ffering refreshing beer by the pitcher, burgers by the pound, and all of the classic pub food that you can imagine, it’s the place to go for great food in a casual setting! If you’re a regular, they welcome you back!

If this is your first time, you’ll soon discover this is a great place to hang out and have fun!

Hank Jarboe, the owner of Boston’s, has been in the restaurant industry for over 40 years, starting as a dishwasher and working his way up to becoming the owner of his own business. He’s owned and managed Boston’s for the last 28 years, and has seen tremendous growth of the business as well as the enduring loyalty of local patrons.

Hank has watched parents bring their kids into the restaurant for years, and now the parents are grandparents who still come back time and again, bringing in a whole new generation as well!

Boston’s is known for their quality ingredients and laid back ambiance. When you walk into the 8

restaurant, you will see lots of TVs and get a sports bar vibe, but don’t worry, you will always know that the place is clean, the staff is friendly, and the food is fresh!

The executive chef has been at the restaurant since the beginning and has developed the flavors to be distinct to Boston’s, keeping them simple but unique. They offer a widely varied menu, including breakfast options, salads, seafood, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, and classic comfort foods like slow-roasted pot roast and homemade meatloaf.

If you aren’t quite sure what to order, there are a couple items that you absolutely must try: Boston’s famous Halibut Fish & Chips or their Fried Chicken & Fries. Both get rave reviews and have the regulars coming back for more. You should definitely order their Fabulous Fries too! They are thick and delicious, and unlike any fry you will find elsewhere. Don’t forget about their Happy Hour menu either. You can get delicious sliders, salads, burgers, snacks, drinks and more for great prices!

Being locally owned, Boston’s is very active in the Wilsonville community. They participate in many different events and donate gift cards and food as well. It’s important to Hank that the restaurant supports the local schools and sports programs. Boston’s donates every year to the local football team, and they are always willing to do what they can for other organizations in the area.

For 28 years Boston’s has had one goal: making sure that everyone feels taken care of. Finding a few moments to enjoy life can be difficult, so the Boston’s staff is there to make sure that you get the most out of your time with them! This is a place where friends, families, and sports lovers with an appetite can gather to celebrate the big wins and the small victories over a great meal. TUALATIN VFW POST #3452

HOPE & HEALING

E

stablished in 1914, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States Auxiliary set out to serve the veterans of this country and our communities in honor of the sacrifices and commitment of every man and woman who has served in uniform. We have unwavering support for uncommon heroes.

Before the beginning of World War II, twenty three overseas veterans gathered on August 31, 1940. Before the evening was over, they had elected officers and decided on the name Axel Rasmussen VFW. Major Rasmussen, brother of charter member R. W. Rasmussen, was a member of the U.S. Army First Division and was decorated with the Distinguished Service Cross by the United States and Croix de Guerre by the Government of France. He was killed on May 4, 1918 in France.

Major Axel Rasmussen Post 3452 was officially charted on October 25, 1940. The first vote of the Post was to form a Ladies Auxiliary. Twenty three ladies proceeded to organize and have been active ever since. The Post first held their meetings at Winona Grange while the ladies met at the Old Fellows Hall.

Over the years, the Tualatin VFW Post has welcomed veterans from Tigard, Lake Oswego, and other areas. The original Post met in its own building at 8455 SW Seneca and has since moved to 18820 SW Boones Ferry Road in Tualatin. The post building was the major social center for the Tualatin Community in the 50s and 60s, with weekend dances open to the community.

Tualatin had fewer than 1,000 people until 1974!

Post 3452 started Tualatin’s Annual Crawfish Festival in 1951. At that time, the river had an abundance of critters.

As a fundraiser, by the members and Women’s Auxiliary, the crawfish were cooked and sold to the festival attendees during the first four years in order to raise $4000 to build its first post building on Seneca Street. The festival is now coordinated by the Tualatin Chamber of Commerce.

These days Post 3452 continues to support the local community through various fundraising efforts, like the Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. Each year, more than 4,000 high school students grades 9-12 from across the country enter the VFW Auxiliary’s Young American Creative Patriotic Art Contest. The first-place winner from each state advances to national judging and competes for national awards totaling $33,000 in scholarships.

Other community support efforts include their annual November partnership with Burger King® franchise restaurants to raise funds in support of the VFW’s Unmet Needs program. Now in its 15th year, the annual campaign encourages Burger King® customers to donate $1 or more to the program with their purchase.

LUCKY CHARM TREATS: 6 T Unsalted Butter 16 Oz Mini Marshmallows 21 Oz Marshmallow Fluff 2 T Pure Vanilla Extract 15 C Lucky Charms Cereal ½ C Rainbow Jimmies DIRECTIONS

These Lucky Charms Treats are gooey and loaded with marshmallows. They’re topped with a thin layer of buttercream and even more marshmallows!

BUTTERCREAM: 8 T Butter Softened 1 C Confectioners’ Sugar ¼ t Pure Vanilla Extract ½ T Cream or Milk TOPPING & GARNISH: ½ C Marshmallows From Lucky Charms Cereal 2 T Rainbow Jimmies

1. Line a 13×9-inch baking dish with foil. Spray the foil with nonstick cooking spray.

2. In a large pot, melt butter over low heat. Add marshmallows, stir until they are melted.

3. Remove the pot from heat and stir in the marshmallow fluff and vanilla. Then stir in the Lucky Charms and jimmies until the cereal is evenly coated.

4. Pour the mixture into the prepared pan. Let the treats cool for at least one hour before frosting.

5. Meanwhile, make the buttercream using a stand mixer. Then spread the frosting evenly over the treats.

6. Finally, top with Lucky Charms marshmallows and rainbow jimmies. Cut into 24 bars and serve.

Gorgeous, weird, and charming, this animated movie steps into Irish mythology while positively dealing with grief as the story follows Keegan (Sam Hardy), a boy who’s coming to terms with the death of his grandfather (Pierce Brosnan). The film shows how kids can navigate a family member’s death by honoring their memory and making them proud.

The movie celebrates cultural and spiritual tradition, and how values are passed down through generations. Community and teamwork are demonstrated through the fun and musical dance sequences, including dancing giant elk! A harmless and surprisingly insightful movie for the whole family!

Darby O’Gill (Albert Sharpe), a groundskeeper in the Irish countryside, gets fired and can’t tell his daughter, Katie (Janet Munro), that he’s been replaced by a handsome younger man (Sean Connery!). A teller of tall tales and hardly respected, Darby stumbles home from the pub and falls into a portal of “little people,” meeting and accidentally taking the leprechaun king, Brian (Jimmy O’Dea), home with him.

Darby then demands Brian grant him three wishes, but the request brings Darby unexpected and bittersweet results. It’s silly, musical, lighthearted, folkloric, and great for the whole family on Saint Patrick’s Day!

A true Irish comedy that’s as fun as it is heartwarming, this late 90s flick follows an Irish village who, after local villager Ned Devine dies from shock when he wins the lottery, attempts to claim the money and convince authorities that he’s still alive! Completely preposterous and hilarious, you’ll find yourself rooting for these adorable and ridiculous villagers the whole time! The irony, of course, is that money is the least of their concerns, as what really matters is community. Starring Ian Bannen, David Kelly, and Fionnula Flanagan, it’s a classic Irish movie suitable for the family—although younger kids may not find it as hilarious as adults!

In t h is roma nt ic comedy, whimsical Rosemary (Emily Blunt) swoons for her neighbor Anthony (Jamie Dornan), a hunky and headstrong farmer tending his family’s land in the Irish countryside. Like all rom-coms there has to be a capital P problem to keep the lovers apart and this is no exception, as Anthony seems to have inherited a family curse and remains oblivious to his beautiful admirer. Stung by his father Tony’s (Christopher Walken) plans to sell the family farm to his American nephew (Jon Hamm), Anthony runs headfirst into pursuing his dreams. What it lacks in plot points it makes up for with whimsy and gushy longing. Great for couples looking to escape into the rolling green hills of romantic Ireland.

Elmer’s Flag & Banner was started by Elmer Reider in 1963. A former car salesman, Elmer learned about a new kind of business when his car lot was visited by a man whose trade was decorating dealerships with flags, signs and colorful banners.

“The story goes that there was a guy who was coming around doing decorations for the car lot,” explains Dave Anchel, president of Elmer’s. “Elmer asked him if he was making any money and the guy said, ‘Better than you!’”

Elmer believed it, so he left auto sales for the car lot decorating business. The store prospered, thanks to his talent for spotting niche business opportunities, like flags and banners, and his commitment to building customer loyalty with quality products and honest service. Today, Elmer’s is Portland’s largest flag, banner and kite store, with 4,000 square feet of products, everything from weathervanes to windsocks.

Anchel grew up in rural northeast Pennsylvania, where he spent 22 years in the family business, learning how to run a successful small company. In their search for a business to purchase, Anchel and his wife visited Portland and fell in love. “We came to Portland, had some really good chocolate and said to each other, ‘We could live here,’” he recalls.

Variety is the spice of life and it’s also what you’ll find at Elmer’s.

Anchel estimates the store offers some 8,000 different products, about 1,200 of which are available online. Elmer’s also makes

its own custom flags and banners, by hand and in-house. They make both high-quality, digitally designed flags and banners, and are one of the only companies in the United States that still does appliqué - the time-honored tradition of sewing one piece of fabric onto another - just like Betsy Ross.

“We make those by hand, upstairs in our sewing shop, and they look gorgeous,” Anchel explains. “It’s for when people want an heirloom quality flag, like of their family crest, or when a high school wins a championship and wants to hoist a banner to their gymnasium ceiling.”

Elmer’s also manufactures, sells, installs and services custom poles, including two of the tallest in the state of Oregon, measuring 120 feet. “They’re monsters,” Anchel says with a laugh.

I

f you are in search of inspiration for your next home project, look no further than Clark Lumber Hardware, a charming local business located right off Tonquin Road!

Built with a passion for helping people, Clark Lumber Hardware was founded in 1965 by Earl Clark. Their original location was in Tualatin, a building you may remember seeing if you ever took a drive down Tualatin-Sherwood Road. Today, Clark’s is run by his great granddaughter, Stacey Clark. She knew from a young age that she wanted to carry on this family name and become a fourth generation business owner.

standing water after the 1996 Tualatin River floods, this paramount local business was decimated in July of 2016 by a massive fire. After only a few hours, over 50 years of history were destroyed and it was all deemed a total loss.

Clark, the 1989 Sherwood High School graduate, recalls working afternoons and weekends when she was growing up, “I always had to prove myself to clients and customers - but you learn a lot really quickly when your family runs a building supply business.” Lucky for her, she had the inside look at both sides of the business - her father ran the floor and her mother kept the books.

This local staple has not had the easiest history, though.

In typical Clark Lumber style, they were up and operating out of a small construction trailer in a couple days’ time. They managed to keep business afloat by delivery and custom orders. “There were days it felt like nothing was different, until you looked outside and saw ashes,” jokes Stacey. Less than one year after the fire, Clark Lumber Hardware had laid it’s new roots at their current location, nestled perfectly in between Sherwood, Wilsonville and Tualatin.

Unfortunately, tragedy would not stop there. In 2018, the guiding force of Clark’s died. Stacey’s father, Harvey, had run Clark Lumber Hardware for the majority of his adult life. His passing was felt by many, but the strength of this business lives on today through Stacey. “Taking care of my community is important,” she said. “All of those generations who built this, the legacy, it keeps me going.”

With so much history behind them, Clark Lumber Hardware believes that everyone has a place at their store; whether you’re an expert contractor or a do-it-yourself novice. Their team has over 150 years of collective experience, ranging from electrical, plumbing, construction and even gardening! They are ready to assist you with whatever questions you may have.

Fur Traders, Settlers, And The Hudson Bay Company

or many of us, Fort Vancouver and fireworks are synonymous with the Fourth of July. As one of the region’s largest fireworks displays, thousands gather each year to enjoy the brilliant pyrotechnics exploding over the shimmering waters of the Columbia. This annual celebration could not be located at a more prominent site when considering the significance of Fort Vancouver to the history of our region.

Established in 1824 as a trading post for the British Hudson Bay Company, Fort Vancouver was headquarters for the Company’s Columbia Department which covered 700,000 square miles stretching from Alaska to California, and from the Rocky Mountains to Hawaii. The fort was named after Captain George Vancouver, a British Naval officer known for his exploration of the Pacific Northwest, British Columbia, Hawaii, and Australia.

Holding the position of Chief Factor for 22 years, McLoughlin administered the law among his British subjects, kept peace with the indigenous, and strived to maintain amicable relations with the American settlers in the nearby Willamette Valley. It was McLoughlin who had originally allowed Americans to settle south of the Columbia River, which earned him the title, “Father of Oregon.” Contrary to the wishes of the HBC, McLoughlin provided substantial aid to American settlers, and in 1846 he resigned from the Company to found Oregon City along the bank of the Willamette River.

George Simpson, an employee of the HBC, was initially responsible for founding the fort.

However, it was Dr. John McLoughlin, the fort’s first Chief Factor (manager), who was instrumental in developing Fort Vancouver as a primary hub of commerce in the region. At the time, the northwest was still in f lux, with the f ledgling United States vying with Great Britain for dominance over the territory. The fur trade, which was well-established in the area, generated immense profits for the HBC, and the Company was committed to safeguarding this valuable

Fort Vancouver was originally composed of a 20-foot high palisade approximately 750 feet long by 450 feet wide. Inside the palisade were 40 buildings, including a school, library, pharmacy, chapel, and blacksmith shop, along with individual homes. Residing outside the walls were a tannery, shipyard, hospital, and distillery. Agricultural products were cultivated in the orchards and fields surrounding the fort, in addition to a dairy providing milk and cheese. At the height of its activity, Fort Vancouver employed up to 600 workers who

staffed its network of two dozen trading posts, with six ships regularly plying the waters of the Columbia in transport of the Company’s goods. It was one of the largest settlements in the West, and also served as the end-point for migrants on the Oregon Trail. Between 1840-1850, fur trading revenue began to decline as increasing settlement of the region led to an economic shift towards mercantile activities based largely on agriculture, livestock, and timber operations.

Originally, the fort’s primary employees consisted of French Canadians and members of indigenous tribes including the Metis, Iroquois and Cree. English, Scots, and Irish were found among the workforce as well. In the 1850s, workers from Hawaii arrived to augment the burgeoning enterprise, and in time became so populous that the village outside the fort became known as “Kanaka Town” or “Kanaka Village.” “Kanaka” translates roughly to “Hawaiian native,” or “Pacific Islander.”

By 1849, this multi-cultural village was home not only to the employees of the HBC, but also became the site of Camp Columbia, a military base for the U.S. Army located on a rise 20 feet above the fort. Initially, traders and soldiers coexisted amicably at the fort. The Army provided additional employment for local workers and rented buildings in the village. The HBC allowed the Army access to its sawmill for cutting timber to construct the military post. During this period the Army built a number of structures, including the Quartermaster Depot and Captain Rufus Ingalls’ home, where the future Civil War general and U.S. President, Ulysses S. Grant, lived from 1852-1853. In time, the Army expanded the post to more than 10,000 acres and renamed it Fort Vancouver Military Reservation.

land overlapped the HBC’s fur trade activities, sparked conf licts between the Company and the United States. In June of 1860, the HBC withdrew from Fort Vancouver and consolidated its operations in Victoria, British Columbia.

Following the departure of the HBC, the Army took over the fort and commenced adding additional facilities, notably the Vancouver Arsenal in 1859.

Unfortunately, catastrophe struck in 1866 when a fire broke out that destroyed the entire original trading post. Over time soldiers rebuilt the fort, adding two double-story barracks at each end of the parade grounds. Officer quarters were also erected during this phase. In 1879, the post was renamed the Vancouver Barracks, and by World War I it had grown considerably.

Upon the outbreak of World War II, the Army mobilized the post as a staging area for the Seattle Port of Embarkation. In 1946, the fort was officially closed.

To honor Fort Vancouver’s historical significance, on June 19, 1948, the site was declared a U.S. National Monument. It was re-designated “Fort Vancouver National Historic Site” on June 30, 1961. Today, visitors can tour a full-scale replica of the original fort, including historical re-enactments and exhibits commemorating this iconic landmark, a site that figured prominently in our regional heritage.

In the wake of the 1846 Oregon Treaty, which established the U.S./Canadian border at the 49th parallel north, Fort Vancouver was effectively isolated within U.S. borders. And while the treaty provided for the HBC to continue operations at Fort Vancouver—including free access to the Columbia, Puget Sound, and Straits of Juan de Fuca—conducting business had become problematic.
