TASTE OF THE TOWN
Pizza Schmizza By Brad Neuhoff, Contributing Writer • Photos by Carly Carpenter
“H
umbling, accommodating, and a true blessing.” That’s how Claude and Hannah DaCorsi describe the welcome they’ve had since taking ownership of Pizza Schmizza in the Argyle Square Shopping Center. It’s now called Schmizza Pub & Grub, and it’s a place full of fun and laughter. Leading the laughs is Claude himself. “To know me is to laugh,” he says. “I love what I do, and I am right there making the dough, serving the customers. I want people to leave giggling because everyone needs a giggle.” At Schmizza there is plenty to smile about with a huge variety of pizzas on the menu, from the classic and simple to the gourmet and unexpected. A popular choice is the Genoa, topped with genoa salami, pepperoni, crumbled italian sausage, mushrooms & black olives. If you like your pizza with a pop culture reference, try the Popeye & Olive Oil, which comes with fresh spinach and roma tomatoes on

a bed of creamy alfredo sauce with garlic & feta cheese. Or if you want something really different, something unlike any pizza you’ve ever had before, go for the Rustic Pie. With its toppings of baby red potatoes, roma tomatoes, garlic, broccoli & a sprinkle of feta cheese, it’s perhaps the most unusual choice on the menu, and a surprisingly delicious one! They usually have a selection of 8 house pizzas prepared daily that you can order a slice or two of, but if none of the house pizzas strike your fancy, you can always build your own! The best part, according to Claude, is what he describes as their “breadstick of crust,” filled with melting butter and parmesan. “We make our dough every day,” he says. “It’s about as fresh you can get; it’s key with our pizza. You can taste that freshness.” Pizza reigns supreme at Schmizza, obviously, but if that just isn’t your thing, don’t worry! They also have an awesome selection of sandwiches, salads, and pasta to choose from. The Frikin’ Chicken Pasta is always a great choice, with grilled chicken, oven-roasted broccoli, and penne pasta all mixed with a basil pesto cream sauce. Claude says, “If I could eat the Frikin’ Chicken Pasta every day I would, but that’s too many carbs!”
Then there is the Cajunator, which is definitely a good option for the more adventurous eater. It’s grilled chicken or spicy Italian sausage tossed in a spicy Cajun chipotle cream sauce, with penne pasta and parmesan cheese. It’s certainly unusual for a pasta dish, but surprisingly popular. “The regulars come in for it day after day,” says Claude. They also come for the salad and sandwich specials, like the fanfavorite BLT Avocado salad. Other options you’ll find include a “specialty of the month” pizza, various daily specialties, and the perfect lunchtime meal deal: for only $5 you can grab some pizza and a drink, and be in and out in 5 minutes. Schmizza also offers an impressive assortment of drinks to select from, plus a daily happy hour from 3-5pm. “We have
expanded our beers and wines,” Claude says. “We have 22oz. bottles and 16oz. cans of top crafted beer and cider and over 40 choices, plus 6 on draft, and you can take those bottles to go.” The pandemic has been a rough time for local businesses and restaurants, but thankfully for the DaCorsi’s, pizza is a pretty good business to be in right now. With take out and delivery skyrocketing in popularity, it almost seems like the pizza industry may have simply been ahead of the game all these years. Schmizza Pub & Grub is located near Lenza Eye Center in the Argyle Square Shopping Center, at 8695 SW Jack Burns Blvd in Wilsonville. Visit schmizza.com to see the menu or get more information, then place your order online or call them at 503-582-8210.

Candy Hearts:
A History Of A Sweet Treat
By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
N
ecco wafers, candy hearts, Sweethearts, conversation hearts. The candy goes by many names, with silly messages and a chalky consistency. The notorious candy hearts have a strange history that involves a pharmacy and America’s first candy machine. Our story begins in 1847, with a pharmacist named Oliver Chase, who invented a machine to produce lozenges. Back then, apothecary lozenges were popular for sore throats and other illnesses. But 175 years ago, the process to make a lozenge was labor-intensive: pulverizing medicine and sugar paste by hand with a mortar and pestle, kneading dough, then rolling and cutting out little discs. Considered the first candy machine, Oliver invented a lozenge cutter to simplify the process, and smartly shifted from making medicine to making candy, founding Chase and Company, which later became New England Confectionery Company, or Necco! Here’s where the story gets really interesting! Legend tells us that Union soldiers during the Civil War carried Necco wafers, known as “hub wafers,” and Oliver Chase might have been inspired by the love letters
these soldiers carried. Historians suggest instead that Daniel Chase, Oliver’s brother, was inspired by the growing popularity of Esther Howland’s Valentine Day cards which began selling in the mid-1800s. A third and more likely explanation is the oddly named cockle, a popular candy shaped like a scallop seashell which contained a “motto” printed on a thin roll of paper. Daniel cleverly improved upon this design to print the messages directly onto candy, by using a felt roller pad wetted with red vegetable coloring. However, Daniel’s “conversation candies” or “motto lozenges” weren’t heart-shaped until later in 1902. Up until that time, their candy was sold in a simple disc shape, but eventually were sold in shapes like baseballs, watches, and horseshoes. The candy hearts were hugely successful, and over the next 100 years other smaller companies began selling similar candies. In 1990, Necco acquired Stark Candy Company and became the “leading manufacturer in conversation hearts.” Today, the company claims to manufacture nearly 100,000 pounds of Sweethearts every day from midFebruary through January and approximately 8 billion candy hearts each year. But what is a candy heart exactly? Necco offers classic Sweethearts, as well as chocolate, sugar-free, “dazzled,” and “color your own” varieties. According to their website: “Manufacturers combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, f lavors, gums and colors into a mixing machine to create a dough, which then goes into a machine that presses it flat, stamps it with sayings and cuts it into hearts. After 30 minutes in a “drying tunnel,” the six different heart flavors are mixed together and packaged.” Surprisingly, they’re not made out of chalk! Daniel Chase’s original printed lozenges were larger and therefore included longer phrases, like “HOW LONG SHALL I HAVE TO WAIT? PLEASE BE CONSIDERATE.” There were also weddingthemed sayings, such as “MARRIED IN WHITE, YOU HAVE CHOSEN RIGHT.” Previous sayings like the timeless “FAX ME” and “GROOVY” have been discontinued. “BE MINE” and “KISS ME” you may be more familiar with. Whatever your feelings on candy hearts, they’re a fun and fascinating little piece of American history.

FIVE OAKS MUSEUM
Community-Voiced History & Culture By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
A
museum is a refined curation of art, culture, and history, which has been historically curated by people removed, not unlike how history has been documented by the prevailing nation until recently. I had the pleasure of speaking with Molly Alloy, Co-Director at Five Oaks Museum in Portland, and they detailed how exactly Five Oaks Museum has turned this traditional museum ideology on its head in favor of something far more inclusive and new. Interestingly, Five Oaks progressivism is relatively new. It was first founded in 1956 as the Washington County Historical Society, a history museum which showcased settler artifacts. Molly said the museum had thrived for many years and “evolved in the early 80s under a great executive director who oversaw the shift to become an independent non-profit.” Eventually the museum declined due to leadership changes, financial instability, and antiquated exhibits which were stuck in the 20th century. In 2019, Molly Alloy and Nathaniel Andreini became co-directors and were the only full-time staff. They had a rebellious new vision for the museum, which was a collaborative approach that mashed up the genres of art, culture, history, and storytelling, with a deep focus on inclusivity and allowing the community to generate and participate in content. 6 months after adopting the co-director model, the former Washington Historical Society underwent a complete rebrand and restyling. “It was a sort of coming out,” Molly said, “with a deep fundamental reorientation of values and focus.” The shiny and new Five Oaks Museum opened in January 2020, only to close to the public 9 weeks later with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. But Molly and Nathaniel were determined to remain available to the community, “setting closure aside to be open online.” Since then and throughout 2 years of pandemic, their exhibitions have exclusively been online and received widespread praise from the community. What’s really innovative about Five Oaks is their desire to “bring cultural content into relevant communities,” Molly said, as well as impact society as a whole with their exhibitions. Their current feature exhibition is #StandUpFG: Latinx Youth Activism in the Willamette Valley. The student activism in 2016 that this exhibition features helped to inspire the statewide ballot measure in Oregon, which in turn had a
12

national impact on ethnic studies. This exhibition hopes to add to the record the ways the student activism played a role in that movement, Molly explained. According to the Five Oaks website, “This exhibition uses narrative, contemporary artworks, testimonials, and other forms of creative expression [such as tweets, paintings, and songs] to tell the story of #StandUpFG, its connection to the past, and how Latinx youth activism continues to shape our collective futures.” Five Oaks Museum 2021 Guest Curator Israel Pastrana created this exhibition with student activists. Not only is Five Oaks a proponent of activism, it’s a valuable resource by and for the community. Their learning and research resources are there to support individuals, local government, and educators (including parents), and allow them to utilize content created in exhibitions as a sort of living knowledge, changing and growing with each experience in a public audience. This includes purchasable lawn signs they call Museum At (Our Place), whose QR codes link to online exhibitions, allowing participants to bring the museum’s content right into their communities. This project approaches research and knowledge as a form of interactive storytelling with a mindfulness for inclusivity. Five Oaks Museum is a brilliant addition to the community. With their focus on body, land, truth, justice, and community, they’re taking a bold and responsible approach to what they do: telling local human stories. Five Oaks Museum is located on the homelands of the Tualatin Kalapuya, at PCC Rock Creek Campus, 17677 NW Springville Rd in Portland. Check out their website at www. fiveoaksmuseum.org, or their Instagram @fiveoaksmuseum for updates and IG takeovers.

SEASONAL
MUSHY MOVIES By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer
Pride and Prejudice (2005) - PG
50 First Dates (2004) - PG-13
Based on Jane Austen’s romantic novel published in 1813, there are many film versions of P&P but this is the best one, in my honest opinion, and I’ve seen a lot of them! This is a romance drama starring the electric Kiera Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, alongside such brilliant actors as Donald Sutherland and Judi Dench, and many other familiar English faces. What stands out most is the quick wit and ratatat dialog, not just between men and women, but among everyone in high Victorian society in the English countryside. This is a movie of side glances and subtext, wry smiles and melodrama. What really ties this together is a masterly, whimsical score by Dario Marianelli that’s guaranteed to make your heart swell.
Adam Sandler has starred in a curious number of romantic comedies which are surprisingly good, and this is no exception. This movie co-stars the lovely and hilarious Drew Barrymore, who has a rare condition of anterograde (short term) amnesia following a car accident. The comedy and yearning ensue when Henry (Sandler) and Lucy (Barrymore) fall in love over and over, and Henry’s attempts become i ncreasi ng ly more involved and sentimental in an attempt to cause her to remember him. Also starring Rob Schneider, Sean Astin, Blake Clark, and Dan Aykroyd, this movie is as sweet and sappy as it is hilarious and downright absurd.
10 Things I Hate About You (1999) - PG-13
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018) - PG-13
A wry adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy The Taming of the Shrew, this film follows a sprawling 90s cast with the likes of beau-hunk Heath Ledger, starlet Julia Stiles, and quick-witted Joseph-Gordon Levitt. The plot, if you’ve never read the play, is a convoluted tangle that is best explained as a series of romantic bets on unlikely love, not dissimilar to a number of plates spinning simultaneously as the audience holds its breath and fights back laughter. But especially, the film involves Heath Ledger trying to “tame the shrew,” or stubborn woman, Julia Stiles. It’s teenage love, rebellion against parents’ wishes, and high school drama, which makes for a fascinating and impossible potpourri of comedy, romance, and drama. And the 90s music ain’t half bad either.
In this teen romantic comedy, shy high school junior Lara Jean has her unsent love letters unknowingly sent out to her crushes by her younger sister. What follows is as equally nerve-wracking as it is adorable and sweet, as she begins down a complex journey of conf licted feelings and love and heartbreak. T h is roma nt ic comedy is startlingly modern, full of sleek text chat bubbles and Gen Z slang, and an incredible insight into what young love looks like in the 21st century. Starring Lana Condor, Noah Centineo, and Janel Parrish, this movie spawned two sequels and a cult-like following.

HISTORY
By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
F
or many of us, the name Tillamook instantly evokes thoughts of dairy products, most notably, cheddar cheese. Generations of Oregonians have toured the iconic Tillamook Cheese Factory on the Oregon coast, marveling at the state-of-the-art facilities and enjoying the delectable cheese-themed entrees and ice cream at their on-site restaurant. Tillamook and cheese have become virtually synonymous, which leads one to wonder how it all came about. Cheese in Tillamook? What’s the story? The story begins in the mid-nineteenth century as settlers crossed the Great Plains to the Pacific Northwest along the Oregon Trail. While the Willamette Valley was the primary destination in Oregon for many of these early settlers, later arrivals discovered that much of the desirable land in the Valley had already been claimed. Turning their attention west, some of these pioneers crossed over the Coast Range to take up residence in the Tillamook Bay area. Although the coastal region posed certain challenges—namely, dense forest and abundant precipitation—it was the ideal climate to grow fields of lush green grass. Since cows thrive on green grass, and grass was a plentiful resource, dairy farming became the logical agricultural pursuit in the area. Initially, these early dairy farmers churned out butter, hoping to market their product in the burgeoning city of Portland. However, reliable roads over the Coast Range were scarce in those days, and after unsuccessful attempts at hiring ships to transport their butter down the Columbia River, the local farmers pooled their money and constructed a small schooner in 1855, christening it the Morning Star. For many years, the Morning Star transported butter to markets in both Astoria and Portland. Today, the Morning Star lives on as part of the Tillamook Cheese logo.

In time, a shift occurred from making butter to producing cheese. Cheese was easier to ship than butter, and was less perishable during transport. As the years passed, Tillamook earned a solid reputation for producing quality cheese, and in 1893 two Portland entrepreneurs, Harry Ogden and Thaddeus Townsend, purchased their own herd of cows and founded the first cheese factory in Tillamook. In 1894, Townsend hired Canadian cheesemaker, Peter Duncan McIntosh, from a cheese factory in Woodland, Washington, to teach them the art of cheesemaking. It is McIntosh who is credited with educating local farmers on the production of cheddar cheese—the cheese that would become the signature variety for years to come. In 1909, a number of the region’s cheesemakers joined forces to create the Tillamook County Creamery Association. The mission of the TCCA was to promote Tillamook cheese, and to ensure
quality standards and brand consistency. With the construction of a railroad connection to Tillamook in 1911, Tillamook cheeses became available in cities up and down the West Coast. The early decades of the 20th century saw the demand for Tillamook cheese grow in leaps and bounds. Two world wars boosted both production and sales as federal government contracts resulted in the shipment of millions of pounds of cheese across the seas to the U.S. military abroad. By 1940, over a dozen independent cheesemakers were in business in the Tillamook area, all producing Tillamook cheese for the official brand of the Tillamook County Creamery Association. In 1947, the company began making ice cream as well, but initially it was only available in Tillamook, Clatsop, and Lincoln counties. Following World War II, the four largest cheese factories in the region— Holstein, Tillamook, Cloverleaf, and Mapleleaf—merged to form the Tillamook Cheese and Dairy Association (TCDA). In 1949, the TCDA constructed a sizable state-of-the-art facility along Highway 101 that quickly became a favorite tourist destination for coastal travelers, drawing more than a million visitors a year. The 1960s, however, saw a rift develop between the TCCA and the TCDA. A dispute broke out over the marketing of Grade A milk, which essentially split Tillamook’s dairy farmers and cheesemakers into opposing camps. Families were divided and the community was a powder keg of contention, and reconciliation proved elusive. At one point, violence actually erupted when a homemade bomb was detonated at the residence of Beale Dixon, the head of the TCCA, damaging the family home and automobile. The dispute dragged on for almost a decade, with both factions marketing their products as Tillamook Cheese. Finally, on January 1, 1969, after years of litigation, both sides came to an agreement and reorganized under the banner of the Tillamook County Creamery Association, now a single, unified corporation.
The TCCA continued production at the Bandon factory for two more years before making the decision to shutter the facility and demolish the building, though the company continues to market cheese under the Bandon Cheese brand. Further expansion occurred in 2001, when an additional plant was constructed in Boardman, Oregon along the Columbia River. This facility— Columbia River Processing—produces the majority of all cheese marketed under the Tillamook brand today. In 2005, in response to customer concerns over the use of Bovine Growth Hormone on dairy cattle, the TCCA made the decision to ban its use among its member farms. Today, a trip to Tillamook is not complete without a tour of the company’s visitor center. This new creamery, completed in 2018, includes a café, store, and restaurant where visitors can dine after learning about the history and operations of Oregon’s own premier cheesemaker. Tillamook has won hundreds of awards— local, domestic, and international—and like the old Morning Star schooner on its label, continues to deliver exceptional cheese and dairy products that would make its founders proud. Tillamook Cheese Factory is located at 4165 N Hwy 101, Tillamook, OR 97141 and is open from 10am to 6pm every day. For more information, please visit www.tillamook.com.
During the 1990s, Tillamook continued to expand their product line to include sour cream (1993) and yogurt (1994). In 2000, the TCCA purchased the Bandon Cheese Factory, an operation on the southern Oregon coast that had been struggling for many years. TUALATIN COMMUNITY ADVANTAGE MAGAZINE

Re-Fuel at a Quarter Tank We recommend you fuel your vehicle when the gauge reaches the one quarter mark on your fuel gauge. It gives you a safety margin from running out of gas, plus it’s better for your car.
Danny, Service Advisor
One cause of fuel pump failure is running the fuel tank low. Particularly on late model vehicles without a fuel pressure return system. Running such a vehicle out of fuel one time can permanently damage the fuel pump which is actually located inside the gas tank. If the tank fuel level drops too far, the electric fuel pump inside the tank is no longer immersed in gasoline, which the pump relies on for both lubricant and coolant. The pump, without fuel, runs hotter, shortening its lifetime.

HISTORY
Early Entrepreneurs On The Willamette The History of Boones Ferry By Robert Matsumura, Contributing Writer
H
ave you ever driven on Boones Ferry Road and wondered how this major byway winding from west Portland to south of Woodburn derived its name? You may possibly have heard rumors of this well-traveled road being associated with the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, but dismissed it as hearsay or the product of a fanciful imagination. If that’s the case, you may be surprised to learn that these rumors are not as far-fetched as they might seem. Boones Ferry Road received its name from Boones Ferry, a ferry which plied the Willamette River from 18471954 in the vicinity of modern Wilsonville. Although Daniel Boone himself was not directly responsible for the construction of Boones Ferry, his great-grandson, Jesse, and his family, established the ferry shortly after arriving in the area in the mid-19th century. Born in Kentucky on November 7, 1796, Boone’s grandson, Alphonso Boone Sr. moved to Jefferson City, Missouri where he worked a trading post that supplied travelers migrating west across the Great Plains. Following the premature death of his wife, Nancy, Alphonso and his children joined a wagon train bound for the Oregon Country. In Kansas their group banded together with the Donner Party, who were also heading west. However, unlike the Boone party which took the Applegate trail for the Northwest, the Donner Party split off towards Wyoming, where they met their infamous snowbound doom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

By Christmas of 1846, Alphonso and his family had reached Oregon and staked a land claim along the south bank of the Willamette River, between Oregon City and the pre-territorial settlement of Champoeg. In 1848, after approximately a year in Oregon, Alphonso and his two sons, Alphonso Jr. and Jesse, journeyed south to partake in the California gold rush, news of which had swept the nation by storm. While in California, Alphonso Sr. unfortunately succumbed to miner’s disease – a respiratory disorder that damages the lungs – and was buried along the Feather River in Butte County, CA. Until recently, it was believed that both of Alphonso’s sons returned to Oregon. However, local historians have determined that only Jesse made the trip back home. The fate of Alphonso Jr. is uncertain, but it appears he remained in California. In light of this discovery, historians agree that Jesse, upon returning from California, and with the help of his family, undertook construction of both the ferry system and the split-log road connecting Portland and Salem. This road came to be known as Boones Ferry Road, with a route that would eventually span Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties. Judging by this highway’s meandering nature, it is believed that Jesse followed routes established by indigenous tribes who had been traversing the region for centuries.
ownership of a herd of sheep. Following Jesse’s death, ownership of Boones Ferry passed through many hands, but eventually came to rest with Clackamas County. As the years passed, a community developed along the river’s north bank near the ferry terminal, which came to be known as Boones Landing. In 1880, Boones Landing was renamed Wilsonville in honor of the town’s first postmaster, Charles Wilson. During the 1900s, the ownership of Boones Ferry transferred from Clackamas County to the State of Oregon, which operated the ferry until it was decommissioned in 1954 due to the construction of the Baldock Freeway Bridge and the I-5 freeway. In honor of the now defunct ferry, the bridge was renamed Boone Bridge.

The earliest version of the Boones Ferry consisted of a pair of canoes joined together by a platform, which was powered by oarsmen from the Tualatin Tribe— members of the larger Kalapuya Nation, whose ancestral lands ranged throughout the Willamette Valley. The ferry navigated the Newport Pool stretch of the Willamette River. By the twentieth century, the old canoe-platform ferry had evolved into a cable barge which made up to 300 trips daily. This newer iteration was powered by an onboard motor that propelled it back and forth across the river along steel cables anchored to each shore. This modernized version was capable of transporting up to twelve vehicles at a time. Interestingly, old-timers who lived while the ferry still operated recall that it received a boost in revenue from bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across the river during Oregon’s early years—particularly the Prohibition era. The fact that the ferry operated twenty-four hours a day created the ideal situation for transporting illegal booze under cover of darkness. The Boone family’s operation on the Willamette was indeed a profitable venture. Prior to the advent of automobiles, when transportation through the Willamette Valley was either by foot, horseback, or horse-drawn carts, savvy

owners of river-front property recognized the demand for reliable passage across the region’s numerous waterways. Not surprisingly, the Boones weren’t the only enterprising individuals keen to capitalize on this business opportunity. John Taylor established Taylors Ferry on his property along the Tualatin River—hence, the subsequent construction of Taylors Ferry Road. Meanwhile, another pioneer from Daniel Boone’s Kentucky bloodline, Peter Scholl, also launched a ferry service on the Tualatin, access to which would lead to the development of today’s well-traveled Scholls Ferry Road. Boones Ferry was owned and operated by Jesse until 1872, when he was murdered by a neighbor over a dispute concerning
If you’re wondering what remains today of the old Boones Ferry, Wilsonville’s Boones Ferry Park now resides on the north shore of the Willamette River where the north terminal stood. The Tauchman House, located on the park grounds, was originally home to one of the ferry’s early operators, Emil Tauchman. Across the water on the opposite shore, a marina and boat ramp provide recreational access to the river at the location of the old south terminal. From the southbound lanes of I-5, should you gaze west while crossing the Boone Bridge, the location of the ferry lies approximately 660 yards up river. So the next time you’re stuck in traffic on Boones Ferry Road, take a moment to remember these intrepid pioneers whose names commemorate our region’s storied past. The ferries they established proved instrumental to the economic development of Portland and the Willamette Valley. Indeed, they played a critical role in shaping the layout of the very landscape we live in today.
