ot, fresh, delicious Mexican Food cooked to perfection, and served with love! El Sol de Mexico translated into English means “the sun of Mexico.” It also happens to be the name of a fantastic little Mexican Restaurant in Tualatin, and what a bright shining star it is! Located at 7028 SW Nyberg St. tucked back off the main road between Domino’s and the 76 Station (in the Nyberg Retail Center), it’s quite possible you may have missed it. But for fans of hearty, authentic, and tasty Mexican food and drink, it is absolutely worth the effort to seek out this hidden gem. Owner Jose Guitron has been in the industry for most of his life. Born and raised in Mexico, he moved to the United States at the age of 18, and immediately began working at a Mexican Restaurant in Federal Way, Washington. Starting from the ground up, he learned every aspect of the business.

Opportunities presented themselves over the years, and Jose rose to the occasion time and again, perfecting his culinary skills and business acumen with each new experience. The dream, of course, was to own his own restaurant. So when his cousin offered to partner with him on their own new venture, Jose was more than ready, and El Sol de Mexico was born. This Tualatin location was their first, and they opened their doors in 1993. With the perfect blend of Mexican authenticity and American sensibility, they were a breakout success. Six years later in 1999, they decided to expand, and the Tigard location was opened to equally rave reviews. Jose now owns both locations himself, and it’s a true labor of love for him. He can be found on site, working right alongside his wonderful and dedicated staff just about any day of the week. The warmth and enthusiasm he exudes is infectious and brings a genuinely comfortable, family-friendly atmosphere to each of the restaurants.

When it comes to eating out the bottom line is always the food, and in that respect El Sol de Mexico delivers in spades. Most everything on the menu is fresh and made from scratch with the utmost care and attention. You’ll notice the minute you sit down and dip into their fantastic house-made salsa and chips, that you’re in for a real treat. Every element of every dish on the menu has been developed and perfected over time, transforming old family recipes into exciting and fresh culinary experiences. Local favorites include their Fajitas (steak or chicken marinated in their secret sauce then sautéed with green onions and bell peppers, and served sizzling with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream and tortillas), their Carne Asada, Enchiladas, and a large variety of Camarones (shrimp) dishes. Everything they offer is delicious and hearty, and you will never leave hungry! Their appetizer menu includes some incredible nacho dishes. Their dessert menu includes Flan, Sopaipillas, and Churros, and their bar menu includes the best margaritas in town, not to mention a wide selection of other appropriately festive drinks, beer and wine. When A Community Comes Together By Donovan Darling, Staff Writer

The whole community came together to create the Portland area furniture bank, Community Warehouse. But what is a furniture bank? Much like a food bank that provides free food to those in need, a furniture bank provides household furnishings like furniture, decor, dishes, etc., to those in need. It wasn’t until 2012 that the Tualatin location began to serve the local community, but the full colorful history actually begins about 30 years ago! Back in the 90s in Portland, the American Jewish community committed to assist thousands of Jewish refugees emigrating from the former Soviet Union. Members of the Jewish Family and Child Service (JFCS) involved in the Russian Resettlement program, in an effort to collect donated furnishings for these refugee families, started the Portland Community Warehouse. Roz Babener, former volunteer coordinator, recalls: “The incoming families had nothing, and they saw their apartments filled with tables and chairs and dishes and beds, their expression of appreciation brought tears to your eyes.” After a few years immigration dwindled, and the JFCS returned its focus to the Jewish community as a whole. Donations poured in, and agencies beyond JFCS began requesting furnishings. Roz stepped up to organize a small volunteer group to acquire community resources and form the Community Warehouse as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit

organization. In 2001, Community Warehouse expanded their services to include those reintegrating from homelessness, immigrants and refugees, survivors of domestic violence, veterans, children, individuals with developmental or physical disabilities, and even neighbors in need.

In those early years, Community Warehouse moved from the YWCA to rental spaces in North, Northwest, and Southeast Portland. Then in 2007, they purchased their first truck to pick up donations. Soon after they opened the Estate Store, at first a weekly community event and eventually two retail storefronts, to sell antiques and collectibles which provided additional revenue to operating costs. After a 2009 fundraising campaign, Community Warehouse purchased the building on NE MLK Jr. Blvd. A few years later in 2012, they realized the need to expand services to Clackamas and Washington counties, purchasing a second building in Tualatin on SW Nyberg St. These days, Community Warehouse engages 200+ partner agencies to serve more than 7,500 individuals annually. Community Warehouse is the current main resource in NW Oregon and SW Washington for low-income persons and families in need of essential household goods and furnishings. They currently employ 25 paid staff members and hundreds of volunteers. The founders continue their active involvement in the daily operations and expansion of Community Warehouse.

Christopher Reeve:

Superman I-IV (1978, 1980, 1983, 1987)

Started 44 years ago, Superman I and Superman II blew peoples’ minds! I think this franchise’s success greatly depends upon visionary director Richard Donner, who directed great movies like the Lethal Weapon series and cult classics The Goonies & The Lost Boys. These movies are action-packed, funny, and just solid entertainment (III & IV aren’t as great, but still good). The starstudded cast includes Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor), Marlon Brando (Jor-El), Ned Beatty (Otis), and Margot Kidder (Lois Lane), among others. But let’s not forget Christopher Reeve, a Cornell and Juilliard School graduate, and classically trained actor. His simple spandex, dark slicked hair and curl were true to the comics, and his kind, sly, understated demeanor were fantastic—the Man of Steel was a true American hero. He played Clark Kent exactly as he should be—meek, bumbling, and clumsy, in the iconic thick black glasses. And that Clark Kent good-naturedness carries into his Superman, an altruistic and all-powerful alien who finds his humanity. Rated PG, watch these classics!

Superman Returns (2006)

The black sheep of Superman movies, Bryan Singer directed and wrote the story, who also directed the hit or miss X-Men movies and the recently acclaimed Bohemian Rhapsody. Although visually slick, the pacing is a bit slow, the story too focused on romance instead of action, and Brandon Routh’s Superman is a tad stoic. That said, it’s polished and watchable, but not my favorite. Co-starring Kevin Spacey (Lex Luthor), Kate Bosworth (Lois Lane), James Marsden (Richard White), and Parker Posey (Kitty Kowalski), and others. Rated PG-13, it’s a solid entry in the Superman cinematic universe.

Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), Justice League (2017)

Heir apparent to Christopher Reeve and bearing an incredible resemblance, Henry Cavill has 3 films under his belt as Superman and he’s fantastic! Cavill’s Superman is just as sly, kind, and softspoken as Reeve’s, but he’s much more ripped and modern in today’s superhero heyday. Ultimately, you just like Cavill and want to root for him. Directed by the polarizing, long-winded, but reliable Zack Snyder, the movies are visually spectacular, action-packed, funny, and really fun to watch. Man of Steel has a star-studded cast rivaling the original movies, including Amy Adams (Lois Lane), Michael Shannon (General Zod), Diane Lane (Martha Kent), Laurence Fishburne (Perry White), Kevin Costner (Jonathan Kent), Russel Crowe (Jor-El), and more. BvS and Justice League are team-up movies but still Supermancentric and solid entertainment. Rated PG-13, give them a watch!

After all, this charming beach community is a short scenic drive from the city, the perfect place to stroll the beach, shop, or enjoy an ice cream cone while people-watching on Main Street. Have you ever wondered though, about the origins of this cherished beach community? Archaeological records indicate the Cannon Beach area was inhabited by early ancestors of the indigenous Tillamook people as early as the 15th century. The beginnings of Cannon Cannon Beach Early 20th Century Beach as we know it today, however, trace back to the 19th which shipwrecked on the treacherous century and the famous expedition Columbia River Bar in 1846.
