Rivershore Bar & Grill is the ideal location for everything from a casual lunch with friends, to an important business meeting with clients, to a date night with your special someone! Celebrating the end of the Oregon Trail with gorgeous views overlooking the Willamette River, it’s a place you don’t want to leave once the meal is over. During the summer in particular, with outdoor seating available on their ever-popular deck, it’s difficult to imagine a more inviting or tranquil setting. Whether it’s the views or the amazing food that initially draws people in though, it’s the consistently excellent quality and service across breakfast, lunch, and dinner which keeps them coming back.

Wednesdays is Chef’s Choice, and on Fridays and Saturdays is a Prime Rib with Dungeness Crab Legs or Lobster Tails), their Beer Battered Fish & Chips (their own housemade batter with either Halibut or Cod), their classic Clam Chowder, their signature Rivershore burger, and their famous Steamer Clams which come in a unique white wine cream sauce! Everything is delicious, though, and there is a wide variety to choose from. Everyone can find something to enjoy here.

Happy Hour is very popular and offered every day from 2 to 6 pm and Sundays ALL DAY. Favorites on their Happy Hour menu include their Potato Skins served with sour cream, Spinach and Artichoke Dip served with pita bread and tortilla chips, their Grilled Chicken Caesar Salads, and their ⅓ lb Cheeseburger served with housemade chips. General Manager Hayley O’Brien began her career at Rivershore 16 years ago bussing tables and has literally worked from the bottom to the top. It just goes to show, from humble beginnings with the right attitude and work ethic, great things can come. Hayley is intelligent, warm, and friendly, and incredibly passionate about her staff and the restaurant. Many of the people she has working for her have been there as long as she has, and some even longer. She sincerely considers them family, and Rivershore Bar & Grill is the consequence of that combined effort over years of hard work and dedication.

Their sourdough bread, which is free with any entrée and delivered in a basket to your table, comes from Portland French Bakery. Coffee beans come from Happyrock Coffee Roasting Company

in Gladstone, and many of their wines— they have an extensive selection—come from Oregon. They have pinots from Willamette Valley Vineyards and Battle Creek Cellars (out of Dundee) which people have been raving about.

Brian Haines, owner of Canby Music, began his business in 2008 on “kind of on a whim,” he relates. All through his 20s he had traveled on the road playing guitar in different bands. He enjoyed local success performing at fairs, rodeos, and casinos, and often performed weeklong gigs within the Western United States. On

his final road trip Brian had been gone 6 months, returning home at 29 years old. “This has all been fun and dandy,” he remembers thinking, but he also entertained the idea of settling down and having a family. Wanting to stay in music without traveling, Brian decided that “a music store would be the way to go.” He opened Canby Music in downtown Canby, and due to multiple requests he began teaching lessons as a service to the community. Along the way, band instrument rentals and repairs were also added.

After 10 years of growing business, Canby Music bought the “blue house” property in 2018 and began renovating. Completing much of the work himself, Brian opened the new location in September 2020, which includes: 4 lessons rooms staffed by instructors who teach multiple instruments, an instrument repair shop, band rentals, a high-end retail shop, and climate control throughout. In addition to more space, Brian expresses, “It’s nice and new, everything works.”

Canby Music hand-picks their staff of highly-qualified individuals. Nathan Doty, Repair Technician, started with Canby Music at the downtown location. Nathan is the school liaison, in charge of instrument repairs for all the local schools.

Christian Engerman, Studio Manager, teaches lessons and is responsible for lesson scheduling and billing. Lana Szenasi was “perfect” with her background in band and was assigned to school band rentals. Lana also teaches lessons and repairs instruments in the rental fleet. Ryleigh Mulhern, a school senior, came in with family and thought it would be “neat” to work in a music store. She sat and played their piano, the staff was impressed, and thought she’d be a good fit for the store. She teaches lessons and is their graphic designer. Cody McEldowney heads up Drums and School Percussion. He’s also in charge of the retail business, receiving and displaying products, and ringing up sales.

Brian continues teaching 20 or so individuals who’ve “been coming for years,” he says, “but mostly steers the ship

these days.” Living in Canby with his wife and 2 school-age children, both in Canby School District, Brian Haines knows what it means to be a local independent business owner and active community member. Brian, who’s originally from Canby, came up with the concept of Canby Music, and he states candidly, “This is as Canby as it gets.” He donates instruments and lessons to school auctions and equestrian events (showing support for his daughter who rides). He shops generously at the fireworks booth at Canby Music Boosters Club,

which raises money for high school and middle school bands. He is also a member of Canby Chamber of Commerce.

Wedding Singer

One of my alltime favorite Adam Sandler movies, this is absolutely drenched in ’80s pop culture–movies, cars, fashion, and music. The story follows a talented, funny, and likable wedding singer (Sandler) living in his brother’s basement and who’s terribly in love with the wrong girl. His heart gets broken (of course) and he plunges into a deep pit of despair but refuses to quit working–singing for couples in love–to much expected comedy. Eventually he meets his dream girl (a very cute Drew Barrymore) who’s in love with the wrong guy. Hilarity, flirting, and crossed signals abound, it also stars Alexis Arquette, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, and more, plus a cameo by Billy Idol. It’s bright and cute and wacky. Rated a strong PG-13 for language and mature content, save this for the older kiddos.

Trolls

Eternal Sunshine Of The MindSpotless

With pure blissful technicolor and heartthumping pop music by Justin Timberlake, the Trolls movie skywrites in bombastic sparkly letters the message of love, joy, happiness, and positivity. A classic Us vs. Them, the meanie ogre Bergens threaten to capture the Trolls once for all–to eat the Trolls one-by-one and finally feel happy. Surely, there’s a better way to find happiness! And through conflict, trial-and-error, and lesson-learning, the Trolls teach the Bergens how to be happy WITHOUT eating others. On a smaller scale, there’s a classic love story: the untrusting hermit, Branch (Justin Timberlake), meets the happy-go-lucky girl-next-door, Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick). Their relationship very much parallels the Bergens vs. Trolls in their quest to conquer grumpiness and trust. And shocker, they fall in love. There’s singing, dancing, love, good feelings, and colors you’ve never seen before! Rated PG for mild rude humor and the threat of being eaten (I did tell you). Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

This mindblowingly original sci-fi drama romance came barreling out of the early 2000s with an Academy Award for Best Writing and a slew of other awards. One of Jim Carrey’s earlier dramatic roles, his and Kate Winslet’s characters have a bad breakup and opt to have their relationship erased from memory by an experimental doctor, played by Tom Wilkinson. Also starring Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood. It’s surreal, quirky, indie, funny, sad, and far too relatable. As chaotic as it is, it’s utterly human with a heartwarming ending. Rated R for language, drug and mature content

Mattress stores seem to be a dime a dozen, with locations on virtually every street corner and dozens of online options as well. And you’d think the buying experience would be the same as the next, right? Wrong. For starters, there’s the personability. Sean has been in the business for over 25 years. He started the parent company Furniture Showcase, Inc. in 1995, and has been serving the community as Mattress World Northwest (MWNW) since 2004. He and his team are dedicated to making your mattress buying experience one of a kind. In talking to Sean, it’s obvious he cares deeply about his employees and his customers.

Feeling Is Believing.

Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake

INGREDIENTS

2 cups all-purpose flour

1/3 cup white sugar

¼ cup cocoa powder

1 tablespoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

½ teaspoon salt

½ cup butter

1 cup milk

2 pints strawberries, sliced

¼ cup white sugar

1 (12 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

2 tablespoons chocolate syrup

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C). Grease two 9-inch layer pans.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, 1/3 cup sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Add milk, mixing until just moistened. Spread batter evenly into the prepared layer pans.

3. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool.

4. Meanwhile, in a medium mixing bowl, combine strawberries and remaining 1/4 cup sugar. Let mixture stand for 10 minutes.

5. Remove shortcake layers from the pans. Place one layer on a serving plate; cover with 1/2 of the of strawberry mixture and 1/2 of the whipped topping. Place remaining shortcake layer on top, then remaining strawberry mixture and remaining whipped topping. Drizzle chocolate syrup over top.

You’re never too old or too young to look and feel your best!

That’s the running joke in the office.
