Time to Waterproof Your Deck! By Dennis McNabb
all is right around the corner and you know what that means: colder temperatures and wetter weather. For all you homeowners out there, you also know that early Autumn is the best time to start prepping for winter. In particular, it’s the perfect time to winterize your deck! You’ve just spent all summer out there, and all that wear and tear combined with the hot sun can rob
your deck of its natural resins and color, resulting in a weathered, dull finish. Additionally, it can leave the surface unprotected as we head into the rainy season, which over time can lead to rot. You can’t completely prevent all exposure to the elements, of course, but by giving it the necessary protection it needs now, you can save a lot of time and money later. Here are the basic steps:
1.
Before jumping right in, it’s important to first check your deck to see if it’s in need of waterproofing. Start by sprinkling a few drops of water onto the deck. If the water beads up, there’s no need to waterproof this year. If it soaks in, then you do need to move forward with the guidelines below. Tip: If the color is faded or gray, you may want to just refinish it with some fresh coats of stain. All stains are sealants as well, so in essence, you are doing both in one step. When staining, check the weather report to be sure you have at least 48-72 hours of expected dry weather. Also, check to make sure none of the boards are splitting, twisting, or rotting. Replace those before continuing.

The next step when waterproofing is to prepare the deck. Take everything off the deck and gently cover any adjacent ground plants with tarps or drop cloths (avoid using plastic and remove the covers as soon as the project is finished). Sweep off all loose debris and clean between the boards with a slender stick or tool. Hammer down any popped-up nails. Clean the deck with a hose or pressure washer for a good deep clean.
TIP: If using a pressure washer, be sure to use less than 1,000 psi of pressure and don’t let the nozzle get too close or it may damage the wood. Don’t forget to wear eye protection!

24 hours after cleaning, you can apply the sealant. Apply a thin even coat with a stain brush in the direction of the boards. Don’t forget corners, steps, railings and in between the cracks TIP: Wear protective clothing and try not to apply in direct sunlight.
4.
Allow it to dry for 48 hours and then replace your furniture and potted plants. Your deck is now protected and ready to head into winter!
