ho doesn’t enjoy a visit to the farmer’s market?

Strolling between the booths on a beautiful Oregon summer morning, talking to local farmers and picking out fresh produce and other goodies to take home for dinner - it’s the makings of a perfect day! The downside is that everyone loves going, and our local farmer’s markets are often overrun. You can’t find parking, have to watch where you walk to avoid being trampled, and the best products are quickly sold out. Plus the markets are open for just a few hours once a week, and last only while the weather is decent.

But what if I told you there was a place where you could get the same locally-grown fresh produce, along with friendly service, reasonable prices, and it was open year-round? Well, it’s your lucky day! Welcome to 185th Produce, conveniently located at the corner of 185th and TV Highway in Aloha.

185th Produce is everything you love about the Farmer’s Market, minus the hassle and time constraints. It’s a permanent business open 7 days a week, all year! gentleman who sincerely loves his role in supporting the community. He came to this business during the recession in 2008 when, like so many of us, he ended up unemployed and looking to reinvent himself. He opened his first produce stand in 2009 and found his new path!

The 185th location has been open for nearly 5 years, and what a terrific location it is! Huge bins overflowing with colorful fruits and vegetables are immediately visible as you drive in, and what you see out front is just the tip of the iceberg. Inside is a veritable cornucopia of fresh produce, dairy, drinks, honey, and CBD products of all sorts!

Their biggest sellers are their fantastic apple and pear varieties, all locally sourced from Yakima Valley, Hood River and Heritage Farms. They typically have 14-15 different kinds of apples to choose from. One variety that’s very difficult to find anywhere else (and should definitely be sampled) is the Cosmic Crisp. It’s a new hybrid developed at the University of Washington just 2 years ago, and can be compared to a Honey Crisp, except it’s far more durable. New, local, and delicious!

They have a full range of other fruits and vegetables, providing most anything and everything you could possibly want or need.

It’s the best place to go for hard-to-find unique seasonal produce that may not be carried at general supermarkets. They also offer 23 taps of locally-sourced beverages, including beer, mead, cider, kombucha, and CBD soda. Bring in your growlers MondayThursday between 2pm & 7pm for Kombucha Happy Hour: 64 oz fills for only $12!

ative Oregonian brothers Tim and Doug Horst opened Classic Lube Express nearly 25 years ago. They had the idea of creating a local automotive shop to handle your routine maintenance needs. Apollo Drain & Rooter — A Story of Family Story & Photos Provided By Apollo Drain & Rooter Service

W

ith nothing more than an old used van, a dream and a desire to do great work, a young and eager Scott Bird and his bride Jody, began a journey.

If someone were to ask Scott if he was raised on a farm, he could emphatically reply, “Yes!” He grew up in Mattawa, Washington where he worked with his dad, three brothers and three sisters.

When he was 21, he went to his cousin’s wedding reception. There, catching his eye from the reception line was his future wife, Jody. Their world grew closer since it was Jody’s sister marrying one of Scott’s cousins.

Scott attended Utah Technical College for two years and graduated with a degree in Heating & Air Conditioning. The trade which he would then work in back home in Mattawa. Being back home gave Scott the opportunity to reconnect with Jody and they married in June of 1983.

After about a year of working in the Heating and Air Industry, Scott and Jody decided to return to his family farm. Scott worked with his dad on the farm

during the day and drove a semi-truck at night hauling hay cubes to Seattle. Jody went to work for an insurance company in Othello, Washington.

Jody’s sister and a couple of Scott’s cousins had started a drain cleaning company in Tri-Cities, Spokane and Salem, Oregon. It was going so well that they talked Scott and Jody into leaving the farm and to start their own drain cleaning business in Portland, Oregon.

The Apollo journey: Scott was told by the bank that they didn’t think he was a “good investment.” They were so wrong.

After procuring a bank loan, they were able to start a business of their own. Apollo Drain & Rooter was on it’s way! Their tagline, “Big enough to do the job, but small enough to care” would carry them through many years of hard and difficult work. Using their own apartment as their headquarters and Jody navigating with the large and cumbersome Thomas Guide Map Book, they offered a flat rate of only $26.50, no matter how long it took or how challenging the job was.

Over the years of juggling work, marriage and parenthood the Birds eventually grew to become a family of 5 with 3 energetic boys! In 1985 Scott and Jody were blessed with their first baby boy, Brandon. Brandon was continuously by Jody’s side as she answered phones, scheduled jobs and handled the paperwork.

In 1988 he was followed by little brother Ryan, and in 1990 their son Derek completed their family and the nest was full.

With discipline, hard work and a good sense of humor, the young family survived many ups and downs. Tough economic times challenged their survival in the industry, but they kept going. No matter what challenges they faced, they did so with strength and integrity, always willing to help out their fellow members of the community.
