Transforming the landscape of North Salem while serving the best meat and potatoes this side of Texas! Owner/operator of Route 99, Annette Day, with over 40 years in the industry, is no stranger to the restaurant business. Some of you may even recognize her as the previous owner of the extremely popular West Salem landmark, Annette’s. You may have missed her, in fact, since she has been “retired” since 2017. However, as any hardworking successful business person will attest, retirement isn’t necessarily in their blood. When the building located in Northeast Salem was vacated, Annette couldn’t help but research the property. She felt the area was in dire need of a good old-fashioned family restaurant, and she was confident she could provide that. Fortunately, the property’s landlord was in complete agreement, and in August of 2020 Route 99 opened its doors. Serving three meals a day, fantastic breakfast favorites include: Brisket Hash—a USDA prime brisket, with onions, red and green bell peppers, garlic, and country potatoes, topped with smoked cheddar cheese, eggs any style and toast or biscuit; and Chicken and Biscuits—crispy chicken over homemade biscuits smothered with gravy, topped with 2 strips of bacon, 2 eggs and cheddar cheese plus potatoes.
Popular lunch items are: the Smoked Brisket Dip—USDA prime smoked brisket topped with smoked cheddar and fried onion straws on a grilled hoagie; the “99” Grill—USDA prime smoked brisket, country ham, thick-sliced bacon, tomatoes, chilies, and smoked cheddar on a grilled garlic pub roll; the Crispy Chicken & Spicy Slaw—hand-breaded crispy chicken sandwich on a brioche bun with homemade spicy slaw; and their Smoked Cheddar Burger—½ lb burger stuffed with smoked cheddar, topped with more smoked cheddar, and thick-sliced bacon on a grilled brioche bun. For dinner, people can’t get enough of her bacon-wrapped Meatloaf, her ShortRibs, or her Prime Rib. All of the ingredients are of the highest quality; mostly supplied by local distributors, and prepared fresh from scratch. Meats are smoked on site! They have a whole slew of delicious desserts, menu items which can be prepared especially for those with food sensitivities, beer, wine, and a full bar. There is literally something for everyone here! This area has been missing a place like this for a long time. If you’ve been craving amazing, homemade, stick-to-your-ribs food served in a cheery, family-friendly atmosphere, look no further than Route 99!
