If you’re aiming to squeeze a few more years out of a tired roof, doing minor roof repairs will extend the life of your roof until you are ready to replace it. And believe it or not, you can do this work yourself. Here are some tips on roof maintenance and repair to get you going. Choose Your Sealant The type of roof you have will determine the sealant you use. At Long Bros. Building Supply, discover different brands, such as GacoRoof and Black Jack brand coatings. There are also several caulking products in stock that can help with small roof repair. Ask a Long Bros. associate for help in finding the right one for your home. Clean and Rinse the Roof Whether you’re experienced or not working on a roof — up high! — be sure to use a sturdy ladder and have a helper there for support. With a person holding the ladder, climb and check out the state of your roof. When making any repairs, make sure the area is clean of debris and especially moss in our wet Oregon climate. You can use a regular household broom to remove moss, but for some areas that might be a little tougher, you can use a wire bristle brush to remove the moss and then clean with a regular broom to finish up. Check for Repair Work There are several areas to check when working on household roofing repairs. The roof generally contains many metal flashing pieces. Those pieces may have come loose in the past due to weather or age. Using a roof cement

can help you to reseal those metal flashings to create a nice seal and prevent leakage. Another thing to look at are projections from the roof such as a roof vent or chimney vent. During installation, these should have had a nicely caulked seal or patch to ensure the roof doesn’t leak. Weather and age will also crack and weather the original application, and it’s easy to apply a caulking material, such as Geocell or a Black Jack roof cement to reseal those areas to prevent leaks. It’s common during wind and rain storms to have roof leaks and it’s not always the best time to have to climb up on the roof, so if you can prevent it ahead of bad weather, it will save you a roof job during a downpour. Check the Weather (and Sealant) Before you apply a roof repair product, check the instructions for temperature and weather restrictions, as some compounds require specific temperature ranges and humidity levels to properly bind to the roof materials. If the weather does not comply, put these final steps of the project on hold until the perfect day arrives. Some sealants are not picky regarding outdoor conditions. If this is the case, move on to the application process. Dry and Touch Up Once fully dried — overnight is ideal — climb the ladder for the last time to inspect your work. Inspect the dried repair thoroughly, looking for any areas missed during the initial application. Touch up these spots with the sealant until you are satisfied with the results.
