HUNNY BEEZ FOOD TRUCKS YOUR BACKYARD BARBECUE WITH A FILIPINO TWIST

Craving backyard barbecue this winter? No worries. Hunny Beez, “Your Backyard Barbecue with a Filipino Twist,” serves mouth-watering smoked and grilled cuisine all year round. Hunny Beez Filipino Fusion will have your taste buds humming with Filipino flavors!

Hunny Beez prepares food from scratch, including their authentic Filipino sauces and meat rubs. “People are always surprised to see us purée pear and reduce brown sugar and soy sauce,” says Andrew Wegman, co-owner of Hunny Beez. “They’ve commented, ‘Wow! You guys really do everything from scratch.’” Although food truck suppliers offer pre-cooked, ready-to-heat foods, Hunny Beez prefers to get all their meats delivered fresh from a local meat supplier. Quality pork, chicken, brisket, and burger patties (cut to their specifications) are always bought fresh, then smoked, or grilled to order. Quality produce is also sourced directly.

Collaborating with his longtime Filipino friend, Blossom, the two founded Hunny Beez in April of 2019 and opened their first food truck restaurant in Newberg that September. Andrew and Blossom had often cooked alongside each other in actual backyard barbecues, though as Andrew says, “Obviously, in Oregon you can’t dig a hole in the ground and smoke your pig.” Blossom and Andrew worked out a menu between them and moved onto selecting the name. As fate would have it, serendipity played its part. “This bee kept landing on our notepad over, and over, and over again while we were working out a name,” relates Andrew. Later, someone suggested the business was named after Blossom (her actual name is Honey Blossom). Honey B –Hunny Beez? It never crossed their minds—that tenacious bee on the notepad gets all the credit!

The Newberg food truck, situated inside the Bite of Newberg’s Premier Food Court Pod, was enjoying great success, yet the Hunny Beez partners also had their sights set on an Aloha location. When a spot behind the Aloha Mall opened up, they jumped at it. Signing the lease just prior to the pandemic, they opened their second Hunny Beez food truck location in May of 2020.

Both food truck restaurants feature the Hunny Beezconcept barbecue meats, as well as the Hunny Beez Burgerz. Aloha also offers MexiPino (Mexican Filipino barbecue fusion) where you can get pork, chicken, or brisket, for example, in a taco with Filipino-version sauces. Popular at both locations is the Double Yellow Jacket Burger, and the Shanghai Lumpia (a Filipino version of Taquito) is popular at Aloha as well. Staffing for Hunny Beez consists primarily of family members, with Aloha drawing from relatives living nearby. The

Newberg location has also hired two employees from within the Newberg community. One employee (an assistant manager from Andrew’s past corporate life) helps with catering orders in Aloha, because as Andrew sees it, “He’s a production beast who can bust out mass quantities fast.”

Hunny Beez rewards loyal customers with Free Birthday Treats, and Special Promotions throughout

the year. They hold benefit nights for schools who reach out, awarding them 10% of that night’s sales. Hunny Beez also participates in Newberg Meltdown in which restaurants from all over Yamhill County make their special version of a Grilled Cheese sandwich. The annual benefit, taking place each February, donates $2.00 to the Yamhill County Food Bank

By Andrew’s observation, many people today frequent fast food chain restaurants thinking it will be cheaper. “But that’s not really the case,” he says, “prices are pretty comparable.” Not to mention that money spent at their local food truck stays in the community. Looking to the future he says, “We would like to grow and expand Hunny Beez, but our roots will always be local.”

Wedding Singer

One of my alltime favorite Adam Sandler movies, this is absolutely drenched in ’80s pop culture–movies, cars, fashion, and music. The story follows a talented, funny, and likable wedding singer (Sandler) living in his brother’s basement and who’s terribly in love with the wrong girl. His heart gets broken (of course) and he plunges into a deep pit of despair but refuses to quit working–singing for couples in love–to much expected comedy. Eventually he meets his dream girl (a very cute Drew Barrymore) who’s in love with the wrong guy. Hilarity, flirting, and crossed signals abound, it also stars Alexis Arquette, Christine Taylor, Allen Covert, and more, plus a cameo by Billy Idol. It’s bright and cute and wacky. Rated a strong PG-13 for language and mature content, save this for the older kiddos.

Eternal Sunshine Of The MindSpotless

With pure blissful technicolor and heartthumping pop music by Justin Timberlake, the Trolls movie skywrites in bombastic sparkly letters the message of love, joy, happiness, and positivity. A classic Us vs. Them, the meanie ogre Bergens threaten to capture the Trolls once for all–to eat the Trolls one-by-one and finally feel happy. Surely, there’s a better way to find happiness! And through conflict, trial-and-error, and lesson-learning, the Trolls teach the Bergens how to be happy WITHOUT eating others. On a smaller scale, there’s a classic love story: the untrusting hermit, Branch (Justin Timberlake), meets the happy-go-lucky girl-next-door, Princess Poppy (Anna Kendrick). Their relationship very much parallels the Bergens vs. Trolls in their quest to conquer grumpiness and trust. And shocker, they fall in love. There’s singing, dancing, love, good feelings, and colors you’ve never seen before! Rated PG for mild rude humor and the threat of being eaten (I did tell you). Stream these movies where available, or rent from your local movie store, library, or rental kiosk.

This mindblowingly original sci-fi drama romance came barreling out of the early 2000s with an Academy Award for Best Writing and a slew of other awards. One of Jim Carrey’s earlier dramatic roles, his and Kate Winslet’s characters have a bad breakup and opt to have their relationship erased from memory by an experimental doctor, played by Tom Wilkinson. Also starring Kirsten Dunst and Elijah Wood. It’s surreal, quirky, indie, funny, sad, and far too relatable. As chaotic as it is, it’s utterly human with a heartwarming ending. Rated R for language, drug and mature content
