth was actually February 11th, 1731. The reason for this was that at the time the British Empire used the Julian calendar. In 1752 they changed to the Gregorian Calendar (which we still use today) and everyone born before that year had to add 11 extra days to their date of birth. Those born between January and March also had to add an extra year, so on the new calendar Washington’s birthday was changed to February 22nd, 1732.

That day became widely celebrated from the time of Washington’s death in 1799, but didn’t become a legal or federal holiday until the late 1800’s, and wasn’t known as Presidents Day until the 1970’s.

The date of the holiday was changed in order to provide more 3-day weekends for federal workers. Before then, Washington’s birthday was celebrated as an individual holiday on that specific date, as was Lincoln’s on February 12th.

The name of the holiday, however, was never officially changed and even today is still recognized interchangeably as either Presidents Day or Washington’s Birthday.

Our modern celebration of Presidents day was a result of the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which shifted the dates of several federal holidays, including Memorial Day and Veterans Day, from their specific original date to a series of predetermined Mondays.

The law was championed by both the private sector and labor unions as a way to make holiday celebrations more consistent, reduce employee absenteeism, and boost retail sales.

Since the new holiday now falls between both of their birthdays, it is often seen as a joint celebration of both Presidents. Since holidays are not mandated as binding in all states, however, many places still honor Washington’s and Lincoln’s birthdays individually.

Moreover, the additional result of moving the holiday and unofficially changing the name to Presidents Day is that it now honors the service of all Presidents. ■ *info from history.com and almanac.com

The Portland Metro area is still in the midst of a trend where inventory of available housing is under two months.

This has been the case now for over 7 months, which is unheard of! What that means, in layman’s terms, is that there are far more people looking to buy houses than there are houses available. According to Jaimy, right now there is approximately 1 house on the Portland market for every 10 buyers! Obviously, that means it is still very much a seller’s market.

People are still getting offers well over the asking-price on their homes (provided that they listed at the appropriate price to begin with). But what does that mean for buyers? Because Team Beltran has been so proactive in adapting, it simply means that you may have to wait a little bit longer but you are still going to find your perfect home at a reasonable price and, even more importantly, at historically low interest rates!

Specifically, Jaimy, Sherine and their team have (among other things) started adjusting their clients’ offers by securing additional time to complete their transactions. A simple fix to a complex problem, but very effective! With such low inventory, it’s taking people longer to find that dream home, and since most people sell on a contingency, they need more time.

The timing worked out perfectly! Construction was completed and the client moved into their new home within a reasonable and manageable time frame.

Something else Jaimy utilizes is contingency offers for sellers. We are all familiar with buyers putting out contingency offers (purchasing a new

house on the contingency that their current house sells) but that can be used for sellers as well! A seller can put a contingency on the sale of their house, so that they will be able to purchase a new house first. It’s all a matter of utilizing whatever leverage is available to make transactions possible.
