The Surprising History of Rudolph By Donovan Darling, Active Media Staff Writer

ou’ve probably never heard of Rankin/Bass Animated Entertainment, but you’ve certainly seen their abundant and classic Christmas movies. The most popular stop-motion Christmas movies they produced were Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964), Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town (1970), The Year Without a Santa Claus (1974), The First Christmas (1975), Rudolph’s Shiny New Year (1976), and Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas in July (1979). While far from being new, these heartwarming movies continue to charm new generations every holiday season. First known as Videocraft International, Ltd., the company was founded by Arthur Rankin, Jr. and Jules Bass in New York City in 1960. Most of the Rankin / Bass animations, including their “Animagic” stop-motion movies, were produced in Tokyo, Japan. In fact, most of the studio’s animation was outsourced to Japanese companies like MOM Production, Eiken, Toei Animation, Mushi Productions, and Topcraft. Rankin / Bass was one of the first American film studios to outsource low-budget animated television and movies to foreign animation studios. Throughout the 1960s, the Animagic movies were spearheaded by stop-motion animator Tadahito Mochinaga at MOM Production. Rankin / Bass remained successful for many years thanks to their animated holiday specials which aired for American television. In 1964, the company produced a special for NBC and sponsored by General Electric: a stop-motion animated adaptation of Robert L. May’s 1939 story “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer,” which featured the 1949 song it inspired, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” written by May’s brother-in-law, Johnny Marks. With American actor Burl Ives as Sam the Snowman and narrator, with an original score by Marks himself, Rudolph became one of the most popular and longest-running Christmas specials in television history, airing with NBC until 1972 when it FOR ADVERTISING INFORMATION CALL 503.825.2111

moved to CBS. After its last series output, Rankin / Bass shut down its production company on March 4, 1987. The look and style of the films has heavily influenced more modern holiday classics such as Elf (2003), as well as being parodied by Saturday Night Live and South Park. The figurines featured in Rudolph were created by Japanese puppet-maker Ichiro Komuro for the fan favorite stop-motion movie. “These were hand-made. They weren’t toys,” pop culture memorabilia appraiser Simeon Lipman told PBS in 2006. “They had mechanisms to make them move, to make them come almost alive. No mass manufacturer of toys, especially in the 1960s, made things like that. It was made to be on film.” The 6-inch-tall Rudolph and 11-inchtall Santa were made of wood, wire, cloth, and leather, with Rudolph’s nose lighting up and Santa’s beard made from yak hair. Sometime in the 70s, the puppets came to Barbara Adams, a secretary at Rankin / Bass. She used the figurines to decorate her Christmas tree, and let her nieces and nephews play with them like toys. Later, most of the figurines ended up tragically melting in a hot attic, presumably Barbara’s. Her nephew brought the survivors, Santa and Rudolph, to the Antiques Roadshow, where they were valued at $8,000 to $10,000. A toy collector, Keith Kriess, purchased the puppets for an undisclosed amount, but much more than that appraisal. He then spent $4,000 to have them meticulously restored. Before that, Rudolph had lost his nose, and Santa was missing half his yak-hair mustache. Santa and Rudolph were successfully restored, according to Peter Lutrario, who purchased them from Keith for an undisclosed amount. In late 2020, Peter sold them to an anonymous auction bidder, who won them for a whopping $368,000! Although the current whereabouts of the figurines are unknown, we can be sure that Rudolph and Santa are alive and well in their Rankin/Bass stop-motion movies, emblazoning television screens each December all across the world. Magical and heartwarming to this day, these Christmas films pioneered holiday television specials, forever changed the world of animation, and continue to capture our imagination and hearts.

reat yourself to good times and great food at Tualatin’s perennial favorite watering hole, The CI Bar & Grill! This is no flash in the pan, hereone-day-gone-the-next, sort of establishment. The CI Bar & Grill has been a local area landmark ever since the 1930’s, when it was originally known as The Spot Tavern. Ownership changed hands in 1974, and it was rebranded as the Country Inn, but as you can imagine, some people were confused by the new name, mistaking it for either a country bar or a hotel. Keeping the initials, they simplified it to CI and since then they’ve consistently provided the best food, drink, and entertainment in the area!

Owner Dave Phillips is exactly the kind of person who should own a popular bar and grill; warm, friendly, personable, but with just the right amount of gruffness. You just know this guy has seen and heard it all. He’s your best friend; the bartender you spill your guts to because you know he’s going to give it to you straight. His natural and sincere affinity for people is a prerequisite for the position, but you also know intuitively that this is a man who commands your respect. Dave started at CI in 1994 when he was hired as General Manager. He worked there for 20 years before taking over in 2014. purposes, Dave considers the place to have been under the same ownership all that time. It’s the same situation regarding the staff. Most of the employees have been with Dave for 15 to 20 years, and he says he has the best crew in the business! He is so pleased and grateful to have an amazing kitchen staff, too. Everyone works hard and gets along, so it’s just one big happy family! Dave is exceedingly proud of the fact that the quality of the food they serve is not what you’d typically expect to find at a bar and grill of this sort. First and foremost, everything is made from scratch; they’re not grabbing stuff out of the freezer and tossing it in the microwave here. You’re getting honest-to-goodness real food, made with real ingredients, using recipes that are unique to the CI! Dave put it this way: they run their business, and in particular they design their menu, around their regulars. In other words, he maintains such high standards of quality and provides such a variety, that the people who are coming in multiple times per week, can enjoy

new, and has been upgraded with their patrons’ comfort in mind.

That said, there are a few standout dishes that they are known for, and that people come from far and wide to partake of. Their most popular item, one they are consistently lauded for having “the best in town,” is their clam chowder. It’s made from scratch, and people tell Dave that it’s literally better than even the fanciest of restaurants in town. Other favorites include the Cod Fish n’ Chips, their Prime Rib French Dip, Huevos Rancheros, and their Chicken Focaccia Sandwich.

As much as they are known for their delicious meals, the CI is also known for hosting great live music and entertainment. While COVID-19 put a hold on all of that for a while, it’s making a comeback. ave you ever stood in the wine aisle of your local grocers during the holidays, baffled as to the appropriate wine for meals featuring poultry, beef, pork, or seafood—not to mention the array of appetizers and side dishes? Our guide below will help simplify this process with six wines flexible enough to compliment your holiday cuisines from autumn through winter.

Sauvignon Blanc

Also referred to as “Sancerre” in France, this medium-light bodied white wine is a winner. It features a crisp, herbal profile perfect for turkey, goose, chicken, or seafood.

Pinot Noir

With its bright acidity and versatile nature, Pinot Noir is one of the best choices for the holidays. It excels across the board with poultry, pork, and hearty beef dishes. The Pacific Northwest and California offer many solid choices with fruit-forward characteristics sure to please even the most discriminating palates.

Zinfandel

A more full-bodied white, Chardonnay is an excellent partner to fish or roast poultry. Likewise, Chardonnay pairs beautifully with beef, should you have guests who prefer to drink only white. In this case, opt for an oak-forward Chardonnay, as it will enhance the robust flavors of the beef.

Red Zinfandel has long been considered a great Thanksgiving wine for its ability to compliment turkey while also blending well with cranberry sauce and other sides. Its fruit-forward profile, along with notes of cinnamon, clove, and vanilla evoke the holiday season. Zinfandel also performs admirably with beef and pork, should your holiday dinner include a roast or baked ham.

Chardonnay

Not as well-known as other whites, Viognier is a fantastic partner to roast turkey and other poultry dishes. Rounded in body with undertones of honey and spice, some of the best Viognier comes from the Rhone region of France, as well as Australia and South Africa. Like Chardonnay, Viognier can also play well with beef.

Cabernet Sauvignon, the “King of Reds,” is the ultimate pairing for beef. Cabernet’s dark, full-bodied character, often reminiscent of currants and black cherry, enhances the hearty flavors of such entrees as prime rib or crown roast.

Syrah/Shiraz

Another fabulous red wine to pair with beef is Syrah (known as Shiraz in Australia). This luscious red bursts with complex flavors from pepper to cherry, smoky to floral. Syrah, made in France’s Rhone Valley, is generally known more for its elegance and complexity, while Shiraz is bolder and more fruit-driven. If beef is on the menu, you can’t go wrong with Syrah.

Let’s say you’ve been invited to a holiday event and wish to bring a bottle of wine, but you’re uncertain of the menu. The safest choices might be Pinot Noir or Chardonnay. s the holidays roll around, entertaining family and friends takes center stage. For many of us the holiday cheese board is a star player in the food festivities, yet with the plethora of choices available at local markets, assembling it can prove a bit daunting.

Basic Strategy

For presentation purposes, select cheeses of different colors, shapes, and sizes. When calculating the amount of cheese to purchase, three ounces per guest is a solid guideline. Thus, if you’re serving three types of cheese and entertaining 12 guests, you should buy at least 12 ounces of each type. If other appetizers will be served, the amount of cheese can be reduced to two ounces. In general, three varieties of cheese—a hard, a semi-hard, and a soft—will provide ample variety for most events.

Hard Cheeses Aged Gouda

This Dutch cheese is always a strong player on any cheese board. If you prefer a sharper, nuttier flavor with those delicious salty bits, opt for a Gouda aged at least 10 months. Many of the premier Goudas will be aged up to 18 months or more. Top brands include Beemster, Parrano, and Rembrandt.

Manchego

A full-bodied cheese made from sheep’s milk, this Spanish cheese from the La Mancha region is creamy yet nutty with toasty nuances. Aged Manchego has a wonderful granular texture much like aged Gouda, and will be a superb compliment to fruit or meats such as prosciutto, salami, and capicola.

Cheddar

Early Entrepreneurs On The Willamette The History of Boones Ferry By Robert Matsumura, Active Media Contributing Writer

ave you ever driven on Boones Ferry Road and wondered how this major byway winding from west Portland to south of Woodburn derived its name? You may possibly have heard rumors of this well-traveled road being associated with the famous frontiersman Daniel Boone, but dismissed it as hearsay or the product of a fanciful imagination. If that’s the case, you may be surprised to learn that these rumors are not as far-fetched as they might seem. Boones Ferry Road received its name from Boones Ferry, a ferry which plied the Willamette River from 18471954 in the vicinity of modern Wilsonville. Although Daniel Boone himself was not directly responsible for the construction of Boones Ferry, his great-grandson, Jesse, and his family, established the ferry shortly after arriving in the area in the mid-19th century. Born in Kentucky on November 7, 1796, Boone’s grandson, Alphonso Boone Sr. moved to Jefferson City, Missouri where he worked a trading post that supplied travelers migrating west across the Great Plains. Following the premature death of his wife, Nancy, Alphonso and his children joined a wagon train bound for the Oregon Country. In Kansas their group banded together with the Donner Party, who were also heading west. However, unlike the Boone party which took the Applegate trail for the Northwest, the Donner Party split off towards Wyoming, where they met their infamous snowbound doom in the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

By Christmas of 1846, Alphonso and his family had reached Oregon and staked a land claim along the south bank of the Willamette River, between Oregon City and the pre-territorial settlement of Champoeg. In 1848, after approximately a year in Oregon, Alphonso and his two sons, Alphonso Jr. and Jesse, journeyed south to partake in the California gold rush, news of which had swept the nation by storm. While in California, Alphonso Sr. unfortunately succumbed to miner’s disease – a respiratory disorder that damages the lungs – and was buried along the Feather River in Butte County, CA. Until recently, it was believed that both of Alphonso’s sons returned to Oregon. However, local historians have determined that only Jesse made the trip back home. The fate of Alphonso Jr. is uncertain, but it appears he remained in California. In light of this discovery, historians agree that Jesse, upon returning from California, and with the help of his family, undertook construction of both the ferry system and the split-log road connecting Portland and Salem. This road came to be known as Boones Ferry Road, with a route that would eventually span Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, and Marion counties. Judging by this highway’s meandering nature, it is believed that Jesse followed routes established by indigenous tribes who had been traversing the region for centuries.

As the years passed, a community developed along the river’s north bank near the ferry terminal, which came to be known as Boones Landing. In 1880, Boones Landing was renamed Wilsonville in honor of the town’s first postmaster, Charles Wilson. During the 1900s, the ownership of Boones Ferry transferred from Clackamas County to the State of Oregon, which operated the ferry until it was decommissioned in 1954 due to the construction of the Baldock Freeway Bridge and the I-5 freeway. In honor of the now defunct ferry, the bridge was renamed Boone Bridge.

The earliest version of the Boones Ferry consisted of a pair of canoes joined together by a platform, which was powered by oarsmen from the Tualatin Tribe— members of the larger Kalapuya Nation, whose ancestral lands ranged throughout the Willamette Valley. The ferry navigated the Newport Pool stretch of the Willamette River. By the twentieth century, the old canoe-platform ferry had evolved into a cable barge which made up to 300 trips daily. This newer iteration was powered by an onboard motor that propelled it back and forth across the river along steel cables anchored to each shore. This modernized version was capable of transporting up to twelve vehicles at a time. Interestingly, old-timers who lived while the ferry still operated recall that it received a boost in revenue from bootleggers who smuggled moonshine across the river during Oregon’s early years—particularly the Prohibition era. The fact that the ferry operated twenty-four hours a day created the ideal situation for transporting illegal booze under cover of darkness. The Boone family’s operation on the Willamette was indeed a profitable venture. Prior to the advent of automobiles, when transportation through the Willamette Valley was either by foot, horseback, or horse-drawn carts, savvy

owners of river-front property recognized the demand for reliable passage across the region’s numerous waterways. Not surprisingly, the Boones weren’t the only enterprising individuals keen to capitalize on this business opportunity. John Taylor established Taylors Ferry on his property along the Tualatin River—hence, the subsequent construction of Taylors Ferry Road. Meanwhile, another pioneer from Daniel Boone’s Kentucky bloodline, Peter Scholl, also launched a ferry service on the Tualatin, access to which would lead to the development of today’s well-traveled Scholls Ferry Road. Boones Ferry was owned and operated by Jesse until 1872, when he was murdered by a neighbor over a dispute concerning

If you’re wondering what remains today of the old Boones Ferry, Wilsonville’s Boones Ferry Park now resides on the north shore of the Willamette River where the north terminal stood. The Tauchman House, located on the park grounds, was originally home to one of the ferry’s early operators, Emil Tauchman. Across the water on the opposite shore, a marina and boat ramp provide recreational access to the river at the location of the old south terminal. From the southbound lanes of I-5, should you gaze west while crossing the Boone Bridge, the location of the ferry lies approximately 660 yards up river. So the next time you’re stuck in traffic on Boones Ferry Road, take a moment to remember these intrepid pioneers whose names commemorate our region’s storied past. The ferries they established proved instrumental to the economic development of Portland and the Willamette Valley. Indeed, they played a critical role in shaping the layout of the very landscape we live in today.
