Allison’s brother, Sean, is also integral in their operations, and her son has been working part-time this summer. This truly is a family affair and a legacy to be proud of!

TASTE OF THE TOWN

By Dennis McNabb, Contributing Writer Photos by Carly Carpenter and Patricia Kenney in 2008. Jerry had been with Papa Murphy’s for almost 20 years at the corporate level, when he was looking to slow down and move towards semi-retirement. He stepped down as Senior Vice President of Operations to become a franchisee, purchasing 4 locations in that first year alone (and 2 more since). It makes you wonder what he would have done if he wasn’t “slowing down”! At that same time, their daughter, Allison, decided to change careers and join the family business. The stars were aligning, and when she discovered they were building a family legacy, she wanted to be included. She now co-owns all 6 locations with her folks.

T ake ‘N’ Bake pizza is really the best of both worlds, isn’t it? All of the benefits—fresh dough made from scratch every day, fresh-cut vegetables, 100% mozzarella cheese dailyshredded from blocks—and a piping hot pizza in the comfort of your own home without any of the detriments. Eating at a pizza parlor can be noisy and uncomfortable. Getting it delivered, the crust is often rubbery and lukewarm. Buying it frozen isn’t even in the same ballpark. Take ‘N’ Bake is the only way to go when it comes to great pizza, and Papa Murphy’s is the preeminent purveyor. It all began back in 1994 with the merger of BakeTakesuccessfulhighlytwo‘N’

chains: Papa Aldo’s, founded right here in Hillsboro, Oregon in 1981, and Murphy’s, founded in Petaluma, California in 1984. Together they formed Papa Murphy’s and have since gone on to win numerous accolades and become the largest Take ‘N’ Bake pizza brand in the country. Their core mission is simple: Take the hard work out of mealtime so you can focus on more important things like family and friends. It’s easy to understand why this has proven to be such a winning formula. The Tualatin location has been here since 1999 and was initially corporately-owned. That all changed, however, when it was purchased by local couple Jerry Call 503.825.2111

Don’t be fooled into thinking that just because Papa Murphy’s is a nationwide chain that they are all corporate-owned. Many franchisees are small “mom and pop” teams, local citizens who live in and care passionately for their communities. Allison and her family are incredibly generous and dedicated members of the community. They donate a lot of time, effort, and money toward supporting all of the communities they serve. They work constantly and very closely with Our Giving Table, local schools, and local sport clubs to help raise funds. This is the key difference between a corporateowned chain restaurant and a locallyowned “mom and pop” restaurant like Tualatin Papa Murphy’s; the Kenneys live in, work in, and support their local community!

ilsonville’s Concert School of Music opens in a new location! As of August 1st, the Concert School of Music will be operating from a new and much larger facility just off Boones Ferry Road and SW Pioneer Court in Wilsonville. With more than double the space of their previous spot in Wilsonville Town Center, Concert School of Music is able to offer the Wilsonville community so much more. More classes, more programs, and more interaction with the community!

Concert School of Music’s newly adopted slogan, “Music for Everyone,” encompasses the wide range of infants through adults of all ages, regardless of musical interest, background, training, or skill level. Classes the school is particularly proud to offer are Mini Mozarts (earlychildhood music education) and Concert Kids (children ages 4-6). More adult group classes such as ukulele and guitar are also offered, and XLR, the rock band program, is being expanded. The Chamber Music program is resuming—now with ample room. Theory Thursdays is a class whereby kids learn music theory and gain understanding of how to play their instruments better. “Our big one,” says Lori, “is The Young Composers Society.” Kids Call 503.825.2111

CONCERT SCHOOL OF MUSIC MUSIC EVERYONEFOR

“We are so excited to begin this new phase,” says Lori Givens, founder and co-owner of the business. After occupying the Town Center venue for the past 29 years, fate forced its hand and Concert School of Music had no choice but to move on, and in this case—move upward. Vacating the Town Center space in May, Concert School of Music has held virtual classes while undergoing construction at the new location. With its opening in August, the new space allows Concert School of Music larger lesson rooms and the ability to add more classes. The Recital Hall, for instance, will host a number of group classes and also serve as a rehearsal space.

Always looking for feedback, Lori at Concert School of Music asks, “What does everyone else want that maybe we’re not thinking of?” They’d like to add those suggestions as a resource for the community and truly provide “music for everyone.” Concert School of Music is located at 9510 SW Pioneer Ct. in Wilsonville. their boys share this very special connection. The Givens try to give back as much as they can to the Portland Youth Philharmonic.

“It’s one of those organizations that really changes your life, and we just want to be part of that music community,” Lori professes.

The Quartet Violin Shop is also an integral facet of the Concert School of Music, but maintains its own identity. The new location affords the shop a designated entry apart from the Concert School of Music, and includes a workshop and luthier. Offering an affordable rental program and full-service amenities, the shop provides accessories and repairs, and assures that all instruments leaving through its doors are “good instruments, set up correctly, and capable of producing a positive learning experience,” says Lori. String instruments are also available for purchase, and whether brand new, or tried and true, string instruments only increase in value, so your purchase is truly an investment. Re-branded in 2017, Music Man Studio became Concert School of Music because “we kind of accidently started the violin shop,” Lori relates. Trying to supply instruments for the community, because “there weren’t really other options available,” imparted an additional focus within the business. This aspect of the business continued to grow, resulting in the need for a complete and independent violin shop. Living and working locally, the Givens feel the importance of giving back to the community. They participate in outreach programs and are extremely excited by their new location because the Recital Hall will provide the needed space to give free concerts. These concerts will have a focus toward children, as many have little or no knowledge of the various instruments and rarely have the opportunity to experience live music.

Straight out of college, with a music degree from the prestigious Indiana University (Jacobs) School of Music, Lori went to work for Music Man Studio in Wilsonville. A couple years down the road, Music Man put the business up for sale and Lori bought it. It was 1999 and Lori was in her early 20s and on her own. “I just always wanted to mix music and business,” she explains. “I come from an entrepreneurial family and this just felt right.” A few years later she hired Nathan, they went on to marry, “and the rest is history,” she chuckles. Nathan took on co-ownership, he teaches violin and viola, conducts the orchestra, and is trained in 3 different states as a luthier.

At Concert School of Music, families can come and enjoy a free live music performance. With the younger children in mind, instruments will be performed solo then played together to hear how they sound individually and in unison.

The Alzheimer’s Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, forges partnerships with the shared commitment to end Alzheimer’s and other dementia, including Alzheimer’s organizations around the globe, the National Institutes of Health, National Institute on Aging, universities, corporations and the pharmaceutical, biotech and device industries. With their broad partnerships, they are committed to transparency.

Alzheimer’s is not a normal part of aging. The greatest known risk factor is increasing age, and the majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. Alzheimer’s is a progressive disease, where dementia symptoms gradually worsen over a number of years. In its early stages, memory loss is mild, but with late-stage Alzheimer’s, individuals lose the ability to carry on a conversation and respond to their environment. On average, a person with Alzheimer’s lives 4 to 8 years after diagnosis but can live as long as 20 years, depending on other factors.

The Alzheimer’s Association of Oregon and SW Washington is located at 1650 NW Naito Pkwy in Portland. They can be reached at 1-800-272-3900 or alz.org/orswwa.

What is Alzheimer’s? Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia that affects memory, thinking and behavior. Symptoms eventually grow severe enough to interfere with daily tasks. Alzheimer’s is the most common cause of dementia, a general term for memory loss and other cognitive abilities serious enough to interfere with daily life. Alzheimer’s disease accounts for 6080% of dementia cases.

Alzheimer’s has no cure, but one treatment — aducanumab (Aduhelm™) — is the first therapy to demonstrate that removing amyloid (one of the hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease) from the brain, which is reasonably likely to reduce cognitive and functional decline in people living with early Alzheimer’s. Other treatments can temporarily slow the worsening of dementia symptoms and improve quality of life for those with Alzheimer’s and their caregivers. Today, there is a worldwide effort underway to find better ways to treat the disease, delay its onset and prevent it from developing.

Agreeing to stay on a couple more months at one day a week, Nancy was soon asked if she’d consider working two days a week. She split the difference and ended up with a day and a half which continued for the next 10 months. On a lighthearted note, Nancy recounts a similar story of taking on the job in the first place. She remembers saying she’d work for 6 months, maybe a year, and then see how it goes. Well obviously it went quite well, evidenced by her 13 years of service and first unsuccessful retirement attempt.

Thank you for your great work, Nancy!

Nancy Reynholds Retires After 13 Years With Active Media By Patti

Looking back fondly, Nancy relates that she came to Active Media through Catrina Nelson, whom she met at their children’s Tualatin Elementary School. Nancy was heading up a fundraiser and Catrina volunteered to co-chair. They became well-acquainted and even shared a love for singing. Nancy sang in a community choir that frequently performed at nursing homes and described it as, “something so fulfilling to do.” Later, Catrina joined the choir and the women became “super great friends.” When Catrina’s husband Matt, president and publisher of Active Media, was looking for an assistant, of course Nancy came to mind. Starting in Accounts Receivable and as an assistant to Matt, Nancy was soon recognized for the great value of her organizational skills. She moved on to become Catrina’s assistant in accounting, subsequently learned billing, and then advanced to BillingHoldingManager.afront row seat at Active Media for over 13 years, Nancy has witnessed a lot of growth and numerous changes within the company. PreCOVID, there were many occasions for the staff and sales team to get together and socialize at “proofing parties,” whereby lunch of some sort (and always delicious) was provided. As for working with the sales reps and staff over the years, Nancy “really enjoyed all of them.” She loved building rapport with customers, and found Matt and Catrina “great friends and wonderful people to workNancywith.”loves the outdoors. She loves catamarans and boating, and her retirement plans include traveling with her husband and “maybe some volunteer work.” Also, “I would love to work in a winery,” she confides. “I think that would be the most fun thing to do!”

Nancy Reynholds retired from Active Media after 13 years of fun and rewarding on-the-job experiences. She’s handed in her keys and the vacation’s all set, so this time her retirement’s for real. She hadn’t planned on continuing her 3 day a week job past the summer of 2021, but Matt and Catrina Nelson, who own Active Media, just weren’t ready to part with her yet.

S hould you find yourself surrounded with individuals decked out in dirndl and lederhosen, be assured that you haven’t been magically transported to Germany. In all likelihood, you’re enjoying the Oktoberfest celebration in Mount Angel, Oregon. You may already be familiar with the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, but did you know it is the largest festival of its kind in the entire Pacific Northwest, and that despite October being featured in its name, the event is actually celebrated in September? When considering the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, and its perennial success as a major Germanic folk festival, the first question one might ask is, “How did this festival start to begin with?” and “Why Mount Angel, Oregon, of all places?”

HISTORY

The answer to these questions takes us back to the late 19th century when Reverend Father Adelhelm Odermatt migrated to Oregon in 1881, with a contingent of Benedictine monks from Engelberg, Switzerland for the purpose of establishing a chapter in the United States. After visiting several locations, Lone Butte (situated at the present day town of Mount Angel) was chosen as the site of the new chapel. During this period the area also experienced a major influx of immigrants from Bavaria. Due to the efforts of Odermatt—which included the establishment of an Abbey and Benedictine monastery—the town that sprung up here was named Mount Angel (the English translation of Engelberg), honoring the Swiss origins of Odermatt and the monks.

It wasn’t until 1966, however, that the first Oktoberfest was held in Mount Angel. The inaugural celebration was the brainchild of nine local businessmen (many of Germanic heritage) who were looking to start a new town festival. It was noted that Mount Angel’s churches and buildings had a German feel to them. With $100 borrowed from the Mount Angel Chamber of Commerce— which was spent to purchase beer for the festival—the town’s first Oktoberfest commenced in the center of town at the intersection of Palm and Main Street, and included some quirky events such as a group sing-along at the bandstand and an auto race. One of the biggest improvements over the years has been in the quality of the beer. In the early days of Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest, only a single beer was served, and it was typically either Blitz or Olympia—whichever offered a better deal at the time. These early years (in terms of the beer) were focused more on quantity and not so much on quality.

As a cultural festival the Oktoberfest is embraced by the entire town. The majority of Mount Angel’s residents will dress in traditional attire for the four days of the festival, with children and teenagers firstwheremusicandplaythethetraditionalperformingdancesinstreetsdaily.InbeertentsrevelersthesamesongsdancetothesameasinMunich,Oktoberfestoriginated, and which remains the largest festival of its type to this day. And although there are certain differences between the Oktoberfest in Munich and the Mount Angel Oktoberfest—such as the drinking of beer from red plastic cups instead of traditional glass steins, and the absence of classic food favorites like pork knuckles and grilled chicken—the Bavarian spirit of the event remainsAlongauthentic.withthebeer and sauerkraut (which are traditional Oktoberfest fare), and traditional activities such as singing, dancing, and parades, the festival also features an Oktoberfest Olympics which hosts new events and competitions. For example, proving your “German-ness” by holding a beer stein aloft as long as possible, hammering a nail into a tree faster than other competitors, speed-sausage eating, rolling and stacking beer kegs, and of course, yodeling. Monica Bochsler, the festival’s director of marketing and public relations maintains, “We just feel like the winner should be able to yodel.”

As for the longevity of the Mount Angel Oktoberfest, Bochsler believes tradition is the driving force behind their success. “We’ve survived because there is an extremely strong streak of tradition,” she insists. “You’ll still find tons of people wearing lederhosen, dancing traditional German routines.” For 2022, the Mount Angel Oktoberfest runs from September 15th through 18th. It may not match Munich’s Oktoberfest in scope and size, but you’ll probably have just as good of a time, and you havewon’ttofly to Germany to get there. yodeling!practicerememberJusttoyour

Although Mount Angel’s Oktoberfest has grown over the years, a strong commitment to the local community has remained a driving force for the festival. Throughout its lifetime, the festival has donated over $3 million to schools, churches, and other non-profit service organizations in the region. Not to mention the revenue earned from the food booths of various non-profit organizations at the festival, which for many of them represent their single largest source of income for the year.

In addition to the Mount Angel Oktoberfest being community-oriented, it is also a family-friendly atmosphere. Each year a festival Kindergarten is provided free of charge for children, which includes rides, live performances, bouncy houses, and a petting zoo.

With the rise of the craft brewing movement over the past decade, festivalgoers have sought quality rather than quantity, and in response, the organizers of the event have answered with a “microgarten” that features various local craft breweries. Today, the Mount Angel Oktoberfest offers a wide array of beer and ale choices, including traditional German brands such as Spaten, Andechs, and Weihenstephaner, to Oregon craft brews from Widmer, Boneyard, pFriem, and more. Even domestic staples such as Coors and Budweiser are available, as well as a variety of hard ciders.
