BOTOX
Christine Lewy
By Beauty Expert Christine Lewy
I
am not a medical professional who administers Botox, but I work with them and have received Botox myself, so I am going to give you the low down in a more relatable way. Imagine me as “that friend” who’s gotten Botox, and maybe you’re over there thinking I’m crazy. The thing to understand is that most of us Botox lovers used to think that way too, but now we’ve seen the light and don’t ever want to go back. Maybe you’ve gotten Botox already and you’re hooked, or maybe you’re totally against it and want to rock the wrinkles. Either way, you go girl! But if you are where I was 3 years ago, ok with the idea of getting Botox but simply nervous and unsure, this article is for you!
What is Botox? Well to keep it simple it relaxes your muscle and in turn wrinkles are “erased”. Who needs it? Anyone starting to notice fine lines (given that you don’t want them) or those who want to prevent wrinkles from forming. Yes - Botox is both corrective AND preventative! If you start getting Botox at age 25-30 before wrinkles are really starting to set in, then in theory, you will never develop the wrinkles. All that scowling at your kids = wrinkles between your brows. All the smiling = wrinkles around your eyes. All of those surprised eyebrow raising moments = wrinkles on your forehead. Botox will fix all of these areas. If you wait too long after noticing wrinkles forming, those deep lines will never go away. We call it a static line. The moral of the story is that it’s better to start sooner rather than later. Who should not get Botox? Pregnant and breastfeeding women. Brands of Botox: Not all Botox is created equal. Botox is a term for a product like toothpaste, but Colgate is the brand name. At Divine Complexions, we use BOTOX® Cosmetic exclusively, the original Botox and the first and only to be approved by the FDA for all 3 areas. Around the eyes, between the brows, and the forehead. Others brands include Dysport,
Licensed Esthetician, Owner of Divine Complexions Spa, and West Coast Regional GloSkinBeauty Makeup Artist. Xeomin, and new kid on the block Jeuveau. What to expect: I’m going to speak to my experience with BOTOX®, and not to the other brands. In the beginning, it’s normal to be nervous and have questions. Medspas and Doctors offices will have you do a consult first before getting treatment, but whether that has to be a separate appointment or not may differ. Your provider will ask about your goals, and the Botox will be administered in units. Price is per unit and can range greatly, from $13-$21/unit. Now this is not something you should shop around for the lowest price. The skill and experience of the provider who administers it is the most important aspect in getting good Botox results. The actual injections are quick and simply feel like a little prick. After my first treatment I was so shocked. I had worked myself up thinking getting Botox was a much bigger deal than this quick straightforward appointment I experienced. Results are noticeable after 10-14 days and last about 3-4 months. You’ll want to refrain from strenuous exercise for 48 hours after treatment as it can lessen the results of Botox. I love the day Botox kicks in. I wake up and see myself in the mirror and looking refreshed and feeling better. Oh yes…the Botox kicked in! A note about the “frozen face” look: I hear so many people tell me they don’t want to look weird or their husband doesn’t want them to look different, but when Botox is done correctly, you will look just like the best version of yourself. So do your research on the best practices to visit before getting Botox. This treatment is helping men and women alike to feel their best, and we see it every day here at the spa! I know it gives me a confidence boost and I’m so glad I tried it. As always, if you have questions about Botox email me and my medical team at info@DivineComplexions.com.

SEASONAL ATTRACTION
By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer
L
et’s face it, folks, 2021 has been a scary year! In the wake of 2020, I think perhaps we were all lulled into a false sense of security, assuming 2021 could only be better. And while it hasn’t necessarily been much worse (we have seen a slowdown in COVID-related death rates, after all!), it also hasn’t been much better. So how can we combat those gloomy clouds hovering above, threatening to rain all over what remains of 2021? Well one way is to embrace a little scariness just in time for the Halloween season, and head on over to Scare Fair: Harbinger of Souls, going on at the Clackamas County Fairgrounds this October! Partnering for the second year in a row with Portland’s own Creatures of the Night, Marketing Coordinator of the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, Tyler Nizer, is proud to announce that this year you can fight COVID or seasonalrelated ennui by attending their fully immersive walk-through haunt! Last year these two organizations united to bring us the first drive-through haunt, and it was so successful that they are returning and revitalizing the event this year; and it will be bigger, badder, and better than ever! Plus now you get to walk through instead of drive for more up-close and personal scares! Creatures of the Night is an allvolunteer local organization of haunted entertainment consultants which has been in existence since 2013. They partner with local community organizations to raise funds and make entertainment to support local businesses and bring communities together. Artistic Director, David D. Jones, is incredibly enthusiastic about his work and, in particular, about bringing people together in a time when we have been so isolated. He is grateful for the partnership they’ve developed with the Clackamas County Fairgrounds, and he’s especially excited to bring the scares! According to their website: “Creatures of the Night connects 6 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2021
communities and families through a feeling of wonder and trepidation. Creatures’ highest priority is safety – of the physical surroundings and internal process – for the actors and our guests. In our method of storytelling, we believe it is the inner child that is on a journey of challenging and overcoming fears, both physical and internal. Every participant is always in control of the experience and their level of comfort.” This is where Creatures of the Night has separated themselves from the pack. Not only are they the first company to use 360 degree photography and Augmented Reality in their haunts, but they are also the first and only company in Oregon to provide customers with a customizable experience! They have incorporated an extra feature that is referred to as the Creature Candle. The candle can be adjusted by each group to align with their level of comfort, so if you like it really scary, you can turn the candle down low. If you prefer it less scary, you can turn it up brighter; the idea is that you are in control. In order to ensure that every visitor has the perfect experience for them, the candle will be available for purchase before you start your tour. This year, the theme of the tour is “Harbinger of Souls” and you will encounter several souls at the event, including: Mary (a young woman in a white dress who haunts the rivers and forests), Ole Clem (a riverboat captain), the Cultists (mysterious figures in robes), Mark Forth (a WWII deep sea diver who went missing somewhere along the Willamette and still haunts it to this day), the Pacific Northwest Lake Monster, and the Caretaker (your guide). The Willamette Valley has a long and dark history. Older fisherman have spoken of the strange and the bizarre; of robed
figures skulking about the land adjacent to the river; of large monstrosities with elongated necks piercing the water’s surface in search of food; of retrieved fishing nets full of repulsive and horrible treasures. Only a girl in a white dress holding a candle offers hope and possible sanctuary. Although it’s never been confirmed, this girl seems to guide those who are in danger or who are lost to safety. Trust her at your own peril! This event is one of remarkable, family-friendly fun and entertainment! Being customizable, the experience can be as scary or as light-hearted as you’d like for it to be, but what they will not sacrifice is anyone’s safety. That is the number one priority for both Clackamas County Fairgrounds and Creatures of the Night. That means masks are required, social distancing will be practiced, and hours will be limited, but you
can still expect tons of fun and an incredibly immersive experience! Groups will be limited to 4 (as David states, that’s not only the safest but also the best way to experience the tour) so plan accordingly. Hours of operation are FridaySaturday, 7-10pm starting October 1st and running through the end of the month. For the little ones, Haunts Junior is a more kid-friendly, Scooby-Doo type experience that will be open from 6-7pm on Saturdays. Tickets are $25 for adults and $20 for Haunt Junior and can be purchased online at: CCScareFair.com.
Buy your tickets today to escape the scariness of the real world for a little while and enjoy the Halloween experience of your life!

NOT EVEN A PANDEMIC CAN KEEP THIS OREGON ACTOR DOWN!
Crystal Loverro By David Bates, Active Media Contributing Writer
B
eing a “child of the Internet” and social media savvy, Crystal whipped into action when COVID hit and kept busy networking and creating. “I began making content with friends,” she said. “Auditions were all self-tape, so I was able to audition for jobs easily without worrying about commute time and other obstacles.” Crystal’s résumé is long and deep. A native of Binghamton, New York, she is an accomplished screen actor, voice artist and model, and she’s also comfortable behind the camera: Crystal has produced and directed, and she’s currently working on a web series called Spearheading, where she plays a character who is kidnapped for ransom but “starts running the show.” “It’s one of the funniest projects I’ve ever worked on,” she said. “We are hoping to put it through the film festival circuit this year. I’m also the lead in a feature film, Seventy One Percent. I don’t want to give too much away on that one, but we filmed it at the Oregon Coast. I’m very excited for people to see it.” It’s an artistically-rich life for a woman who initially planned a career in medicine. She graduated from Binghamton University with a degree in neuroscience and pre-health. “I’ve had a secret passion for performing my entire life,” she says. “My aunt, Darlanne Flugel, was an actress. She inspired me from a young age.” “I realized how unhappy I was and knew I needed to make a change and start pursuing my passion of being a performer.” 10 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2021
Initially drawn to dramatic work and horror, Crystal discovered she loved playing comedies. As an actor, she’s laid on the cold ground covered in fake blood, done an ATV chase on camera and even sniffed fake cocaine. “It’s something called inositol powder,” she said. “They use it in Hollywood. It stung a bit and tasted like sugar.” Crystal’s training is also extensive: She’s done scene study work, improvisation, character analysis, and acting techniques such as Meisner, Strasberg and Stanislavski. She also speaks French and can pull off an Irish (Cork) or British (Standard and Cockney) accent. When she’s not working, she enjoys Krav Maga, photography, hiking and backpacking. Along with her producing and directing credits, Crystal’s Internet Movie Database (IMDb) page lists more than a dozen films she acted in and another three that are in development where she will perform. Clearly, she keeps busy: An agent in the Pacific Northwest handles her regional work, while another in New Mexico submits globally on her behalf. “I am open to traveling anywhere for well-paid work,” she said. To learn more about Crystal and keep an eye open for Spearheading and other projects, visit crystalloverro.com. There, you can also watch demo reels where she plays an “awkward girl,” “a useless witness,” “an irritated hostage,” “a frustrated best friend” and “a nosy sister.”

he last couple of summers have been long ones. The world-wide pandemic continues on its destructive path, we all continue to struggle adapting to all of the new protocols and mandates, and we’ve had record high temperatures and drought conditions all along the west coast. So it’s nice to have things to look forward to as we ease into fall: cooler temperatures, precipitation, holidays, and of course, the fall and winter extravaganzas held by our friends at Frog Pond Farm! Justin Timm and the whole crew at the farm always go way above and beyond to ensure that everyone here in the metro area has the opportunity to enjoy a true fall farm experience. Last year, with such tight restrictions in place due to COVID, they had to significantly reduce and temper their normal celebration, but despite all that it was still a fantastic event chock-full of creative and alternative attractions. Events like the drive-thru safari ended up being hugely successful, and now that they know how resourceful and creative they can be, this year Justin is happy to announce that they are back to full swing! If last year was your first time encountering the Frog Pond Farm Experience, you really only got to see about half of what they
14 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2021
So with all that said, here are the big announcements for 2021: beginning the last Friday of September and for the entire month of October, Frog Pond Farm will be the best place in the Portland Metropolitan area to get your autumn vibes going. First and foremost, as always, they have their incredible pumpkin patch, and this year, it’s going to be inhabited by llamas! So even if you decide to only do the pumpkin patch, the kids will still get to see some animals. This is an exciting and truly unique addition to what you would normally see at most pumpkin patch attractions around town. And let’s face it, anyone can go to the local grocer and grab a pumpkin, right? But that’s not an experience! At best, it’s simply a convenience. You need a real patch, and if you’re up for the whole experience, then you need hay. You need haunted woods. You need animals and games and fun! The good news is that they have all of that here at the Farm! Besides the annual pumpkin patch, they also have their annual Spooky Farm Trail, and this year the trail is bigger and spookier than ever. First off, it’s over a half mile long and goes through the woods. There will be both live actors and animatronics dispersed throughout the trail and it will be divided into 5 different “scary zones” all designed to give you chills! It’s all family-friendly and no-contact, of course, but it will definitely be spooky! The trail is open from 5:00pm to 10:00pm, and it gets progressively scarier as the night progresses, so for older kids who really want a scare, the later
the better! Please note that it’s best to make reservations for this attraction ahead of time on their website since it can get very crowded. They will accept walk-ins, but there are no guarantees on wait times. But wait, there’s even more! While most pumpkin patches are just that: patches full of pumpkins and perhaps an animal or two or a hay ride, Frog Pond Farm is all of that plus a thousand other things. They are the Ginsu knives of fall extravaganzas! In addition to the Pumpkin Patch and the Spooky Farm Trail, they will also have a huge obstacle course loaded with inflatable obstacles, slides, and more that are both challenging and fun to navigate. They will also have carnival rides provided by another local company, PartyWorks out of Oregon City. They will have more than 20 farm games and attractions, including things like Cornhole, Tetherball, Jumbo Connect Four, Hay Towers, Hay Slides, a huge and elaborate Maze to get lost in, Mini Backhoe Diggers (which you actually get to sit in and maneuver—aka dig!), and a mining sluice where you can search for jewels and treasures! There’s also the Slingshot Challenge (you get to hit targets with tennis balls in a slingshot), Hamster Rollers (people sized culverts you can roll around in!), and many more! For all of the animal lovers out there, Justin said they will have approximately 80 animals on site! Llamas, camels, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, ponies, mini donkeys, regular-sized donkeys, emus, alpacas, guinea pigs, rabbits, chickens, ducks, and geese - it’s almost as good as the zoo!
There is plenty to do and plenty to see for all ages and all levels of interest in activity. You can simply come for the pumpkin patch, or you can purchase the deluxe/premium entry pass and receive access to everything they have to offer. Because this is a real working farm, it’s always difficult for them to make any guarantees about anything, but the best way to plan a trip is to check them out online at thefrogpondfarm.com, or find them on facebook @thefrogpondfarm to check status and buy tickets. You can purchase tickets there on site, but just be aware that it can get a little hectic sometimes. This is a family-owned local business, and they put all of this together every year simply because they love to bring the joys of fall to the entire community, and they really do it better than anyone else in the area! Justin and his family are sincerely the nicest, most generous people you’ll ever meet, and they work so hard every year to make this such a fun and special event. Look to the October skies ... If you live in the northern hemisphere, you’ll be rewarded for keeping your eyes to the skies in October, as the Draconid Meteor Shower can be seen. It contains a single comet that is visible exclusively in the northern hemisphere between October 6th and 10th. An even more impressive meteor shower that is visible in both hemispheres is the Orionid meteor shower, which runs from October 2nd until early November. It is named after Orion as it is usually visible in the same part of the sky as the constellation. At the peak of the meteor shower, as many as 20 meteors are visible every hour Reprinted courtesy of NationaldaysCalendar.com

BUILDING BUSINESS - BUILDING COMMUNITY Dear Wilsonville Community: Our Wilsonville Chamber is blessed with many volunteers who share their time and talents to help us in "building business, building community."
O
ne such terrific volunteer is Camie Calderon, WIlsonville Chamber Board Member and Treasurer. As we enter the 4th quarter, all of our local area businesses will be looking to begin year end planning. Camie and her partner Syna Pham are the owners of Classic Choice Payroll Solutions
here in WIlsonville. We checked in with Camie and asked her to share some timely tips:
Question: When do I have to start deducting from our employee’s check for Oregon Paid Family Medical Leave? Oregon PFML is now extended to 2023 so employers don’t have to worry about that for the upcoming 2022 year.
Question: Are there any other new payroll taxes effective January 1st 2022? In May 2020 Metro Supportive Housing Services Income Tax was approved as a measure to raise money for supportive housing services for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of experiencing homelessness. The Metro Supportive Housing Services Income Tax went into effect as of January 1, 2021, however employers have until January 1, 2022 to start withholding this tax. Question: Does the Metro Supportive Housing Services Income Tax affect all employers/employees? Employers with a metro location will be required to withhold this tax. The tax is a 1% personal income tax on taxable income above $125,000 for individuals and $200,000 for those filing jointly. Question: Is the Employee Retention Tax Credit still available and who qualifies? With the March 2021 passage of the American Rescue Plan Act, the ERC became available for all quarters of 2021 now extending it to the third and fourth quarters of 2021. If your business was financially impacted due to closure or other reasons pertaining to the COVID pandemic, contact and work with your CPA and payroll provider to determine eligibility and claim the credit. Question: What is the FFCRA and how does it apply to my business? We get a lot of questions around the FFCRA credit and when/how employers can get that credit back after paying their employees for leave related to COVID, getting a Vaccine, etc. This credit is claimed on the next quarterly report that the business files and your payroll provider will assist in claiming the credit on that report. THE ART SCENE
ARTIST PROFILES
SHANE ANDERSON ▶ Shane Anderson is a Minnesota based Fine Artist and Public Artist. His art is colorful, vibrant, lively, and filled with interesting details. He takes bright colors and bold forms to create works of art that invite exploration and spark conversation. Shane’s murals can be found throughout the Midwest, as well as exotic locations like Kenya, Thailand, and the Virgin Islands. Shane’s introduction into the world of professional art started with St. Paul’s huge public art installation of the Peanuts statues. From 2001-2006 he designed and created 8 large statues which gave him the confidence and experience to take the leap to becoming a muralist. In 2007, Shane started displaying and selling his personal work, and since then has become a household name in the art scene. Shane’s art has been sold to national and international collectors, as well as being commissioned worldwide for murals by large corporations, small businesses, non-profits and private collectors. ◾
HEATHER ANDREWS ▶ I have always been fascinated by the natural world, from the soil and stones on which we walk, to the creepy crawly critters that roam the earth, on up to birds which soar through invisible currents of air. Ever since I was a child I would seek out these places, finding peace in the solitude and quiet which nature has to offer. Inspired by this love for the planet, I pursued an undergraduate degree in biology and chemistry, which was shortly followed by a masters in entomology, earned from Virginia Tech. In addition to my interest in science, I’m also in love with various forms of artistic expression through visual art, as well as music. During my spare time I enjoy drawing fantastical creatures, which tend to emerge from the paper as though through their own power. Creating jewelry is yet another of my interests, and many of these items also reflect the natural world, being decorated with various flora and fauna. I have a line of jewelry made from beetle elytra, and also make jewelry from wire and beads. Playing the harp has allowed me to share my passion for music with people, and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to play for others, whether at local cafes in the Portland area, or for a party or wedding. Please feel free 24 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2021
to contact me about playing the harp for any occasion, if you are interested in certain items on my website, or if you have any pressing insect-related questions. Finally, I enjoy time spent outdoors experiencing the sights and smells of the mountains and oceans. There is something incredibly satisfying about being able to hike to the top of a mountain and gaze out at the surrounding peaks and valleys, or kayaking on a lake that’s as smooth and placid as a mirror. I find inspiration in such settings, both for my music and art, and also find these experiences to be rejuvenating, allowing me to feel whole and complete. I strongly encourage you to do the same, go out and find a beautiful, pristine place, and focus on deeply inhaling the clear air, listening to the birds and insects (or perhaps complete silence), and filling your eyes with the incredible sights. ◾

BELTRAN PROPERTIES GROUP
NEW MEMBERS, SAME COMMITMENT TO EXCELLENCE By Dennis McNabb, Active Media Contributing Writer • Photos by Kelby Maria Photography
W
hile the entire world continues to battle against the pandemic, and we’re all seeing the effects it’s having on the supply chain (less inventory, higher prices, longer wait times, etc.), some industries have been able to continue unabated. Some, like the real estate industry, have even thrived. There are multiple reasons for this: a shift in priorities (people doing things now; retiring now; buying their dream home now, versus putting those things off), low inventory of homes for sale (again, a supply chain issue), low interest rates, etc. Of course, with such a hot market, it’s more important than ever to make sure you have an agent who knows the market. Someone who has the experience and expertise,
the technology and the network connections, to put you in the best possible position when buying and selling your dream home. In short, it is more important than ever to acquaint yourself with the team at Beltran Properties at eXp Realty. I had the pleasure of speaking with Sherine Betran this month and she has some very exciting news. With all of the movement in the market this past year, they have extended and expanded their team. Here locally, they have hired 3 new members who we are pleased to be able to introduce you to. In addition, by being affiliated with eXp Realty, they have tapped into a huge network of agents across the country who can assist you with buying and selling even in other states.
30 • WILSONVILLE LIVING MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2021
Sherine and Jaimy, as a team, are unstoppable. Jaimy is the more clientfocused agent. He is the one out in the field showing houses and making your dreams come true. Sherine, on the other hand, is more agent-focused and spends most of her time consulting in the market. She does all of the hiring and training for their team but she also does a lot of work to help other aspiring agents, even agents who don’t work for them. She has 2-3 appointments set every week where she simply gets out into the local market to help launch other agents’ careers; to educate them and provide them with all of the best tools to help them succeed. And she does it because she has a passion for it! She does it for the love of the business and for the love of helping others.
As much as we talk about philanthropic work in these pages, it bears noting that Sherine donates hundreds of hours of her own time thanklessly helping her competition thrive! When people talk about “giving back,” I’m not sure anyone can say they do more than Sherine. In fact, for this article, Sherine wants to make sure the message gets out: if you are an aspiring agent, or even an existing agent who is looking to get to the next level, reach out to her! She can be found on Instagram @ Sherine_Realestatetribe or you can email her at Sherine@BeltranProperties.com. Sherine has a wealth of knowledge and expertise, not to mention she’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, so contact her today! Now let’s meet the new members of the Beltran Team! They are in no particular order. Jason Windell has been living in Oregon for 8 years now and absolutely loves it here. He’s lived in Beaverton, Sherwood, and now Newberg. Right around the same time he moved here, he decided he wanted to go in a different direction career-wise. He got his real estate license in 2014 and has been lighting the market on fire ever since! He admitted that Sherine has been trying to recruit him for a couple of years now, and he’s so happy that everything finally fell into place and he is a part of this dynamic team.
Davide Cooke has been living in the Wilsonville area for almost 6 years now and is incredibly enthusiastic to be a part of the Beltran Team! Davide has loads of experience working with clients as a previous Edge Family Fitness manager, so while he assists you in meeting all of your real estate goals, don’t be surprised if he tries to assist you in your fitness goals at the same time! He may literally just “run” you all around town to find the right home for you! I jest, of course. Davide is an extremely sharp, motivated, and genuine person who is terrific with clients. He has made thousands of connections around town working with the community during Turkey Drives, Christmas Drives, and more (all of which he organized for Edge Family Fitness himself!). He loves giving back and he loves being in a position to change lives. He used to do it through physical fitness. Now he does it through making your real estate dreams a reality! Welcome Davide!
And last, but certainly not least, is Greg Kozina. Greg is a local boy, In particular, Jason really enjoys working born and raised with first time home buyers. He loves the in Portland. unadulterated excitement and enthusiasm He left us for they typically bring to the table and he a while and loves making sure their first experience is moved down to everything they hoped for and more. Jason Colorado for a is also extremely motivated to help connect few years, but he is in the process now clients with resources to assist in the entire of moving back home! He has actually process (namely, for sellers who need items known Sherine and Jaimy since they repaired, he likes to connect people with the were all kids, and Jaimy was even the most efficient contractors to get the job done). best man in his wedding! Greg comes to the team with many years of retail management experience. He has an objective “outsider’s” perspective that also happens to be a highly customerfocused one. He hopes that this fresh and unique approach can assist the team in looking at new ways to assist clients. He is ambitious, motivated, and tenacious when it comes to getting things done. Welcome Greg! The community welcomes all 3 new members of the Beltran Team and we’re excited to see what new perspectives they will bring! These new faces mean the Beltran team has an even greater edge now, so if you’re in the market looking to buy or sell your home, there isn’t a more experienced, professional, or electrifying team in the industry.
